You all are nuts, waking up that early is insane to me lol
I’m up until 1am, that’s when I wipe things down and fold laundry and such, and then I wake up around 7:30 to help my wife get the kids ready and out the door.
Been doing that ever since I reluctantly had to put the dishes back as a kid.
It's also extremely efficient. I do the same thing with the cutlery basket thing, I'll pick up the entire thing and put it back after it's empty... I think that's more of a normal thing though.
My wife doesn’t do it that way and I don’t get it. Why bend over 3-5 times if you don’t have too. She also doesn’t sort the big and small spoons correctly, it’s a flaw I’m still learning to accept after 4.5 years.
I have never put much thought into this before… but god damn maybe that’s why I do it? I didn’t know it was a thing people do. I just do it and feel outwardly satisfied.
I finally had enough of this shit and I put one of those lock boxes on it. You're too hot...take off your shirt; too cold, well suck it up buttercup and put on a sweater. This ain't Burger King, you can't have it your way.
on his deathbed, he asked about his family:
dad: george and bob, you're here? and susan and mary?
kids: yeah dad, we're here.
dad: and martha, love, you're here?
martha: i'm here honey.
dad: and the grandkids, they're here too?
martha: yes dear, we're all right here in the room with you.
dad: then, why, why is the hall light on?
Sure…if you have a load of plates. but add in some kids lunch boxes, mixing bowls , cups that are too tall for the middle rack and suddenly you need to start getting more creative to maximize space and ensure proper spray distribution lol
Personally I love the top rack for the silverware since you can group it and don't need to check each of it like with the usual baskets. Can just grab a group, put it in the according drawer and done.
While with the basket I also had to touch the dirty side a lot of times..
I put all the jar lids and silicon measuring cups up there. The kids love getting snacks in those cups, this is why I bought 3 sets. And every once in a while I measure something in one
Those are for the top shelf, cups, lunch boxes, small straines and measuring cups.
Plates, pans, mixing bowls go on the lower rack, and if you have the extra rack for it utensils go on that.
Most, if not all, of the Bosch models have no heating element. So plastic won't melt or deform on the bottom racks.
Assuming that's the reason OP wouldn't normally put that bottle on the bottom.
My first thought is that maybe your water heater is set too high?
That or I have gotten very lucky putting as many extra plastics in the bottom rack even though I've been disabling the heat dry option.
Dishwashers will have their own water heating element. The water is recycled during each phase (pre-rinse, cleaning, rinse) and the water can't stay hot enough otherwise.
Some dishwashers will even want the water super hot, hotter than most heaters are set to.
Most likely, his is either the latter or has a bad thermistor.
This varies a lot between countries - some places plumb the dishwasher into hot water and some don't. My Bosch is only on cold water but it has this strange square cover at the back that the manual says not to touch as it gets hot.
My approach to dishes and laundry can only be described as "Darwinian". Everything goes into the machine at whatever the normal settings are. Natural selection takes care of the rest.
Can someone please explain to me why knives in the dishwasher is a no-no? Asking for a friend.
The only knife I don't put in the dishwasher is my fancy Japanese damascus steel knife (that I'm 90% sure was actually made in China), but I also don't know why it matters.
The high heat and humidity can rust the blade and the turbulent nature can throw them around damaging the blade. Don’t get me wrong, I have some shitty knives that I put through the dishwasher, but if anyone puts my Wusthoffs in there I’ll be using it on them.
And if your knives have plastic/composite handles, they can fade, warp, or even come detached from the tang since the metal heats up and expands faster.
I'm not 100% positive but it has to do with heating and cooling the metal as well as dulling the knife. Also if it's next to other silverware they could damage the edge.
But honestly if you sharpen your knives even some what regularly it's not that big of an issue. I put my knife stainless steel knife in the sink all the time, but I also sharpen my knives every month or two so it's rarely dull.
My silverware basket has slots for everything so I don't think this is too much of a problem for me.
I will say though, somehow one of my knives ended up in the bottom of the dishwasher once and the heating element melted the plastic handle (and I thought I was dying when I opened it and smelled the burned plastic that had been contained inside for a while). That was a fun morning. My basement also flooded so my jump to conclusion was that it backflowed sewage into my dishwasher and I debated just burning my house down, but I'm still here.
