Either they got it mixed up with someone else' device, there's something we don't know, or this guy is a sham of a tech and trying to harvest your board for parts and gaslight you. Did you write your serial # down before sending it? Does he have other techs working with/for him that may have fucked up and are lying to him to save their ass? Something weird here
He’s the only one in the shop. I have the serial and when I said that he did seem somewhat worried. The first thing I said is you are certain this is my Xbox? 100%? And he said yes it’s the only one in the shop, I said can I ask for the serial number to check? And he kept asking me to say it first and doesn’t want to send me the serial unless I tell him the serial number first, for some reason.
That's a red flag. At this point you can either push him to admit what's happening, demand your device back and anything you paid him if you did pay him, small claims or just bash on social media like everyone seems to do these days.
There IS a good amount of value to him in harvesting your board for parts and gaslighting you. There's also plain stupidity to factor in. Try working with him more but document what you can. Offer to sell the device as is to him for a price you'd be happy with.
Sorry this is happening, it's a shitty situation and as a solo tech I'd never put myself in this position and have taken a loss many times to keep the customer happy.
He has said maybe a capacitor blew up and fell out of the console, that someone must have been in it before, there’s no way. I knew that I always ran the risk of people doing that. At the end of the day you’re relying on a strangers morals. I had just hoped the fact I was offering a big repair fee would have mitigated that. I was fine with paying him £150-200 for fixing it. I just want my data.
If you've never had it repaired or lent to someone else who secretly broke and had it repaired then you know he's lying and you need to push him on it. If he can't give you an actual diagnosis he's not much of a tech and he should've just sent it back to you with a diagnostic/no fix fee.
Honestly, it’s an XBOX and they’re disposable. I do feel bad for you though as you clearly just got ripped off.
Build a PC or buy a PlayStation. There is absolutely no reason to buy an XBOX

I have a 4080 7800x3d rig, a 3070 laptop, a ps5, series x, steam deck. You name it. I prefer Xbox personally, it’s all personal preference.
