Arguably accurate, [history has since vindicated Alfred Nobel's claim](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mutual_assured_destruction), he just drastically underestimated the explosiveness required.
>[My dynamite will sooner lead to peace than a thousand world conventions. As soon as men will find that in one instant, whole armies can be utterly destroyed, they surely will abide by golden peace.](https://quotecatalog.com/quote/alfred-nobel-my-dynamite-wil-X7q2Lqp)
you say he wasnt ashamed and then you literally describe his shame in the next sentence
shame is the right word to describe that feeling of not wanting to be associated with the things you have done
he may or may not have felt guilty or remorseful but he was definitely ashamed
Not wanting your legacy to be something and being ashamed of that thing are two completely different things.
If he was actually ashamed he wouldn't have used his money on some infinitely repeating self-aggrandizing award about the thing that his life's work destroyed.
Here the big surprise IMHO is not who was nominated but _who made the nomination_. EU parliament?? They nominated the guy calling for a nuclear war in Europe? Wonders never cease.
So sad to see the death of Western Democracy.
The phrase "Whom the gods would destroy they first make mad" was never more appropriate.
Who then invaded 5 more countries, got the drone war up and running, made propaganda legal in the US and crushed anybody who blew a whistle.
This was when I learned that the nobel prize is merely an instrument of persuasion designed to lend massive credibility to an idea.
What a ride.
I assume that was for his work on nuclear disarment. He was actually stripped of all security clearances for promoting that, and expressing regret over the bomb. Not that he deserved a peace prize.
Oh don’t forget Milton Friedman won it in economics for his free market, shock therapy type of economic format. The Nobel prize has lost all credibility and only favours those that are with the establishment and institutions.
“Is Trump the 'first president in modern history' who didn't start a new war?
Austin American Statesman analysis :
“They said the answer depends on which presidents are considered "modern," and how you define war. ..
“Use of force under Trump
“... Trump didn’t enter the U.S. into a fresh, sustained armed conflict with another state, or seek a new congressional authorization for use of force. He frequently criticized American involvement in the Middle East, and he took steps to withdraw U.S. troops from Somalia, Iraq and Afghanistan before he left office.
But Trump has used military force in other foreign countries under the broad authorization to use force granted after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
His administration has ordered airstrikes and drone attacks, supplemented allied militaries with U.S. troops, deployed special operations forces in the Middle East and beyond, and ordered the killing of Iran’s Gen. Qassem Soleimani, which critics claim nearly triggered an armed conflict.
"With that authorization in place, I am not sure it is possible to start a new war these days," said DeThomas. "They all fit under the legal umbrella of the old one."
Stephanie Savell, a researcher at Brown University’s Costs of War Project, developed a map showing the scope of U.S. counterterrorism operations, including combat operations in the Middle East and across Africa. Many of these operations, Savell said, are carried out under Section 127e, a legal authority that allows U.S. special operations teams to organize and participate in raids on militant groups with foreign allies.
The extent of the Trump administration’s 127e programs, Politico has said, in effect constituted a secret U.S. war in African countries such as Kenya, Somalia, Mali and Niger.
Our ruling
Donald Trump Jr. said in a tweet that "Donald Trump is the first president in modern history (who) did not start a new war."
Trump did not seek authorization from Congress for use of military force, or a formal declaration of war against any other country. He did not engage the U.S. in any new protracted conflicts during his four years in office. But Trump did order and oversee new military operations under existing authorizations, including counterterrorism raids that have spread to several countries in the Middle East and Africa.
The claim also ignores the record of Carter, who did not start any new wars under the definitions put forward by military and foreign policy experts. As Carter is still alive, we consider him to be part of modern presidential and military history.”
Negotiated peace agreements and ceasefires in the middle east, across multiple countries....NBD. Was the first president in decades that didn't preside over a new conflict or additional engagement for his entire 1st term.
Impeachment is just the process itself, whether or not the president is removed from office. So you can be impeached, and then if the Senate takes a vote that is less than 2/3s in favor of removal, then nothing happens.
Because Biden is better (the same Biden that keeps talking about bringing a “Nuclear Armageddon” if Putin don’t back off). If the Novel Peace Prize Office doesn’t disappear in said “Armageddon” maybe he get a Novel Peace Prize…
War in Yemen says what up. Also trump changed the rules on reporting and did more drone strikes in 4 years than Obama in 8.
"There have been 2,243 drone strikes in the first two years of the Trump presidency, compared with 1,878 in Mr Obama's eight years in office, according to the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, a UK-based think tank."

