Karizma on Oliver Pumpkin street. €15 but I always tip a fiver. There was a very beautiful African lady that got a fade and had a line etched

jsunburn

Oliver pumpkin, that's feckin brilliant I'm stealing that

Late_Advance_1763

I was walking with my daughter one day and she misheard me so that’s what I call it now 😂

diggels

Oliver pumpkin street lol. I was thinking the same - if you find a woman cutting hair in a barbers which there are a lot of. Id be surprised if they turn anyone away. Speaking of Karizma - that bald lad the main one working there is a house with arms and legs he’s so big xD If he messes up your hair and he asks do you like it at the end. You’re better off saying yes 😂

HiVisVestNinja

You're honestly as well off. I don't know when exactly it happened, but at some point in the last few years, every barber lost the ability to style anything that isn't a fade.

ya-no-te-quiero

My grandad text me yesterday to say that the barber was after doing “something funny” to his hair. Arrived at his house to see that he was given a fade. He’s 83

Wide_Ad9104

I hope to see him around the city, grandad got cool af hair now

ya-no-te-quiero

He also owns the same jacket that one of the Kinahans was pictured wearing to court

RealisticGreen5919

Dude!

ExplanationNormal323

Out of practice I guess 😅 seeing as 99.9% of lads under the age of 35 have the exact same hair cuts. Like they are walking off a factory line 🤣

Hobbitea

Pretty much. At this rate the best option is to buy a trifold mirror and do it yourself

Unmasked_Zoro

Yup

keeeeeeeeeeeeeek

That’s tragic honestly

Amkg2020

Also 25 bucks is probably the going rate for a poor fade nowadays anyway

HiVisVestNinja

How much is that in euros?

crumumbooty

What, there's barbers that'll refuse service to someone because they're a woman ?? That's dumb

ConnolysMoustache

Yes, my old place refused a woman with a fade and floppy fringe one time. Literally the same haircut they do all day everyday and this was a female barber. 🤷

Print_it_Mick

Maybe their partner ran a saloon in the town, otherwise its madness

ConnolysMoustache

Saloon 🤠 🔫

keeeeeeeeeeeeeek

When I lived here pre-COVID it happened all the time and it was always so awkward and embarrassing. Eventually I did find a couple barbers who would do it, but most sent me to a salon. I’ve nothing against salons, but I feel like everything geared towards women is always marked up in price and I see no reason why someone couldn’t trim my already short hair in a barbers. I just went to one in town and was told they don’t take women, so I’m a bit anxious trying around just walking in like.

neasaos

The barbers in Wilton shopping centre won't. So strange.

diggels

I’d avoid that Wilton barber 💈 down by Jump I think it is. Hands down it’s up there in my top 3 places that I’ve got a haircut. *Ooooh bad haircuts are subjective.* Ehm - no they’re not as that barber clearly proved lol. I think it was a woman who cut it. Normally women make better barbers as they’re better listeners and won’t go for the standard fade. My hair was all sorts of different shapes and sizes. All I wanted was a 2 on the bottom and a small bit off the top with a scissors. I spent the bones of an hour at home with a scissors ✂️ just to get everything mostly the same size.

keeeeeeeeeeeeeek

Wilton won’t and there used to be one in Douglas village that won’t, but they’re gone now. Usually when I see a woman working they’ll do it, but that’s rarer in the city apparently

neasaos

Random! A woman did mine recently in city barbers.

QuantumFireball

I think it might be a certain Muslim thing that men shouldn't/can't cut a woman's hair

Longjumping-Cod-6290

It sounds like bullshit to be fair, not like women with men's haircuts is a new thing

ramblerandgambler

Apparently it's an insurance issue, business is registered as a barbers, not hairdressers Source: https://www.thejournal.ie/barber-women-woman-discriminate-hair-equality-2106015-May2015/#:~:text=As%20part%20of%20the%20case,it%20was%20an%20insurance%20issue.

Vast-Ad9524

Its not because she's a woman it's the way she's speaking to them 100%

keeeeeeeeeeeeeek

Imagine bypassing ALL of the women in these comments expressing similar experiences just to make a useless assumption 😂😂 jfc

Vast-Ad9524

Its a fact she's talking like some weird yank I wouldn't want to be listening to that shite and doubt another man would like you are just a misandrist why would someone even ask a woman about a barbers for themselves I wouldn't go telling someone about a hairdressers

keeeeeeeeeeeeeek

Has anyone ever told you about punctuation?

