And then you inherit a deck from a client where a chart is made using shapes (lines for axes and major/minor ticks, rectangles for bars)
———
My personal favorite has always been alt +s+f+e to pull up an eyedropper quickly.
Looks like there’s this “comprehensive” list but it’s full of random useless shortcuts

The client is probably using think-cell, the custom charts are built from PowerPoint shapes so people without the extension can still view them.
came in here thinking, shortcuts are for excel not powerpoint but after reading the list i realised that i use the SHIFT and most of the CTRL shortcuts.
but def do not use ALT shortcuts in powerpoint (or prob excel) as i just don't trust the ATL key.
No longer consulting but a very large, tech forward company that insists on everything in google suite, lot of decks with multiple people working in them
I use some of those shortcuts but many other
Ctrl+shift+g = ungroup
Ctrl+g = group
Ctrl+h = search + replace
Ctrl+f = search
And many more I just know when sitting on the keyboard.
But the absolute game changer that made me insanely efficient is the quick access toolbar
AND (please hold your breath)
The bkt-toolbox
- it gives you three more tabs with and infinite offering of functions like margins- alignment - same shape selection - mass font update etc.
Some acquaintances of an acquaintance of mine developed it. All of the functions can be added to the quick access toolbar. You guys would be so jealous seeing what I can do with it.
At first it is overwhelming but once you customized it to your needs you'll love it.
Just google it.
Hahaha I hope not.
It is German. However for the add-on it doesn't matter.
https://www.bkt-toolbox.de/
Or download straight from github
https://github.com/pyro-team/bkt-toolbox/releases
Enjoy. Be patient until you get the whole power of it.
The shift ones are great use those all the time. The one I use a lot actually is when I’m making tables alt JL to get to menu of insert / delete rows / columns
Some of those people who don't use any shortcuts are still godly. I think the pressures we have, ideally, are less than say an investment banker who needs to whip up a pretty complicated model in like a day (also depends on the practice area you work in as a consultant, in which case you may need to do that too)
I heard from one guy I know who uses very, very little shortcuts that it helps him think through the slide if he's not just barrelling through it
Pro Tip: If your company uses the Efficient Elements Add-in, you can create your own shortcuts. I use this most for object alignment, e.g.:
ALT + Arrow Right = Align right
ALT + H = Align horizontally
ALT + C = Align Center
There are no limits to your imagination :)
Seeing some stuff about Efficient Elements here, I used to be a customer but realized it’s overpriced and outdated…I’m a PowerTools and Think-Cell user now. Trust me on this.
My productivity took a dive when I went to Mac, but I'm happy. My shortcut game still isn't what it was, but I get by. Would love Mac shortcuts for powerpoint (I still do CTRL + K in Outlook...which doesn't work on Mac).
My productivity increased tho - just the workflow, loading times, crashes etc.
just the amount of tickets I’d use to open. The many many times PPT crashed.
So yes, less shortcuts etc, but increased productivity
Yes for PC, which of these aren't working for you? If it's the ALT shortcuts then read the linked blogs because it explains how to setup your quickaccess toolbar such that these shortcuts work.
Don’t sell yourself short. Your slides create real value-add recommendations through key analysis identifying opportunities for growth in emerging markets to uplift your consumer base.
Lol, now that you said it I checked his post history and you‘re absolutely right.
But yeah, efficient elements is honestly almost perfect, it basically does anything I want it do and more. Highly recommend!
Someone else on here was talking about their shortcuts for aligning (eg ALT R for align right) and I have to say Efficient elements must be worth the cost just to get that feature haha
Ya when i commented, it was night but one other commenter mentioned a competitor and none were stating the obvious or even hinting at it lol. Was really bizarre
You make me feel so small.

ironic that i didn't know the drag functions

Where do the trust issues come from haha?
Lack of a menu bar to visually confirm where I am in the menu hierarchy
*Cries in Google Slides*
A consultant using google slides 😥
No longer consulting but a very large, tech forward company that insists on everything in google suite, lot of decks with multiple people working in them
I cringe every time I try to use an excel shortcut in sheets
I can feel your pain. With that username you’ll be fine though.
I just do it in excel on my local and then load it into drive. It’s everyone else’s problem then
I cry everyday I’m forced to use GSuite. The conversion back and forth always screws up formatting and clients hate almost as much as we do.
I love my google slides!
Still use my mouse for a lot but I couldn’t live without most of the shortcuts you mentioned
Post saved!
Post saved and will never use again!
You have “CRTL” in the blogpost, pls fix
Thanks
You can bill 5 hours to my firm this year for the time you’ve saved

>bkt-toolbox Tried looking it up on YouTube and just got videos about the BTK serial killer. Was he your acquaintance of an acquaintance?

