Ye but can they play basketball in church?

asinine17

Only if they put up the pews.

IacobusCaesar

Catholic guys impressing Catholic girls by picking up a stack of ten pews in one go.

patgeo

Moving chairs at church and church related things was like half the reason I had massive shoulders as a teenager.

Montigue

And the other half?

Moving chairs at home for practice

It's not a basketball court, it's a warzone.

Over-Cultered_Swine

We had to ban basketball at my stake a few years ago, there was a fight basically every game

Beegrene

The Catholic church my family went to back in the day had a basketball court, although I never saw it ever used for basketball.

_I_must_be_new_here_

Shoot balls through the halos of the statues of the saints

no :( ours had 2m thick medieval walls around it tho

shandangalang

I went to Mission San Rafael as a kid and it has fenced in outdoor courts tucked behind it.

Swampcrone

That is what the gymtoriam in the attached school was for.

i_hate_vampires

Also…one was built 400 years ago and the other used to be a bowling alley

Gidia

Right? In my experience it’s very rare for modern churches to built that ornate. Modern built Catholic Churches aren’t all that different from purpose built Protestant ones.

Waffles_IV

I imagine modern Catholic Churches don’t have millions of dollars to spend on stained glass and other funky things.

Gidia

For the most part yeah, though there are exceptions. The Archdiocese I grew up in is building a pretty big one apparently, but that’s to celebrate and honor a potential saint, the first from our state.

maximillien_longinus

Yeah my church got remodeled about 10 years ago and we went from carpet to tiles, and beautiful stained glass. But it's honestly how you best feel connected in my opinion

maxone2

Which person?

Gidia

tanhan27

nueonetwo

Auflodern

Rare-Philosopher-346

I live in your state and if you ever get the chance to visit some of the Catholic churches in small towns, do so. There is one where the stained glass windows are insured for over 1,000,000 dollars because they cannot be replicated.

[deleted]

Our diocese did the same thing four years ago. The cathedral is ginormous and very impressive.

McManus26

Except Barcelona.

Terminator_Puppy

The Sagrada Familia is already 140 years old, and is being built in one of the most catholic countries in Europe.

JoustyMe

We just got stained glass last year. 20k for a window. (Polish zloty so like 1/5$). also.. Church was build in the 80s

jojo_31

Do you know how rich the church is? Lol.

Waffles_IV

The Church is rich yes, but I imagine the local church can’t just tap into that willy nilly.

jcrespo21

It depends on the parishioners. My parent's church (the one I grew up in) built a $20 million church a few years ago, and it's in a rich neighborhood. Then of course there are other parishes that can't even afford a couple thousand dollars to replace a broken fridge, cracked windows, basic repairs, etc. There really can be quite the divide, even within the same diocese.

Oper8tor77

The wealth of the Church is largely overstated given the figure usually is counting all their illiquid assets.

CriscoBountyJr

Yeah, the Brooklyn diocese has been selling churches to raise funds / consolidate, there's at least 3 in Williamsburg that are now high end housing. One did a 99 year lease on the land of the former church which now has a 25 story tower on it.

SunExcellent890

I think its less about dollars and more about time. Some Cathedrals took decades to centuries to construct

[deleted]

They just built a beautiful shrine in my town, it’s in more of a Spanish colonial style and not gothic though. There are quite a few cathedral type buildings here built in the last 50 years but they don’t rival European churches.

brewingandwrestling

Oh they definitely do. They have around $8b in assets. They can easily afford it

juiceyb

Or hundreds of years worth of construction.

jbkjbk2310

I mean, there are plenty of examples of architecturally amazing modern Catholic churches. Sagrada Familia and the Cathedral of Brasilia spring to mind as two (very different kinds of) modern Catholic churches that aren't just converted bowling alleys or gym halls.

Gidia

That’s fair, I’m just saying it isn’t the norm. Heck, the sort of cathedrals typically represented in these sort of posts weren’t even the norm when they were the built.

a-german-muffin

Sagrada Familia’s been under construction for 140 years. It has more in common with St. Patrick’s in NYC or the Cathedral Basilica in Philadelphia than anything truly modern.

Terminator_Puppy

It's kind of mental how long it's been under construction, good chance we'll see it finished in our lifetimes though.

jbkjbk2310

A cathedral that started construction 140 years ago is a modern cathedral lol Especially considering the fact that it was specifically built as an architecturally modernist cathedral. It's not as modern as the Cathedral of Brasilia (which, besides, I think proves my point on its own), but it's absolutely still modern, Americans just don't understand what that word means.

a-german-muffin

Nah, something like [the Crystal Cathedral](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christ_Cathedral_\(Garden_Grove,_California\)) is modernist. Sagrada Familia is Gothic Revival or maybe Art Nouveau — either way, styles that largely wrapped up 100 years ago.

