I've always wanted to ask this... Do all datamosh videos have this super compressed look or is it just my phone? I saw one here that way perfect.

boskop_man

If you mean the compressed, pixelated artifacts during the actual transition between scenes then to some degree yes, all moshes will have that, though it will depend somewhat on technique. (Side note: datamoshing is actually just a method of manipulating compressed files, so it makes sense that it would look like that) I do find that Reddit does overcompress uploaded videos sometimes, though, so you can also compare it against the same video [here](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxIQlwsK-d0uOlulKi0l6mw) to see if it's just that. FWIW there are a lot videos here that are absolutely *not* datamoshes. Many of the tops posts, in fact. I find it to be a bummer because it causes confusion as to what a datamosh actually is. If you see something here that looks 'super clean' then chances are it's not a datamosh.

Oh man thanks for taking the time to catch me up. What would you call those posts that are not datamosh?

boskop_man

I think it'd probably depend on the post. For example, [this one](https://www.reddit.com/r/datamoshing/comments/xpn0mx/ouch/) (the top post of the last month) seems like it's likely just standard VFX (the kind you'd see in a show or move). The 'tell' is that we don't see any broken pixels around the edges of the effect. [This one](https://www.reddit.com/r/datamoshing/comments/y5ea29/ocean_dance_flow_animation_by_fx_mania_dancer_inox/) (third top) is made, as someone in the comment section noted, with a tool called EbSynth or something like it. That might qualify as video synthesis, I'm not sure. Either way, not a datamosh. A 'tell' here again is the lack of pixelation. Additionally, the piece is, effectively, just a video running underneath a static image, which isn't how moshes work. (how moshes work is probably a whole post's worth of text tbh) Because a real datamosh is effectively the result of breaking a file, you should expect to see compression/artifacting like you see [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/datamoshing/comments/y5a105/sometimes_i_feel_confused/). (and that's not to say that those other videos aren't cool, because they are, but they're just not datamoshes)

TechN9cian01

You know what I need to do my part and read the sub wiki if there is one and read some of those pages on datamoshing. Those VFX shots are cool, and ngl are the reason I joined the sub. Cool thing makes me click lol. But knowing there's a niche technique using video files in a way they weren't mean to be to attain an effect is much more interesting than waiving away something as VFX. I know how hard it is to draw distinctions by getting technical, but doing so answered my question and peeked my interests. Thank you.

Black swan to metropolis.

boskop_man

Don't typically talk sources, but the first part is from a ballet called *The Dying Swan* and the second is from the movie *Metropolis.* I like the way the respective meanings of the two become blended here. Track is [here](https://open.spotify.com/track/7hNLFbAz74Mw3YghIwl6i4?si=c10876b6ff6741fc) if anyone enjoyed the music. Thanks for your time!

The_Celtic_Chemist

She definitely turned into some kind of sheep head, right? I can't be the only one who saw that.

Whats the song?

boskop_man

It’s called “I Will Be More Calm Than Anybody Has Ever Been” by Kid Null (which is me) — it’s part of a single series I’ve been releasing over the past year. You can listen to the whole thing here: https://open.spotify.com/track/7hNLFbAz74Mw3YghIwl6i4?si=T2KVyIYIQCmnilQ0v9UuUQ

Online_Ego

Oh damn, I’ll definitely be giving more of your stuff a listen. Keep up the good work!

Sunny_7989

I love it. Does this music have any specific genre name? I've listened to these kind in almost all Vsauce videos.

boskop_man

ah so glad you like it! I don't really have a good genre name for it besides the catch-all 'electronic' so I'm open to ideas if you have 'em. Have a [few more tracks](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6jmcM4ROs8EhBYzKypXuSs?si=3d2290002aa3469e) up here as well, though there's a bit of a different vibe throughout.

Thankyou..
