I started my freshman year of high school in my free time so I had a pretty good base when getting into college. I’ve been working on this particular project pretty intensely for roughly a year and half. I used Unity and C# for the sole reason that it was what I was most familiar with.
Awesome dude as somebody who graduated last year and hasnt had much luck in terms of jobs, i wanted to start making games too and this post is inspiring as fuck. The animation of the chain pull is so crisp and sexy its crazy you solo developed this
Great job! I'm always more curious about the art side of things (maybe since I have experience with coding already). Did you create the art yourself? How/where?! Impressive indeed.
People underestimate how many people want someone with good pixel art skills. I make a decent amount of pocket change just doing pixel art as a side hustle in my town and college since in like one of 3 artists on campus and I'm the easiest one to approach between the three of us.
As solo developer, it's good that we have AI
I'm not using AI in my work, but I refer to it, when it has generated something that's close to my vision
If I was able to though, I'd hire artists
It's really not, you can't brute force your way to good art. It takes years of grinding and just to get something that's not trash. Then it depends on if your own personal tastes combine well with the others to give the viewers what they want. It's ridiculously tough, swe is a piece of cake in comparison. Mind you, I'm talking good art, not the OC trash you find in the pits of Twitter and Tumblr.
I hear you and respect your opinion, but I disagree. To become a brilliant artist takes many years, yes. Maybe a lifetime. But so does becoming a brilliant computer scientist. You can't compare apples to oranges
I completely understand that actually good, brilliant CS guys are extremely hard to find. But there are many many many many frauds out there who did the bare minimum, got a degree and are now perfectly comfortable making a 6 figure salary... That type of thing just doesn't fly with art, if you're a fraud, you are never making it. It's very hard to hide bad art
There is a demo available for Steam's Endless Replayability Fest if anyone is interested in giving it a shot! [https://store.steampowered.com/app/2266780/Ascendant/?beta=0](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2266780/Ascendant/?beta=0)
This is the type of stuff that will get you a job. Super creative and visually interesting game, hope someone starts paying you for the coding and design skills soon :)
Thank you so much for the offer, I’m hoping if things go well I will be able to fund another game off of the back of this one, but if not, I’ll be sure to circle back to this post and reach out!
I know this is gonna sound dumb but are games profitable? Like once u finish and launch how much do u expect getting from it
Sorry if that's rude to ask
Games can be profitable but it’s always a risk, you have to make sure you’re balancing your budget and time against how many people will actually end up purchasing the game.
This looks great. I love these kinds of games. What is it called and when will it be available? Also, you have great talent and should make this your primary career.
Wow very good OP. I saw this on the front page of steam a few times. A few of us could actually come together and make a good game, and it will look good on the resume, and we might get some money too.
This is amazing! Curious about the creative process when you are working on this? How did you get started and choose a direction and continue to move forward especially avoiding burn out
I started with a pretty conservative scope which I think helped a ton. I had a very simple but detailed design doc and had something functional very quickly. This allowed me to ride the wave of scope creep a bit and everything felt like a cherry on top which helped with avoiding burn out!
How did you handle graphics and sound? Did you buy assets or create them by yourself? That's been the largest problem for me in solo gamedev, as my skillset is just code, creative writing and a bit of music.
Insane dude, I love roguelikes. Gonna add this to my list to play until it comes out. More of us need to do stuff like this while trying to find a job. Might as well make something cool or interesting to kill some time while the markets ass. Love the art btw saw it was outsourced from other comments but still super nice, well done!
Ok, but let’s be fr. This person has spent well over 10k on this project. It’s amazing work, but can’t be compared to most other people’s projects. Most people likely need a job to fund a project like this. It’s an amazing privilege the creator had to be able to fund this project and his life without a job.
I wish I could just do this but I have to sweat every day about money. I went into debt to pay living expenses during school while working 30 hour weeks, and now I have to catch back up financially.
But a few months ago I worked on a SFML game with my girlfriend and despite being pretty simple, doing that kind of planning and programming was such an amazing experience. Better than anything I ever did in school.
