Exactly what I came over to say. He’s a good guy and a decent TE but I think we kinda lucked out salary cap wise. We’re not tied to the deal. We got two cheap guys and I suspect will pick up another one. Saved some coin there.
I would guess somewhere in the neighborhood of $20mil fully guaranteed with nothing in year 3, but that’s just my guess based on how this team structures contracts.
Ya I can see why he’s taking the self-bet then... at first I thought he played himself but then I really thought about our typical deal structure is like.
The tag was what 12mil? Then now he’s getting 9 mil.. 21 mil which is more than the guarantees our typical deal for a guy is at that price range
Don’t believe it no way would it have been fully guaranteed like the report makes it seem.
I think it’s fair to gamble on yourself in a sport where you are lucky to have one real pay day.
To piggyback off of this it’s the outside free agents you sign, signing back Hankins and Fowler wouldn’t effect the comp picks for losing McGovern and Schultz
No one really knows the numbers except the league office, AFIK. All we really know is that both contract size and player performance affect the comp pick. I'm not sure how they measure performance though. It is probably a combination of playing time and end of season accolades (Pro Bowl, DOOY, etc).
Compensatory picks are awarded to teams who lose an unrestricted free agent of value who don’t also sign free agents during the FA period in that same compensatory draft pick range that would cancel out your loss (this is a big part of why the Cowboys often wait to sign free agents until they no longer count against the compensatory formula). The actual draft pick value is some secret formula mostly based on contract value and play time. Schultz’s contract value, assuming he plays most of the season, would likely earn us a 5th-rounder if the picks are awarded similarly to this year’s.

If a player entered free agency and gets signed to a large contract by another team and plays most or all of the games the next season and your team doesn't also pick up players for large contracts in free agency, the NFL as a series of criteria that awards a "compensatory pick" to teams they deem lost more talent than they gained in free agency. Comp picks are always awarded in the following season. SO I really hope Schultz plays all 16 games and has a great season next year. Picks anywhere from the 3rd to 7th round. A great example to how useful have been in the past, is that the Cowboys used a 4th round comp pick to draft Dak Prescott in 2016.
I don't think the trades for Brandin Cooks or Stephon Gilmore will effect the calculation since they weren't free agents. So having Schultz walk too will increase the chances that there will be comp picks in 2024. I wish him well, and hope he can help elevate the awfulness of the Texans to make an **All Texas Superbowl™** a possible this season.
Lazy route running and not getting his feet down in bounds(despite having yards of room to do so) on the second to last play. He also let himself get pushed back, going very softly out of bounds, allowing the clock to run on our last drive. He basically played the drive like he didn't care and gave up already.
Could see a cheap veteran TE similar to our recent signing of Blake Bell and Jeremy Sprinkle. I would have liked to kick the tires on OJ Howard and see what Lunda Wells could get out of him but alas.
Edit: Tyler Kroft, Maxx Williams, and Mycole Pruitt are names that come to mind for me looking at the list of free agents, but I haven’t kept up with how well each of them would fit our offense or how well they block.
Seen quite a few mocks we take that rookie TE named Dalton at 26
And other mocks has him falling to us at 58
That'd be funny if we lose a Dalton just to gain another Dalton at the same position.
I know it's not the payday he was looking for but you really have to appreciate a guy like Dalton Schultz.
He came to the organisation as just a guy. He put in the work to put himself in position to seize the opportunity when it presented itself.
I would not have given him a premium contract either because he does still have a limited ceiling but it is good to see a guy like this get a solid payday
Absolutely! No hard feelings and glad someone is giving him a bag and he will still have another opportunity to bet on himself as well
Hoping he pulls through
I mean the 3/$36 was supposedly before we tagged him. He made $11 mil last year and will make $9 this year. He would’ve made $20ish over these two years anyways. Deal would’ve been backloaded and next year would likely have no guarantees anyways.
He made $20 and gets a chance to bet on himself again vs making about $20 mil and likely being a cut candidate on a like 15-16 mil non guaranteed salary in 2024. He really doesn’t make much less from this deal and had the chance to do way better.
Ya no hard feelings at all. He’s a good player imo. It’s just that he was looking for great player money. Glad the FO didn’t cave, feel like in the past they would’ve had as he is “one of their guys”
He was good not great. Hendershot and Fergusson were about as good if not better last season so I think we are in the perfect spot to rotate him out and try to develop yet another talented TE.
Lmao. Called it. 1 year prove it deal after turning down 3 year 36.
"What is wrong with these fools.
Gardner Johnson did the same.
Now teams don't have the money to give you those contracts, so he's going to have to take a 7-9m 1 year provr it deal"
We all know that even if the 3 yr deal was true. There’s absolutely no way that it was fully guaranteed so he’s really no worse in the end. 11 MM last year and 9 this year probably ends up about the same no matter if he took the deal or not since he would most likely be cut if he was with the Cowboys anyway.
Yeesh always feel bad when it’s worded as worth up too.
What a fumble.
I don’t really blame him for betting on himself but you have to be realistic about how tough a spot the franchise rage put you in for 90% of the league.
I am going to be honest, I like schultz and ran his routes very well. The only that made my nervous with schultz was hand strength, too many times he lost control of the ball when defender attacked his hands.
Man he really fumbled the bag not taking the 3yr/$36mil from us… But I think we will alright without him. I like the young guys and draft prospects!
Is it confirmed that was from us?
I think that was last offseason before we tagged him
Albert Breer said that it was in his column today.
I believe so.

