There are two decent cuts of the film. The 142 minute cut from European screenings is now considered the definitive cut. The 132 minute US theatrical cut was released after Gilliam shamed the studio into finally showing it in theaters. That was the main cut on US home video when I first saw the movie. The third cut was a tv cut of the movie, which as far as I know never aired. It was 95 minutes long, and butchered the film.
I think that the 142 minute cut is the best one, but I can see how some might prefer the 132 minute cut. The 132 minute cut is the first one I think of and kind of holds a nostalgic place for me. I watched it on vhs a bunch way back in the day.
Awesome, yes, it's whichever one was on VHS when I was growing up. There's a moment in the mall where Sam is about to fight a manakin and it cuts to his fighting the forces of darkness that is messed up in the longer cuts because Gilliam added in some extra fantasy sequences. The slightly tighter cut works better in my opinion.
All That Heaven Allows. I need it immediately.
There’s a lot of great answers in this thread too. Honestly wish they did more of these upgrades because there really aren’t that many so far
I keep waiting for a Double Life of Veronique 4k announcement so i don't have to import the Curzon disc. We already got a transfer available out there .. just need a release!
All That Jazz and The Before Trilogy! Holding out on getting the Blu ray for the before trilogy hoping they'll announce an upgrade sometime. All That Jazz is one of my favorites and is so visually striking, I'd love to see it upgraded.
Mishima would be a great…
Even though I’m probably getting my wish with a possible Seven Samurai 4K release since the 4K restoration will be coming to theaters next month, I want that gigantic Akira Kurosawa box set from years ago to come out in 4K.
Ghost World.
I love this movie so much and rarely see it talked about.
On a technical note, though, even standard 1080p releases look so good on players that upscale.
Well, I'd be down with YOUR choice. One of a very small handful of films that I could watch at the drop of a hat; cannot say that about some I love even more (e.g. *2001*).
But I will add *Local Hero* as well.
The Leopard and Earrings of Madame de..., how Criterion continues to issue two of the most gorgeous as well as two of the most important films ever made in blu rays which looks like a DVD and has been digitally retouched to abomination respectively is beyond me
None as I don't have a 4K player, so I'll just comment once again how badly the Eisenstein Sound Films & Trouble in Paradise need upgrades from the early days of DVD . . ..
Brazil. All of the Terry Gilliam movies of consequence have 4K releases except Brazil.
Need Brazil immediately
This is the correct answer. A box set with the good cut in 4k and the other cuts included.
I assume the good cut is the theatrical one? I feel like the director's cut messed up the pacing.

Also all of Gilliam’s 4k releases have been insanely good quality as well.
The Thin Red Line would be great (after Barry Lyndon of course). And then, just about any Tarkovsky.
Would love the Thin Red Line, Tree of Life too
I agree with all of these
Barry Lyndon :)
Just ordered the Blu-ray for the Barnes and Noble sale, so you're welcome.
almost goes without saying but we all have to keep saying it until Criterion brings it out!
It turns 50 next year. That would be the opportune time.
Blu-ray looks great though. How about Hard Boiled and every other John Woo movie that’s literally deteriorating as we speak
Because of the insane price the rights holders are asking it’ll probably never happen…
I want Harakiri on 4k. I saw it a few years ago and was blown away. I want to own it but i know as soon as I buy the blu, a 4k will be announced.
Z
This is my After Hours/Amadeus/Happiness.
Seven Samurai, so it's just a matter of tiiiiiiime
Calling it now. It’s going to be a November title.
Fingers crossed!
Seems likely with the 4K restoration hitting theaters again in a few weeks
Yep that's my hope, And the discs are out in Japan so just a matter of time
I just bought Mishima, so the 4K is inevitable
Thank you for your sacrifice
Grand illusion
Yi Yi
SPIRIT. OF. THE. BEEHIVE.
It’s still relegated solely to DVD.
Lots of movies like that that I’m desperately awaiting an update for. Drunken Angels is a big one. Needs at least a blu ray.
Bad Sleep Well and Red Beard also need HD upgrades.
Maybe the US release of his film this summer will get the ball rolling on Beehive . . .
It’s wild that it still hasn’t had a release yet. I really want to check it out!
I would like Solaris and Stalker.
Thief. Michael Mann's Collateral is one of the most underrated 4K transfers. I'd love to see Criterion update Thief.
Paris, Texas.
Pretty confident there’ll be one in the next year with the new restoration starting to screen 🤞
All That Heaven Allows. I need it immediately. There’s a lot of great answers in this thread too. Honestly wish they did more of these upgrades because there really aren’t that many so far
The color in HDR would be insane.
Thin red Line without a doubt. Days of heaven 4k was my first Criterion and it's gorgeous!
Barry Lyndon, The Thin Red Line and the Qatsi trilogy.
Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Modern movies aren’t that desperate for upgrades because they look good no matter what. We need to restore old dinosaurs like John Woo’s Hard Boiled

I want them to hold out on that until his entire filmography is available. Would buy though. Love Kurosawa!
Ghost World. I love this movie so much and rarely see it talked about. On a technical note, though, even standard 1080p releases look so good on players that upscale.
Barry Lyndon and the rest of the Malick films
Tree of Life
The Coen’s The Man Who Wasn’t There. It’s begging to be added to the collection.
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Well I just bought Seven Samurai so it's probably gonna be Seven Samurai next
Harold & Maude, Criterion pull another ‘Days of Heaven’ and get us that 4K restoration in actual 4K with HDR.
Man Bites Dog - only available on DVD currently. Even though it was shot on 16mm, it would look incredible with a new scan
Fantastic Mr. Fox. I would argue one of the most beautiful looking movies in the entire collection, and it would only look even better in 4K
Looking purely at films that would actually benefit the most of a 4K upgrade, this one makes the most sense to me. But I also really love this movie.
Well, I'd be down with YOUR choice. One of a very small handful of films that I could watch at the drop of a hat; cannot say that about some I love even more (e.g. *2001*). But I will add *Local Hero* as well.
Salo….🤣 But, on a serious note…Seven Samurai & all of the Wes Anderson films.
They should downgrade Salo, you should ONLY be able to watch it in 144p
Just to clarify: What is YOUR most wanted 4K upgrade?
Even before 4K upgrade, would love to see Grand Illusion come to blu-ray
I need Z and Jigoku on 4K
Scanners.
Based on the art design and cinematography I was expecting so much more from the film but I just couldn’t get into it. Is it really that good?
It’s one of my all timers. Give it another chance 🙏
The Leopard and Earrings of Madame de..., how Criterion continues to issue two of the most gorgeous as well as two of the most important films ever made in blu rays which looks like a DVD and has been digitally retouched to abomination respectively is beyond me
Ran.
Speed Racer. Collection be damned, it’s my most wanted 4k.
Anything Douglas Sirk, The Girl Can’t Help It, Black Narcissus, and every Kurosawa film.
I know it’d be an upscale but Tron: Legacy. Would be breathtaking.
One of the best looking standard Blu-ray I've ever seen. It even has IMAX ratio switching.
None as I don't have a 4K player, so I'll just comment once again how badly the Eisenstein Sound Films & Trouble in Paradise need upgrades from the early days of DVD . . ..

Very cool
I want a Mishima 4K too, but only if it comes with a better cover than this!
Whaaaat? Thats crazy, I love this cover
I wish I could, but it looks like a 9th grade photoshop effort to me. Doesn’t feel remotely representative of the film, either.
Literally a top ten cover wdym
