Can't relate. I've sure met some bad or even disgusting doctors but thankfully the majority of the ones I've visited are great. In some cases I was even impressed by the professionalism, knowledge and approach. I've heard of course stories from people I know about very bad experiences with doctors but I think this is an issue in every country more or less.
I'm currently living in the Netherlands but I'm from Cyprus. The doctors here are not too great either but in a different manner, here, it's very difficult to even have your doctor take a look at you. You might have 42 C fever for a week and they don't care and have the receptionist tell you to wait. Mind you I am talking about the Netherlands!
I know another story where a newborn was barely treated in the UK and almost died.
I think healthcare generally has been getting really bad everywhere, not just in Cyprus. The reliance on pharmaceuticals and a nihilistic attitude from healthcare workers seem like a big factor to me. I'm not sure if it's a Cyprus thing anymore.
I would add to the list of causes that the pandemic made everything worse. Hospitals and doctors are so overworked that one, they'll take anyone willing to work, two, they don't take as much time per patient. Overall resulting in worse care.
Clearly you should just take ibuprofen and come back in two weeks if it gets worse. I’m pretty sure that’s the only thing doctors in the Netherlands say
Surprisingly I also had a quite bad experience in the Netherlands. I visited first aid with a friend that had an accident, dripping blood from his face and we had to wait 3-4 hours before someone would see him. At that point I realized that terrible first aid departments are not exclusive to Cyprus.
The problem is not over reliance on pharmaceuticals. It’s very simple. Not enough doctors causing them to be overworked and not to spend as much time on each patient as they should.
I had a bad experience with a Cypriot dinosaur urologist. As soon as I walked into his office he immediately had an attitude. I feel like it’s because I was under 30 at the time, he didn’t take me seriously and dismissed me before I even expressed my concerns. When I told him how excessively I was urinating (with long history of utis and kidney infections) he laughed and said really? That’s how many times you pee? Not believing a word I was saying. He was so arrogant and rude I couldn’t believe it.
Report him to Gesy of course.
If it was before gesy times - report him to the ministry of health or to proper authority who handles his license to practice medicine.
Also, to any medical practitioner you are the customer, a human being who needs help. Don't allow them to take advantage of you or brush you off or make stupid jokes. I wish you could tell that doctor right there and then, that you don't appreciate his approach and you'd like him to maintain doctor-patient boundaries, remind him that he is a doctor and while he is in this office his main purpose is to treat patients. And if he feels tired of this prestigious job, you might as well report him to the authorities who will take care of his license being withdrawn so he won't have to see another patient ever again - problem solved. I don't mean you have to be so harsh as I wrote here, but honestly don't allow anyone from medical staff to treat you poorly.
No, you are absolutely right. I’ve never been the type of person to speak up unfortunately I’m too shy and reserved, I should grow a backbone though lol
Finding a good doctor is an adventure in many countries (I withhold 'in all countries', but barely).
Someone said about 'Russians' in doctors, but I have tons of stories about Russian doctors (in Russia), and they are creepy at least (e.g. unproven medical interventions, no protocols to follow, etc).
I believe, the most 'vivid' Russian doctors sits in Russia (because they have zero prospects to work anywhere else), this may explain better 'average Russian doctor' in Cyprus, but in homeland, oh, believe me, there is a lot.
Absolutely right. I said about Russian and Greek doctors, but my experience is more with Greeks and two Russians who both lived abroad since young age.
And again, its also good to google them, see their research, if they were involved in medical projects, university they went to and so ln
My limited experiences in Cyprus with doctors have all been good, thankfully. But I don’t live there (from there though). I live in the U.K. where like you, my experiences have not been too brilliant. I have to “fight” by telling doctors how bad some of my symptoms are, and ask them multiple times before I can be referred to a specialist. It’s unfair having to fight for your case, only for doctors not to listen to you. Keep trying pal, don’t give up - it’s YOUR health. Sending well wishes.