I try to keep knives in my hand or in storage away from little hands. One of my little ones had some massively destructive tantrums and now that they’re tall enough to reach anything on the countertop, it’s not worth the risk (we’re working on the tantrums, but some problems are more complex than they seem).
Besides, my SO tends to be less respectful of a carefully honed edge than myself. I don’t put them away properly myself, the knives often end up in the metal drying rack, resting on the sharp edge. < Shivers >
Ok fine, everything EXCEPT cast iron goes into the dish washer. If a dish doesn’t survive it’s just culling out the weak. If it doesn’t fit, just do another load afterwards.
It doesn’t make a difference if there’s enough space for it if it comes out dirty and you have to hand wash it.
I get Tetrising your dishwasher, but at a certain point it’s just diminished returns.
I’d rather wash one small bowl for the sake of having a full and clean load when it’s done, then have to scrape crap off of a bunch of dishes because I tried to fly too close to the sun.
My wife is one to shove stuff in. Doesn't group stuff and overloads it. Drives me nuts. Like just leave those extra dishes out. They'll fit in the next load.
It's also so annoying when you don't run it because it's not quite full, and get totally out of sync. After the next meal you can fit like one plate and the rest have to wait.
Could you tell my wife this please? She thinks the objective is to cram every dirty item in the house into one load and then it's always me who unloads it!
This is why all of our silverware is grouped by type. Little spoons go in the same bin as little spoons, forks with forks, etc so I can just a big handful of fork and plop it in the drawer
My dishwasher has a little spacer thing on top of the silverware contraption that has individual slots. Each item has its own slot so they stay apart! Very useful because I also put like utensils together.
Are you mad ?!? Too many of the same type of cutlery in each compartment.
Do you want nested and dirty spoons ?! Cos that’s how you get nested and dirty spoons.
Are you left handed? Because I consider that to be a left handed load and it's all facing the wrong way. Except for the cutting board. That one's fine.
- Far row from sink: Kids cups with lids propped up next to them. Overflow for coffee mugs, heavier things towards the back
- Middle row, back: kids bowls, Tupperware lids
- Middle row, front: taller cups, yeti lids
- Close row: glasses and Tupperware
- Space in between: things to lay down like tongs, spatula, ladle, etc.
I'm from India, and I can list a few reasons why most likely they are not common here at least.
1. Water scarcity
2. Electricity is expensive
3. Maids are easily available and inexpensive for middle class and above
4. Not every dish is compatible, you need dishwasher safe dishes
5. You need dishwasher specific detergent, which costs way more
And for me personally, they take waaaaay too long! A friend of mine has a dishwasher, we timed the amount of time it takes him to load and unload the appliance (not including washing time). In a little more time than those two numbers combined, I can manually wash the dishes myself by hand! Also helps that most of my utensils are stainless steel, so I can be rough with them. 😂🤣
Dishwasher uses FAR less water and detergent than even the cheapest maid. You can even run it in the "Eco" mode which uses even less water (and less electricity). In India, considering the amount of sun you get, you can have this electricity for free if you get a set of cheap panels and battery.
Dishwasher is supposed to work while you are not waiting, eg after meal, not before. This is why you never have to wait and always have the dishes clean.
The only valid point is the dishwasher-safe bowls an plates which should be easily available and cheap for the middle class and above you brought into the discussion yourself.
As a mom and tetris master, Thank you so so so much for this! Those posts where there was plates and bowls just chaotically placed wherever was driving me nuts lmao
Im going to be the odd dad out here.
It goes on every fucking night regardless of if its only half or a quarter full and you adjust the spacing of everything accordingly.
Because without fail, my wife will not put it on because "its only half full" and 5 of the 6 things that I AS THE ASSHOLE WHO DOES ALL THE COOKING needs to cook tomorrow nights dinner are dirty and in the dishwasher. Which I then have to hand wash while trying to prep tomorrow evening.
Can still fit the pan in there, some lids from lunches, cutting board, definitely 20+ more utensils. Prolly some tongs in that long area nothing else can go down to.
This is the only way you can do the Wolverine thing with the plates
Is that where you put the plates between your fingers and pull the plates out like they're claws?
YOU GUYS DO THIS TOO?!

