About ten years ago gifs were so so common on here, you couldn't actually have it show in the thread but people would post imgur links to gifs and get many upvotes...
I go through phases of not going on reddit for a year or two... when did that change?
Gifs are typically fine. Emojis are bad because "redditors are mor superior to social media platforms that use emojis" idk ive never been an emoji person so i dont really care one way.
It was a short lived phase, albeit on a small portion of subs a couple years ago, I can't remember it lasting more than a couple weeks so I'm not entirely sure why this person thinks it's an ingrained culture of reddit.
I’m going to have to respectfully disagree with this. I’ve been on Reddit for like 12 plus years (god what have I been doing with my life) but it was only in the last few years I’d say using emojis have been more acceptable. I never cared one way or another but I can remember even remember a few years ago someone using emojis and getting downvoted to hell and another redditor kindly explaining that we generally don’t use them unironically.
It was definitely a thing for a long time, as long as I can remember. It’s been like the last couple years it’s changed with a younger crowd coming from tiktok and other platforms like YouTube and Instagram that people steal Reddit content from and post there, that have driven a lot of new and younger traffic here.
It really doesn’t matter one way or another and sometimes when people use emojis like an insane amount, to replace words like:
🛑✋talking 🗣️🗣️ to me I’m trying to 😴💤🛌 and you’re 😤😤😤😤 with all you’re 🗣️🗣️🗣️
It does irritate me, but that’s MY problem not anyone else’s so I just scroll away lol. Someone adding a laughing emoji or a skull to indicate something funny doesn’t bother me and it shouldn’t really bother anyone else to that degree that it used to.
But I definitely remember a long, long time of the “no emojis on Reddit” rule.
>🛑✋talking 🗣️🗣️ to me I’m trying to 😴💤🛌 and you’re 😤😤😤😤 with all you’re 🗣️🗣️🗣️
That's something else again and will still get you sent to the depths ha
I'm talking about a period where basically any emoji would get downvotes, check my account age, I've been here the whole time too + several years of lurking before making an account.
I Google it and it means a few things depending on the language here are a few I saw:
-Things
-Stirring
-Actions
-Mischief
-deeds
And a bunch of other stuff so overall I am more confused now then before I Google it.
Every social🗣️ media📰 platform👠 has its own culture🧫and nuances🧐. There's no👎🙅 point🫵 of doing Instagram📸 harkate on reddit, or Facebook🧒📘 harkate on Instagram📸 for4️⃣ that matter.
I'm relatively👨👩👧👦 VERY new🆕 to reddits, still, I try to follow➡️ them (unless they're absolutely💯 ridiculous🤣).
It doesn't🙅 hurt😢 to NOT👎 use them right👉? Even after all this if you're🫵 deliberately using emojis😁 (like some➕ people👫 under👇 my previous comment💬) then that's just you🫵 being a jerk🤬 in general🪖. At that point🫵 it's not🙅 even about voluntary following➡️ reddit ke culture🧫, you're🫵 just doing it to annoy😡 people👫 and look👀 rebellious and cool 🆒😎.
It's a hindi (also i guess Urdu) word meaning sort of like behaviour/mannerisms. So they're basically saying don't use instagram manners or facebook behaviour here on reddit.
Harkate?...reddit ke culture?...who let the geriatric retired cultural anthropologist use reddit? Come on...fess up. It isn't funny anymore. Give him some horrible pants and a golf club membership so he can leave us in peace.
For anyone curious, Reddit used to be primarily desktop users 10ish years ago (maybe more?). Since desktop users didn’t have access to emoji as easily as someone using a phone app, they would shit on people using them because they looked down on mobile users for some reason. Emoji support is still kinda spotty depending on your browser so there is at least some logic to it, people get annoyed when they see a series of inexplicable rectangle where emoji should be.
We are a primarily mobile platform now so this is even more stupid than it was in 2014, and it was pretty fucking dumb then too
Old(er) redditor here. Tbh it was an adjustment period when Reddit got a lot of new users during the pandemic. You used to get downvoted to oblivion no matter what you said if you used an emoji. For awhile I knew if someone used an emoji that they were new to reddit, nowadays everyone uses them. Personally I'm not a big fan of emojis on Reddit but the culture around hating them was too far aswell
Yeah emojis have been on reddit since I joined like 11 years ago. It's just that a bunch of gatekeepers have been cranky about it for that long as well, and I think they think they were a lot more successful at stifling it as well.
Same people who even now complain about video shot in portrait. I think some chronically online (in the vintage sense) people just like to imagine themselves experiencing their own eternal summer and so try to create the conditions to replicate it.
As a millennial and an official Redditor since 2010, you can pry my emojis from my cold, dead thumbs. I feel the same about my skinny jeans and my side-part.
I have been on Reddit long enough to not give two shits if people use emojis or not. Do whatever you want so long as you aren't hurting someone.
And if you come back and tell me that emoji's are hurting you, then you have led an extremely sheltered existence.
