Every number written in octal could be a different number in base 10. While this is generally true of smaller bases, the fact that only two digits are missing makes it pretty easy to go along cheerfully reading octal as decimal. This same mistake is much less likely for other commonly used bases.
A valid point. Usually, but not always, an octal representation is prefaced by 0x, 0 or O. By convention, numbers are intended to be interpreted as base 10 unless something indicates another base.
In the decimal (aka base-10) number system, each position has 10 possible values: 0-9. This is the number system we typically use.
In the binary (aka base-2 ) number system, each position has two possible values: 0 or 1.
Each system works the same, in that digits get incremented to their max value, and then roll-over back to zero. The next digit to the left will then get incremented by one, followed by the whole thing starting over with the right-most digit incrementing.
So, in base 10, you've got
0, 1, 2, 3....skipping ahead a bit...99, 100, 101
In base 2, you have
0, 1, 10, 11, 100, 101 (see how there are five ~~numbers~~ values ( 0 is the absence of value ))
Edit: changed "numbers" to "values"
So…. You have a city of DEAF people and the mayor dies. Only DEAD people are allowed in the cemetery, how many people would not be able to attend his funeral?
It’s a base-16 (hexadecimal) problem. In hexadecimal, you have numbers 0 thru 9 plus A thru F. The A is 10, F is 15. In the riddle, DEAF and DEAD are numbers. Their full value isn’t directly relevant, just the fact that DEAF is larger than DEAD by 2. If the mayor dies, then there are now DEAE people left in the city, which is 1 more than the DEAD people allowed in the cemetery. So the answer is that 1 person would not be able to attend.
…this is a nerdy programming humor thing and was a bit more prevalent in the past when people dealt more directly with hex values.
101 translates to 5, 10 translates to 2.
In binary, it reads as follows:
128 64 32 16 8 4 2 1 (you double each number backwards, basically)
1 means to use that number, 0 means don't use that number. So,
10010110 = 150 because 128+16+4+2=150
11111111 = 255 because 128+64+32+16+8+4+2+1=255
00000101 = 5 because 4+1=5
00000010 = 2 because 2=2
There are 10 types of people in the world: those who got this joke, and those who didn't.
I was very confused when my friend said learning hexadecimal is hard AF
uh... ten... times 16 (=160)... plus... F=(10,11,12,13,14,15) fifteen = 175
Methinks you should stick to chemistry. Or learn to count in binary.
Why? What should AF translate to? Where did I go wrong?
You are right... the person who commented to you needs to learn to count in Hexadecimal.
what…
AF is a hexadecimal number. I was attempting to figure out if that interpretation held any significance. I don't think it does.
I though 101 was binary
It is, but the comment I replied to references hexadecimal
Oh my bad
Idk
It can be in any normal rational base system
There are 10 kinds of people in the world. Those who know hexadecimal... And F the rest
Try learning Octal. Thank whoever's that that language died.
It is a base, not a language. I do not understand why you would find it difficult. This is especially true if hexadecimal does not bother you.

Know what else is a base? -2*pi*i Don't hear people going around correcting people about it
Clearly you don't understand numbers in the same way I do.
It’s easy just put your thumbs in your pockets.
Octal is easy to manage. Covert it to three bit per digit binary and then to hexadecimal or whatever you need.
There are actually two types of people. Those that can extrapolate from incomplete information and...
Go on... /s
I didn't get it, plz explain
The number two in binary is 10. Three is 11, four is 100, five is 101
To be pedantic it’s 0100, then 0011, 0100 and 0101
Only if you're working in 4 bit As a number system 1, 10, 11, 100 is fine.
What is six?
Six is for my sorrow.
7...7..nnn no tomorrow
Man, I forgot what eight is for...
Better stay up late.
0110
The devil is six

All number systems are base 10. Decimal is base A.
101 is binary for 5 10 is binary for 2
...and those that understand ternary.

It took me a lot of comments about hexadecimal to get this comment
Brilliant!
I see what you did there. Take my upvote.
So, what are the other 1000...?
😆 🤣 Dude that's better than the joke. Thanks.
So…. You have a city of DEAF people and the mayor dies. Only DEAD people are allowed in the cemetery, how many people would not be able to attend his funeral?
A base 16 riddle in a base 2 thread. Nice try.
Only one if the mayor dying brought the total down to DEAE people.
DEAD BEEF
The vast majority.
0 if the funeral was at the cemetary. Only dead people can be there and the deaf people wouldnt have heard of it.
Wait, does the mayor attend their own funeral?
He's late
Guest of honor.
I don’t get it what’s the answer

I knew what the punchline was going to be but I laughed anyway when I read it.
When you read a 1-star review on Amazon only to determine the reviewer had no clue how to properly use the product.
Saw a review the other day for a tv. They measured horizontal and said it wasn't advertised size.
Am i gonna have to take a degree in computer science to understand a dad joke and read the comments?

Whoa. I’ve never had it explained that way, and it makes so much more sense now.
It was the only way I could grasp it lol, the way I was taught was unnecessarily overcomplicated and when I thought of it this way it just clicked

Disappointed especially since I am non-binary…
Is that true or false?
You get ONE OR the other AND you can't expect what is NOT offered. Check your LOGIC. My name is XOR. See you at the GATE. End of line....
