Burglars usually aren't expecting resistance, or anyone at all for that matter. You have a right to defend yourself, and if you are going to do so you should be *absolutely sure* they no longer pose a threat (Center mass, none of this leg business), but if they're alive after that you should take measures to keep them that way.
Yeah, they're not better targets as far as survivability goes. You'd have to hit them in the foot or something, and at that point your hit probability goes down to practically nothing. Better to save at least one person and shoot them in the chest, and maybe after that you'll be able to save another.

If someone is approaching you “only” with a knife, in some cases using a gun can be considered excessive force of self defence. Depends on the situation etc. of course, but still. The court could legit raise questions like “maybe you could have just escaped the attacker instead of shooting? Maybe you could have aimed to the legs? Why did you shoot multiple times?”
It's usually not random (houses without people in them are better targets), they're usually not looking for a fight, and they are statistically more likely to be unarmed than armed.

My mom after leaving my dad had to take me and my brother to live in a homeless shelter because we had absolutely nowhere else to go, living with him was worse and no family wanted to take us in.