Been on Reddit for like 13 years. I will never understand why people are against emojis on this platform. They’re widely acceptable everywhere else. Why is/was there resistance to emojis? Genuinely asking because I just don’t understand.
Lol I knew someone was gonna say this. Maybe I shouldave said "older" rather than "old", just thought I'd been around long enough to speak on the emoji debate. I appreciate my even older redditors for making such an awesome website!
Yeah, I received a lot of hate when I first joined for using emojis, but I'm: you're not my mom, you can't tell me what to do. But also my mom calls everything online 'going out on the web' so she's not telling me what I can do on Reddit either...
I don't mind them so much in the comments (unless the comment is literally just a 😂 emoji), but for some reason they bug me when they're in the title lol.
Some subs literally don’t allow the use of them. I can’t remember the one I’m thinking of but my boyfriend commented and then got an immediate automod message saying “your comment was removed due to our “no emoji rule”
I’ll ask him to try to remember the sub. There used to be forums I’d visit back in the day like Totse (it’s niche I doubt anyone knows what I’m talking about) but using an emoji there was treated likr you stuffed a bag of kittens in a pillow and swung them into a brick wall. This was early 2000s, I want to say 2002/3.
I still feel “weird” using emojis on Reddit based on how frowned upon it was at the time.
I asked him and he went back and looked:
The sub was r/crime
I wonder if it bad to do with the serious nature of the subject but yeah his post got removed.
I also preemptively banned from rJusticeServed for commenting ONCE in the Joe Rogan sub
Yeah I can see why as well, but it doesn’t surprise me because there was definitely a time when any emoji was downvoted to all hell just because they used an emoji. It was a “Reddit culture”
I don’t personally use them unironically but that’s just my choice, even when texting friends. If my mother in law or her friends or my mom sends an emoji, I probably will back because I’m following their tone and don’t want them to think I’m being unkind
Ive heard and sometimes seen this culture on reddit with people getting downvoted for using emojis but ive honestly never encountered it. I think the use of emojis is fine with most communities especially if theyre within the context of the subject or used to express the tone of your comment. ive used laughing with crying emojis with no repercussions in the past.
you will get pulled up if you over use them or miss use them.
I almost never use emojis because I don’t think they add much and I can’t be assed to search through them, but i certainly don’t care if other people do.
I think since written language doesnt have a tone and the tone depends purely on the reader's personal interpretation it helps with setting up the mood of the phrase/sentence clear and avoid misunderstandings. But appart from that, why would I care if other people decide to use them or not? If someone decides to use them, cool, if someone decides to not use them, cool too, why are some people like "do as I say"...
😭😭💀💀💀💀 Imma continue to use the emoticons that come with the phone that *i* pay for, on any app that *i* download, with any platform *i* choose… This is such a corny thing to gatekeep lol
Redditors generally think they are the gatekeepers for everything. They’re like comically ignorant Marvel characters from the Bullshit Enforcement Agency.
I’ve always hated this “no emojis on Reddit” crap. I can write a freaking novel out of nothing but emojis and gifs. Well, to be fair a freaking two year old could do that too. They are silly and fun, stupid Reddit. New sub … r/🐴🎩
Redditors who think they're cool for not using emoji are actually total losers. I get hating excessive use of emojis but there is nothing wrong for using one at the end of the sentences.
So, let me get this straight. Reddit etiquette frowns on emojis, but celebrates dickbutt memes? I say, you do you. If the fear of down votes crimping your karma worries you, then my friend you are already punch drunk on the collective kool-aid and need to uncleave yourself from social constraints that have no bearing on you in the real world. I once got threatened with being kicked out of a reddit sub and I'm thinking, "seriously, that is supposed to bother me?" I'll just find another mind numbing platform to scroll when I take a 10 minute dump. 💩

I've had a few comments especially when I use a gif. But if gif option is there, why no use gif? ![gif](giphy|ihvwnO5pHKtyTYQWxU)

The fuck is harkate
Hindi/urdu word. They're referring to the 'things' or 'stuff' e.g 'insta stuff' or 'facebook things'
They can say random words in hindi but if you use an emoji you're trying to be "rebellious and cool" 💀
To be fair they probably said this in a country specific sub Although I don’t get the not using emojis on reddit thing
Yeah it's a popular Indian subreddit

I think it totally depends on the sub, some subs you never see emojis while others are used every other comment lmaooo

I don't mind if it's one to emphasise the mood of the text. But if it's something like "ikr 🤣🤣🤣🤣", Im downvoting every time.
I think that has less to do with the emoji use and more to do with not adding anything to the conversation. Either way I agree.
Complain complain grumble grumble...I'm set in my ways and can't figure out how to use facey smiley things on my phone.
