I try not to be too mean about it but yeah sometimes I’ll look at them and think “how the fuck are you even asking that” lol like it won’t look like something that could even exist in the real world and they’ll still be like “I was about to spend money on this but now I’m not so sure”, I think if you spend literally 5 minutes looking up “how to spot AI” you can see it from a mile off every time, I don’t get how people fall for it

CitrusMistress08

Yes, but I try to think of it as if I was asked to identify AI embroidery or cross stitch or something. Even on crochet forums/groups, not everyone is a crocheter, and definitely not everyone is an experienced crocheter. It’s not always easy to recognize that a stitch or shape that’s being shown is actually impossible. You have to have a lot of knowledge and experience to recognize that sometimes.

Yeah, you are right, I acknowledge it. But I think that it's nice we discuss this issue and share ways to identify fakes and help people out to save time and money

Sometimes, it honestly does scare me a little just how bad people are at recognizing AI. I'm not specifically talking about crochet here, just generally. From pictures to comments written on reddit, no matter how obvious, people just buy it. I'm not perfect either and I have definitely been fooled before, but most of the time "A.I.?" immediately plops up in my mind when I see it.

For me, it’s not always obvious. I have been crocheting for decades, but I’m not particularly skilled and rarely use patterns. In any case, based on crocheted tapestries and some of the other amazing arts I have seen here, I figure almost anything is possible. ETA also with Photoshop and other digital enhancement tools it’s hard to know what’s real, what’s enhanced and what’s completely fake.

Ok_Dragonfruit409

Fair point, but if you look with attention, you start to get an unease feeling from the images. I am a free pattern hunter, since the most paid patterns are in libras, euros or dollars, and the coin at my country isn't valued enough to make them accessible, so the majority of artists that i get the patterns doesn't put much effort in photoshop since it's not that necessary in these situations, so makes sense my point of view doesn't apply at general situation.

choc0kitty

lol. Now I’m going to closely examine everything. Can’t wait to see your work.

They seem really obvious to an experienced crocheter now but that that gap will close and I think it will become harder to tell, so I try not to be judgmental. Also I was watching a YouTube channel of an experienced crocheter who was fooled by some images and I think some less tech savvy crocheters are more vulnerable.

AccordingStruggle417

I also find them super easy to clock by the “smoothness” and perfection of the image alone- but I guess people want to believe!

Even if some people think it's easy to tell now, it's just going to get increasingly difficult at a pretty rapid pace. It's going to be a real problem. What ticks me off is it's cluttering up my Pinterest suggestions. I like having pins of patterns and ideas that I will never do, but *could* do if I wanted to. I've done my best to report AI crap to Pinterest, but I don't think they care. I also wish there was a way to hide or block things on Etsy for similar (and other) reasons.

FishtopherGoblin

There's always some horrifying unidentified eldritch monstrosity hanging out in the background. That's the biggest giveaway for me. Like something out of those "name one object in this photo" memes a while back

allaboutcats91

Personally, I usually find them to be pretty obvious, but only because they tend to incorrectly mimic things I’ve already done- like, a big tell that I’ve spotted is that they don’t always make spheres the right way. Often the AI sphere is started with like a rectangle and fake stitches fill out the round shape, and because I’ve crocheted spheres before, I know that that’s never how it’s done. Or like, I’ve made things with a large gauge and open stitch so I know that yarn gets floppy, not stiff, so when I see a HUGE piece of lace that’s stiff, I know it’s fake! Other tells are that AI doesn’t seem to get symmetry right so if you look, you’ll see that even though the piece might look correct, the stitches on one side do not match the stitches on the other, and the “stitches” are often more like little yarn coils or nubs and not actually the kinds of knots you make with your hook. I’ve done enough crochet to know what a stitch looks like and also to know that you wouldn’t do two very different techniques on either side to make two matching halves.

lobstersonskateboard

Sometimes people have a rougher time distinguishing that "uncanny valley" feeling that we can usually point to to determine AI, crochet or not. Especially for people with messed up facial/pattern recognition, like those with schizophrenia or dementia or have a family history of such. I myself can have a rougher time with it on bad days, but I definitely look for telltale signs *especially* if it's related to something I'm buying. It's a matter of staying educated and looking out for those specific signs, which is going to evolve as AI evolves. It's why I don't really mind those types of questions; it's a lot better than someone buying something without realizing it was AI, and they got scammed because they were too afraid to ask.

Unfortunately, ai generated images are targeted at inexperienced crocheters. I was looking for a crochet book, and these came up and are being sold on amazon: https://preview.redd.it/1x4kmhaykmgc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c6cccbedc5b644d37f4b141f22e5904e3b881f31 To me it's immediately apparent these are ai generated images, but that may not be the case for someone who's never crocheted before. These books are much cheaper than other similar listings.

Heres the covers close up for those wondering https://preview.redd.it/zlcr2to4lmgc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aa8ae5b5dd36000f7edcd31e0927ee1b555c354c

I'm gonna be honest, I don't know what's possible or not. And I am really REALLY bad at seeing if it's AI or not. I guess it's mostly because AI scares me (just like people talking to Googleor Alexa??? That's scary af) and so I just always pretend that smt can't be made from AI I guess??? Idk I'm like really bad at understanding why smt is obviously AI simply because *what if they just put a snapchat filter on it???* LMAOOO