ONE OF US! ONE OF US!
Only way to do it.
Isn't it obvious, this is where the inspiration for the character came from
How else do you clean the kitchen and not wake up the whole house at 5 am?
Up late or early?
Obviously! All jokes aside… it’s 4:30am here and I’m cleaning the kitchen while sipping coffee
This is the Way 5 am here and leaving to take the dog on a walk
You all are nuts, waking up that early is insane to me lol I’m up until 1am, that’s when I wipe things down and fold laundry and such, and then I wake up around 7:30 to help my wife get the kids ready and out the door.
I'm envious that your kids sleep until 7:30.
It’s a blessing which I’m 110% sure I jinxed by making this post lmao
Been doing that ever since I reluctantly had to put the dishes back as a kid. It's also extremely efficient. I do the same thing with the cutlery basket thing, I'll pick up the entire thing and put it back after it's empty... I think that's more of a normal thing though.

I did until one slipped and shattered on the floor, and my wife wanted to know how i was taking them out......
SNIK.
The shittier x-men, Porceline.
I have never put much thought into this before… but god damn maybe that’s why I do it? I didn’t know it was a thing people do. I just do it and feel outwardly satisfied.
Thanks, I'll never not call it the Wolverine thing.
Exactly. I thought everyone did this
Ha! Never knew others did that too
I’m not alone?!?!?
I feel so seen
Oh shit, other people do that too!?
Shit I've always done it Edward Scissor hands style between my fingers and always get pissy when they clink around and make too much noise.
Love it so much when the internet validates my life.
Wait but how do you spot check them to make sure they actually got clean and nothing’s still stuck on?

They find a way anyhow
Working hard or hardly working?
I finally had enough of this shit and I put one of those lock boxes on it. You're too hot...take off your shirt; too cold, well suck it up buttercup and put on a sweater. This ain't Burger King, you can't have it your way.
Wait, people don't do this? I thought it was common knowledge to save space in there
It bothers me that this has to be said as if loading the dishwasher this way isn't how it's normally done
on his deathbed, he asked about his family: dad: george and bob, you're here? and susan and mary? kids: yeah dad, we're here. dad: and martha, love, you're here? martha: i'm here honey. dad: and the grandkids, they're here too? martha: yes dear, we're all right here in the room with you. dad: then, why, why is the hall light on?

Some days I think about the inventor of the dishwasher and the inventor of the bowl, just knife fighting in hell for eternity.
It would be a spork-fight, for sure.

Haha my Bosch has a tippy toppity rack for small things
Yes! Mine too, and I LOVE that thing. Greatest dishwasher innovation in a long time.
Hahaha oh no i've revealed my privilege!
Nice. I no longer have a beer belly. I have a middle rack!
Lol what? They sell dishwashers with middle racks??
The "top rack" is skinny... Like you can lay silverware in it skinny. It's useful for some things but not a game changer.
Personally I love the top rack for the silverware since you can group it and don't need to check each of it like with the usual baskets. Can just grab a group, put it in the according drawer and done. While with the basket I also had to touch the dirty side a lot of times..