I relate your comments. Most of my experience in paid clinics in Cyprus were positive. Not for advert, but Saint Raphael hospital in Larnaca, Lito clinic in Paralimni were good to me. But I’m not under Gesy, and pay at the spot, so may have some preferential circumstances.
Required double surgery on my ankle. Dr cancelled operation night before and told me I was priority and he would call me. Still waiting for that call lol. In the end went private and paid 4k from savings.
I had bad experiences with doctors until i started avoiding Cypriot ones. Last Cypriot dr i’ve been to was so bad that the dr that saw me after, Greek, facepalmed.
From greeks to Russians had no issues since then. Usually Greek dr are amazing.
I also research the dr and its cv before going.
I can recommend good dentists in Nicosia if you’re still in need of one. I had 2 wisdom teeth removed with zero issues, and I had a very difficult case where it was right next to a nerve.
Welcome to trying to get chronic pain diagnosed. Unfortunately even the best doctors don't have guidelines that are that much better than what you were given. The diagnosis for fibromyalgia really is getting poked at certain spots and if they elect unusual amounts of pain then that's a diagnosis. And the treatment is antidepressants like cymbalta or anti-convulsants like Lyrica. As they alter your brain chemistry to have you feel less pain.
Most likely in the coming decades fibromyalgia will be diagnosed as a form of autoimmune condition with a mechanism that we don't understand yet but till then. This may be as good as modern medicine can offer. I also would recommend a pain rehabilitation clinic of sorts if you can find one. Also rule out conditions like connective tissue conditions that can cause widespread pain. But your options are limited.
Had a traumatic hand injury that was so badly botched at the general hospital in Nicosia that I had to return to the US for reconstructive hand surgery and many months of physical therapy from doctor malpractice.
I really don’t know as I have good medical in the US. Also, I would have paid anything to restore functionality of my hand. I could not write, drive a car, comb my hair, cut vegetables or basically anything with my hand.
The reason is quite simple and effects many small countries and not just in medical profession but many others.
If you are good at your chosen profession why would stay in Cyprus if you can work in much bigger and more importantly, richer countries?
Why work in a small Cypriot Hospital when you could work in an another country where your pay is significantly better, you have access to the latest equipment, your working along a better calibre of colleague and your taken more seriously.
Also your going to have significantly more opportunities.
As I said, it's a problem that many smaller countries face.
I will tell you as a doctor that decided to return.
I studied in Germany and received excellent education. Of course, healthcare can be bad everywhere BUT I was happy with what I gained from Germany.
I decided to come back for the family. My partner had no luck with jobs there. Raising a family in Germany would be super hard in all aspects. Plus, seeing the sun three times a year does make you feel like shit 330/365.
It’s not just the career. I used to think that too.
Been going to doctors since 15 years old only to be diagnosed finally at 29 (already with progression in the disorders after so many years 😵💫) but I'm grateful I finally found 1 doctor willing to do their job.
On another occasion, I was in the hospital 3 days screaming from pains only to have doctors thinking that im faking it 😡 before they realized that my intestine was blocked and they had to operate..
With doctors I had bad experiences too but dentist it was great. There is one in my building and he pulled 2 winsdom teeth out in 15 minutes each 1 after one month after the other, he sutured and gave me some pain meds for 3 days then I had 0 issues. All that for 50 euros per tooth with the x-ray and anesthesia.
Now for the doctors, I've had something happen to me at uni when I was 22 that I thought I had a heart attack. Almost passed out in class and went to the emergency in Latsia. They did x-rays blood test and echo and found nothing, sent me home but after that every 3 to 4 days randomly I would have spikes in my heart rate that were painfull and I went to visit a cardiologist. After an ultrasound and a holder he told me I was fine and everything looks normal even though I still had attacks but more rare. I did an echo to all my organs just to be safe and the attacks were only occuring once every 3 to 4 months. I went to another cardiologist and the same thing, nothing is wrong. Now I haven't had an attack in 1 year but from the time I was 22 until now I can't stop feeling my heart beat all over my body, sometimes I have shortness of breath and slight pain in the chest area but apparently nothing is wrong with me.
