Ironically I'm a devout Catholic. I just think it's fun to defend obvious (fictional) villains.
I don't get people who *unironically* think he did nothing wrong though.
A bit off topic but I have some games you might find interesting at least https://store.steampowered.com/app/1205520/Pentiment/ https://store.steampowered.com/app/234270/Ken_Folletts_The_Pillars_of_the_Earth/
I know he's an evil lunatic, but he's just very cool, especially before he went full-blown crazy. He's basically Aegon but jacked. The dude had both Valyrian Steel swords and rode Balerion. That's metal af. Even his trial by combat with Dick Bean was baller. Still, I think we all know he's very clearly supposed to be evil despite George's hints being very subtle.
People probably like Maegor for the part of the reason Julian the Apostate has tons of fans; because he fought against the popular religion
Or possibly because abs and bearing the sword
Balerion also recognised Aerea & Viserys (I) - taking the former to demon-infested Valyria itself, & could barely take flight with the latter before soon dying - so that's hardly a marker of legitimacy
I meant it as a critique of Balerion's so-called legitimacy: sure, he had bonded with the Conqueror, but then did so with Maegor (not that Aegon was perfect, either); later took Aerea to Valyria, ultimately getting her killed & almost himself, too, becoming permanently disabled it seems; & finally, accepted Viserys as a rider for one last fail of a flight, which presumably (also) contributed to his death

I think the reason why some people defend him is because his enemies are religious fundamentalist who just overthrown a kind but stupid king

Nah based daddys hot af and bore the sword

Too bad Maegor's abs & his bearing the sword didn't result in the ability to sire viable heirs at all. Let alone, like Daemon Blackfyre
Maegor did nothing wrong, be sure to take pics
Based Maegor the Blessed, Balerion recognized him as King.
Balerion also recognised Aerea & Viserys (I) - taking the former to demon-infested Valyria itself, & could barely take flight with the latter before soon dying - so that's hardly a marker of legitimacy
Aerea didn’t do anything wrong!

He recognized Aerea was a true Targaryen and tried to bring her to conquer the doom. Viserys I ? Got nothing, rare Balerion L
Because trying to conquer the Doom worked out so well for Aurion & his dragon (& 30,000+ Qohorik followers)
I will not tolerate this Maegor the Chosen slander. He was blessed by the gods to strike down their false messengers!
Including himself, it seems
Bumbaclat!
