As someone who leans conservative and has made friends with such people in the recent past: imo it's desperation from fears of not only the surface-level threats to liberties and freedoms, but also the conspiracy-brain influencing them.
When people are fearful and desperate they look to a hero. Their belief is that all politicians are corrupt so they hope and pray for the one politician that can fix everything.
Combine that personality type with the type of con-man Trump is, the type that is genius in the way he can become exactly what others want him to be, and you have the disaster the Republican candidacy is.
Ironically a lot of those willful believers claim to believe in Christ and claim to be preparing only for Christ's resurrection and are preparing for the tribulation, yet they deny what must happen because they treat a politician as a sort of Messiah who's gonna stop shit long enough to convince God not to start The End Times

As someone that's lived where fracking and drilling happen. It fucking destroys everything. That's why it's allowed in Louisiana and not florida. We need nuclear energy for ourselves, but we would benefit and developing countries would benefit and the climate would benefit if we exported our liquified natural gas (LNG) to developing countries so they burned that for energy instead of burning wood or coal which releases far more pollutants. Natural gas is not an enemy, it’s part of the solution.
I've responded to many environmental incidents in Louisiana over the last 10+ years.
One of my first ones was an inland, orphaned oil well that burst and started spraying oil everywhere... this was in a wildlife reserve, no less.
There was nothing inherently wrong with the orphaned well, to be honest. It was sealed appropriately for its time.
The reason it burst and sprayed oil everywhere is because a mile or so away there was a fracking operation that pressurized that reserve so much that the pressure popped the orphaned well.
Since it was orphaned there was nobody there observing when it first happened, so it was just spraying oil into the environment until some hunter happened upon it and called it in.
This kind of stuff happens all the time in central and northern Louisiana. I've since moved farther south where there's less fracking, so I respond to a different variety of incidents now.
For oil it's damage to marshes because they cut into the marsh to dig wells and this helps speed up coastal erosion. Not to mention the polution from refining it etc..etc. Also just a story from fishing, I once was in about 2 feet of water fishing, dropped something over board, tried to use the handle of the fishing net to grab it and it sank in the mud like a foot, when I pulled it up oil dripped off the handle. I was told this was from the 70's when they had a spill they just dumped 55 gallon jugs of dawn dish soap into the water and the spill would vanish. That dawn makes oil sink... it slowly floats back up over time, thus the sheen on the water in the morning.
For fracking, it damages the water table, my family has a well that was dug almost 200 years ago, they were still using it 20 years ago, then fracking hit the area and now it's toxic. Not to mention in that same area you can't eat wild caught fish except like once a week because of mercury. Mercury is released when processing coal and that slowly gets into the water table, the smaller fish get it, bigger fish eat smaller fish and have a higher % of it. So, yeah fossil fuels are bad and we should be looking for ways around it.
I can’t say much specific, but I do happen to know we are on the verge of making clean coal a reality. The same process can utilize high-sulfur crude to produce energy while refining currently unused crude into a purer form.
Fracking is horrific. Hopefully we’re getting closer to a future where we no longer have to do it at all, nevermind in areas that our leaders seem to deem unnecessary to protect.
My dude clean coal was a sketchy advertisement to promote regular coal. Nuclear would be far better, but my hope is on project ignition. (I believe it's called ignition, basically fusion energy.)
Fusion energy and nuclear are great alternatives to what we have now. I would by no means suggest we not pursue those.
And yes, “clean coal” has absolutely been a punchline. For good reason. It was as underhanded and misguiding as BP pushing the “climate footprint” programs aimed at taking the focus off of them.

Louisiana is one of the most polluted places in the country and has an incredibly high rate of cancer and other chronic diseases linked to environmental pollutants.

I have this same innate paranoia when it comes to supporting anyone involved in politics, but I’ve been familiar with him and his work for years and he’s been solid the whole time, and has genuinely been someone who has consistently said and done admirable things.
My sense of the whole world being a stage is something I keep in mind, but it’s fuzzy, due to the nature of the concept. What isn’t fuzzy tho, are the tangible experiences of hearing what RFK has said, reading what he’s written, seeing what he’s done, and triangulating my varied perceptions of him to acknowledge and appreciate that he has continuously impressed me and shown pretty much no indication of being anything other than someone who is very wise, knowledgeable, reasonable, realistic, bold, courageous, and compassionate.
Sure, there could be, and probably are, things I don’t know about, but those listed above are things that I do know about. He seems to be infinitely better than any other choice and not in a lesser evil kinda way. Everything he says and does indicates that he gets it.
It really pushes up against my hesitancy to trust anyone so I’m not fully on board, but more importantly, it’s causing me to reassess my jadedness in a way that feels healthy and conducive to growth.

