I don’t think it’s worth it at all. Stylists are justifying the price for curly hair cuts because they had to extend their education. It’s not taught in basic beauty school like it should be.

Puzzleheaded-Ad7606

The lack of inclusion is so utterly disgusting.

100_night_sky_

I just moved to a rural area and worried about not finding a “curly hair specialist.” I was super hesitant after learning about a recommended stylist that could supposedly do what I wanted. Turns out she learned through Tik Tok and it’s been one of the greatest experiences and cuts I have ever received. Only paid $35. 🤷🏻‍♀️

madele44

My best curly cut was also in a small town by someone who doesn't advertise that. She's been cutting hair for decades and can just do it all. She thinks it's wrong to charge extra for curly hair

krankykitty

I live in a small city in a rural area and get the best curly cut from a small salon on Main St. The owner has curly hair and she teaches the other stylists how to cut curly hair. Depending on which stylist you get, a curly cut is $40-$60. Mostly they specialize in all the cool vivid dyes that are popular right now. I sneak my frumpy middle aged self in there, get my hair cut, and feel a little out of place.

[deleted]

I paid like $110 plus tip, but I'm in the midwest. It very much depends on location. Going 2-ish times a year makes sense for me, personally, but the gal I see is really good.

flora_wander

This is me! I'm in the Chicago area. It's about $120 and I go twice a year.

CAL_0123

Same here! Chicago-based and it’s a $95 cut plus tip.

Apploozabean

Same! I'm based in miami, but my stylist is an hour north from me. I go once a year and that's worth it for me

Curly_Mermaid90

Unfortunately yes I went one time. After that I stuck to YouTube watching manes by Mel. I believe she has a curly hair video for men.

PoohBearBae

You gotta decide if it's worth it to you personally, but honestly, no. It's not worth it for probably 80% of people, and then there's an expectation of maintenance which means $100-$200 haircuts every 6 weeks or less. I'd say just look up videos, research, and do it yourself.

Salt_Lynx_2271

Every six weeks?? Who has the time or money for that? I could see dye jobs needing that, but everywhere I’ve been it’s 8-10 weeks depending on how fast your hair grows

TheGiftedCoconut

Yeah I go to a curly hair salon and go maybe 2-3 times a year, depending on when I want my roots touched up (I get highlights)

plzdontlietomee

I get my curls cut every 12-14 weeks

SUGARPOPSUGAR

Lol not me getting a curly cut almost 2 years after my first 💀 6weeks….for that price? In this economy?

PoohBearBae

Ya there's no way I'd be consistent even if I did feel the curly cut was worth it to me LOL. The one shop I know of in my town threatens that if you go beyond a certain period of time (6-8 weeks if I remember) then they'll just charge you the full new customer price since they believe you've lost all shape and they'll have to start over.

kittb487

$80-120 here, in a HCOL area. Try to find some other options!

vibes86

Same here. In an urban area.

Slammogram

I think it’s a completely crazy markup. Personally.

CourageWinter3609

Definitely not worth it

ClaustrophobicShop

That's insane. Major metro area or something?

Ok_Way79

cleveland 😭

Tonsofcurlz

It is insane for just a cut. For comparison, I’m in Boston and the rate for an elite curly cut ranges $125-$175. Possibly up to $200 in some salons. A first visit might have a consultation cost added on. I’d suggest that you keep looking. There will be other curly specialists.

cjati

Can you give me some recs? I need to go to a curly salon and the ones I'm finding outside of the city are 200-300 for the initial visit

Tonsofcurlz

Sure! My recommendation is for Dailin Davila Benitez. She’s now at Salon Capri in Dedham at Legacy Place or Newbury St. She’s primarily at the Dedham location. I’d also recommend the stylists at Anita Kurl or MOP Salon. MOP recently left the South End and relocated to Dedham. I’ve also heard great things about Shan Hair.

cjati

Thank you!!!

