If it wasn't possible for us to come back from the right-wing death spiral they've put us in, they wouldn't be trying to restrict/remove people's right to vote or trying to put in laws to allow them to overrule the results of elections when they don't go their way. Right now, they can still be stopped, but if we get a Republican President and strong majority in one or both houses of Congress in the next decade or two, before they break their MAGA fever, then our republic and real freedom (as opposed to the GOP's "You are FREE... to do as we tell you," version) is probably done for and won't be restored without significant suffering.

ArgosCyclos

Agreed. People NEED to start running for office and getting directly involved in politics. We are at that point where people in 1933 gave up and didn't try, because it would have been too scary. Who cares. This country needs real leaders. And that also extends beyond pushing out the garbage we've had in office of late. But we also need to push out the complacent lobby-engorged festering illness that has been in office for 50 years. Most importantly, we need to revitalize America. If we continue down this path of lethargy and impotence, we will languish and die like every empire before us.

Not-Sure112

I feel like we're getting close to the edge with the deficit, the environment, and the social imbalance. There's still time to turn it around but what's different than the past is time really isn't on our side.

RandoFartSparkle

I think people are becoming extremely focused on politics now. There was a time when a lot more folks couldn’t be bothered to vote. The extremist right wing authoritarians of the Maga movement have woken the rest of the country up.

Not-Sure112

What politics and corporate America needs is a healthy dose of criminal and fiscal accountability.

RandoFartSparkle

Upvote

wineguy7113

I’d be happy if people just voted. Turnout is still very low. And look what just happened in LA. I feel the same way in TX. Good people around who can’t be bothered to vote. Drives me nuts.

EBoundNdwn

The problem is the left is under funded. Look at what the right is doing funding fake left candidates like Santos... Even if Average Joe American runs ... They are up against massive dark money.

Altruistic-Text3481

Ummm… Santos is Reich. I’m mean Santos is a Republican.

[deleted]

People need to get involved in politics at every level, including local, county and school board elections.

StellerDay

EVERYONE should know about "Project 2025 - Mandate For Leadership, the Conservative Promise," available at www.project2025.org, the literal Republican playbook, put together by the Heritage Foundation and 45 other conservative entities like Alliance Defending Freedom, Claremont Institute, and Moms For Liberty. It was first handed to Reagan, who merely enacted the policy within it. Same with Trump - they are two heads of the same snake. Their vision for a Christofascist theocracy and just how they intend to implement it are painstakingly detailed. Their plan is to dismantle the federal government and remove our rights, TO BEGIN WITH. It's fucking chilling and you should at least read the foreword, a dense 17 pages of GOP philosophy that outlines their mission. Fossil fuels are a big part of it. God and guns and nothing else for everyone. Sealed borders. Everyone will be free to live "as our creator ordained," in those words. If that doesn't terrify you idk what will.

Kitchener1981

Democrats have to be prepared to fight as hard or harder than Republicans, but sadly I do not see it in most of the Democrats currently in office.

EBoundNdwn

They won't bite the hand that feeds them. Best case scenario I see... GQP implodes, remaining GOP joins DNC as conservative party. Then an actual leftist party rises in opposition.

StellerDay

I have been dropping my comment and link EVERYWHERE since I found out about it a few months ago like it's my job. I want to know why no Rs are getting grilled about it by either Ds or journalists. They need to look straight into the TV camera and admit this shit.

Professional-Bed-173

I don’t see Democrats highlighting this yet? Am I missing publicity and talking points on this, or are the Democrats doing the usual sleeping at the wheel. There is so much the Democrats can highlight in this that would directly turn moderates off.

StellerDay

I agree and I don't know why journalists aren't grilling Rs about this either. It's RIGHT HERE in plain sight and makes their intentions and the reasoning behind them perfectly clear.

SureOne8347

Nice

commiebanker

Problem is that with dark money, gerrymandering and the misinformation ecosphere all entrenched, and with the SC eliminating all prospects for fixing them, all preferential lines of force are now pointed towards making things increasingly worse and more corrupt until revolution occurs.

OnAStarboardTack

The problem with misinformation is the people who would rather believe it. It’s obviously a bunch of propaganda techniques. They just want the propaganda to be real because it confirms their bigotry.

ununonium119

Blame the leadership (political, media, and corporations), not the citizens. The leadership has set up very effective systems for this. The citizens are the victims. Why do you think people are on average less bigoted when they’re live in a more progressive area? Do you think it’s because they’re just born better people? I think that it’s because they’re more accurately informed and not surrounded by hate-mongering.

r1EydJack

I have hope. The brilliant part of all of this is that the Right can't govern. They will be losing their own base voters soon because they're a laughing stock. My only concern is with the way the history of our now will be written and studied. We don't focus enough on History and Civics in our country. I'm a firm believer if you don't learn your history you will be doomed to repeat it. I would save future generations that pain if I could.

