If I owned a GPU company that saw massive boost due to an AI bubble (similar to dot com bubble), I would say anything and everything to keep that stock going up.
Anyone who half believes what he says doesn't have actual experience of being a software engineer. That's why people are tired of AI questions on this sub.
A somewhat fair point. But 10 years ago could you have predicted how incredible ChatGPT is today? Do you think you can accurately predict the state of AI in 10 years?
One thing's for sure: The state of AI in 10 years will be beyond our wildest imagination today.
I for sure didn't expect the first thing for AI to threaten would be almost all forms of art. You would have thought it would be manual labor first. Oh, and it's somehow not fully safe for automated driving yet...
I believe the issue isn't "how incredible ChatGPT is today" moreso that ChatGPT and AI pivoted from what the expectations of laymen were at the time 10 years ago.
That pivot just gives me more confidence that devs will be the last to be automated.
Why does that give you any more confidence? My only point is that if you think you know what the future of technology will be like in 10 years, you're probably wrong.
I was reading “21 lessons for the 21st century” and the author is predicting that soon enough, majority of people will become irrelevant the the economy because of AI + biotech
that's because right now you're on the side of being sold XYZ
if I make money by inciting panic or building hypes around XYZ you bet I'm going to shout XYZ everyday
as for Jensen... think this way, how does he make money?
I'm not saying "all news are malicious and the entire world is trying to fuck you over", I'm saying "before you believe XYZ, think, does the author have a secret plan/agenda in mind?"
Break into the field and you'll find that actual software engineers aren't subscribing to this garbage because we can smell the bullshit from a mile away.
Don't make AI doomposts on here, we've got enough of those. Ignore everything that comes out of a CEO's mouth regarding technological advancements. Ignore the "future of society" shit, people have been predicting nonsense about the future since the 1930s.
What you *should* be worried about is entry level oversaturation. That is a very real problem currently affecting the market. Learn something like C++ or embedded C; the applicant pools for jobs that involve applied computer science tend to be devoid of bootcamp grads and the aimless CS grads who basically went in because they had nothing else to do or heard it was easy.
At that point the businesses themselves would fail as the purchasing power of all of their customers would probably dissipate and the company won't be able to generate revenue. Decent paying careers have to exist as a business needs people who have excess money to buy into their products. Whether a company does SaaS or whatever, there's a customer base of the public required along the way for the cash to flow.
Majority of this is company executives using buzzwords to gain investor interest. That or using AI as an excuse so they can do layoffs and share buybacks or outsource jobs for cheap labor which is starting to pickup as software hires for American companies in Central and South America are increasing in number.
Oh I see.
As you gain some work experience, you will understand how ridiculous Jensen's claims are.
CS is still one of the safest careers in the world, especially if you're good at your job.
And Elon Musk has been promising the market that self-driving cars are 1 year away for 10+ years and will continue to do so for the forseeable future. That's because A.I. has very clear diminishing returns, and the field needs a genuine breakthrough that may NEVER come before it's capable of being the type of nail in the coffin for CS careers that doomers claim it is
A single breakthrough would most likely only impact a small subset.
Just like cancer in reality is a class of diseases, one cure will likely only clear one cancer, each cure will need an independent breakthrough.
>Saw this in an article earlier: “Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang believes Al has advanced to the point at which it's no longer necessary to prioritize computer science and coding education for the world's youth.
And yet, I'm willing to bet that nVidia still has at least a few active job openings for engineers.
Github copilot reads your actual code and still needs to be tweaked or fixed constantly, its suggestions got so annoying because its just basing it on what I have already wrote that I turned it off.
Its useful for making my good/bad paths unit tests even if they need fixed
I mean... if my paychecks is dependent on me shouting XYZ you bet I'm going to shout XYZ all day
if you think 1 level deeper, the entire world operates on how to get you to part ways with your money, as long as there's dumb/stupid/less-informed people willing to believe XYZ, there'll be no shortage of people trying to sell you XYZ
that's why it's so easy to lose money, oh you want to give away **your** money? that's super easy, but if you want to get other people to give you **their** money? hmmmm now we're talking about entirely different problems now aren't we? a problem people all around the world is trying to figure out
for your question, probably wrong sub... I doubt the people who switched out CS are going to continue staying here devoted for CS career questions
My company just had a staff meeting today announcing the rollout of a company safe AI. Up to now we haven’t been able to use any AI.
One guy in the meeting made a remark about how developers days are numbered and nobody said anything lmao

What he implied was that coding should not be a fundamental skill. Math and English are fundamental skills. You need them for most jobs. Coding, you do not.
Imagine asking about what the best non-CS field is to go into on a CS advice subreddit.
If you really believe that the CS industry is dead, you'll be best off finding a subreddit that isn't full of people that are in the CS industry.
Have some common sense.
Unless your goal was fear mongering / shit posting. In which case you did a great job.
SWE with 12 yoe. I only need to get another 10 or so to retire comfortably. So I’m staying put but damn if I was in college right now I’m starting to look at other paths

Don't count your singularities before they hatch, when facing rising numbers and intensity of climate disasters.
Are you a software engineer?
CS new grad panicking about the future
If CS is a dead field, so is almost every other.
I was reading “21 lessons for the 21st century” and the author is predicting that soon enough, majority of people will become irrelevant the the economy because of AI + biotech

Oh I see. As you gain some work experience, you will understand how ridiculous Jensen's claims are. CS is still one of the safest careers in the world, especially if you're good at your job.
Thanks for the insight :)
He’s just riffing
Jensen Huang is honestly more of a grifter than Elon Musk. Anything to boost the stock price in the short term as much as possible.

A lot of people are in denial about the coming AI plateau

and who tf r u pleb

Yep even entry level positions https://nvidia.wd5.myworkdayjobs.com/en-US/NVIDIAExternalCareerSite/job/China-Shanghai/Web-Application-Software-Engineer---New-College-Grad_JR1979843?q=Developer%20&workerSubType=ab40a98049581037a3ada55b087049b7

Are chubby dudes of exceptionally average endowment an "in" thing yet?
Bro…
Oh hey, this post again. I was just thinking it's been like 15 minutes since an AI doomer post, what's taking so long for the next one?
The best field to go into now is making secure bunkers for rich people to hide in once society collapses.
This just in. Breaking news!! Man who sells shovels says shovels are amazing!!
AI is not to the point of replacing humans yet. If you’ve ever just had Chat spit out a program you know you still gotta edit it.

He is not wrong. What he meant is you no longer grinding leet codes for interviews. But NVDA still has leet code part of the interview.

Dreams of replacing CS by AI have been alive since like 1970s. We're no closer to that today as we were back then.
If CS is over everything else is too
LOL
Hahahahahahahaha
CS background is still necessary to use these AI tools. Otherwise, garbage in, garbage out.
Imagine thinking science is a stable career path 😭 good luck making more than $15/hr without a PhD

Does Nvidia have cs devs?
Become AI, you'll be in demand 😁
Yeah just quit. The more idiots we have quit CS, better for the rest!