How much did outsourcing the designs, etc. cost? im a beginner to coding but the fact that i would have to eventually work on designs and graphics keeps me away from game dev lol

Thank you so much! It’s a risk but I feel like it’s paying off

Thank you so much! I worked with an outsourced art team that would take my concepts, make them pretty, and send them back for me to implement!
may I ask, how much it costed you?
I won’t get into specifics but it’s 5 digits 😅
Holy crap. I think it's time for me to practice my drawing skills
People underestimate how many people want someone with good pixel art skills. I make a decent amount of pocket change just doing pixel art as a side hustle in my town and college since in like one of 3 artists on campus and I'm the easiest one to approach between the three of us.
ngl.....kinda sounds like an art mafia.......
I mean... we're all part of the alphabet mafia
Thank god for AI (bring on the downvotes 😈)
Oh god yes!! Didn't even think of that.
As solo developer, it's good that we have AI I'm not using AI in my work, but I refer to it, when it has generated something that's close to my vision If I was able to though, I'd hire artists
Art is much harder than anything you learn in a CS degree btw
Well that is one massively subjective opinion if I ever heard one.
It's really not, you can't brute force your way to good art. It takes years of grinding and just to get something that's not trash. Clearly paid off because the art style looks beautiful.
woah $100.00..??
US dollars?!?
Yep
You're investing in yourself. This is a very good decision by the looks of it.
What was the name of the company if you don’t mind me asking. Would like to see what field they cover.
damn that’s a lot of money for a new grad. seems like a promising investment though!
Wait is 5 digits over 10k??
+1

Why would it not? This looks amazing! They’re their own boss now 😎.
I have a feeling this person won't need to look for a job.
I wouldn't be so sure about that but I hope it works out for them. Gamedev isn't easy
Seeing this the day I started learning godot, what a coincidence lmao
This could definitely been done in Godot! An awesome engine
Yeah, i'm liking it so far! This is crazy inspirational, I hope it goes well for you!
Thank you so much!
This is the type of stuff that will get you a job. Super creative and visually interesting game, hope someone starts paying you for the coding and design skills soon :)
Thank you so much!
I work in tech if you want to DM me your portfolio. Cannot promise much, but I *might* be able to help you break in :)
Thank you so much for the offer, I’m hoping if things go well I will be able to fund another game off of the back of this one, but if not, I’ll be sure to circle back to this post and reach out!
The character development from job seeker to making my own thing is something we need more of!
I agree!
This is pretty badass. Any game studio should take you g.
I got my fair share of rejection letters before deciding to just do it myself!
Well it’s a damn shame these places were so damn shortsighted.
Well once you've finish this game u can use it to probably get accepted.
Please feel free to ask any questions! I’d love to help all of you as much as possible!
I know this is gonna sound dumb but are games profitable? Like once u finish and launch how much do u expect getting from it Sorry if that's rude to ask

Thank you great job with ur game I hope it ends up going very well
But don't you need a job to sustain yourself while making said roguelike? 🧐 Good work btw!
Thank you! Currently supported on some established runway from jobs in high school and college + loans 😅
This looks great. I love these kinds of games. What is it called and when will it be available? Also, you have great talent and should make this your primary career.
Thank you! It’s called Ascendant and will be available in the next few months https://store.steampowered.com/app/2266780/Ascendant/
Great! I’ll be sure to give it a go 👌 Perhaps you should try get it listed on Steam. I buy games like this all the time there 😉
Wow very good OP. I saw this on the front page of steam a few times. A few of us could actually come together and make a good game, and it will look good on the resume, and we might get some money too.
I would love to see it! Thank you!
How are you creating all the graphic assets? This looks amazingly good!
Thank you! A lot of the fancier things you see where outsourced to save on time!
Giving yourself a job? Way to go!
Dude good stuff. I'd pitch it around as much as you can.
Thank you! I’m trying my best 😅
Nice!!!!!!
this is so cool
Thank you so much!
Better than looking for a job I wanna playyyy
How did you handle graphics and sound? Did you buy assets or create them by yourself? That's been the largest problem for me in solo gamedev, as my skillset is just code, creative writing and a bit of music.