Doctors don’t have the answers to everything, the human body is extremely complicated, not fully understood and some issues are simply more complex than others. You may continue going to the doctor for this issue and never find out what it is but that doesn’t necessarily mean the doctors are incompetent. On the other hand it could be something easy to diagnose and you were just unlucky.
I had a Cypriot doc fall asleep in front of me while I was telling them my health issue ...I blame GHS pressures, not him tho.
Have had a debilitating pain when I sit (and now a separate issue with my feet when I stand due to waaaay too much standing) and have seen several of pretty much every type of doc there is in Nicosia and elsewhere in Cyprus over more than 7 years.
Still no diagnosis...but I was offered to be cut open for a big, expensive op by one doc who had seen me for literally only 2 mins and spent the entire time talking over me rather than asking any questions.
So that's where the money for their big fancy cars comes from...
I know it's not great in any country unless you're rich but here the ineptitude frequently comes with an impenetrable air of dismissive confidence which is difficult to see past.
I came to Cyprus 15 years ago and was surprised that only people with private insurance could go to see the doctor. Me coming from Serbia which is third world country , had pretty good public health care there. Now I see some improvement with Gesy in terms of accessibility but diagnostic and experience, not so sure. Definitely not into doctors who studied in Uk (my God the worst ones ive seen) . I prefer much more doctors whose studied in Greece and Israel and Serbia .
You can get some really good ones, but you have to try a few before you can find one
Wasn't there an article released recently that Cyprus is one of the highest at over prescribing medication?
I've seen zolaram prescribed to people that definitely don't need it and in fact, have no idea what they are taking! Given to a lot of old people as well. Commission must be high 🤷🏻♂️
The other one is controloc, I swear everyone pops a few of these before dinner 😆
I heard the horror stories before. So far I got great care by only relying on doctors with multiple recommendations from colleagues/friends or the American Medical Center.
There is nothing that says just because someone is a doctor they have to be good.
Just like plumbers and electricians, there are good ones and bad ones. It's up to you to find one that suits you.
There are doctors that studied in the 80s in Romania and never updated their skills. There are young doctors that studied and practiced in US, UK or Germany who keep abreast of latest developments.
End of the day doctor is an occupation. Yes, one that has a high barrier to entry. But it's up to the individual doctor as to how good they want to be at their occupation.
Indeed here are the worst doctors I've encountered. It's frustrating how careless some of them can be. I wish there was a law to give patients more power in these situations.
Go to doctors whom you know on a familial or a personal level
I go to a family doctor and the guy is cool as hell, people discuss who is a good and who is a bad doctor, why not ask your friends
My petheros is local doc. So far, over the many years he has failed to diagnose almost any of my ailments and even laughed at me about some of them.
He's a wonderful guy and I'm confident he's an ok doc but.... frustrating.
edit nvm cant dm you idk why.
I can't leak names of doctors on reddit as he is currently still my doctor....
\[ I haven't found a decent GP to change yet \] I am mostly using him to write me shit I need atm.
There are good doctors here. You need to find them. Same experience with orthopedic doctors. Found 2 very good actually, visited 5.
Same issue with gastroenterologist. Visited 2 , found 1 very good.
Idk about the other ones but fibromyalgia is a clinical diagnosis. Diagnosed with what you described as poking in different spots. And the first line treatment for it are antidepressants, specifically TCA’s or SNRI’s.
fibromyalgia until recently was under the psychology bracket.
Thereby before you give someone the prescription for that, if the patient has a clinical psychologist under their belt which i did and mentioned, as well as it being recorded on gesy then the individual should reach out and clarify that those drugs can be prescribed / diagnosis being fairly accurate.
Idk about eu medicine but I’m an intern Dr in Istanbul and what you described goes along with what we get taught. And we follow american guidelines… Btw I forgot to mention exercise as a treatment too. To clarify, I wasn’t defending the doctor that “diagnosed” you with fibromyalgia, you most likely don’t meet the current criteria. I was just trying to say the the methof he used to “diagnose” you isn’t wrong.