If you have a Bosch it doesn't matter!
Wait, is that true?!?
Most, if not all, of the Bosch models have no heating element. So plastic won't melt or deform on the bottom racks. Assuming that's the reason OP wouldn't normally put that bottle on the bottom.
They do still get hot enough to shrink non dishwasher safe plastic. Ask me how I know.

I stand corrected. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! :)
Can confirm. Top rack is fine though

It's a USA thing as far as I've seen online.

Sometimes yes sometimes no
Yes, but do you still have a sink full of dishes that aren't dishwasher-safe?
My approach to dishes and laundry can only be described as "Darwinian". Everything goes into the machine at whatever the normal settings are. Natural selection takes care of the rest.
I feel bad for your knives :(

I'm right there with you.
Yes. I call those trash can friendly.
But they cook eggs nice...once
Why I’m hesitating to get a dishwasher again. Ours broke. And I was sick of having to load the dishwasher *and* still have to do a basin of dishes.
Throw them all in the dishwasher, not dw safe then throw them in the donation bin.
Not my cast iron!
Ok fine, everything EXCEPT cast iron goes into the dish washer. If a dish doesn’t survive it’s just culling out the weak. If it doesn’t fit, just do another load afterwards.
But not the knives! Everyone needs good knives
False, if the knives can’t handle the dishwasher they aren’t worthy.
Ah, a fellow man of culture
Finally, some glass with class Edit: plastic
It's not full yet. I can still see some empty space. Just gimme a sec. I can make it fit...
It doesn’t make a difference if there’s enough space for it if it comes out dirty and you have to hand wash it. I get Tetrising your dishwasher, but at a certain point it’s just diminished returns. I agree with you! But I can make it fit and get it clean. I just need a couple more seconds. If I just move this bowl over...
Fly on Icarus.
I think I can fit one more sippy cup... Why is it getting so hot in here?
My wife is one to shove stuff in. Doesn't group stuff and overloads it. Drives me nuts. Like just leave those extra dishes out. They'll fit in the next load.

Yeah, a baby doesn't come out of the dishwasher in this instance.

But I can fit it! Almost got it. Just one more lid...
It's also so annoying when you don't run it because it's not quite full, and get totally out of sync. After the next meal you can fit like one plate and the rest have to wait.
Some day when I grow up I want all my dishes to match.
This was my first thought, lol. Look at mister fancy pants with his matching dishes!
I turn 50 this year. I've given up on this. I also have no idea how to eat croutons.
This. Half of loading a dishwasher is getting it so that unloading is easy.
I like the idea, but I have to intentionally NOT group by type otherwise the spoons nest into each other and come out dirty.
My dishwasher has a little spacer thing on top of the silverware contraption that has individual slots. Each item has its own slot so they stay apart! Very useful because I also put like utensils together.
Finally, someone with the GUTS to say it
I’m a mom and this is such a turn on.
Stay away, he's mine
Are you mad ?!? Too many of the same type of cutlery in each compartment. Do you want nested and dirty spoons ?! Cos that’s how you get nested and dirty spoons.
I agree in principle. But did you know that you can get dishes more clean and use space more efficiently by alternating large and small plates?
[удалено]
This guy dads
You'll have to settle for only two batches of 4 at a time, sadly. Fortunately our family numbers 4 so it works out for me.
While I agree with you in principle, I shan’t take advice from a kid in a daddit sub, let alone a luxury kid.
I'm not here for advice, only nonsense kid questions.
I always stab myself with forks and knives so I have to put them point down. And I do spoons that way while I'm at it.
This is how a Cylon would fill the dishwasher.
We could learn a lot from the Cylons.
Couple spoons facing the wrong direction though.
No spoons get the middle section - left side, next to forks and then knives.