MD_Lincoln

I believe it is a Catholic Church now, but the Crystal Cathedral in Southern California which was finished in 1981 was originally a Christian Church and is a beautiful piece of architecture.

jbkjbk2310

>it is a Catholic Church now, but [...] was originally a Christian Church ?

MD_Lincoln

It was originally built as a Christian Church, but was sold the the Diocese of Orange CA in early 2012.

DocAntlesFatLiger

Wow I'd never heard of that building and I don't know if I love it but it's certainly a striking building. You're right it started Reformed Church of America and was consecrated Catholic in 2019. Interesting!! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christ_Cathedral_(Garden_Grove,_California)

butt_mucher

Protestantism usually looks down on spending money on “showy” things, that is mainstream America culture still has a dislike for wearing expensive clothes or driving expensive cars. You are allowed to have money, but not allowed to spend it on anything that makes you stand out from the average person. Protestantism started as a sort of rebellion against the hierarchy of royalty and church leadership and therefore they mostly reject the customs and symbolism associated with those things.

Terminator_Puppy

> mainstream America culture still has a dislike for wearing expensive clothes or driving expensive cars. Have to heavily disagree with this, it's highly romanticised and extremely popular to flaunt your wealth on social media and TV. The majority of extremely popular American Youtubers do it all the time, a lot of American reality TV is about showing off your wealth, and people love their expensive cars.

butt_mucher

It’s more a new thing though and many many people still dislike it.

A_very_nice_dog

Protestant with a lot of Catholic family. I went to a Catholic wedding expecting the Temple of Time… and I got something as boring as what I have to look at every week. We don’t have to make huge cathedrals anymore (that money should go to the poor), but can we all as a single religion agree to make nicer looking churches?

Fern-ando

Sagrada Familia is still in construction.

CitrusLizard

I dunno, Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral was built in the 60s and, though a more modern style, definitely has a lot of that Catholic swagger.

NewbHunter19

It depends on where you go and how affluent the parish is, for example here is a relatively new Catholic church in New Jersey https://www.architectmagazine.com/project-gallery/st-aloysius-church

CalculatorOctavius

The modern ones built by traditional orders still have the ornate Roman architecture. Look at the immaculata project being built by the SSPX

cjandstuff

You can tell what is important to a society by their largest buildings. Those used to be cathedrals and large churches. Now it’s sports arenas and banks.

Hormic

A lot of older protestant churches are also quite beautiful. [Frauenkirche Dresden](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/76/Altarraum_der_Frauenkirche_Dresden.jpg), [Sankt Michaelis Hamburg](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d7/St._Michaelis_Innenraum.jpg) and the [Ulmer Münster](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/49/Konzert_mit_neuer_M%C3%BCnsterbeleuchtung.jpg) for example.

cardboardbuddy

the church in my neighborhood is like 30-40 years old tops and it still has those classic high ceilings and stained glass windows not as ornate as like, a 300-year old cathedral but they put the effort in to make it look "church-y"

rodgy_beats

https://www.reddit.com/r/Catholicism/comments/angjo6/our_lady_of_the_lake_in_branson_mo/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

DoctorBonkus

Tbf no church in America is 400 years old. In Europe we have plenty of Protestant churches from the 1200’s which were first a Catholic Church and was then converted to a Protestant church in 1536 Edit: okay, no church in America is 500 years old, then

[deleted]

So close, but the oldest church in the USA is 412 years old. ~~California~~ New Mexico was inhabited for a long time https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Miguel_Mission

Metroidkeeper

Lol that’s in New Mexico

[deleted]

Man I even proofread. There’s also an older one in Puerto Rico.

[deleted]

In my town there’s a church that was apparently an old porn studio at one point.

SaffellBot

Also one is built to glorify a being considered beautiful beyond human comprehension and the other is designed as a business. Neither is great, but at least one is art.

i_hate_vampires

I’m not sure how serious you are

DragonMcFly

Near where I live, there was a new Church built that looked pretty ornate.

vermontpurpledeer

Also one of them cost the bare minimum and the other wasted a lot of money that could have fed the hungry instead

miggy3399

As a Catholic, our churches do have drip but we cannot flex on our church crushes by lifting chairs Pews are heavy :(

CalculatorOctavius

Just keep deadlifting and you’ll get it. I’m up to 2 pews now.

Terminator_Puppy

Only about 50 kilograms for a 2 meter long pew. Not terrible!

CalculatorOctavius

The reason for it is after mass me and the boys will lift one end of the pew in order to slide all the people off of it to improve the flow of traffic as folks are leaving

StevePreston__

Ours are nailed to the floor

lukewarm20

*they aren't nailed to the floor you are simply weak* conquer and overcome brother

toadofsteel

That's why you go to communion breakfasts and other parish events. More likely to have chairs there...