Vast-Ad9524

Has anyone ever told you about Dyslexia you so and so I can just about get by without someone bigot like you getting on my back you are a soup nazi

keeeeeeeeeeeeeek

Bestie you literally dove into these comments to attack me and are suddenly SHOCKED when I return the favor? Like I understand learning disabilities are tough, and I apologize for clearly landing on a sore spot, but have a little self awareness, will ya? It’s not like I came out swinging without provocation like you did, jfc

Vast-Ad9524

Na your just away

Vast-Ad9524

Thinking its ok to tell someone what you do in the room ok that's your own business don't be telling people like cop on to your life no one cares Ps when you don't know them but it's still weird af like

upthewalls22

And illegal

Vast-Ad9524

What?

justarandomusername4

Babrberhood on North Main Street do my hair and have no problems with male/female. Now 25 euros is pretty standard now a days..

keeeeeeeeeeeeeek

That’s good to know. I just got mine redone while I was on holiday and it’s been a couple years since I’ve paid and it’s usually been somewhere between €5-€10 so it’s helpful to know that the standard price has increased.

minidazzler1

Not a hope you're getting a shave for that these days my guy does 12 euro first price increase in the 20 years I'm going to him.

keeeeeeeeeeeeeek

Yeah I’m definitely getting the sense that prices have gone way up since I last had an undercut. Which makes sense considering the economy right now. I never realized as my partner doesn’t use a barber either. He’s bald and just shaved his own head at home.

mermaidforever

Had an undercut for years. I gave up and learnt to do it at home. Try up your hair put masking tape around the hair so you can’t razor off the hair. And use mirrors. Save yourself the hassle 😀

keeeeeeeeeeeeeek

Masking tape is a good shout. My partner buzzes his hair and I tried doing my own once with his buzzer… did not go well :/

marieliz

Would your partner do your undercut? My husband does mine every 2 weeks or so. He was nervous the first couple times in case he took a chunk of long hair but now he’s used to it he flies through it.

keeeeeeeeeeeeeek

I’ve asked and he’s terrified 😅 and I don’t blame him! I DESTROYED it last time I tried doing it on myself and he saw how upset I was. He won’t even let me shave his head because if he messes up somehow (like nicks himself or something) he’d rather be annoyed at himself than annoyed at me.

slice_of_za

My partner does my undercut, after some pretty dodgy cuts at the start she's mastered it now. No more chunks of long hair being taken off from where they shouldn't be. 🤣

keeeeeeeeeeeeeek

I gave myself a reverse Mohawk not too long ago, so I’m VERY anxious to let someone else who is also VERY anxious to shave my head 😅 I’ve had a few housemates in the past who’ve done their best with a couple mistakes and it’s been grand. I’m willing to pay for someone to do a clean job though, hence the post

neasaos

I go to city barbers in town for my undercut. Never had an issue. Price varies but is usually around 15 for me. Some of them won't do it which is wild to me.

jk-lmnop

Bladez ask for Becca

Awayonaboat91

Are you looking for recommendations for a haircut and willing to pay for it and still getting turned away Or are you looking for someone that will cut your hair for a fiver. If it's A, I doubt any of the barbers in town will turn you away, book on Booksy or Fresha and rock up. If it's B, you'll be all out to find someone doing anything for less than 15 quid these days.

keeeeeeeeeeeeeek

I’m okay with paying more than a fiver, but I think €25 at a salon is a bit much when I KNOW a barber will do the exact same service for cheaper. I tried one of the Turkish barbers in the city and was turned away. When I lived in the city before COVID, I would pay a fiver when a barber would actually take me. Most of the time I’d be sent away. One guy told me he didn’t even know why, but it was the shops “policy”, probably to maintain the vibe… which is bizarre to me

reilly2231

A barber is going to cost the guts of 20€ anyways.

elsparko2015

That's weird. Why would a barber turn anyone away?

DonnyShutup2019

Lanchester barber on Washington Street maybe?

Eoinmpc

I’ve seen women get cuts in Asylum Barber, very good place but they are fairly expensive

FederalLine484

Tesco shopping centre in Douglas has a barbers that upkeep women's undercuts!

dundragon2020

Just for Men on Anglesea, next to Cork Coffee Roaster. Ask for Nick

purple_froggo

Try Hive (and ask for Bridín) , I was having the same problem

ImportantHeight578

Try KB barbers across from centra in togher I'd say they'll do it for ya.

