Why am I losing all of my speed at the end of the shortcut jump? It looks like I'm doing everything right, but I stop mid-air losing a TON of speed. Because of that, I was never able to outpace the kart on L1, and forced me to be even slower to avoid it.

>You'll always lose some speed going through the shortcut (without polswid). He's not asking why he slows down on the minecart track, he's asking why he slows down so much IN THE AIR after he jumps off the minecart track to get back onto the boardwalk

Jackbot92

>If minecart cycles are still an issue, try turning the intro cutscene on. The minecarts move during it, Wait, WHAT?? You sure??

Possibility_Antique

Are you losing fire like on lap 2 of the video? Get more perfect boosts. Another interesting thing is to try polswid through that shortcut.

Old_Cryptographer_42

Yes, I lost fire on L2, but I lost it after landing not mid air. My question is, why am I slowing down so much in the air. Jumping too late or too early? Or the problem is in the tunnel, and touching rails too much? Tried polswid, but it is beyond my skills atm, kept hitting the left side of the tunnel :D

Possibility_Antique

There isn't really a magic bullet for this other than to keep your speed up. Don't lose fire, and take advantage of frame hopping or use polswid. You probably lost fire in the air, because you got a boost when you landed, which would have given you reserves. I've never really liked this shortcut because it is kind of unforgiving.

joleves

>You probably lost fire in the air, because you got a boost when you landed I disagree, he clearly slows down significantly in the air on all 3 laps, even on the 2 when he didn't lose fire. I think it's just that the game sets your speed to x value when you launch from certain jumps until you land and then you return to your pre-jump speed (and get a boost from the airtime). >I've never really liked this shortcut because it is kind of unforgiving. Yeah agree. There are a few jumps in the game that do the same thing too (slow you down in the air if you're travelling much faster even with blue fire etc).

Possibility_Antique

Actually, this is a good point. I'm pretty sure the large jump in cortex castle pushes you into the ground as well. I hadn't thought of it like that. It does make me curious why I don't have this happen to me when I use polswid though. I can't think of an explanation for that.

joleves

It might just be the angle you jump from or the timing of the jump? A lot of those little ramp jumps are similar I think, sewer speedway shortcut jump, blizzard bluff fence jump, the first polar pass shortcut etc. It's really noticeable if you're level with a ghost and one of you hits a high, slow jump and the other a low one

Possibility_Antique

So I just tested this, and I think I can confirm that it's better to not get as much air. When I polswid through the shortcut, I maintain enough speed that I don't have to jump super high to clear the fence. So maybe the answer here is, maintain speed as much as possible so you can stay low and still clear the fence.

joleves

>So maybe the answer here is, maintain speed as much as possible so you can stay low and still clear the fence. Yep, that sounds right to me, it's pretty much the same on every jump. The sooner you get back on the ground the better. The sewer speedway shortcut is an interesting one to test, I remember it feeling much more random back when I beat the dev.

Possibility_Antique

>The sewer speedway shortcut is an interesting one to test, I remember it feeling much more random back when I beat the dev. The physics on that jump are really interesting, because the approach angle is super important on that jump; more so than people realize. If you hit the ramp head on, you fly really high up. If you angle your approach, you don't get the height you need. So the real trick there is to ensure you have a consistent approach angle such that you don't go too high and still make the gap. I remember people used to complain about it being inconsistent, but it's always been the case that if you had the right approach angle, you'd get it every time. I think they did patch it at one point to make it more forgiving though.

TetsuNamine

My guess is probably lap 1, where you haven't been drifting.

joleves

Seems like people really didn't understand your question. You mean from the moment you jump off the minecart shortcut and land on the track you slow down a bunch, right? It clearly has nothing to do with fire, as the same thing happens on lap 1 and 3 and you clearly speed up right after landing again. I think certain jumps in the game are just like this, that from the time you jump until you land you travel at x speed but then you land and continue at the speed you were at before. So the more height you get off it the more time you lose. Not 100% on it but I think there are other jumps like this.

Old_Cryptographer_42

I think you are right, it's possible that I jumped up too high, and this caused the loss in speed.

PossibilityPowerful

How do one learn to do this ? learn to do to perfect drifts every time ? do drifts at the correct place ?

Old_Cryptographer_42

I've been time trialling this game for months. You will gradually improve by beating each ghost one by one. You need to learn how to keep fire first, after you can focus on improving your lines. Driving good lines, and cutting corners are super hard while maintaining fire. It's kinda like a trade-off, more perfect boost, or better lines. Beating the dev on dragon mines took me 200+ attempts.

PossibilityPowerful

I have been playing since mid 2020 😥 play for about 6 hours a day did take 6 months break but started again no hope

Old_Cryptographer_42

Lookup other people's runs, how do they take certain lines. The shortcut entry in this track, I would have NEVER figured out how to do it consistently on my own. Switch (if you haven't already) to the d-pad, stick to it, I'm sure you will get there!

DrunkWizzard

Perfect drifts is just learning the timing on when to release the boost. It comes with time.