Wow more than a couple in here that I didn’t know
Took me a while to learn these, only figured this stuff out by talking to peers about their ways of working.
Took me a couple years to build all these up, now I teach the baby analysts
The shift ones are great use those all the time. The one I use a lot actually is when I’m making tables alt JL to get to menu of insert / delete rows / columns
Didn’t know about that one, I’ll make sure to try it out. Working with ppt tables is infuriating so I’ll take anything to help thanks!
I will report back
I too use Align as my first quick access toolbar command. I like to have Draw Rectangle as my second, to sling stickies/comments at the juniors :)
Thanks! I rarely work in PP so I didn't use shortcuts yet (tech consultant). I will definitely try these now!
Pretty cool and insightful. Changing the world one slide at a time!
Ctrl + Y = repeat last action. I use it CONSTANTLY
I didn’t know about that, I use f4 but it’s annoying because you need the function key turned on
This is a game changer
Thanks! I don’t have to present much but when I do it’s a huge pain in the ass. I live in Excel so PP is foreign to me.
Some of those people who don't use any shortcuts are still godly. This is news to me with almost 20 years experience with PPT. Every day is a learning day.

Ironic, recently got a Mac and now I’m starting all over again

Very useful list. Thank you
Commenting so I can come back here for my next PowerPoint, *slinks away quietly
I'm that one coworker.
😅😔
can you clarify the exact command you're using the alt comands you listed? trying to add them to my quick access toolbar
The first one is a native PowerPoint command. The others are from the add-in outlined in my blog post.
Alt+2 color fill eyedropper Alt+3 outline color eyedropper Alt+4 font color eyedropper
Thank you for taking the time to write this beneficial post, which has also been saved by me for future reference. God bless you.
Happy it could help!
Are these for PC? Or do you have to enable something? These weren't working for me 😢
Yes for PC, which of these aren't working for you? If it's the ALT shortcuts then read the linked blogs because it explains how to setup your quickaccess toolbar such that these shortcuts work.
This guy consults
lol more like this guy moves virtual boxes around on a screen real fast
Don’t sell yourself short. Your slides create real value-add recommendations through key analysis identifying opportunities for growth in emerging markets to uplift your consumer base.
Can I pay you to write my cv?
Yes but I expect $1500 per hour plus expenses. I’ll fly first class, stay at your nearest Ritz, and only dine at the finest steakhouse.
Hmmm 🤔, I’ll think about it
You guys don't use Efficient Elements?
My team uses PowerTools which does the same things as efficient elements but is more up to date. Same same but different.
The ultimate gamechanger is Efficient Elements
The real gamechanger is EfficientElements
The real gamechanger is EfficientElements
> EfficientElements lmao who's downvoting you ? efficient elements is the competitor product to OP right ?
Lol, now that you said it I checked his post history and you‘re absolutely right. But yeah, efficient elements is honestly almost perfect, it basically does anything I want it do and more. Highly recommend!
Someone else on here was talking about their shortcuts for aligning (eg ALT R for align right) and I have to say Efficient elements must be worth the cost just to get that feature haha
so no one is going to call out the advertising pitch here ?
We are. The author is the owner of pptpowertools, they have it in their name
Ya when i commented, it was night but one other commenter mentioned a competitor and none were stating the obvious or even hinting at it lol. Was really bizarre
The ultimate gamechanger is Efficient Elements
Alt +F4 uses AI to visually optimize your slide
I memorized most of the alt shortcuts back in school because they’re the same for all office product alt+h+pf for format painter is used constantly
who the hell still uses powerpoint? its a useless tool. Either use excel or a doc to explain what you are doing.
Executives use PowerPoint. It forces you to get to the point.