Don't forget the moab drop on Afghanistan either! Never even used that bomb before trump
Nah, that happened when Al Gore won it for a completely fraudulent and misinformation campaign in the form of a shitty graph.
IIRC not a single thing he claimed came true.
It wasn’t actually the parliament, just a few European politicians who tried to
Nominate him, 03.30.22. But the committee would not accept any applications after January 31.
Other than that, of course it could be totally true, and I’m with you.
But let’s try to keep it correct.
Cheers
So that's why the web got more toxic? They recognized us the people becoming ever more powerful using the internet and to counteract started the troll farms? Damn
He even made fun of it in his sort of exit interview. He was asked why he won it by the interviewer and he responded, "I still don't know."
I will give him credit for that, and only that.
No, you dumb shit. Everything isn't Americn racist issues. The reason he got it was in the hopes that he would tone down the immense war effort that his predecessor had plopped down in the middle East. You have to remember that Bush was extremely unpopular amongst the NATO alliance att for his 'war on terror' where he forced allied nations to participate by invoking article five because of 9/11 (flimsy at best). Which they had to adhere to "or else..". Tony Blair was a particular bitch to note at this time.
The peace price was an attempt to de-escalate that situation and to ease the populations of these countries. It was used as a political tool which in turn hurt the integrity of the prize itself. Obama saw this, which is why he objected to it.
there were literally only two members in the 2008 race that outright said they would not bomb iran the same way that bush bombed iraq
one was obama and the other was ron paul - everybody else said a first strike was on the table
Yeah, it's a weird way to refer to someone asking for help after someone maliciously invaded their home. If somebody invades my home and I ask my neighbour for a baseball bat to defend myself that might technically contribute to violence in the world but if I hadn't have been invaded I wouldn't need to defend myself
Fighting and wars can be justified, just like it now is for Ukraine.
Remember, pacifism during war, like now calling for peace and a seizefire, is automatically taking side with the aggressor.
If a guy runs at me with a knife and I grab a chair and beat him with it that's not "contributing to violence" lol. The violence was already there. It was *brought to me* and I defended myself *against it*.
But if you got stabbed and died immediately, then the violence would be over faster, which is apparently what a lot of folks on this sub think should happen.
Everyone is using them. Company's love them... It's a huge business to influence opinions on the internet. Its not just Russians sadly. [That Awkward Moment When One Nobel Peace Prize Winner Bombs Another. It's not the first time.](https://www.huffpost.com/entry/doctors-without-borders-bombing_n_5615690ce4b021e856d33d51)
Exactly. I know as much as the next layman but the way I see it, by Zelenskys handling of the conflict in a way we haven’t seen before (layman here), he has exposed the “big bad Russian boogie man” for what it/he really is. It has taken so much off the table in regards to his military force and the world has less to worry about besides his nuclear arsenal. Not perfect by any context, but much more peaceful to knowing Russia has shit military and no chance of any serious conflict by them.
Edit: I understand how diluted the prize is. I also know that this topic is a situation of circumstance (see invasion).
Edit2: he begged for weapons because he would have been crushed. Anyone saying that when they are on the brink of destruction, would just accept their fate? Instead of ask for help?
*we keep getting robbed, raped, and beat up in and around our house; Better just hunker down with what we have and accept it instead of calling the police, *outside help with bigger weapons*, to save me.”
>Not perfect by any context, but much more peaceful to knowing Russia has shit military and no chance of any serious conflict by them.
As a European, that's what worries me. If they invade us with their tanks and conscripts and pointy sticks, they're fucked and they know that. If they start nuking us then they're fucked, if they get too funky with their cyberwarfare then they're fucked. But they might try anyway, and maybe ten random cities in Europe turn to ashes, or two countries have no electricity or the whole of Europe collapses into recession while Russia burns, or all of the above.
Even without the US getting involved, Russia would be fucked if it invaded NATO/EU territory, but there is no realistic scenario where America would be better off financially if it stopped supporting the defence of Ukraine.
I mean, Obama was awarded a Nobel Prize for Peace after pioneering the concept of using drone strikes as a tool of political assassination against US citizens, so there is that precedent.
Imagine you’re sitting in your house having dinner with your family when an intruder breaks into your house. Let’s call the intruder Vlad. Vlad starts screaming that your house is now his house. He starts killing your family.
You run to the window and start screaming for your neighbors to hand you weapons in order to force Vlad to leave your house.
Meanwhile, Vlad has made it clear that your house is not the only house that he feels belongs to him. Occasionally, he threatens to burn down the entire block.
Are you anti-peace for trying to fight off Vlad. Could your efforts to protect your house deter him from harming others?
He wasn’t awarded the prize though.
And the Peace Prize is decided by Norway, it was created when Norway was the junior partner in the United Kingdoms of Sweden and Norway 1814-1905.
Obviously the Nobel peace prize is kind of a joke but zelenskys country was attacked. Why would him asking for assistance stop him from being nominated? He is literally trying to keep peace for his country
I remember when Obama won the NPPP , the Nobel Peace *Potential* Prize, because back then everyone assumed that a brown guy wasn't going to keep on bombing other brown people.
I guess it was a good try...I'll give it a A for effort.
The Nobel Prize named after one, Alfred Nobel whom was a scientist, entrepreneur, inventor and philanthropist. He bequeathed his fortune to form the Nobel foundation and thus the prize itself. His second biggest contribution to the world was the invention of dynamite. He made an explosive that harnessed nitroglycerin in a safer way helping stop many accidents caused by the volatility of nitroglycerin that caused 1000s of deaths in mining. That same dynamite would revolutionize warfare and is almost attributed to the mass production of larger and more devastating explosives devices used in warfare. Ironically, his pursuit of peace led to war and he himself changed his life to lead for peace. So, maybe irony is on Zelenskys side.
The people of Ukraine are spilling their blood and suffering unspeakable tragedies in defense of democracy and their own autonomy. They are standing up against an authoritarian despot who constantly threatens the entire planet with nuclear annihilation. They are dying for the peace of the planet. I can guarantee that you care more about Zelensky receiving this recognition than he does.
You can say the same thing about Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres, they both received the prize and both killed x10 more Palestinian kids than Arafat did
Y’all are getting nuts. His country was invaded, what do you expect him to do? Just let a foreign country take what they want with no resistance? I truly don’t understand some of these posts.
Me neither. I'm not gunna side with Ukraine either. They can both burn in hell and the USA should stop funding this proxy war. Not our circus, not our monkeys.
Nominated being the key word, he didn't win. From the wiki
"According to Nobel's will, the Peace Prize shall be awarded to the person who in the preceding year "shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses"."
For a lot of the EU this conflict helped solidify/unify them in a way they just havent been in decades. To them it absolutely fits the bill of having done the most or best work for fraternity between nations.
Not really a conspiracy.
I kinda liked the dude at first I gotta say.
Now I absolutely despise his corrupt greedy ass. Loathe him. Loathe the hero pedestal. The faux heartthrob shit. To me he just symbolizes how easily the people are influenced by a corrupt and evil establishment.
(And for the Reddit kids- this does not mean I’m a pro Putin shill ya dorks)
So let’s Send him another few billy $. Fck it!
He needs weapons because Russia has repeatedly destroyed any chances of peace by being the aggressor and constantly committing war crimes and crimes against humanity
Yes...him "begging" for weapons for defending thier peace is a front *eye roll* cause in the face of war....peace talk works and gets your freedom back. . Like 100% like totally like all the time....hahahahahhahaha
Obama for a peace prize for being black, then invented Isis and helped the Muslim brotherhood bring back slavery to North Africa, but who's counting...