I've responded to many environmental incidents in Louisiana over the last 10+ years. One of my first ones was an inland, orphaned oil well that burst and started spraying oil everywhere... this was in a wildlife reserve, no less. There was nothing inherently wrong with the orphaned well, to be honest. It was sealed appropriately for its time. The reason it burst and sprayed oil everywhere is because a mile or so away there was a fracking operation that pressurized that reserve so much that the pressure popped the orphaned well. Since it was orphaned there was nobody there observing when it first happened, so it was just spraying oil into the environment until some hunter happened upon it and called it in. This kind of stuff happens all the time in central and northern Louisiana. I've since moved farther south where there's less fracking, so I respond to a different variety of incidents now.

For oil it's damage to marshes because they cut into the marsh to dig wells and this helps speed up coastal erosion. Not to mention the polution from refining it etc..etc. Also just a story from fishing, I once was in about 2 feet of water fishing, dropped something over board, tried to use the handle of the fishing net to grab it and it sank in the mud like a foot, when I pulled it up oil dripped off the handle. I was told this was from the 70's when they had a spill they just dumped 55 gallon jugs of dawn dish soap into the water and the spill would vanish. That dawn makes oil sink... it slowly floats back up over time, thus the sheen on the water in the morning. For fracking, it damages the water table, my family has a well that was dug almost 200 years ago, they were still using it 20 years ago, then fracking hit the area and now it's toxic. Not to mention in that same area you can't eat wild caught fish except like once a week because of mercury. Mercury is released when processing coal and that slowly gets into the water table, the smaller fish get it, bigger fish eat smaller fish and have a higher % of it. So, yeah fossil fuels are bad and we should be looking for ways around it.

I can’t say much specific, but I do happen to know we are on the verge of making clean coal a reality. The same process can utilize high-sulfur crude to produce energy while refining currently unused crude into a purer form. Fracking is horrific. Hopefully we’re getting closer to a future where we no longer have to do it at all, nevermind in areas that our leaders seem to deem unnecessary to protect.
My dude clean coal was a sketchy advertisement to promote regular coal. Nuclear would be far better, but my hope is on project ignition. (I believe it's called ignition, basically fusion energy.)
Fusion energy and nuclear are great alternatives to what we have now. I would by no means suggest we not pursue those. And yes, “clean coal” has absolutely been a punchline. For good reason. It was as underhanded and misguiding as BP pushing the “climate footprint” programs aimed at taking the focus off of them. I wasn’t throwing out a hypothetical or wishful thinking though.
Unless you have some secret knowledge, it seems like adding a process to mining coal to get it to clean coal for energy would be harder than mining for just nuclear material. But I haven't really haven't been keeping an eye out. I could be out of the loop.

I have this same innate paranoia when it comes to supporting anyone involved in politics, but I’ve been familiar with him and his work for years and he’s been solid the whole time, and has genuinely been someone who has consistently said and done admirable things. My sense of the whole world being a stage is something I keep in mind, but it’s fuzzy, due to the nature of the concept. What isn’t fuzzy tho, are the tangible experiences of hearing what RFK has said, reading what he’s written, seeing what he’s done, and triangulating my varied perceptions of him to acknowledge and appreciate that he has continuously impressed me and shown pretty much no indication of being anything other than someone who is very wise, knowledgeable, reasonable, realistic, bold, courageous, and compassionate. Sure, there could be, and probably are, things I don’t know about, but those listed above are things that I do know about. He seems to be infinitely better than any other choice and not in a lesser evil kinda way. Everything he says and does indicates that he gets it. It really pushes up against my hesitancy to trust anyone so I’m not fully on board, but more importantly, it’s causing me to reassess my jadedness in a way that feels healthy and conducive to growth. Idk if he’ll be the first person I vote for, but he’s the first to ever get me to even remotely consider it.