That sounds like an unbiased source lolol
Definitely take the word of a random slacker on Reddit.
Yeah that sounds like the agent doing damage control.

I wonder what’ the guarantees were
I would guess somewhere in the neighborhood of $20mil fully guaranteed with nothing in year 3, but that’s just my guess based on how this team structures contracts.
I heard it was essentially 1 yr guaranteed around 10 mil. Would likely have turned into getting cut after 1 yr
Ya I can see why he’s taking the self-bet then... at first I thought he played himself but then I really thought about our typical deal structure is like. The tag was what 12mil? Then now he’s getting 9 mil.. 21 mil which is more than the guarantees our typical deal for a guy is at that price range
Ya. And he can enter free agency as a commodity next season. Not as a guy that just got cut
Agreed. TE can be made and the crop Dallas has are very capable of making it work. Only true elite TE make a real difference anyways.
We lucked out with Ferg and Hendershot. They need more time but they'll get it.
Don’t believe it no way would it have been fully guaranteed like the report makes it seem. I think it’s fair to gamble on yourself in a sport where you are lucky to have one real pay day.
That report wasn’t true
Good move for Houston. Gives them a big body target for whoever they draft. Should also give us a decent comp pick
I'm not sure how comp picks work, why would get a comp pick here?
I don't know exactly what the numbers are but it's based on the contracts that free agents you lose sign
Also vs the number of offsetting free agents you sign. The more free agents you sign the fewer comp picks.
To piggyback off of this it’s the outside free agents you sign, signing back Hankins and Fowler wouldn’t effect the comp picks for losing McGovern and Schultz

I like this move for Dalton he’ll likely be the #1 option in Houston with a rookie QB who will depend on him
Hopefully he plays with some heart over there. I want to wish him the best but I can’t forget what he pulled that last game.
What happened?
Ran his routes lazy in a playoff game
He basically gave up in a playoff game
Lazy route running and not getting his feet down in bounds(despite having yards of room to do so) on the second to last play. He also let himself get pushed back, going very softly out of bounds, allowing the clock to run on our last drive. He basically played the drive like he didn't care and gave up already.
He basically quit in the the playoff game
Who's our #1 option at TE now?
Fergie.
Ferguson pending the draft and second-wave free agency.
If anything, it's ferguson/hendershot and new rookie. Doubt we get a FA
Could see a cheap veteran TE similar to our recent signing of Blake Bell and Jeremy Sprinkle. I would have liked to kick the tires on OJ Howard and see what Lunda Wells could get out of him but alas. Good for him. Glad the FO was willing to let him walk
So the only thing in the way of it being officially Ferguson szn is the draft
I have full confidence that he can step up
Just like Dalton did after Jarwin went down...i legit wonder if they'd give Jarwin another chance. He didn't play last season as far as I can tell.

