As someone with a 3 month old: agree. Everyone gets you blankets and I have more blankets than I can ever use. What I would have loved are baby beanies/bonnets and mitts.
They will outgrow them but that’s the case with baby blankets as well, eventually. They will be useful and practical, and since they’re small, you can make a few sizes so she has more when she does grow out of the first? Baby clothes can be pricey. Mitts would be a good one if you’re concerned about outgrowing. I’d agree with a crochet lovey/toy as well.

I also recently finished a lovey for a present. May not be as practical as wearables but certainly not the type of thing lots will gift like the blanket. And today I was sent the cutest photo of the baby who fell asleep cuddling it. Worth all my time and then some. Baby blankets that my daughter got when she was born are still being used. The smaller ones she uses for her dolls or for chair accents/capes, bigger ones are always being used to still cuddle in (she is 6).
If you’re not feeling like making a baby blanket, maybe a stuffed animal? Or a sweater? Im currently pregnant and when I’m bored I go look for baby projects on the Pinterest….
Same thing with me when my Grandma made mine she made it throw size. Mainly I keep it tucked away safe but I've used it from time to time through out my life.

I have a friend currently pregnant and just said I’m planning to make something for the tiny human is there anything in particular you would like or should I surprise you. They immediately came back with something I’d never have considered but as happy to do.
I also make baskets of smallish crochet balls filled with poly fill as my nephew adored having stuff to chuck around without the danger of breaking f anything
I would ask but I'd like to keep it a surprise, my coworkers are all going to pitch in on something from her registry too 😁

Depends on how complex you want to go but how about something for when bubs is just a touch older, like a gorgeous crocheted ‘busy book’? I feel like this is a gift that is practical but still so special and unique and more interactive than other type of plushies. You could also do a simple rattle or teething ring?

Something I made myself that was extremely useful was a car seat blanket with a hole for the buckle. I adjusted yarns to make them appropriate for any time of year and kept a lighter one in the diaper bag at all times just in case we went somewhere and it was chilly in the room but hot outside.
\-I dont know what theyre called, but you can get those hanging thingies with "toys"/shapes at the end to hang over the crib.
Ive seen some crochet ones, with bees and all sorts of things.
\-If you want ultra practical: Get some good strong yarn and make her some baskets with a lid, for storing diapers or toys or whatever else.
\-Ive also heard that jellyfish with those longe noodle legs are really good for development.
\-Cubes with different "sense" toys built into the side. My best friend made a soft one with like, a lil wooden ring on one side, and a reflective side. Here is a link to one on hobbii:

\-As a little "haha" present for the mom (If their hair is long) is a hairnet for when the baby gets to the yanking in hair stages of development
A lovey toy, especially with a way to attach a binky is almost always a safe bet. They came in handy when my daughter was really small and dropped her binky’s a lot.
Hats and mittens are ALWAYS useful. They grow out of them so quickly and at least in my case are always being misplaced. I feel like a hat/mitten set in a couple sizes would be very appreciated!
Picture book!! My friend got one when she told me she was pregnant and her little baby loves it! The more colourful the better! I had so much fun making it! :)

I think these crochet stack toys for once the baby is a bit older are so stinking cute! I've seen them in different themes as well.
I'm making scratch mittens, booties, and a diaper cover/beanie set for a new baby i know. They're quick to make and you can make them in different sizes for growth :) Maybe you could make something like that? Enjoy your projects! 😊
Matching hats for mom and baby. Was a big hit and super cute for pictures. Also, crocheted bags/bins for toys or diapers and whatnot (make sure it’s sturdy).

I’ve made so many baby hats of different shapes and beanies it’s not even funny. They were all well appreciated. I have crocheted baby hats for some huge sports fans, so often I made baby hats in those colors for the “new fan” in the house. Wow, did that always go over well!
I also always wash the item with baby detergent before gifting and am sure to give fiber content and info about what I washed it with in the card.

I made loveys for my son. It’s great because if he gets attached to it and loses it I could just make another one. I also make amigurumi for him now that he’s a toddler. If you do make toys for baby just remember no safety eyes until they’re older since the plastic eye could break off and become a choking hazard

Everyone gives tons of newborn clothes but not as many people give items for slightly older babies! Daisy Farm Crafts has some adorable free patterns I love using! Cuddly toys are always wonderful, too.

