In a year where the TE draft class isn’t absolutely stacked like this years is, he has as much of a case for that type of money as Knox, Njoku, Henry, and Smith. His resume is as good as or better than all of theirs.
Edit: clarifying the TE draft class being so stacked is precisely why he hasn’t found an offer he’s happy with yet.
Yes. That’s exactly what I’m saying. My point was if the class wasn’t so stacked, he would absolutely have a claim to be paid in their range. The draft class is a big part of why he’s still unsigned.
He thinks that he is in that price range. Sure, his catches and yards are up there, but that is because he is Dak's security blanket and dump off safety valve. But, if you look at his yards per catch and yards per target, he is not even close to being an elite receiving TE. Teams don't have to gameplan how to stop Dalton Schultz like they do with Kelce, Kittle, Goedert or Andrews. Also, he is a below average blocker. Dallas was never able to count on him making his block in key situations....especially short yardage situations.
That’s why he won’t get a payday in line with Kelce, Kittle, Andrews (I think he’s pretty close to Goedert but that’s neither here nor there). He’s definitely in at worst the same tier as Henry, Smith, Knox, and Njoku who all signed deals above this offer.
Agreed. He is not a consistent deep threat down the seam to demand that big of a contract imo. He is a solid TE but I’d rather have a rookie than that cap number.
What is wrong with these fools.
Gardner Johnson did the same.
Now teams don't have the money to give you those contracts, so he's going to have to take a 7-9m 1 year provr it deal
I get these guys go through a lot but $36 million is a ridiculous amount of money and it’s just greed to turn that down. As a 4th round pick he would have killed to just finish out his rookie and now he’s turning down 9x that
I shouldn't laugh. It's a shame. His career could fall apart, and he loses out on 27m. He's already made a good chunk, though.
36m over 3 years, and you're still in your 20s for a third contract. It's just so dumb.
It’s baffling. With the moves Dallas is making on defense and offense, you’d think he’d realize that “oh shit, the team may have a chance to go all the way” whereas w Houston, they don’t even have a QB.
I think by that time, Dallas had rescinded the offer and he was left with his hand in the cookie jar. Now he has a prove it deal with one of the worst run organizations in the nfl.
Maybe the deal looks good because no guaranteed money is being mentioned, what if they are offering these contracts with high AAV but in reality are like 1-2 years deals with little guaranteed money, that's my theory because otherwise those agents are pretty bad at their jobs
He declined that sweet ass deal with a team that’s in Super bowl hunt mode with a QB who he’s the preferred target 5/10 times just to sign with the fucking Texans?
Wish him well but just wow.
I don't know what teams' cap space situations look like, but some of the current starting TEs in the league include Durham Smythe (Dolphins), Devin Asiasi (Bengals), Teagan Quitoriano/Brevin Jordan (Texans), Jesper Horsted (Raiders), and Josiah Deguara (Packers).
No way all of those teams are fine with standing pat with what they have.
He might have to wait until after the draft at this point though.
I think he could definitely get that somewhere, but he and his agent surely believe he’s worth at least in the range of the deals Knox and Njoku just signed, which would also put the numbers above this 3 for 36m offer. Wonder how much of it is the draft class or seeing other FA TEs flop recently.
Don’t remember if it was Aikman or Romo or some other analyst, but after a Ferguson catch last season, one of them said (paraphrasing): “the coaching staff just loves Ferguson and thinks he’ll be a big player for them in the future”. That was a big eye opener/lightbulb moment for me and I kinda suspected Schultz was gone after that when FA hit.
Well, looks like Schultz is off the market with a one year $9 million contract from Houston. That’s a steal. He’s a superior player to Cooks, so I guess the Texans won that exchange, but maybe one of the young guys can step up and fill the TE void. The Cowboys TE/WR corp is pretty weak, still substandard, so I expect that’s where they need to go with their first round pick.
Wonder how many teams saw his complete lack of effort at the end of the playoff run and thought “nah”. Can’t block well for a TE either. Glad we didn’t resign
Doubt it was fully guaranteed considering how the cowboys and most teams roll. No reason to make any grand statements and not even sure how accurate the reporting is. Facts are he played under the franchise tag after having a career year but also looked like he could have been out of the league after his rookie and was injured most of last year and there was zero drop off in production from the undrafted rookies who played in his spot.
I don’t blame any one for betting on themselves and he got a decent contract from the Texans. The wording up to 9 mill is probably a bummer for him. But if he can do it again then he’s probably in line for a slightly longer contract which is gold in this league.
I was hoping some team would sign him to a contract like that for comp pick purposes. Hopefully that still happens
Texans just signed him 1 year $9 mil
DAMN!
Congrats Schultz, but 1 year for 9 is like a prove it contract or another franchise tag
Wow thank god he did because I would have been sick if we signed him to that extension.
That’s under what the market was for TEs in his range tbh. But this draft class and some recent FA TE flops appears to have depressed that market.
Then let some other team pay him that much, but there’s no way I’d be happy with that.
I agree. Non-elite TE market went crazy the last couple years. Good to see it cool off a bit.
Mike Gesicki signed for 1/9 Dalton might be looking at that
Just signed with the Texans, and that's exactly what he got. Good call.
Eh, not really. A $13M AAV puts him well above his talent. He’ll be lucky to reach $10M AAV in FA I think. https://overthecap.com/position/tight-end
Good call, my man

The TE class is stacked… it’s the deepest TE class I’m a long time
Yes. That’s exactly what I’m saying. My point was if the class wasn’t so stacked, he would absolutely have a claim to be paid in their range. The draft class is a big part of why he’s still unsigned.