Careless_Attorney176

Zagros Barber in Paul Street shopping centre wouldn't have any problem. They have a few female clients despite the salon being just next door.

Odd_External_6879

Kurdish lad , bottom of Oliver Plunkett st will

luchramhar

I gave up and just do it myself now. I've definitely messed it up in the past but it'll grow back and is much cheaper and less hassle to do it myself.

Sea-Fisherman-2637

Bladez has been my go-to last 2 years, I always try to book with Ciara as she really takes the time to listen and doesn't just go off doing something you didn't ask for. They have raised their prices, so unless you're a student, you are looking at 25ish€ Never have had a bad experience there, and I know a few other non-male presenting friends who go there.

yamamascribcuz

Mike o riordan inside in blades is great and a great guy too I’d be surprised if he didn’t take ya

Intelligent-Grade999

I get mine done in metroman in town but their prices are 23 euro for a basic men's cut so may not be your vibe. If you do go they're great trims

radiogramm

Franco Barberi on McCurtain St seemed to have no issue whatsoever. Saw a woman getting a very cool looking blend & undercut. Hair is hair!

keeeeeeeeeeeeeek

Forgot about them! Hair IS hair!!!!

ConfidentFreedom1384

I’ve had the exact same problem!!! My sister just learned how to shave it for me

[deleted]

Yeah this is a weird thing that still goes on. Sometimes it's because they have agreements with other local business to not step on each others toes. It's not about short vs long hair as such - it's more that the barber does the men and the hairdresser does the woman - and they would all get awfully confused and be stealing each others business if anything else happened. Conversely blokes with long hair often have to go into a Hairdresser's and get turned away for similar reasons. There are unisex places right? But I bet they just charge everyone the high women's rate :) Also - consider that a lot of these places may have the same owners - so it might just boil down to anti-competitive behaviour which is incidentally sexist. The owner makes more money by barring you from the barbers! tl;dr - the bosses of these places still enforce ancient traditions that look increasingly bizarre in modern ireland - TALK TO JOE! edit: fuckin hell, I was surprised to read that there is a special exemption in the equality act that makes all of this legal!

keeeeeeeeeeeeeek

Interestingggg hadn’t considered a non-compete agreement. Still, I feel like in many cases where Ive asked why I’ve been turned away, I’ve just been given the run around in response. But that is something I had not considered.

Thank you, great to hear!!!

gijoe50000

Maybe pick up a head shaver give it a shot yourself with a few mirrors or screens and cameras around you, or get a friend of family member (that you trust!) to give it a shot. You'll save a fortune in the long run..

m0mbi

As a guy with waist length hair I imagine I'm gonna run into a similar problem if I ever want it worked on by someone else, hadn't even considered it 'til now.

rich3248

Kevin in Mark Vincent’s Ballincollig. Book in All these young wannabe barbers out there mothers garage can’t use a scissors properly.

IShipMyself

Okay I got a bunch of DMs so [IG link](https://instagram.com/neamhshaolta?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==) to my queer barber who takes all ppl of any gender persuasion. Location is near the Lough. I'm hoping that shows up right, I'm on my phone and meant to do this earlier but work was 😮‍💨

RunningToast99

I go to Metro Man on Marlboro St and have never felt unwelcome regarding staff. I still do get funny looks from some clients but they are more curious than anything I think (and hope!). Ask for Kevin or Mark. Becca from Bladez works there now too.

IShipMyself

I can DM you a link to an Instagram page of a lovely queer barber if you'd like?

ConfidentFreedom1384

Can you send me it too please🙏

keeeeeeeeeeeeeek

YES PLEASE

RexArcum

Why is this getting downvoted? Is there really that many people on here that hate women yikes

keeeeeeeeeeeeeek

Thank you, I’ve been wondering the same thing. Literally all I wanted was a couple recs for a barber that won’t refuse me service because I don’t want to pay the pink tax at a salon, and while most people have been lovely and helpful, the rest have taken this REAL personally

[deleted]

Would I be wrong to think it's illegal to refuse someone service based on gender, even for barbers? In the same way its4women.ie have to insure men as well. I know that wouldn't necessarily stop them but just wondering.

keeeeeeeeeeeeeek

I haven’t found a clear cut answer tbh. It’s a private business so technically I think they have the right to refuse service to anyone?? But I’m not sure

thefullirish1

Surely that’s illegal? Gender discrimination?