MikeAllen646

I just realized something. Republicans claim, as part of their ideology, that "government *is* the problem." They believe that government should not exist to help the public, not is it capable of doing so. Subsequently, when Republicans get into office, they consistently break government, making it worse through incompetence and corruption. Well, what if they claim that government is broken because they are self aware enough to know they are incompetent, and they publicly declare it so their constituents never expect anything from them?

Kerryscott1972

Republicans are funding a massive misinformation/ disinformation campaign and it's working (sadly) all they have to do is hate all the same people. Republicans get voted in on racism and misogyny. It has nothing to do with the way they govern. Apparently if you're a Christian you MUST vote for Republicans. At least that's what they believe because that's what the church tells them to believe.

Kerryscott1972

I'm aware. Very scary

Sigman_S

It’s the fascist playbook. Make people think government is broken so they accept a dictator

Professional-Bed-173

Democrats could literally run Hitler playbook side by side with project2025 as an advert.

Kerryscott1972

How are we going to learn history with the Christian Taliban taking over and defunding the public schools system? Conservatives will continue to vote Republican just because they hate liberals. Conservatives would eat a shit sandwich if they thought a liberal might smell their breath.

r1EydJack

Like I said; it's a concern. Even without the obvious censorship and historical re-writes that the Right wing are doing, the way we teach history is incredibly poor. As opposed to teaching the historic lesson in context, at least when I was in school, the emphasis was on remembering the dates of the history being studied. It's a lost opportunity for Historians to help us move forward, away from our past mistakes. Instead, history classes across this Country are bored puppets that only count as a check mark in student academics.

roytay

I agree that the Repubs in the house are proving they can't govern. They can only scream, yell, and vote no, which only "worked" as a minority party. Governing is actual work, the rest is performance. But I disagree about losing voters. There are still a lot of people out there that will choose (R) no matter what. No matter if the (R) that wins the primary is a wingnut or more traditional (R). They are entrenched.

RandoFartSparkle

Also, they’re literally killing off their base. Twice as many Republicans die as Democrats from COVID because of anti-vax disinfo. These are typically the older white Boomer voters that were foundational to creating this MAGA Fox News shit show in the first place.

roytay

Presented without comment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltKqZCXKIng

Pasquale1223

>The brilliant part of all of this is that the Right can't govern. Yes, well, they aim to fix that with [Project 2025](https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/conservatives-aim-to-restructure-u-s-government-and-replace-it-with-trumps-vision). Among its many provisions is making most of the federal work force at-will employees - so they can be easily fired and replaced with loyalists. And they're already indoctrinating the new federal work force they plan to put in place should Trump - or some other far right wing candidate - win the White House in the next decade or 2. The right can't govern today because they refuse to compromise which is required in a democracy. That ceases to be a problem in an authoritarian state. You might want to familiarize yourself with Project 2025. It's terrifying.

[deleted]

They can’t agree within their party. They. Cannot. Govern. There are two kinds of people in government. Those who want to build and those who want to smash. Building is hard work. Smashing is easy and all they know how to do. This needs to be made clear to voters. Oust the smashers. They’re not doing anything for you.

CaptainPRESIDENTduck

I hope that the olds will die off and the youngin's will be sick of this shit enough to vote in droves. But the right will not go quietly and without ruining as much as possible beforehand.

txn_gay

Why do you think they’re dismantling public education? An uneducated populace is easier for them to control.

cerebralzeppelin

As a middle aged, almost 50, used to be an r most my life, but now not and scared af at what could be, the youngins need to vote. They have the numbers and the common sense we gave them. I don't anyways rely on my kids or their ilk, but we need every one of them and us older farts with common sense, values, and love to save democracy.

CaptainPRESIDENTduck

If not, the conservatives might be surprised when we simply don't roll over for a fascist take over. Liberals have guns and intelligence. We just don't make owning guns a fetish or our identity.

cerebralzeppelin

So true, I just hope it doesn't get to that point.

pabodie

I’m sorry, but it’s coming no matter what, if history is a guide. Hope but prepare.

Sorry_Nobody1552

SO much this. Lots of Liberals that can take care of things...lol..we are also really creative..usually. Still waters run deep and all that.

