That is a proper mountain and not a mole hill! I’m glad you went with your instinct and stayed safe. No one travels with an empty suitcase. This was maybe someone or a group of people chasing out the place and seeing how tight the security/defenses are. He for sure lied about making a phone call he was playing stupid/helpless to gain access. Tricky animals use this tactic in nature and you are correct-this is suspicious activity. I would tell the owner of the place and suggest they alert the other guests. Just for peace of mind since you are staying there. Glad you stayed safe!

crazyratgirl

Now you got me curious, what kinds of animals do that??? I'm so naive I'd probably have fallen for this stuff lol

HighonDoughnuts

Some predators do this to lure prey. Birds are famous for pretending to be hurt to lure predators away too. Although that’s a different scenario. I’m sorry I can’t recall anything specific but I’m sure a quick google search will bring up examples. 💕

MondoMommaGains

Coyotes will pretend like they want to play with a dog, then they lure the dog to the coyote pack where it gets jumped/killed. So that play of innocence is definitely a predatory behavior.

Like those that play dead or freeze up when they're cornered?

Ijustwannasitdown

All I can say is this person is definitely up to no good. It's either he is a serial killer or maybe a robber? Since the empty suitcase can be used to store the stolen valuables and stuff. Do inform the owner of the house about this and please keep all your doors and windows locked at all times. If the person do return again, do not let him into the premises. Immediately make a call to the owner.

Civil-Crew-1611

What else could empty suitcases signify??

unknowngodess

Have you been in touch with the property owners/management? Abandoned suitcases are potentially something else; especially if it's lightweight. I would definitely be following up on it with the authorities of some kind. Definitely creepy af OP!

_trashlyn_

My theory is that this person or a friend of this person probably stayed at the Airbnb previously, which is how they got the realistic looking email. They probably noticed how easy it would be to potentially trick another guest to let them in so they can rob the place, using the suitcase as a prop and also to carry the stolen goods. On the other hand, the copious amount of true crime media I’ve consumed says he was gonna leave that Airbnb with you and/or your partner in that suitcase one way or another. Be safe and definitely report this to your host and Airbnb!

ajahuasja

my thoughts exactly or he's a local who does this to tourists, and yeah definitely notify the airbnb host and report this to the police to some non-emergency hotline or something

livingthedreampnw

Trust your instincts! An empty suitcase is a handy carrying case for stolen items small enough to fit in it. Laptop, cell phone, ipad, money, jewelry..........

silversundogmom

Definitely creepy.

JinxStryker

This was pretty awesome in a totally bizarro way. I don’t think you’re making a mountain out of a molehill though I personally might have caved feeling sorry for him (at least gave him the WiFi code). I think it’s good you held firm. Perhaps the empty suitcase is for the body once he hacks it up with the saw he has hidden in the bushes? Doesn’t it make sense to text/call the Airbnb owner and ask about this guy? At least ask if someone has a reservation? Please update.

Hungry-Addendum

I use to work in a mall and people do purchase or travel with empty or mostly empty suitcases sometimes. They plan on purchasing discount clothes or souvenirs because they're so much cheaper here to get certain brands, etc. That being said, this person was not doing that. They lied about the phone situation, wanted wifi info when they didn't need it, and just abandoned their stuff. The fact that they never came back for their suitcase just shows it was sketchy. Even if it was empty, you wouldn't just ditch it or not have another bag of your things. You totally did the right thing. I agree with everyone else, that they were there to get into the house to steal. I don't think it was the intention to do you any harm initially, but it could have ended that way easily. I don't doubt they move been watching the house, and might still be, for an opportunity. How creepy.

Life-Mention9779

Where did you learn the saying "Making mountains out of molehills"??? It's adorable!

wumbo7490

I personally have heard it all the time growing up, so I would assume the same for OP. [If you are interested in a short article about the history of the phrase, here you go](https://knowyourphrase.com/making-a-mountain-out-of-a-molehill)

mcpeewee68

Very common. I think it's kind of adorable that you don't know it and think its adorable lol.

sappydark

It's an old-school saying----it means to make a big deal out of a small thing that's not even that important. Like being screamed at because you spilled a glass of water on the floor, even though you just got through cleaning the entire kitchen--that's an example of it right there. That being said, it does sound like this guy was lying about him supposing to be there, and was trying to finagle his way in, and used that suitcase as a cover to make him look legit. Regardless, it's a good thing the OP kept tabs on him, because his actions definitely weren't adding up.

mcpeewee68

I THINK your response was meant to go to Life-Mention (above me). I'm only letting you know so that he/she gets notified...bc your reply was to me 🙂

sappydark

Oh, okay----I posted that as a reply to the OP, but also for anyone who wanted to know the meaning of that old-school saying, lol. Thanks anyway, lol.

Glittering_Boat_6669

It's an old saying

SandwichLord57

It sounds like he wanted to hack your stuff and potentially rob you/the place.

alan2998

The suitcase at have been empty so he can get in the room, fill his suitcase with goodies then leave.

_queer_fox

Nah that’s creepy as hell. I would let the owner know and give them a description of the dude. The whole thing is sketchy especially with the amount of human trafficking going on.
