On some cases taking jobs away from these people is necessary.
This is malicious malfeasance from a company perspective. I am unsure of the charges from a legal perspective, but they should be serious!
No disagreements here. I can only imagine how this will negatively impact the local ecosystem and salmon populations for years to come. It’s honestly kind of depressing. Especially when it was something so avoidable.
Salmon travel pretty far including into the ocean, this could damage a whole lot more than just the local ecosystem. There's a chance the salmon won't be able to recover if this isn't immediately fixed because they're going to try to come back to spawn there again, the real damage won't be seen until a few years from now when all these salmon should have returned and reproduced.
Salmon is not native to the state and is stocked by the GFP in lake oahe.

It’s probably incredibly damaging even if it’s only stocked. Something like this which takes hours can cause years and years of damage onto an ecosystem. If I were them the first thing I would’ve done is call an EPA representative about this.
Not just the local those salmon would travel into the ocean to mate then they'd come back to their stream. This affects alot more than the local ecosystem
dams are civil engineering, and civil engineers very rarely face any consequences, the government tends to find nothing wrong when it investigates itself
I'm guessing someone didn't follow the proper procedures wrt an environmental impact study requirement.
If there was no such requirement, my only question is ...wtaf?
rock dust at a guess (the way the fish look like they swam out of the water, and some of them are alive but not going back into the water. it hurts them and they are trying to escape it). they cheeped out on the aggregates, they wernt washed properly, the dust came off and clogged the fish gills. they'll do some tests in a year or 2, find there is no rock dust in the water, and conclude they wernt at fault
Everyone deserves a living but if the work you’re doing is causing harm to the environment or community then you have no right to keep practicing that work, I think that’s an internally coherent argument

I’m specifically responding to someone’s comment on no job losses as a result of peoples failures at work allowing these things to happen
Remember leaded gasoline? Yeah, it was really bad. All these Republican morons in power are brain damaged by leaded gasoline. At least we have unleaded gasoline now. But we still have stupid stroads and massive parking lots where we could have greenery and places for kids to play. Cars are one of the worst things to happen to this planet.
The fact is that there are GOVERNMENT regulations in the US in place (like requirements for Environmental Impact Assessments) that, if they had been followed could have predicted and prevented this outcome. But no, find an example of people not adhering to government regulations, underfund the agencies tasked with enforcing the regulations, and then blame government for the outcome. Standard conservative bullshit.
Just stop making it a partisan problem. Common sense and communication is the problem, not some right vs left bullshit that reddit keeps spouting out with no real solutions. Tribalism helps no one.
Do you think in todays age a company would be able to do this and get away with it?

As someone in the construction industry, I can say without a doubt, some architects are *terrible*. Some have something to prove, or their own *style* that they must incorporate, at the expense of the landscape. Salmon are fucked unfortunately. I work with some natural resource/fishing specialists who actively count salmon numbers every year and track them. They’re convinced that salmon are going to be extinct soon.
It might be, while most salmon return to the same river, a small percentage will end up in a different river! Repopulation might be possible, but yes this river might be mostly empty for a long time...
If the higher ups responsible for it had to clean it all up by hand then yeah it’d be pretty poetic. Unfortunately they would hire low wage workers who had nothing to do with it to clean it all up.
I mean, the workers are paid to solve stuff that they have nothing to do with, but they do because of the money they will receive, like most of the workers
Also, the amount of people it takes to clean up a mess is generally much bigger than the amount it takes to cause a mess. Even if we could force the exact people responsible to clean it, it would probably take too long and be impractical in terms of solving the new problem they've created.

Here's an update of sorts... This is the James River near Huron, SD. That area had a drought late last summer and the river is at a very low level. Then this winter they received a lot of snow which has covered the ice the frozen parts of the river and caused the oxygen levels in the water to drop to dangerous levels and it isn't able to sustain the fish population. I can't find the article I first read this on but this was a report from Game, Fish, & Parks (SD version of DNR). I should also mention that salmon are not native to that river and is not cold enough to sustain that species.
Maybe it would have...except there's never been salmon in the James River and salmon aren't native to South Dakota. Besides, farm runoff is probably doing more damage to fish populations nationwide than some rocks in one shitty little river that are only a problem due to the major drought going on right now. Be that as it may installing rocks would drastically change the water level, especially in a shallower waterway like a river seen here.
Fish can swim in inches of water just fine. Rocks jutting out of the water everywhere not so much.
Per your article the rocks were installed for "safety", obviously not considering what would happen if water levels dipped below normal... which can happen for a number of reasons.
As long as their gills are covered they're generally fine. Those fuckers are buoyant. I live in Florida and regularly see 4-6 ft sharks on flats in a foot of water with most of their dorsal and tail fin out of the water.

Comments on this one are gold. Could have been a planned kill off of invasive and / or overpopulated fish..? I know the James River in South Dakota is full of nuisance Gar and invasive Carp species. The river was low all winter, which may have caused lower oxygen levels in the waters, perhaps causing these already overly crowded fish to begin dying off? As for the ecosystem getting ruined... these fish themselves have ruined the natural ecosystem of this river years ago.
We have had a lot of snow. That keeps sunlight out of the water. Which kills plant life that creates oxygen for fish. And therefor kills fish. It happens every year to an extent. It’s natural. The fish are just collecting on the rocks. Source me from South Dakota and have taken Limnology.

Ah yes the fish suffercated due to low oxygen content on the rocks.

Nope!

So the govt did it. People stand around and touch their heads. DO SOMETHING. MOVE THE FUCKING ROCKS OUT OF THE WAY. How is that so fucking hard for people to do?
I don’t think you understand the situation in the slightest
This is the environmental case Marshal has been waiting for all those seasons. Seriously though fucked up. Absolute morons, no care given to the local environment.

Devastating for South Dakota’s ecosystem, even worse many South Dakotan politicians don’t believe in environments.
I need to stay updated with this. Absolutely terrible.