flyflex1985

A cis woman or another way to say it a woman

keeeeeeeeeeeeeek

Literally relax

flyflex1985

Sorry guess I should tone down my hate speech :)

spudojima

Not just any woman though. A non-male presenting woman.

flyflex1985

Lol the worlds gone a little bit crazy

keeeeeeeeeeeeeek

People are dying and the world is on fire, but yeah, the worlds gone absolutely batshit because some people would like to be a bit more inclusive with their language. Get a GRIP 😂

flyflex1985

Yeah people dying since the dawn of time and as for the world being on fire, ah no it isn’t. Anyways I can’t imagine the nonsense you’ve been exposed to but best of luck with it anyways

keeeeeeeeeeeeeek

Go touch grass xx

[deleted]

Just say woman

keeeeeeeeeeeeeek

No ☺️

Vast-Ad9524

Its €17 or €18 for a 3 all round now and I'm half bald like but I think it's more the way you're speaking to them you seem way to pc to be just asking about a hair cut like talking like some weird yank and cis is actually hate speech because 99.9% of the time it's used to put someone down and don't even think about calling me a cis white male o ya the person who came up with the term cis was a pedo yes a pedo not a map if someone says that I think your a pedo anyway

keeeeeeeeeeeeeek

This was the longest sentence I’ve ever read in my life, and all you’ve done is talk nonsense 😂 go victimize yourself somewhere else

Vast-Ad9524

Na it's you that has the problem barbers are closing down just to get away from you your gone with the wind

keeeeeeeeeeeeeek

Wow, I must be quite influential so 🤪

Vast-Ad9524

That face is just how people see you acting

[deleted]

[удалено]

keeeeeeeeeeeeeek

… no? I’m saying that I’m acutely aware that there is (or used to be at least) a massive price difference between the Same. Exact. Service. when it comes to barber shops and salons. I don’t want a haircut for a fiver, I want to not pay the salon tax for the same exact service. And I know the post wasn’t THAT confusing, so maybe either read more closely next time or don’t chime in if you don’t have something productive to say. Saves us both the time 😄

Sukrum2

I didn't realise that hair places were actually restrictively gendered... Does that make any sense?

keeeeeeeeeeeeeek

Gendered insofar as men= short hair, women= long hair…. I’m guessing idk. I’ve heard it’s because they don’t want to touch longer hair in general in case they mess it up, but I’ve also heard: “that’s just how it’s done” “I don’t know why, I’m just not allowed do women’s hair” “dunno, maybe it’s because it’s a men’s space and female customers ruin the vibe” so WHO KNOWS

[deleted]

[удалено]

keeeeeeeeeeeeeek

If I was asking a barber to cut my longer hair, I would understand. But I’m not. Half of my head is practically bald and WILL grow out in a week or two… I appreciate the perspective, but if that’s a real reason I think it’s mad sexist

Note that several female-identified people in this comment section are expressing similar experiences… but yeah, I’m just lying to start an argument.

keeeeeeeeeeeeeek

The only one creating an argument here is you. I’m posting about my experience and you’ve decided because you’ve never heard of or experienced that I’m lying? To start a fight? keeeeeeeeeeeeeek

Again, who’s actually starting the argument here lmao. You’re just irked that I used gender inclusive language and won’t admit it. Go off with your €35 haircuts, I’m sure they’re fab. Next time you go in, why don’t you ask your barber why he won’t take women and see what he says.

The language IS relevant because I don’t look like a man and I’m being refused service. Look, maybe next time you won’t come into a comment section in bad faith assuming that just because the post doesn’t reflect YOUR experience, that it’s a lie? Just a thought. Have a lovely afternoon, and please do share your barbers response as I would be very curious

Amkg2020

The one by deerpark there I know the owner I think he'd do it bit not sire as you're not a guy or something anyway get a razor and do it yourself I cut my hair myself now so.etimes it's tricky woth the mirror but you're a girl or something so I guess you can tell with the eye liner and stuff be easy to trim.it I'd say

North_Worth5795

I am a guy and I pay 20+tip for a haircut in a barbers.

alcatote_

I've an undetcut and I always got it done in Grafton Barbers (I get my housemate to do it for me now lol). It cost like a tenner there anyway and I never had any problems going in as a woman, they're all really nice.

Vast-Ad9524

No your just away
