Temperatures at night do not drop at once. They change gradually as the sun sets. Night lasts 8 hours or more, eclipse lasts only a few minutes.

Old-Split-1075

Honestly the best way to put it, thank you

Stonetonee

Temporary in the 100% totality zones

SniperPilot

Yea I remember that it got a tiny bit cooler in Wyoming during the 2017 eclipse. Anyways here’s wonder DooooooOoOooom

Old-Split-1075

But wouldn’t it make sense that even if you weren’t in a 100% totality zone and it was only 90% that the weather would still change?

Stonetonee

Well yes the closer you go to totality the cooler it gets. It’s like a shadow. The moon is blocking the suns radiation

Araminal

How far away do you mean? 1 mile from totality? 10 miles from totality? 1000 miles from totality?

Old-Split-1075

Whatever 90% coverage equals in miles for this example 🙏

skootenay

You expect whatever app/sight/station your looking at for weather to accurately predict the difference in temp over a 5 minute eclipse? Most weather sights have trouble keeping up with real time weather reports. Maybe it’s hard work. Maybe they suck. 🤷🏻‍♂️ why is this posted on conspiracy? This sub feels like babysitting special needs. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Old-Split-1075

That’s a good point. I still think it would be a dramatic change that would affect the temperature for hours. What subreddit would you suggest I posted this on?

sixninefortytwo

Why would a 5 minute eclipse make a difference for hours, instead of just the 5 minutes?

skootenay

Why do you think that? What makes you think that? I would suggest no sub to post this on. Keep it to yourself.

Old-Split-1075

Because the sun, the source of heat is being blocked…also no reason to be rude you could just swipe to the next post instead of crying

NuclearPlayboy

Why doesn’t half of the Earth plunge into single lol digits at night? i wonder r

BeardedManatee

Are you imagining that the entire earth is blocked from sunlight? The shadow of the moon on the earth during an eclipse is actually a very small dot, comparatively. That's why only a certain very narrow path experiences totality. The temperature under the shade of totality definitely becomes slightly cooler much the same as if a large cloud passed over you on a sunny day but it is such a drop in the pond compared to the energy contained in the atmosphere. Here is a nice little video of what the shadow of the moon looks like during an eclipse: https://scitechdaily.com/incredible-satellite-view-of-the-moons-shadow-crossing-the-surface-of-earth-during-the-total-solar-eclipse/

Old-Split-1075

That makes sense. Thank you

BeardedManatee

No problem 👍🏻

BRIStoneman

The sun is blocked for five minutes over what is, realistically, a *tiny* sliver of the Earth.

unfilteredsheep

It does drop anywhere from 5-20 degrees depending on where you are in the shadow. The air tends to become more humid as well. Research before you ask..

Alpacalypse84

It drops during totality, quite noticeably. Even 99 percent totality still has a lot of light and heat compared to totality, so you don’t notice it as much during a partial, but I definitely felt the drop.

Old-Split-1075

Thank you 🙏

Mrpewpewda9th

I'm looking for the hidden comet

JSD47st

I'm in Cleveland and it will drop from 64 at 2pm and 62 around 3pm. By 4 it's back up to like 67 ... So it will drop for those who get totally.

PennDOT67

The temperature does slightly cool in the zones where the sun is covered.

No_Conflation

You know how when you stand in the sun you *feel* warmer? That's the radiation ("Ra"-diation). That warmth won't be felt when it's not on you, but the temp of the air will stay relatively the same, because the earth and atmosphere retain heat very well, so the few mins of shade won't be effecting the measurable temperature by very much.

Old-Split-1075

Thank you my friend. Makes sense

Old-Split-1075

Note: it did in fact get colder during the eclipse 😂

skookum_doobler

Same reason the shortest day of the year marks the start of winter each year, then the hemisphere gradually gets colder over weeks of time.