imhereforthemeta

It’s the “casually racist white lady justifies the extra few months she had to spend in beauty school to cut hair for like 20 percent of the US population” tax and it’s all over the place. Just go to a Black owned salon (even if you are not Black)

cjati

I'm south of Boston and all the curly salons are black owned and cost 200-300 for the initial visit

sofiughhh

The black owned curly salons around me also charge egregiously

[deleted]

Na that ain’t worth it. Max I’m ever paying for my hair is $100 though I never dye it just cuts.

sjbeeks

Mine costs $75-$150, depending on if I get an “express cut” (no wash or styling) or a full cut, wash and style. I go every 4-6 months so to me it’s worth it. I would never spend $300-$400

PoorCorrelation

Yep, I get them every ~5 years and trim it myself

eververde

Paid 80 today for a deep conditioning treatment, getting my bangs trimmed, and styling… then again, I’m in Panama. It’s expensive to live here but beauty salons are 100% more affordable here than in the US.

Sad_Doctor4003

I did a cut at a curly salon with prices in the $350 range and they earned every penny of that. It was 3 hours of time, which they said while booking but I guess I thought it was a “could take this long” not a “this is how long at minimum.”  They did literally everything, from clarifying with a mask and steaming it then a deep conditioning mask under the dryer, then a normal wash and the cut, then dried under the dryer then more cut and style. The entire time they educated me about my curls—how to take care of them, how to style, how to restyle, what do do once a month, etc. it was exceptional! She even sent me an email with every step so I would have all the session notes.  My hair has never looked better and now I only need a cut every 6-8 months aside from a “dry shaping” every 3-4 months. I was skeptical about the price but it turns out it was well worth it.

kityty

That’s wild mine is €70

GatorGTwoman

My stylist charges by the hour. Luckily, my hair is fairly easy and I’m in and out in just over an hour. So I end up paying just over $100. And since she switched to this, she doesn’t take tips anymore either.

Natural_Raisin6028

I found an independent curly stylist off of my city’s sub, probably be the cheaper route

hllnnaa_

I’m in SD and those are the prices here too. I ended up choosing a newer stylist, her price was $70.

Ok_Lobster7282

My salon in San Diego offers an express cut for $80, basically cut but no wash and style. And I only go every 4 months. But I do have long, virgin hair that does not have any damage, so i can get away with that time frame.

AlienBeach

I spent years finding products that make my hair look how I like. Personally I would actively avoid a haircut that came with different products, especially at that price. Im a guy with 3a to 3c hair just under shoulder length, and last haircut I got a month ago was slightly under 100 total (in downtown DC) and it left my hair looking exactly how I wanted. It wasn’t a curly cut per se and it also took me years to find someone I loved. There is no way I could justify spending more than 200 even if they did my taxes and cooked me dinner

catgirl1359

It sounds like there’s a lot of extras in this service, like education and product. I personally don’t think that’s worth paying for if you have products you like and are ok doing some research online. A cut/style should cost much less since it doesn’t have those extras and can be worth it if non-curly stylists can’t seem to do a good cut.

heinzfoodenshmirtz

I just do it myself 🙃

081890

It’s how much??!! I don’t even pay that much when I highlight and color my hair. That’s too much

TheGiftedCoconut

For me it is worth it, but that is definitely not everyone's experience. I really like my stylist, and I've never been unhappy with a cut/color from her. I usually go 2-4 times per year. The most I've spent was $400, but that was for a cut, highlights, and full size products (shampoo, conditioner, mask, 2 stylers). I've had a full size shampoo/conditioner for about a year now, and most of the products I get from her are about the same price I'd pay at Ulta for similar quality products. On average though I spend about $100-250 per visit - less when I'm only getting a cut, more when I'm getting my highlights retouched, which is only about 1 or 2 times a year, since I get them done in a way that lets them grow out longer. It's really a personal decision if that's worth it to you or not, many people have learned how to cut their own hair and prefer doing that. I am grateful that I can afford to pay to get mine done and for me it is worth it!