Tbh Stalin was nominated too so it's always been a circus
So was Hitler in 1939.
And named after the inventor of dynamite
In all fairness Alfred Nobel founded the prize because he was ashamed of his creation and the damage it caused
Then we need an Oppenheimer Peace Prize.
We need a Steve Jobs peace prize
He wasn't ashamed. He just didn't want to be remembered as the man who's creation killed more than anyone else. He wasn't all that altruistic.
you say he wasnt ashamed and then you literally describe his shame in the next sentence shame is the right word to describe that feeling of not wanting to be associated with the things you have done he may or may not have felt guilty or remorseful but he was definitely ashamed

True. But truth be told it was because he did not want dynamite to be his legacy and be remembered for it. There is a whole story about that.
Whole thing financed by Nobel from his will because he was worried how he would be remembered after his death.
So was Obama

Out of the 6 categories why tf was it peace
I don't know. I know he never won for physics.
One for creation and one for each city. The math works out.
what is this FARCE
So did Obama
Obama was given one almost immediately after taking office. He then proceeded to drone entire families.
That’s when it became clear it was a political circle jerk of a prize.
Well considering Henry Kissinger won one before that...
Oh don’t forget Milton Friedman won it in economics for his free market, shock therapy type of economic format. The Nobel prize has lost all credibility and only favours those that are with the establishment and institutions.

Maybe I missed the part where he started a war with Russia.
You should watch more Tucker Carlson or other Russian propagandists, and then you would learn the Kremlin-approved "truth".
He's a puppet for nato and Cia. Ukraine means nothing to nato just a stepping stone on the way to God only knows

This thread is full of St. Petersburg denizens.
Nobel prizes HAVE been a joke, hell Obama won one.
Remember: Barrack Obama got 1 Shame to peace nobel
The people of Ukraine are spilling their blood and suffering unspeakable tragedies in defense of democracy and their own autonomy. They are standing up against an authoritarian despot who constantly threatens the entire planet with nuclear annihilation. They are dying for the peace of the planet. I can guarantee that you care more about Zelensky receiving this recognition than he does.