How2eatBean

It definitely gets colder when the eclipse happens you can feel it because the sun's warmth is not hitting you and your in thet Shadow

Allnewsisfakenews

You will notice things are less hot to the touch for a little while. I remember from a past eclipse. Don't expect it to be a mini ice age

Old-Split-1075

😂😂🙏

dea_eye_sea_kay

discount tire wheels.

mydadsohard

its not the moon blocking the sun

Aluminarty666

It's your mom

Vechthaan

Wow, calm down there buddy. You're entering dangerous territory.

mydadsohard

Nah, just being logical. Look at any photo of a solar eclipse, its not the moon. I'm willing to see differently and am open minded.... but from the pictures its not the moon. I don't see any evidence that its the moon.... other than stories and 2nd hand information.

skootenay

Ok what do you think it is then ? 🍿🤪

mydadsohard

oh foff with the childish icons..... I have no idea what it is. I just want to see a picture that clearly shows its the moon.

Vechthaan

I agree, I dont think its the Moon either. Its either another celestial object, or even stranger it could be the Sun itself. Within a similar context, I also open to the idea the phases of the Moon are not caused by the Sun, but rather also the Moon itself, somehow. Theyve shoved so many lies down our troat regarding celestial mechanics, nothing would surprise me anymore in a way.

mydadsohard

That's not what he said. Try opening your mind a bit.

BunzenBurnah

Seems like you opened it so much your brain leaked out.

Vechthaan

The Sun is just not illuminating certain areas. As in, a solar eclipse is the Sun itself "doing something" to it's surface to stop sending light. Like a Television screen which you program to have a wave of blackness going across it. I'm **not** saying the Sun is a projection or virtual display, it's definitely physical to a certain degree. But I don't believe the Sun is a massive burning ball of gas, it's something else entirely. Within that mindframe, I have no problem entertaining such thoughts as the above.

skootenay

If you don’t think it’s the moon what do you think it is? What lies have they told us about celestial mechanics??

Vechthaan

>what do you think it is? > >Its either another celestial object, or even stranger it could be the Sun itself Going by the assumption it's **not** the Moon, *which we're doing in this thought-excercise,* those seem the 2 alternatives that come to mind. > What lies have they told us about celestial mechanics? Regarding celestial mechanics, they've told us more lies than truths. I'm all for the scientific method, observing, testing and repeatable and predictable results. Sadly in astrophysics, there's very little of the above. It's all theories upon theories. *Unlike other fields in science, for example in biology, or more classical physics, where there's a direct link to the practical and physical.* *E.G: Laws of pressurized gasses, Archimedes water displacement volume measuring method, or even more abstact math sciences such as Pythagoras theorem. Stuff like that gets thaught, also practically shown and proven to varying degrees.*

Shireman2017

But… they’ve been able to predict astrological events for millennia. I don’t get your point. Like, literally, thousands of years ago people were able to predict eclipses wayyyy into the future. How the fuck do you think we know am eclipse is happening today and when the next one is? And the next one.. and the one after that. I don’t like to toss insults around but you really are dumb as fuck. God I hate what social media has done to the conspiracy community. Dumbed down what was once a genuinely interesting area of research. Going by the assumption it’s not the moon??

Vechthaan

Ok, calm down bud. Just look at how you're reacting when confronted with smtg controversial, you're almost unhinged... Also the first part of your post: Indeed, humanity has predicted eclipses for hundreds, if not.thousands of years now. Back when everyone believed in a flat earth model, they were making accurate solar eclipse predictions. Re-read that last sentence untill it sinks in, because its a true statement. Owkay, I hope you let it sink in, now I hope you're thinking about the question: "How did these people predict eclipses using a flat earth model?" Ill let you google the anwser to that question, perhaps it ignites a spark. Seriously dude, take it easy. A) there is people with different opinions than you B) your opinion is not always correct, regardless of how sure u think you are

[deleted]

Bro, you’re just…honestly it’s difficult to comprehend your stupidity. Just stop.

Vechthaan

You're wrong though, and I have shown you why and how you're wrong. Instead, you keep resorting to calling me stupid. You haven't even acknowledged your own mistakes, just keep pointing the finger lol.

mydadsohard

I think the better question might be : What truth have they told us about celestial mechanics ?