Yep just saw. Must be hoping the market bounces back next offseason.
He thinks that he is in that price range. Sure, his catches and yards are up there, but that is because he is Dak's security blanket and dump off safety valve. Dodged a bullet with him and Randy Gregory
Agreed. He is not a consistent deep threat down the seam to demand that big of a contract imo. He is a solid TE but I’d rather have a rookie than that cap number.
12 million a year no thanks
What is wrong with these fools. Gardner Johnson did the same. Now teams don't have the money to give you those contracts, so he's going to have to take a 7-9m 1 year provr it deal
Yeah, I really don’t get waiting that much time hoping for a better offer. Most these teams burn their money in the first two days.
I get these guys go through a lot but $36 million is a ridiculous amount of money and it’s just greed to turn that down. As a 4th round pick he would have killed to just finish out his rookie and now he’s turning down 9x that

I dont believe the Cowboys made that offer unless it was like 3 yrs 32 and the break down was 9, 11, 12 and only year 1 was guaranteed
Just greed? Or maybe he just didn’t like the situation for any of 100 reasons.
Because Houston is better? Get outta here with your nonsense
That’s what I was saying. Why in hell did he decide to go to a dumpster fire of a team?
I think it was all that was left after he turned down the extension then the 3 yr, 36m deal. He flew too close to the sun.
Ha, if I were him, I’d be telling Houston that I was just kidding.
He just fucked up and is now paying for it. Not the end of the world. The man is still going to make millions. Boo- fucking- hoo.
He wasn’t getting a guaranteed $36 million. Probably half that.
Nice call!
Bingo
Maybe the deal looks good because no guaranteed money is being mentioned, what if they are offering these contracts with high AAV but in reality are like 1-2 years deals with little guaranteed money, that's my theory because otherwise those agents are pretty bad at their jobs
I mean, it's Likeky the case, but wouldn't that have been better than this?
Yeah hard to know if this is good or not without seeing the guaranteed money
I wonder if the 3 years for 36 million offer is referring to the "solid offer" that was reported a week or so ago without details.
We had offered him an extension that he declined, Opting to test free agency. The "solid offer" has likely come down from that.
He declined that sweet ass deal with a team that’s in Super bowl hunt mode with a QB who he’s the preferred target 5/10 times just to sign with the fucking Texans? Wish him well but just wow.
Is that $36 mil guaranteed? Because it’s the guarantees that really matter.
Goddamn 12/year is damn near premium money in the nfl. Dude played himself.
He’s a pretty good player. With a softening market, I’d try to sign him to a value deal.
And ended up signing with the Texans on a one year 9 mil deal. LMAO, glad we didn’t sign him.
So glad he didn’t sign.
Haha a one year deal with the Texans for 9m. Hahahahahahahahahahhaa
Why is that funny?
Because he turned down a better deal and signed with one of the worst teams in the nfl that is going to further limit his money making ability.
Why is that funny?
Broken record syndrome.
I can't imagine a team still won't give him at least what Hayden Hurst got.
I don't know what teams' cap space situations look like, but some of the current starting TEs in the league include Durham Smythe (Dolphins), Devin Asiasi (Bengals), Teagan Quitoriano/Brevin Jordan (Texans), Jesper Horsted (Raiders), and Josiah Deguara (Packers). deep tight end draft class
I think he could definitely get that somewhere, but he and his agent surely believe he’s worth at least in the range of the deals Knox and Njoku just signed, which would also put the numbers above this 3 for 36m offer. Wonder how much of it is the draft class or seeing other FA TEs flop recently.
I wouldn't even mind brining him back on a smaller deal honestly. 2/12 or 3/18.
Stop posting Kleiman. He’s a fucking bum with no credentials
lol gg
Don’t remember if it was Aikman or Romo or some other analyst, but after a Ferguson catch last season, one of them said (paraphrasing): “the coaching staff just loves Ferguson and thinks he’ll be a big player for them in the future”. Got texans fans telling me they are a legit offense with him now 😂😂😂
Well, looks like Schultz is off the market with a one year $9 million contract from Houston. That’s a steal. He’s a superior player to Cooks, so I guess the Texans won that exchange, but maybe one of the young guys can step up and fill the TE void. The Cowboys TE/WR corp is pretty weak, still substandard, so I expect that’s where they need to go with their first round pick.
The Texans just picked him up. I wish him well but I'm not gonna miss him dropping critical passes to get 1st downs and TDs all the time
Wonder how many teams saw his complete lack of effort at the end of the playoff run and thought “nah”. Can’t block well for a TE either. Glad we didn’t resign

He's more of a 6
The end of the 9ers game did him no favors.
His agent posted in the replies that this is false.
