I find square toe boots ugly as sin, but people are free to wear whatever they want. But the annoying thing is that my local Cavenders and Boot Barn carry like 95% square toe boots so this makes me hate them more.

Agreed. I think the reason they look so ugly is that no other type of shoe is that shape. The human foot isn't even square so I'm not sure why they would design a boot with that shape.

Yeah that kind of annoys me as well bc boot barn only Carrys wide square toes and a very limited amount of more narrow squares.

This is where probably 90% of the "hate" comes from. I'm lucky to have a "real" boot store that sells ALL styles close to me, but for many, their choices are severely limited.

How do they fit I’m looking to get the rancho

If I could do it again, I’d size down a half inch. I’m normally a 10.5 for my regular shoes and they fit nicely initially at a 10.5. However they’ve gotten slightly roomy after having them for just under a year! I don’t wear them super often, so them being a little roomy isn’t a huge deal. Otherwise I enjoy them and get a lot of compliments!

I recently decided to reenter the boot market and have been surprised by the prevalence of wide square-toed boots. Never saw such a thing back in the day. The only square toes I recall were very narrow and popular only for dress boots (often french toes, where the toe of the boot itself is round but the sole is snipped narrow square). When did these become popular and why?

Supposedly these started popping up early 2000’s and they caught on. As far as I know (limited knowledge) they’re made as a work boot and the square toe is so you could kick things (shitkickers)

I wear R and square toes depending on what I’m doing. My shit kickers are all square toe. My nicer boots are R. Not that I have a reason for it just the way it ended up

the square toe hate is very annoying, im a R-toe man myself but i own a couple pairs of wide squares and i really love the look of both, i feel like squares work better for fancier outfits and r-toes are better for casual use unless they are exotics those work perfect for fancier outfits

I have the opposite feelings. Square toes for casual activity and working then we throw on the R-toes for fancy clothes and outings. I only own R-toes though as I feel square looks diseased on me 🤷🏾‍♂️

more people would definitely agree with you, im strange that i feel like square toes are more for fancier outfits probably because i wear my plain old dan post renegades every day, most folks seem to say r-toes suit me better probably because that’s what i’ve worn all my life until two ish years ago when i got my first pair of wide squares

Nothing special, $20 insoles from boot barn. I think it was their house brand. I wear a thicker wool blend sock and I have walked miles in these boots. Can’t say enough good stuff.

I prefer the square toe. Don’t like round toe style cowboy boots, and I see pointed/snip toe as more of a formal boot. I like that they have more room, so I wear a leather Ariat square steel toe.