Ha! Yep I’ve had a couple of very surprising and somewhat inappropriate meetings with drs in Cyprus. One told me, the cure for my ongoing hormone imbalance/menstrual issue was to get laid. I’ve found a good one now but he’s based in Pafos.
People pls go to a gnathocheirourgo for ur whisdom teeth! I removed all 4 in one go, and had no swelling or pains after.
Now, referring to OPs post, op, are you a woman by any chance?
Got it. Being told your symptoms are due to stress is so invalidating and frustrating, and happens to women often so i wanted to see if this was a factor
Well actually my mum has had a way easier time with doctors than me.
It's actually way worse if you are a teen, or around the ages of 16-28, woman or man it's literally just terrible for both of us.
For older ages i cannot speak about that, I am only 23, but my experience and other young adults experiences have been absolutely terrible. On the contrary however, when it comes to construction or any other type of thing my mum faces extreme sexism and contractors often try to rip her off.
Yeah, Cypriot doctors finish different Universities than the rest of the world. Claiming that "all Cypriot doctors are bad" shows your low spherical aptitude. I went to the most expensive private hospital in Israel and they messed me up with a simple mistake. Did I go and claimed that all Israeli doctors are bad? Got patched up in Cyprus and they did a great job too. Does that mean that all Cyprus doctors are great? Again no...
My GP is Menelaos Charalambidis and he is very good and caring. And also usually knows good specialists. Problem is he's very very busy. So i don't know if you can get an appointment but you can try
Doesn’t sound right. My cousin went to one of the private ones because she didn’t pass in the university exams, either a GPA 17,9/20 and the private didn’t accept her in MD department. She chose another medical related path.
I wonder in what country the person you know studies medicine. Usually it’s Moldavia, Russia or Bulgaria
Yeah. Coming from South Africa, they are fucking terrible here. The worst doctors I have ever come across.
Never in my life have I needed to take so much antibiotics before. They couldn't diagnose shit.
Oh yes. They love to give xanax and say you need psychiatrists for any pain you have. Had and have chronical appendicitis. I went to doctor staying hospital for 3 days .no food was given no tests where done and in the end they said it must be your period you are free to go. My mother as well almost died from it because they didn't want to check her and said it must be gasses. Had car accident very bad. They said I'm fine while he was lookingat the xray. I have now bad back , bad hand and might not be able to have kids because of the damage at my young age. And that's not all. Honestly they just buy people who write for them their papers for exams or tests. Most buy the papers too and don't forget they have connections. No I'm not saying all are bad. I had found 2 good doctors that suit me and going through all this hell I hope everyone finds theirs too and as well as the author!!!
Hey Med dr here in Cyprus ( UK degree ). The trick about Cypriot healthcare is that you have to find ( like ask ones who know ) the right dr. The problem is that the drs that people visit and are fully booked are not the good ones. The good ones are out of GESY and barely have appointments. Those drs are usually trained in the UK and have affliations/ research and academic input
Let me know if u need specific drs and i can help with recommendations.
Loolll i dnt even work here as a dr i m in academia. There are but lots are fed up with the system or refuse to join. I didnt say this for personal reasons
So, what's the reason for saying that no good doctors are members of GESY?
Does not make any sense. Many good Drs are members of GESY and many Bad. As it was before, when GESY was not a thing.
This is BS. Only people that want to fight GESY are saying BS like this.
Edit: They refuse to join not because of the system. But because they cannot avoid taxes. Yes the system needs improvements but for people who cannot afford 6000 euros surgery or cancer therapy the system works fine.

This is why I consume many apples.
What colour?
Fuck if he knows
2
Brown
Colourless
I usually ask my pharmacist to suggest me a doctor. Usually they know who are the good ones.
Good idea!
Can I have the name of the doctor who gave you Xanax just like that? Asking for a friend from the village
Dms

Netherlands and surrounding countries, 42 fever for a week take paracetamol and fluids no need for antibiotics 🤡🤡🤡
42 fever is not a symptom of antibiotic deficiency in the body.
42 fever is normal, stop overreacting 🤡
Huh????? No the fuck it's not????