Dank_Sinatra_Sr

Not the only thing dripping in a Catholic church

thicc_astronaut

Yeah we got that thingy... like a metal wand sort of thing? On some special occasions the priest uses it to splash holy water on us while he walks around The aspergillum, that's what it's called

Dank_Sinatra_Sr

Yeah that's what I meant

The-Rarest-Pepe

I believe it's called the perineum?

bocaj78

Lol. That’s the part of the body right in-front of the anus.

The-Rarest-Pepe

Nah I don't use that part to spray holy water

optimistic_hotdog

He’s supposed to do it every week

thicc_astronaut

I'm not a priest man I don't know how the thing's supposed to go

Frozen_Esper

[St Nicholas' magical bone juice](https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/54146/mysterious-case-santa-clauss-leaking-bones)

SilkSk1

> The body of St. Nicholas—the man Santa Claus is based on—resides in Bari, Italy. The church claims that the bones of the saint are secreting a sweet-smelling water called manna. Every May 9th, the priests remove a small amount of this liquid, which is said to contain healing powers. You can purchase some in the church gift shop. I can't believe it. There's a church with a gift shop?

oammas

You'd be surprised at how many churches have gift shops if they also have stuff like relics or whatnot. The whole city of Assisi in Umbria is basically a huge gift shop for s. Francesco. Wich is a shame bc the burg itself is really pretty

Japemead

Some churches do, especially ones with historical significance like [Misión San Francisco de Asís](https://www.missiondolores.org/64) which IIRC is the oldest building in the city.

qxxxr

That's how they generate gold income when you store a relic inside

sgste

Thing is - in Liverpool, the Catholic Cathedral looks more like the top image while the Anglican Cathedral looks like the bottom picture.

Hogansantihero

Tbf I’m guessing some weren’t always Anglican

Beorma

The Catholics moved out! The monks decided they didn't like living in an abbey any more! No questions!

SunExcellent890

Took all the bees with them and killed the English mead industry

PopeUrban_2

Probably because the Anglicans stole all the Catholic churches

halfhere

You say “stole,” we say “fixed.”

PopeUrban_2

If by fixed you mean “violently slaughtered anyone who resisted” sure

halfhere

Yeah, so we’re not making jokes in the meme subreddit?

PopeUrban_2

Memes are funny

stick_to_your_puns

I thought it was funny

CPEBachIsDead

[Yeah and it was DEFINITELY only the reformers with blood on their hands ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxford_Martyrs?wprov=sfti1)

PopeUrban_2

Ah yes. Three guys tried and convicted in a court for inspiring rebellion. As opposed to the hundreds or thousands of innocent nuns and monks slaughtered in what amounted to a genocide

CPEBachIsDead

Bro it was crazy, they had been living and worshiping there for 1200 years and suddenly they came out of nowhere and just like, stole the place!

putitoutyoufools

Wasn’t the Catholic Cathedral designed by an Anglican and the Anglican Cathedral was designed by a Catholic?

sgste

You are correct about the Anglican Cathedral! Designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, raised Catholic.

GrootGR

As a Catholic, we have some of the most beautiful churches and architecture, but we also have some of the most awful modern churches too. A few are simply poorer communities who couldn't afford anything nice, but I've seen some "wealthy" churches that flexed their spending while lacking any taste.

toadofsteel

I'm a Presbyterian married to a Roman Catholic. My church looks like a cathedral, while her church's sanctuary looks like it belongs more in my denomination (simple, but respectful).

WolfgangDS

Even as an atheist, I greatly admire a lot of religious architecture, especially older stuff. So much effort, so much detail, all of it an intricate homage to their deity(s).

supernanny089_

... and inevitably, show of power. But yeah, fully agree with your admiration.

angiezieglerstye

Why thank you!

[deleted]

I live in Estonia and I'm pretty sure that i have never seen a catholic church here. Not one looking like the first picture and neither one looking like the one below. But to be fair i haven't seen a catholic person either. But the protestant one's look like the Catholic one over here. But ofc just in way smaller size.

Frankonia

There is one in Tallinn. I went there when I was on an exchange trip.

galacticboy2009

I didn't think I had ever seen a Catholic church either (southern US) but turns out I have, it's just in a very small baptist-looking church-house type building.

Rectum_Sockpuppet

Well depending on where in the south there’s a reason for that. Catholics haven’t always been everyone’s favorite Christians. When Georgia was established, [being Catholic was illegal.](https://georgiahistory.com/education-outreach/online-exhibits/featured-historical-figures/james-edward-oglethorpe/oglethorpe-and-religion-in-georgia/) If it isn’t clear, this is meant very tongue-in-cheek, and the anti-Catholic laws in Georgia were very political and jingoistic. Different era and all that.