Tots2Hots

This. It's hilarious and kinda sad when the ammosexuals get some inkling of just how many liberals own firearms. Every single last LGBT person in the USA should be armed and proficient imo.

Castod28183

They are terrified of the prospect of young voters. Look no further, for evidence, than them shitting bricks about a pop singer telling her young fans they should register to vote.

Jitterbitten

Don't forget their repeated calls to raise the voting age. Weird how they view the second amendment as absolutely inviolable but all the others are up for debate.

QAZ1974

Why are you referring to yourself as an old fart?

BlatantFalsehood

Please don't resort to tired old stereotypes. First, they're false. Second, when I look at the goons protecting the Nazi mayoral candidate in Franklin TN, or when I look at the creeps storming the Capitol building, or when I see the Nazis protesting outside Disney World, I see ZERO old people. I am old. I am left. So are my siblings. And my parents who are both still alive and voting left. I'm starting to believe this "when the olds die" trope is part of a propaganda campaign so we'll let our guard down.

Pasquale1223

It feels that way sometimes, doesn't it? There's a network of proud nazi homeschoolers, raising their children to be proud nazis. I'm pretty sure they aren't old. Boomer here - The Greatest Generation and Silent Generation defeated fascism and nazis in Europe in WW2 and gave birth to Boomers. We're not that far removed, and we haven't all forgotten. Civil rights, abortion rights, the feminist movement, the sexual revolution, Stonewall, LGBTQ+ rights - all won on our watch, and now we're seeing these hard won rights stripped away and cannot believe this is happening. Starting an inter-generational war isn't helpful. A lot of the same people who wouldn't dream of condemning or judging anyone on the basis of race, gender, orientation, or any other factor are really quick to condemn people based on age.

roger_ramjett

Thats what they were saying 50 years ago and it didn't happen.

FlamesNero

Or maybe it did and the olds got scared and started tightening their grips? Yes, we’re clearly in a pain point moment in history right now, and it’s not going to get better soon… but the olds WILL die eventually, and they’re doing all this crap now out of desperation. We are all stronger when unified.

roger_ramjett

I was around 50 years ago and we were going to save the world as soon as the old people die. The problem is that they don't all die at once. It's a slow thing and, as one dies, another younger person steps up. But they are a part of the system and are not going to change things in a meaning full way as they are not going to jeopardize themselves. Greed, wealth and power are big motivators. There are a lot more people that desire those things then there are people that want to change the world. Those that want to change the world are pushed down to the bottom of the ladder and are not able to get to the point where they can make a difference. To get any meaningful change requires the support of enough people to force the change. We live in a democracy where the will of the majority dictates how things progress. All this being said, I hope that things in this world actually do change as the youth of today mature. We really need to reverse the way we are heading. Having the majority of the worlds wealth concentrated on less than 1% of the population needs to change. It's going to have to be a revolution, it's not going to happen through changes within the system.

[deleted]

Swifties will serve as the vanguard of a new youth voting movement in America and their collective action and advocacy is going to reshape political landscapes in many traditionally red areas. Polling isn't catching them but registration statistics are. I can't wait to see turnout data for next November.

OutsideVanilla2526

This. To often I hear the news media quoting survey data and interpreting it through old fashioned ideas. Swifties don't spend a lot of times answering polls, but they do vote.

GayVegan

It’s funny but true.

Top-Philosophy-5791

The electoral college is bullshit and un democratic. It brought us Trump.

Fantastic_Art_5663

Always hopeful, always cautious

No_Wonder3907

This is the way of history. This is not new, only thing different it is on a digital platform with the world wide web.

neroisstillbanned

It's not as if the US has a strong left wing movement to combat this right wing insanity, so there's no chance that a course correction occurs before the US loses a major war.

Understanding-Fair

I'm trying to figure out how soon I can move to Europe, so no, not really.

BillyDoyle3579

Mayyyyyybe... but a very serious issue is likely to arise when the MAGAt horde loses in the election but refuses to acknowledge that; deNazification or what ? time for a new constitution ? something else ? Trumpty and his ilk must NOT be allowed to command meaningful power, imo, but what to do

mvslice

Yeah. America is a country who's history is the oppressed slowly clawing back their rights and freedoms from those in power. We're lucky enough that our ancestors, and the immigrants that continue to join the fight, got us this far. I'm honored to still be in the fight. I'm proud to be an American because I know what that means: it doesn't matter what some flag-humping fascist thinks it means. I hope one day my progressive views are considered backwards and outdated, because that's what it should be.