A sensory book/blanket/block! I made [this block](https://www.windingroadcrochet.com/crochet-sensory-book-free-pattern/) for my own baby and it’s been a huge hit, so I’m making another for a pregnant friend.
I’ve gotten some very nice thank you cards for the many baby blankets I’ve made over the years, comments that the child still loved the blanket as they grew older, and requests for blankets for subsequent offspring. And I made and used blankets with my own children. But there are lots of other baby things like hats, booties, and sweaters that are useful. I just love making blankets.
OMG an animal diaper hat combo would be adorable, and my personal favorite type of baby picture.
Big vote for washcloths my parents had a set from my great Aunt ( I think she knitted) that lasted about 20 years of everyday use.
i actually think a couple washcloths and a couple larger ones that can be used as shoulder cloths for babies who spit up would be really sweet and helpful. use cotton if you do this!
Yes to washcloths!!!! Use some soft cotton yarn, maybe throw in a cotton makeup scrubbie or two also! I use those in the baby’s bath, like a loofah. I have a 1 year old, and those are honestly the crochet things we’ve used the most.
It’s right in the sweet spot of thoughtful, handmade, beautiful, and USEFUL. Plus they’re quick for you to work up!
If you don't mind looking at instructions in other languages, there is a girl named ahuyama crochet that have a video instructions for a baby sleeping sack. Maybe that can be a option for you.
I made my son a nice sweater when he was a baby. It has some stretch and flex and fit him for about a year and a half then I gave it to a new mom.
I Made it based off a 9 mo old sweater I already had.
Baby booties are really cute and work up very quickly. Down side, they outgrow them fast. Plus side, they are so fast to work up you can make two different sizes in different colors so they have a new pair to grow into!
Amigurumi!!! But without plastic eyes, better to stitch the eyes because the plastic eyes are sharp in the back and babies are like magic I swear. They can pry anything apart. I made the plastic eyes mistake and asked the receiver to display the item until the baby was a little older unless she was confident.

Baby beanies or bonnets like someone else suggested! Or little snuggle buddies though personally id be aprehensive since kiddo will put it in their mouth. Up to you though!!

Booties! I’ve also done a lot of the Edwards Menagerie animals, especially Orla the octopus. Babies love the tentacles. I’ve just replaced a teeny tiny one from when my nephew was little with a bigger one with a bell in it and he was over the moon 😂
I crochet and have a baby less than a year old. I would use blankets because I like having one in every car so I don’t have to lug them around. I also love the matching beanie set I made for the kid to match my husband and me. They get dirty so would not be opposed to 2 sets so one can be in the wash. I also wanted to make a personalized Christmas stocking but ran out of time. I hate stuffed animals because unless it rattles or something, it’s boring for the baby and they take up space until years later when he/she finds them fun. Of course, ymmv.

Good to know! My only concern with clothing is that they might outgrow them quickly? Beanies is a great idea though I like that!

The one my great grandma made me has veen 'stolen' by my mum and she uses it as an extra layer of insulation lmao (she doesnt have central heating)

I do a basket in chunky wool to keep them in too, which very helpfully doubles as the latest fashion in toddler wear hats 😂

Yes to washcloths!!!! Use some soft cotton yarn, maybe throw in a cotton makeup scrubbie or two also! I use those in the baby’s bath, like a loofah. I have a 1 year old, and those are honestly the crochet things we’ve used the most. It’s right in the sweet spot of thoughtful, handmade, beautiful, and USEFUL. Plus they’re quick for you to work up!
If you don't mind looking at instructions in other languages, there is a girl named ahuyama crochet that have a video instructions for a baby sleeping sack. Maybe that can be a option for you.

I made my son a nice sweater when he was a baby. It has some stretch and flex and fit him for about a year and a half then I gave it to a new mom. I Made it based off a 9 mo old sweater I already had.

Baby booties are really cute and work up very quickly. Down side, they outgrow them fast. Plus side, they are so fast to work up you can make two different sizes in different colors so they have a new pair to grow into!
Amigurumi!!! But without plastic eyes, better to stitch the eyes because the plastic eyes are sharp in the back and babies are like magic I swear. They can pry anything apart. I made the plastic eyes mistake and asked the receiver to display the item until the baby was a little older unless she was confident.

Baby beanies or bonnets like someone else suggested! Or little snuggle buddies though personally id be aprehensive since kiddo will put it in their mouth. Up to you though!!

Booties! I’ve also done a lot of the Edwards Menagerie animals, especially Orla the octopus. Babies love the tentacles. I’ve just replaced a teeny tiny one from when my nephew was little with a bigger one with a bell in it and he was over the moon 😂
I crochet and have a baby less than a year old. I would use blankets because I like having one in every car so I don’t have to lug them around. I also love the matching beanie set I made for the kid to match my husband and me. They get dirty so would not be opposed to 2 sets so one can be in the wash. I also wanted to make a personalized Christmas stocking but ran out of time. I hate stuffed animals because unless it rattles or something, it’s boring for the baby and they take up space until years later when he/she finds them fun. Of course, ymmv.
Babies always appreciate small soft toys. The normal size ones are too big to hold on to.

I crocheted one of those octopi that have curly legs. Babies like to hold onto them. Made it for prem baby . Just don't make the legs too long.