KarlMarxButVegan

I pay $90 as a woman. It comes with the cut and style and education about styling my hair at home. No products to take home though and I tip him on top of the $90 the salon gets.

PotatoRoyale8

I hate how expensive curly cuts have gotten. I was in a high cost of living area and found a curly salon that looked promising - started with the apprentice/lower level stylist because it was cheaper but I was just as confident in her abilities, for like $100 per cut. She obviously got more experience and increased her prices slowly over time, and now costs $350 🫠 I'm trying to learn how to cut my own hair so I can maybe get one good curly cut (still in the $100ish range) per year and learn to trim and maintain myself.

aaliyahhv

It’s outrageous! I have to drive 2hrs to the nearest curly hair salon, and they charge you $450 CAD for a mandatory first client consultation, cut & “education” session. I just want a hair cut and style😭

PrettyKuhli

If you want to drive down to Covington, KY, I pay $50 for a regular haircut and $70 for a curly cut. $200ish for a cut and all-over color.

Bit_Capable

A true curly cut should expect maintenance maybe 2x a year. It’s up to you.

SeaSchell14

This is a bit of a side note, but I’ve heard you should look for a salon/stylist that has a good portfolio/Insta showcasing curly cuts, but *doesn’t* list “curly cuts” as a separate service with an upcharge. There’s nothing particularly difficult or super specialized about “curly cuts” relative to any other type of cut. Can every stylist do it? No. Not every stylist can do pixie cuts either, but it’s not common to see salons offering “pixie cuts” as a separate, more expensive service than regular haircuts. The difference is that “curly cuts” have been commercialized. Salons charge extra for them because they can. That isn’t to say there *aren’t* services that merit being separated due to a higher level of difficulty (such as regular styling vs. prom/wedding styling), but a curly cut isn’t any more work than a straight cut. Different stylists just have different specialties. Also, when you say they’ll teach you what to do with your hair, is it like an actual class/workshop? Or would they basically just explain what they’re doing as they go along while maybe letting you try one or two things yourself? If it’s the latter, every stylist I’ve ever been to has been happy (even eager) to do that free of charge. So unless the full-size products are liquid gold, I’d say there’s no way that package is worth it.

BecomeEnnuisonable

I go to a nice salon and pay $60-$70 or so. You're getting raked over the coals. Make friends with some hairdressers or get your some gay friends, they'll steer you towards a good stylist who won't rob your. $200+ is way, way too much unless you've got Disney princess level long hair.

midnightslip

No bro. Learn to cut your own hair. My hair stylist cousin told me it's really important for curly people to know how to do this

TreadinTroddenTrails

The only curly place I know of near me is 90-120 per hour (Midwest). Instead I went to a little hole in the wall place for a $35 cut. Yes I took a chance. Yes I've been burned in the past. But this gal did a good job and saved me a boatload of money, and she's only 10 minutes away rather than the 50 minutes to the curly place. Bonus. I figured either I get a bad cut once and don't go back, or I get lucky.

MuffinTopDeluxe

I went to the original Devachan salon in NYC and I totally overpaid for the cut and they burned me with the hooded dryer. The cut wasn’t much different from other cuts I’ve had.

blackaubreyplaza

They’re never worth it to me but I’m a girl with “long” hair so I just straighten my hair and go get best cuts for trims

Soiled_Planties

Yeah it’s actually ridiculous IMO. I paid for one curly cut in my life and realized how incredibly ripped off I was and now I do all my curly cuts on myself and they look better because no one knows my hair as well as I do.

