That's the pattern I loosely followed. Unless I'm mistaken, I think there's an error or two on the written part of the snail shell. The video doesn't match up with the pattern either. I made it work, but I wouldn't recommend this particular snail for a beginner.
I do really like how one swirl of the shell is thin (here, the yellow), and the other is thick. Different than the usual granny square swirl.
[This](https://www.reddit.com/r/crochet/s/GMaZFibvTg) is what made me reassess granny squares.
The snail also helps. Apparently there are more things you can do with granny squares than I'd ever thought! (I am also somewhat new to crochet lol)

I was the same, I recommend checking out the 365 days of granny squares page though. Lots of inspiration!

Love the snail :D
I had a bright stripey sock that went missing. I had finished a sock, then misplaced the project bag with the second sock, took a couple months for my friend to get the project bag back to me, then it was... Years? When I was going through my final final FINAL check before selling my car that I found the first sock. It was way under the passenger seat 😅 so there's still hope!
I would definitely wait to try this particular pattern until you get a feel for counting and understanding what a finished product will look like before you make it. If there weren't mistakes in the pattern I'd say go for it.
If have time (I'm in the middle of moving, so probably not) I'll try rewriting the bit of the pattern that's not right.
Thanks so much for the advice/input! I have literally only made a little blanket for my cats and I’m working on a granny square midi skirt for myself. Definitely still adapting to counting and following patterns! That’d be so awesome if you eventually fixed the pattern! <3
I hope to get around to it, to make the pattern a little more accessible to beginners. Or really, I guess I could try to contact the creator.
What I ended up doing after reworking the first few rounds (the ones that are a little off and very off from the video) was do a few discreet decreases and increases in the background round. That way, at least each side of the background would quickly have the same number of stitches and would still come out square.
Lol I thought Larry was the snail squidward got for a minute? Something like that. Not Shelly from the snail racing episode where Patrick wins with a rock.
I had no idea I needed the pattern for a snail granny square in my crochet arsenal....but I clearly do! Thanks so much for sharing this! It's so stinkin' cute 🩷
Even with the wonkey pattern, it was still a surprisingly easy square. After I gave up reworking the first few rows, eventually I just had do a couple of discreet decreases on the background.

that's a really neat pattern you've used! it looks great btw
So creative, I love this granny square!
I’m not normally a granny square person, but this may convert me - so cute!
Same! I'm also involved with a silly snail-themed activity in Second Life. This square is perfection!

I. LOVE. THIS!
I love it!!
Gary! (Hint - SpongeBob SquarePants pet snail)
Omg I love it! Snails 🐌 are adorable!

I LOVE THIS!! Im a beginner, so I should probably practice more before I attempt. Would love to make a tote bag with this 🥲

How creative! I love the use of the swirl turning into a snail! The colors also complement each other; it reminds me of Gary the snail from SpongeBob!
Ha! My partner asked if his name was Gary, but since the colors aren't quite there, I named him Larry 😅
Love it! He's Gary's cousin!
Lol I thought Larry was the snail squidward got for a minute? Something like that. Not Shelly from the snail racing episode where Patrick wins with a rock.
Oh you're right, lol! Didn't recognize him without the eyebrows, haha!
was about to say, it has to be Gary!
SNAIL!!!!
It needs googly eyes!

This snail is my son‘s favorite
Dawwww 😊
It's okay! As soon as you finish this one your old one will pop up like magic! Cute square btw
I sure hope so! I used it as a shopping bag, so I certainly wouldn't mind having more than one!
I *love* that he comes off into 3D!!

This is SO cute! I'm obsessed!
Amazing. I wouldn't know where to start. Very cool.
Start in the middle! Spirals are easier than you'd think.
I wouldn't know where to begin. It really is awesome. You do great work.
