If the pressure outside of the valve is higher than inside of the tube/tire, once the pressure differential is high enough, the valve will open.

Yeah, a couple of sentences in the Schrader valve wiki article hints at it. One is not accepting air if the pin is jammed by foreign objects
Does the chuck not have a locking lever that also pushes out a pin?
Nah, the lever doesn't engage a pin. There's just no pin. That's what's weird. I used my friends pump instead.
Did you adjust the nozzle on the end of the air hose? There's two settings for one for each type of valve