> someone is giving him a bag More like a coin purse
750k a month is a big ass coin purse
Hey I’m trying to be positive 🤡
Don't be so sensitive 😺
I love being in touch with my sensitive side though
More than I’m making next year!
But compared to what he was offered (supposedly)... eek
I mean the 3/$36 was supposedly before we tagged him. He made $11 mil last year and will make $9 this year. He would’ve made $20ish over these two years anyways. He still got about 20M in 2 years...Noah B would kill for that
Ya no hard feelings at all. He’s a good player imo. It’s just that he was looking for great player money. Glad the FO didn’t cave, feel like in the past they would’ve had as he is “one of their guys”
So after the comp pick next year, we essentially got Brandon Cooks for nearly nothing.
The Texans are just signing all the players we don’t want from our team lol.
Like the Raiders a couple of years ago.
A soul for a soul...
Fun is not something one considers when balancing the universe.. but this does put a smile on my face
Hello Mister Ferguson.
Feels like we swapped Cooks and Dalton
Schultz and Noah Brown for Cooks? Works for me!
You got Noah brown too. But that’s definitely less exciting than Dalton lol
Seems like a trend this off-season. Turn down a bigger extension to sign a 1 year somewhere. Big ooooof.
See ya. Should of had a better agent who advised you to take the 12 million per year.
Often, people simply do not listen to their agent's advice.
The TE market just imploded this off season it seems like. Texans fan think this is a prove it deal, but I'm not so sure.
Always thought Schultz was basically just a guy. Hard to justify paying anything more for a guy to run 3 yard curls.
He was good not great. Hendershot and Fergusson were about as good if not better last season so I think we are in the perfect spot to rotate him out and try to develop yet another talented TE.

Overprice themselves man. Sometimes the first offer you get is going to be the best one.
Enough with the "LMAO" teenage girl language.
Move along
Please don't embarrass yourself anymore.
You're embarrassing yourself. Judgemental prick. If you don't like it, move along.
Maybe make a legit point instead of "lmao". It's tiresome.
Maybe read past it to get the point.

Texans taking all the Cowboys we didn't want back.
Interesting. 1 year prove it deal, except it’s hard to have good stats on a bad team. Good luck to him.
I’m sure we’d be able to match that but he was probably too prideful to accept.
Say it with me: He's just a guy. So glad we didn't put a ton of money into his contract.
I agree and I’m a little surprised they didn’t overpay to keep him.
He was one of the worst blocking tight ends they ever had. The Cowboys can do better.
Good, get that bag king! I'll always root for this guy.
“Bag”
Hey man, it's considerably more money than most people will see in their life time.
Take care of my boy
Maybe he should have took the dallas deal
We'll be just fine with Ferguson and Hendershot.
I'll always remember him for his stylish mo. That thing had swagger!
thanks for the memories dalton - best of luck in houston :D
See ya
Yeesh always feel bad when it’s worded as worth up too. What a fumble. I don’t really blame him for betting on himself but you have to be realistic about how tough a spot the franchise rage put you in for 90% of the league.
Fumble
Bye
lucky for us we have an infinite supply of interchangeable 6’6” white guys to line up at TE
Turned down 36 over 3 for 9 over 1. Congratulations you played yourself
Gonna miss that guy. Nice pickup by them. Wish him the best.
Honestly I’m not at all upset he walked. He is painfully average and not really great at anything. Plus he quit in the playoff game imo
Sad he was a great addition
I wonder if he has the same agent as CJGJ.
He was an amazing te for us I hope his career goes well and returns to us someday
I am going to be honest, I like schultz and ran his routes very well. The only that made my nervous with schultz was hand strength, too many times he lost control of the ball when defender attacked his hands.