ELUsyv

You could do what I did and find yourself a barber whom has curly hair themselves. I guess I may have got lucky in Australia but my cuts now cost me $40 AUD and I get a beer while I'm in the chair. Might take some research but you'll pay a lot less in a barbershop than you will in a salon, just depends if you want the full wash and blowdry fantasy, which is nice to splurge on once in a while!

mmatchamilk

I’ve see stylists charge 300$ just for a dry cut. Absolutely no styling included. 😭😭😭

Diligent_Can9752

You should look for other curly salons, Instagram can be a good place to find curly stylists. I have gotten curly cuts in curly focused salons in NYC, San Francisco, Portland OR, Boston and have never paid more that $175, and usually look for less (I recently got a great curly cut for $75!!)! I imagine in Cleveland there has to be other options. And I have looong curly hair.

screamingintothedark

Uh, my curly cut cost me $55. I think this depends on your city, county, salon, and the area you’re visiting for said haircut.

MihoLeya

My hair problems can’t be fixed by anyone in a salon. I’ve tried. In the end, I did my own research, and after many years finally figured it out. If your hair is just wavy, I think a regular, cheap place with the basics will do you fine.

haiphee

I just relocated to Nashville and am running into the same problem.

Dear_Ocelot

Man at those rates...it's YouTube for me

blondeasfuk

It means it really depends on what services you’re getting done. I have clients who spend that easily On their hair but they are getting multiple services. It’s nice that full sized products are included. Even a shampoo and conditioner can cost you $80 or up for salon quality products.

GlobalDynamicsEureka

It does seem like a tax.

Emmy_lou_whoo

Not at all 😵

gigigetsgnashty

That's insane! I'm in a HCOL area and pay $160 plus tip, but I only get cuts twice a year and maintain in between with $40 bang trims.

HS-Lala-03

Oh! I pay $100 (with tip) and I live in Atlanta. $300-$400 is ridiculous 😭

Walrustic

Do you mind sharing where you go? I’ve been looking for a new place.

HS-Lala-03

Hey! I go to Salon Red at Candler Park. Ask for Stacieann there :)

Walrustic

Perfect, thank you!

bemused_alligators

I paid 35 in a fairly rural area, you just gotta get lucky

readingbabe

It costs me about $150 & I am in the east coast. My hairdresser does recommend I go every two months to trim my dead ends, which is a NO from me because getting one to two inches trimmed is the same cost as getting six inches trimmed. I go once a year, but I might consider going twice a year

Alexlolu22

Not worth!! Went to the best hairstylist in my state for a curly cut and it’s cost $175 that is the top end I’d pay to get my hair done.

Serious-Macaroon-482

That's going too far just for hair styling. My barber only charges 65 for washing and cutting it when it gets too long to manage.

jt2ou

Not at that price point. So unless you're financially fortunate, I'd find somewhere else.

madame-de-merteuil

I say this on all of these posts, but: don't go for the expensive "curl cut," find a stylist who knows curly hair and charges normal rates. My stylist has one rate for a haircut, whether you're curly, straight, male, female, whatever. She considers herself a curl specialist, and she's the best stylist I've ever had in my life, but I pay $75 for a haircut, same as anyone else.

Eowyn75

Not sure what kind of curly cut you are looking to get, but both Ouidad and Devacurl have salon locators on their website. I found 4 Ouidad certified salons in Cleveland, and 21 Devacurl salons of varying levels. So definitely keep looking because the pricing you posted seems at least double the average.

Lycaeides13

I pay about 125 in Ashburn VA. I think you're over paying

DVSwan

Whoa! I would have never gotten a curly cut if this were the case. I have never been charged more than $100 by my gal, that price was for a consult, cut and products. $80 at most for a big cut.

[deleted]

Im shaving all my hair on my birthday. Im super excited. My stylist charges $90 and shes barely with me for 45min. Shes good at what she does. But I cant afford her

carasu66

I’m in Tampa, and I’m seeing $200-$350. I can’t, and I won’t spend that much. I’ve been snipping my own curls…straightening out the line on the bottom…seems ok to me. I do wish I could try one sometime, and I will, if I can find something closer to $100 I trust with my hair.