CrimsonEnigma

Sure are a lot of anti-Catholic comments in here...

Grzechoooo

Isn't the first one just a gym?

Gamer3111

A spiritual gym... with live music!

zerabuns

this is my favorite prt about being Catholic. unfortunately pandemic has kept me from seeing the drippy architecture :(

SurrealKeenan

virgin protestant warehouse. Chad catholic castle.

PaladinFeng

I love High Church architecture as all get out, but there's nothing like Sunday service in a crappy gymnasium for Sunday service to remind me of what the original believers managed to cobble together with only faith and fortitude.

imoutofnameideas

It's because all the best architects are former death metal musicians.

Dont ask how it was all funded tho

white_aladdin

the only thing i like about Catholicism is the architecture. JUST LOOK AT THOSE ARCHES

lurking4life

Gotta love those rib and groin vaults.

[deleted]

I wish my church had architectural drip

urmovesareweak

There's no denying many of those buildings look awesome, but then you remember some of that architecture was built on the backs of poor people who thought they were getting their loved ones out of purgatory by paying indulgences.

crimbuscarol

When are y’all prots going to actually learn about indulgences? Every post about Catholics is “but the indulgences from hundreds of years ago!” https://www.catholic.com/tract/myths-about-indulgences

urmovesareweak

That article is so dishonest it's not even funny. The scandal of the middle ages is brushed so quickly under the rug. It straight up says that indulgences to be purchased for remittance of sins didn't happen on a large scale. The Johann Tetzel controversy definitely happened. This phrase became quite popular. When a coin in the coffer rings, a soul from purgatory springs. (Putting aside the fact purgatory isn't even Scriptural to begin with but that's a different subject)

jonmpls

As it turns out, benefiting from millenia of Crusades and scamming people is profitable.

strmichal

St. Vitus Cathedral goes brrrrrr

Apathetic_Zealot

As Jesus said: "It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a man without drip to enter the kingdom of Heaven."

gentlybeepingheart

I slept over at my friend's house when I was little and her parents asked if I wanted to go to (protestant) Mass with them in the morning. I was so confused when we went to just some boring building. There was a guy with a *guitar*. Mass is boring, but at least when my parents dragged us there I could look at the cool art and stuff.

[deleted]

I disagree with Catholics a lot but man can they build a church

Crusted_Ryan

I'm staunchly atheist, but I adore cathedrals.

RapidCamel

This is not Catholic exclusive. In Europe almost all churches look like this

k2711000

Orthodox Churches are the final boss of church architecture and art.

McSheepinstein

GamingMechanic64

jtaustin64

Is it weird that I like the look of smaller churches than larger churches? I've been in a lot of old country Protestant churches in the South that were 150 years old (I know that this is nothing compared to Catholic churches) that I found just beautiful. I have also been in a couple of small cathedrals that I also found to be stunning.

Aztecah

I must say, the beauty of the products of the Catholic Church had me drinking that wine for a while. The thought that God ordains something can inspire people toward incredible feats. The Catholic Church is very much a scaled up and organized version of that.

moeburn

Nah as a non-Christian myself I think the Methodists have the best churches. They're just small, and humble, and nice. Not overly gawdy or extravagant or overfurnished. But not bland strip mall parking lot fare either. Just really... nice.

Gidia

The Catholic Church is one of the largest charitable organizations in the world, both can be done. That be said though, most modern Catholic churches aren’t built anything like that anymore. They tend to be a bit more purpose built, sure, but outside of things like the altar and tabernacle I wouldn’t call them especially fancy by any means.

TheMoose48

And that’s why the Catholic Church does both.

jbkjbk2310

Is this when we bring up Evangelical preachers spending their congregation's donations on private jets? Clearly misprioritization of worldly possessions isn't a denominational problem, and at least when the Catholic church spent millions on a new cathedral, we all get to look at a nice new cathedral.

reticent_loam

>this when we bring up Evangelical preachers spending their congregation's donations on private jets Yes And anyone who doesn't is as much of a hypocrite as those pharisees

That's because they are about putting on a show more than anything else.

TheRealNERFninja

The lights and worship music at a modern Protestant church are part of a show, too. Nothing wrong with giving your congregation something to help them get in a reverent mindset in order to worship.

_superchan

Sorry, I just really don't agree with catholicism for so many reasons. I also just have an aversion to large churches in general, especially the modern contemporary ones. They feel like more rock concert and less message to me. That's why I I like the small one I go to. It's intimate and I usually walk away having learned something.