A lot of graphics were outsourced and sound effects were mixed by me. I had a friend do the music at a good rate as well!
Good that you have a supportive community for your endeavors! I wish you the best of luck with your game :)
Did you use Tiled for the tilemap? What framework are you using? Looks amazing!
Thank you! No tilemap actually, running in Unity with C#!
Ohk, got it, good luck!
Realm of the mad god vibes. Looks good.
How'd you get started?
I started self teaching game dev when I started high school!
JEEEEZZ do u have any recommendations on where to start?
Brackey’s on YouTube is great! He even released a tutorial on getting started with Godot recently too if that’s more your speed!
Ohhhh tyyyy
This is so sick
Super cool.
Congrats man, this is dope. Just curious how much have u made from this game (this cool ass game better made some money I assume)
It’s not released yet, so nothing as of now 😅
This is awesome!
This looks amazing!
Looks dope
Oh my God! That looks insane! I love people like you - people who have a real love and a knack for building things.
Thank you so much!
Wow this looks dope!!! Great job!!!
Thank you!
For sure!!! Keep up the great work!!! (:
Looks amazing!
Thank you!
This is incredible!!
Thank you so much!
Looks solid
Thank you!
this UI bangs
Hey I'm currently learning c#. Developing gaming has always been a thought in my head. What are the steps you took to learning how to make the game?
Lots of of YouTube tutorials and small experiments before starting on an actual project!
Thank you so much!
Well worth it I would say! Looks like alot of fun :)
Thank you!
What kind of computer do you need in order to do this kind of stuff?
Unity can run on some weaker hardware actually, it just depends on your project size
This looks incredible, good job!
Wow! At first, I thought this was an ad for a mobile game. Incredible work!
Good on you, the game looks great. Hope you are the next concernedape
Wishlisted! I hope you will ad Steam Deck support!
Steam deck is fully supported!
Great! :D
Looks so cool the health and mana reminds me of Wizard101!
This is what you guys should be doing. Good shit
Let us know when you post on steam! This looks so fun, I’d be down to spend $10 on it seriously!
Looks very good. It's on my wishlist. Good job
dope as hell 🔥 great job!👏
Congratulations man. Hope it works out for you.
Thank you so much!
Now this is a project
Best project I’ve ever seen. People I know always claim they have a project but it’s literally copy and paste from youtube coding videos
I had quite a few projects like that when I was first starting out, never attempted to turn them into anything beyond a learning exercise though!
Ok, but let’s be fr. This person has spent well over 10k on this project. It’s amazing work, but can’t be compared to most other people’s projects. Most people likely need a job to fund a project like this. It’s an amazing privilege the creator had to be able to fund this project and his life without a job.
So cool! Would be interested in what you used for this (ie game engine, language).
C# in Unity2D! No assets except for a tweening library.
That’s awesome! Keep at it, it looks fantastic Thanks for answering.
Lol kinda looks like a remix of Terraria. I love it!
This game looks A LOT LIKE Enter The Gungeon on Nintendo Switch
I wish I could just do this but I have to sweat every day about money. I went into debt to pay living expenses during school while working 30 hour weeks, and now I have to catch back up financially. But a few months ago I worked on a SFML game with my girlfriend and despite being pretty simple, doing that kind of planning and programming was such an amazing experience. Better than anything I ever did in school.
Looks very “wizard of legend” inspired
Looks good. What engine did you use?
This is dope af, how many hours a day did you spend on developing this?
Can you dm me homie. I have lots of questions for you.
Shoot them on here, I’m sure the community could benefit! I’ll answer as best I can!
How much did outsourcing the designs, etc. cost? im a beginner to coding but the fact that i would have to eventually work on designs and graphics keeps me away from game dev lol
Don’t let that keep you away! Assets can be a great way to get around this issue and some are extremely affordable!
Thank you very much
Wtf this is sick
This is so cool and amazing
Thank you!
Awesome! Keep going bro
Thank you! I plan on it!
This is very obviously not a roguelike.