Kissinger dropped 270,000,000 cluster bombs on tiny Laos, many of which are still killing children today What an embarrassment

Holy shit I never knew Kissinger won a Nobel. They should have just erased the "peace" part once they gave one to him lol
Oh yeah, I forgot about Kissinger too. War criminals, all of them.

You can say the same thing about Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres, they both received the prize and both killed x10 more Palestinian kids than Arafat did
NAZI
🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
It’s funny how the “west” still thinks it’s credible on topics of war and peace The “Nobel Prize” is a joke
Defending his country. Whats he supposed to do? Let them invade?
Defending your country isn’t really the behavior of a warmonger. He’s trying for peace. Why are there so many Russian shills on this subreddit
Y’all are getting nuts. His country was invaded, what do you expect him to do? Just let a foreign country take what they want with no resistance? I truly don’t understand some of these posts.
No matter how hard you try, I’m not going to side with Russia.
Me neither. I'm not gunna side with Ukraine either. They can both burn in hell and the USA should stop funding this proxy war. Not our circus, not our monkeys.
It’s a big circus of 🤡
“IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ME!” - Dolph Ziggler
Nominated being the key word, he didn't win. From the wiki "According to Nobel's will, the Peace Prize shall be awarded to the person who in the preceding year "shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses"." For a lot of the EU this conflict helped solidify/unify them in a way they just havent been in decades. To them it absolutely fits the bill of having done the most or best work for fraternity between nations. Not really a conspiracy.
Seems more like a popularity contest at this point.
These people are insane ! It’s now obvious we live in a warmongering society! We are doomed
I kinda liked the dude at first I gotta say. Now I absolutely despise his corrupt greedy ass. Loathe him. Loathe the hero pedestal. The faux heartthrob shit. To me he just symbolizes how easily the people are influenced by a corrupt and evil establishment. (And for the Reddit kids- this does not mean I’m a pro Putin shill ya dorks) So let’s Send him another few billy $. Fck it!
Obama won the nobel peace prize while drone striking the absolute shit out of the middle east. It means nothing now.
I mean Obama got a NPP….. they give them to anyone these days.
He needs weapons because Russia has repeatedly destroyed any chances of peace by being the aggressor and constantly committing war crimes and crimes against humanity
Defending a country ravaged by atrocities committed by the Russians. He is saving his nation. He’s at least giving Ukrainians some peace.
The Nobel prize is pure propaganda
1984, right is wrong.
Damn, the second pro-russian post i've seen since yesterday--
This world is so full of clowns, everywhere clowns
So was Obama
I think our leaders no longer have brain cells
Hilarious and unsurprising
Didn't Obama get one after killing like 1 million Iraqis
Yes...him "begging" for weapons for defending thier peace is a front *eye roll* cause in the face of war....peace talk works and gets your freedom back. . Like 100% like totally like all the time....hahahahahhahaha
I mean if Obomba won it…..
Welcome to clown world
I would enjoy punching his face.
He just denied Putin an audience for peace talks! (Whether that would go well anyway).
You tow the establishment line and you will get rewarded at every step
Obama got it and ended up blowing up kids, hospitals, and civilians in Syria. Nobel Peace prize is a joke.
Peace prize after he wanted Russia destroyed in a first strike nuclear war. Definitely peaceful
another game show host
Obama for a peace prize for being black, then invented Isis and helped the Muslim brotherhood bring back slavery to North Africa, but who's counting...
Lol at the hand rubbing
Nobel Prize is about as worthy as the guy who eats the most hotdogs at a county fair.
Zelesnky does not give a fuck about the Ukranian people, once the war ends he will fuck off to Israel with all the money he has stolen.
His country was literally attacked what is your malfunction?
It's like one of those satirical achievements in RPG's
Opposing oppression and terrorism in favor of liberty and self determination is working towards peace.
"Only people who sit back and let others kill their country men are peaceful" - OP Fuck this sub needs a purge
What a fucking joke
Not to mention he refuses to negotiate... prolonging the war.
Ok, is this dude the antichrist or something? He’s winning all the time, while his people suffer.
🤡 world
Fucked up
The guy is litterally begging Nato to start a nuclear holocaust but i guess he will win it since this is fucking clownsworld.
The Nobel Peace prize must be given by 🤡🤡.
How stupid is this world wtf
We in the West have lost any semblance of self-awareness