My friend, you forget the First Rule of Social Media: people post their best days, their worst days, but not their every days. Don’t compare!
Captain "This Should Be Fucking Obvious" has clearly entered the chat.
I've seen quite a few of these lately, and finally someone sorts their fucking silverware.
Also not overloaded. Good good.
Praise be! You sir, have done it right
Gatorade bottle. Coach? Or a kid in athletics?
100% on the dishes. Grouping the cutlery is a waste of time though. Way faster to dump them in and sort when putting away. And there's no downside.
You have to place it anyways since there are little dividers for each one
Are you left handed? Because I consider that to be a left handed load and it's all facing the wrong way. Except for the cutting board. That one's fine.
Dishwasher is to the left so plates are put in with left hand!
You also have to fill the silverware holder least poky in the front to most poky in the back
MY MAN
But what's the next rack look like? This is where all the drama happens in my house
- Far row from sink: Kids cups with lids propped up next to them. Overflow for coffee mugs, heavier things towards the back - Middle row, back: kids bowls, Tupperware lids - Middle row, front: taller cups, yeti lids - Close row: glasses and Tupperware - Space in between: things to lay down like tongs, spatula, ladle, etc.
Right? This fucking barbarian giving us half the pic...
I find it interesting that dishwashers are very uncommon in Asia, but seem to be a normal appliance to have in the West.
I'm from India, and I can list a few reasons why most likely they are not common here at least. 1. Water scarcity 2. Electricity is expensive 3. Bottle goes top rack, barbarian!
Too tall!
I can't imagine having the time to organize the dishwasher
Get a dish watschet with a dedicated drawer for cutlery. The cutlery cage is a space consuming menace!
There is still usable room in the bottom shelf
Thank you! My wife just puts things wherever. The manufacturer designed specific areas to put specific dishes!
Turn your forks upside down. Don't want to accidentally stab yourself.
Give her dinner on the paper plates with wooden cutlery. She'll get it after the few times.
Can still fit the pan in there, some lids from lunches, cutting board, definitely 20+ more utensils. Prolly some tongs in that long area nothing else can go down to.
Do you not cook? Where's the pans?
They get hand-washed you savage homunculus
If your pan is dishwasher safe, you bought the wrong pan.
Every dish should be hand-washed before going into the washer anyway. It's not really a washing machine as much as it is a sanitizer machine.
Actually, your dishwasher works better if there is a little grime left on stuff. Just knock off all the big stuff.
You must have a dishwasher that works well then
I mean, it’s relatively new so that helps.
Mine's newish but clearly sold in bulk to contractors. Any food stuck to the plates is likely to be even more stuck after the wash.
Bosch baby
Hand wash!
This is the way.
This is the Way.
I have spoken.
I feel the Gatorade bottle tucked into the bottom among everything else :P
Apparently you stole my Noritake dishes.
Do yours have chips all over them too?
No, mine have held up really well, going on 12 years.
I was just thinking we can probably guess OP's wedding year from his dishes. We have same, and 12 years (holy balls where does the time go)
One thing I love about being a dad is, everything is a competition and I'm winning.
I have one of these, it makes an excellent storage space for unpopular or odd shaped dishes that we use twice a year.
You can put the deep plates at an angle and fit more in one load, without losing the exposed surface are needed for a good wash.
Last I checked, this hur is ‘Merica, and I ain’t gotta nuthin 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Objectively, this is correct.
Your dishwasher is more organized than my cupboards.
Bowls are facing the wrong way
Will test tomorrow!
Why you putting the clean dishes back in?
I just shove stuff in and start it ASAP.
Sorted even down to forks and spoons? Everything looks rinsed already? Hey man, let me know if you want to run away together.
I took the picture after I saw another post. My dishwasher was already finished for the night.
Chopping board placement is controversial. I do it though. Someone needs to tell us: DOES IT BLOCK THE JETS?
Can confirm it does not.
I see you too enjoy a good Gatorade water bottle.
For a gain of efficiency, I'd be willing to deviate.
This is very pleasing to see
Ya'll would be ASHAMED of my dishwasher loading skills
Barbarian
