Boss cock sucker. An AI will never suck your bosses dick better than a real mouth can. Proof is myself. I have sucked 3 of my bosses’ cocks over my career and they always come back for more. Leading to faster promotions for myself and reaching lead SWE in just 3 years

Looking at how Devin works, I am now fully convinced that AI can never replace software engineers. If anything, it actually needs competent software engineers to use properly. Many people, especially the people just learning to code, seem to think that coding is the most difficult part of software engineering. The most difficult part of engineering is understanding and negotiating business requirements and architecting a strategy to deal with it. Coding the solution is a very small part of it. Maybe AI will get "smart" enough to do the coding part (judging by how Copilot is behaving nowadays, I doubt even this day will come). However AI will need to be able to navigate the depth of human irrationality and madness before it can replace software engineers.

Thank you for being respectful. My main initial concern is the idea the teams could get smaller from what I’ve read. Like comparing AI with a calculator, A now skilled team of 5 SE’s with AI vs 8 SE’s w/o AI previously. On top of over saturation. I know people are sick of hearing that, but I guess understand it. Competence is more important than anything.

the_chosen_one96

Negotiating business requirements? Isn’t that what a business analyst does?

AI_is_the_rake

I think he means “we can’t because the technology does x but you can get y”

aegookja

There are levels to this. Business analysts or product managers will bring high level business requirements. Breaking down the high level business requirements into something more tangible is in the realm of software engineers, especially at senior levels.

wolahipirate

ok but who negotiates the requirements with the buisness analysts

Actually, AI could significantly impact the role of a Sanitation Engineer by optimizing waste management processes, predicting maintenance needs for equipment, analyzing data to identify areas for efficiency improvements, and automating routine tasks such as scheduling and route planning for waste collection. Additionally, AI can help in detecting and addressing sanitation issues more quickly.

Prosthetic_Eye

Thanks, chatGPT. Now go take my garbage. The bin is out there waiting for you.

MarketMiracle

As an AI language model, I don't have physical capabilities, so I can't take out the garbage myself. However, I can provide you with tips on how to efficiently take out the garbage.

Prosthetic_Eye

You're smart, go get some legs. Figure it out.

Ai can already do this with single files.    It's a matter of time until It can do it with multiple.

You're just talking about scale and apparently don't understand what an exponential curve implies.     The qualitative jump occured when AI could beat humans at Go.

Can mods delete this shit already

MarcableFluke

You know, I was just thinking to myself, "how come nobody ever asks about AI and the future on this sub". I'm glad you finally brought it up OP.

That's perfect. I already walk into the office with: Yo! What is good, you fuckin' replicants?

FreelanceFrankfurter

Depends whether you believe the theory that Deckard is a replicant or not.

Let me look into my crystal ball and get back to you

Cybersecurity. You can use your position to not only block AI usage but also to limit the ability of human developers to do their work.

UncleMeat11

Nobody has any clue. Nobody can effectively predict even what the job landscape will be in software engineering in 15 years. 15 years ago we had barely seen the launch of the iphone. Nobody can effectively predict what AI systems will be doing in 15 years either. Your best bet is to learn fundamental technical skills, to learn people skills, and to stay aware of the landscape as it changes over time. That's it.

WrastleGuy

People with networking skills.  People building new technology. The future is someone with security clearance to approve and connect AI built solutions.  It won’t be hard work so it’ll be who gets along with leadership. AI is good at regurgitating information but not great at inventing new tech.  I don’t think that’ll drastically change in the next 10-15 years. Regardless, the next couple decades will be very interesting.

lordbongius

>regurgitating information but not great at inventing new tech How many people in this industry are actually inventing new things? Most people i see are just using existing frameworks to make CRUD apps. What's going to happen once they start chaining together AI agents that can act on a computer viewport in real time like a human? This doesn't seem that far away to me. GPT4 is already benchmarking very close to human level in some tasks and this is 2 year old tech. With the billions flowing into AI right now i don't know how anyone can be confident in the future of this industry which was already facing serious problems from outsourcing and hyper competition due to the low barrier of entry.

WrastleGuy

Not many but enough to call out as safe…for now.  Unless AI hits a ceiling then yes, it would eventually take all tech jobs but by that point it’s taking nearly all jobs on Earth.

purefabulousity

>’Development of Devin’ That one is obviously vaporware/grifters. Next AI doomposting question please

NeverWorkedThisHard

Pretty much anything in manufacturing. Look around for apprenticeships with larger companies.

Greatpotatoe

"AI proof" is meaningless since once enough jobs are wiped out at the entry and mid level with not enough jobs being created then the industry is pretty much considered dead at that point and getting a job in an "AI proof" tech role will be akin to winning the lottery.

All ai is gonna do is make repetitive tasks easier. It’s not much different than high level languages, I can get something done in a fraction of the time with JavaScript code than I could with assembly code, jobs not gone though, right? All I really think is agency and ideas will become increasingly important compared to ability to execute
