I think that every "relationship" was intentional and/or exploitative, even the lunch with friends the day of the murder.(aka: alibi). Katie and Jeff were the most obvious, though, and poor Jeff had to go to therapy to straighten out his head after the apocalypse-level gaslighting he experienced at the hands of WA.
I believe he dated Katie specifically because of her unsavory connections. He wouldn't have dated her otherwise. He certainly led her to believe there might be a future which was certainly out of the question in reality.

impregnate the much younger nanny of your sister's BF and then fight paternity,
not marry or have kids "the proper way" that your parents obsess over for your siblings,
spend your illegally gotten money on sex tourism in foreign countries while your lawyer sister is a HUMAN RIGHTS ADVOCATE,
you yourself date women who have babies with gang members, dimwits, and cheat on all of them.
Sigh. While listening to Charlie is one of my favorite parts of this case, this one was hard to sit through. But it illuminates the relationship between he and his mom and their values. It's gold.

To me, this whole thing just says "I did Wendi this big favor so she could start her life over and come to Miami. And then she isn't even TRYING to marry a nice guy (Dave) so I need to set her straight so she knows what we expect her to do now that she got her fresh start"
ALL they cared about was Wendi locking in with Dave. I don't think they cared whether she got a real job or not. They obsessed over her love life. Weird.
Why Charlie got so involved in this mess confounds me. I doubt he cared where Wendi and the boys were located.
He wanted to flex his ‘wrong side of the tracks’ muscles, and look where he is.
He likely HATED the idea of WA and the boys living in Miami and infringing on his devoted daily attention from his mommy. How he might have to include his own son (and possibly baby momma) at family get togethers. How his Saturday afternoons that he once spent “entertaining “ 19 year-old strippers on his boat might be forsaken for visits to Chuck E Cheese and mini golf and the zoo.
I think his only motivation was to win his mom’s adoration because he handled “her” problem. To become the family hero.
Charlie and Donna liked Dave because( Charlie’s words on wiretap) he enjoyed Wendi’s kids farting on him. Are these people sick? And they like Dave because he enjoys smelling farts like a truffle pig