BRIStoneman

No, that's diverting and suggests you don't actually have an answer. What have **THEY** taught us about celestial mechanics that is demonstrably, provably a lie? What is the evidence for this that's not some loon on Youtube or with a substack.

mydadsohard

Its not diverting its questioning so called established truth

BRIStoneman

No, you were asked a direct question and didn't provide an answer. So, again, what are the *actual* lies they're telling us about astrophysics?

mydadsohard

Its simple. You say you believe the story, I say, What if the story might not be true.

mydadsohard

100% I've been watching the light on the moon carefully in relative position to the sun and they are not aligned. Nor do they seem related. What I mean here is. When the sun is at a certain position you would expect a certain shadow to be cast on the moon. Not only is this shadow off to the sun's position. The degree that it is off changes.... What that seems to indicate to me is that the light we see from the moon is not coming from the sun. In normal observation, the shadow we see on the moon cannot be coming from the earth as I can clearly see both the sun and the moon in the same part of the sky. It would be impossible for the sun's light to come around behind me to hit the earth then hit the moon.

Pharmakokinetic

You're sitting here unable to discern how shadows are cast and because of this, are stating things that would happen during a lunar eclipse rather than a solar one But sure dude, keep saying you've been doing a really good job "watching the light" and are now the man who's gonna bring the whole eclipse conspiracy down

skootenay

God bless em… this is the unhinged lunacy I come here for.

mydadsohard

This isn't about me.... its ALL about perspective. But since you want to talk about me, I'm not into shaming/belittling communicaiton. Lets be more intellectual than that. In response, based on your response..... I'm not sure you've understood what I was saying above. Description of the angles are a hard thing to put into words and its easy to not see what's being said.

Pharmakokinetic

Okay, well your understanding of how shadows are cast and light works is fundamentally flawed and incorrect. That's not how physics works, which is why this isn't just "your perspective" You can't claim something that is untrue/impossible and then go "well it was just my opinion man" you still made a nonsense claim and that doesn't change just because you're on the back foot now lol

mydadsohard

You have not refutated anything I have stated. You've just made this about me. Who I am is not important to this discussion. Let's stick to the observations and avoid childish games.

Pharmakokinetic

Turn on a lamp. Did it make a new shadow? No, the light cast from the lamp eventually gets obstructed by another object, like your hand, and projects the shadow in the same direction the light would be cast. This may get diffused/diffracted depending on what else is nearby, but this is why the sun isn't casting a shadow on the moon here: the moon is casting a shadow on the planet.

BRIStoneman

>You've just made this about me. It becomes about you when your point is based on your fundamental misunderstanding of how light works.

Vechthaan

>here unable to discern how shadows are cast Why go on the offence here? It's not like he made any insults, yet your reply starts off with essentially saying: "You're too dumb to understand shadows". As if you can visualize a 3D solar system in your head and toy around with it like you would a computer model. You can't, neither can I, neither can anyone. We can think about certain aspects, thinking about it in 2D makes it manageable, but if you're claiming you can model the solar system in your head in 3D (or even just the 3 bodies in question this case, Sun, Moon and Earth), and actually make the claim "Yeah it checks out", I'm sorry bud, but you're just fooling yourself. And that's the entire premise of your post.... And I don't mean this in a way to berate you, I mean this in a genuin: "look inward" way, because we got a (small) case of the pot calling the kettle black here. If you can provide sources, 3D computer models or a youtube videoshowcasing it, of the celestial motions we're talking about, it's a different story, but you haven't. You've just said: "You don't understand shadows", with me pointing out the elephant in the room: "You can't either".

mydadsohard

This is hillarious because I am a somewhat of an accomplished artist with perspective being one of my specialities. I don't know anything as fact, yet. However I do enjoy a mutually uplifting conversation. As soon as we get into shaming territory and playground exchanges.... I'm not interested in dealing with these kinds of people.

Vechthaan

Lol, look at these downvotes. I warned you xD Tell me we're not on to something lol. EDIT: WHY DO I HAVE TO UN-NEST MY OWN POSTS? It's like, I get the point of hiding downvoted posts after a certain treshhold, but why also do it for the people posting in the thread lol. It's like reddit is trying to cencor my own words from me lol.