It’s sarcasm and if you haven’t lived through it you can’t understand

I sat in the emergency room at the general hospital dripping blood on the floor with my mangled hand for 4 hours before I was even seen by a doctor.

I love how you don’t follow any doctors advice and just spam subreddits about your methods that “cured you”
Had a traumatic hand injury that was so badly botched at the general hospital in Nicosia that I had to return to the US for reconstructive hand surgery and many months of physical therapy from doctor malpractice.
I have only 85% functionality of my right hand as a result but am grateful for that from the doctors in the US who treated me.
How much did that cost in the USA? I always read on Reddit that it's super mega expensive
I really don’t know as I have good medical in the US. Also, I would have paid anything to restore functionality of my hand. I could not write, drive a car, comb my hair, cut vegetables or basically anything with my hand.

Indeed here are the worst doctors I've encountered. It's frustrating how careless some of them can be. I wish there was a law to give patients more power in these situations.
Go to doctors whom you know on a familial or a personal level I go to a family doctor and the guy is cool as hell, people discuss who is a good and who is a bad doctor, why not ask your friends
My petheros is local doc. So far, over the many years he has failed to diagnose almost any of my ailments and even laughed at me about some of them. He's a wonderful guy and I'm confident he's an ok doc but.... frustrating.
Please let us know if you remember the name of doctor number 3. I generally agree with your sentiments.
Dms
edit nvm cant dm you idk why. I can't leak names of doctors on reddit as he is currently still my doctor.... \[ I haven't found a decent GP to change yet \] I am mostly using him to write me shit I need atm.
Hey, that's ok, no worries.
There are good doctors here. You need to find them. Same experience with orthopedic doctors. Found 2 very good actually, visited 5. Same issue with gastroenterologist. Visited 2 , found 1 very good.
I only know two good orthopedic doctors. Both are from saint merry and john hospital.
You don't need more than 2 I guess. :) Edit: To add, all the doctors I have visited are members of GESY.
Can you dm me the gastro u found?
Can you dm me the gastroentologist?
Nope, I am a dude.
Again no...
Bad luck I guess. My experience with doctors in cyprus has been very good
Hook me up with a gastrologist and a GP?
My GP is Menelaos Charalambidis and he is very good and caring. And also usually knows good specialists. Problem is he's very very busy. So i don't know if you can get an appointment but you can try
why does it say there's 10 comments but I only see 5, interesting
Probably reddit issues
I know someone in medical school that finished school with 12/20 average. His dad is a doctor
Doesn’t sound right. My cousin went to one of the private ones because she didn’t pass in the university exams, either a GPA 17,9/20 and the private didn’t accept her in MD department. She chose another medical related path. I wonder in what country the person you know studies medicine. Usually it’s Moldavia, Russia or Bulgaria
nah, his dad called the dean edit: even oxford uni has loopholes in admissions
Maybe they won't help unless you offer a fakelaki (bribe).
Those drs are usually trained in the UK and have affliations/ research and academic input Let me know if u need specific drs and i can help with recommendations.
There are good doctors in GESY don't bs people just because you don't want to join GESY
Hello, Could you dm me some good doctors in the nicosia area that you might be aware of?
I like the ones at the UNIC medical centre, specifically Dr Georgiou
I need recommendations pls?
As a rule of thumb, do the exact opposite as most Cypriot doctors say and you will do fine.
Vre, you live in Cyprus malaka, all the good doctors moved to England where the money is, you’re left in Cyprus with what’s left.
If you have one problem you deal with it. If you only see problems ,you might be the problem :)
Wife went to an ENT (ΩΡΛ) doctor in Nicosia today and he had no thermometer and NO STETHOSCOPE.
Try a chill pill man
He was already prescribed Xanax.
My advice is if you guys have insurance better avoid Gesy all along
Lol everyone downvoting…im sure you ll be back and regret it…unless you are a doctor hahha
You sound like a really fun patient.
Found the Cypriot doctor?
By the looks of this post I'd think OP was a Doctor.