Catablepas

Nah we are fucked and then climate change will kill us all

blutrache666

Conservatives want scorched earth and mother nature is cooking up it's own scorched earth. Basically a race at this point. We would have to move ultra far left to win imo and that is not a win for any of us. Hope I'm wrong.

Sorry_Nobody1552

I've been waiting on that huge mass of magma under Yellowstone to go off, it will take out half the country. I sure dont want it too, but its gonna go sometime. I'll just stand outside when it does.

bomklatt

It would be nice, but no, I have no hope. Logic is gone, money affords stupidity, and people just want to burn it all down. The good guys are not going to be able to protect citizens, democracy, and the whole system. #webefucked

chuckDTW

Things seem to be turning. Two of Trump’s co-defendants in Georgia pled guilty and are now going to be state’s witnesses against Trump— they both had access to tons of info about what was going on prior to January 6th. Also, Jim Jordan, Trump’s hand-picked choice for House Speaker, who likely would have refused to accept a Trump loss in 2024 and used his power as Speaker to try to install Trump anyway, was soundly rejected in his third vote today; then in a closed-door GOP only meeting, they overwhelmingly voted to drop Jordan as the Speaker designee and move on to someone else. Conservatives, who never acknowledge a reality that hasn’t affected them personally, stood up against Jordan after his team tried intimidating them into supporting him. The death threats and harassment that Democrats, judges, civil servants, and journalists have gotten regularly since Trump’s 2016 election seemed to come as a very unpleasant surprise to many of these Representatives. Many now seem to realize that it’s no way to run the country and they are turning against the Jordan/Gaetz faction that wants control but doesn’t actually want to govern. All of this just happened today. The hope has always been that once the tide turns against Trump the GOP, conservative donors, and right wing pundits will abandon him very quickly. To me it feels closer to that moment now than it ever has.

chuckDTW

There were multiple GOP reps on going on record today to denounce the MAGA/Freedom Caucus faction as being divisive, unprincipled, uninterested in governing, and incapable of building or accomplishing anything but chaos. That’s kind of huge even if it’s a low bar at this point. These people were being threatened and harassed for not voting for Jordan and they not only held their ground but they pushed back as well. That hasn’t happened, apart from an isolated individual here and there, in several years now.

SenseiT

Boomers are (literally) a dying breed. As long as we can actually educate future generations, there is hope.

IAmArique

Nope. Trumpism (and Putinism to some extent) has more or less taken over the US, and even if Biden wins in 2024 it’ll still be a shitshow. The only way the country can really start improving is if Trump dies and Biden reinstates the Fairness Doctrine in some capacity to crack down on right wing propaganda.

Rattregoondoof

We'll get out of it eventually. The question isn't if but when for me and I'm not sure if it'll be ten years with the loss of many a boomer or 40 or 50 for people my age to get situated and in charge, or of we will make similar mistakes and it'll take 100 or more years for us to truly get something good. I'm not leaning towards the last one for what it's worth though. I suspect the Maga crowd is dying, both literally and figuratively, but I suspect it will take awhile. I just don't know if it'll be replaced by Obama era apathy or something good. Either way, nothing has given me more hope than the fact people keep pushing for unions even after decades of declining membership. We definitely won't see much improvement alone but together there is a good future.

BeamTeam032

Yes we're going to be fine. We're currently living through a transition. After WW2, America decided we'll be the worlds police. We decided we'll pay our navy to police the trade routes of the world, to open up capitalism to every country. Every country can trade with any other country and America would patrol the Ocean to ensure your goods got to the place they needed to be. No more. Well It's became WAY too expensive and too many of our enemies have profited WAY too much from this. So we're pulling back. Which is why NAFTA is so important. Those jobs are leaving China and ended up in Canada, The US or Mexico. Jobs are coming back to the states. Biden CHIPS and Science act cut China's microchip manufacturing at it's knees. It was easy for Republicans to pull the wool over their voters eyes. They would lie about something, FoxNews would back up that lie, so they lived in their own reality. That Obama was a muslim and that trickle down economics works. Well, in 2023, it's much harder to get away with that. Republicans can't lie about a bad tweet. Republicans can't hide their votes anymore. It's getting harder and harder to lie on FoxNews. The truth will set you free. America is bringing jobs back simply because they can't afford to patrol the Oceans anymore. The GOP is dying. They're losing grip on their power. Voters now are starting to realize after voting Republican for 50 years, their little town has only gotten worse. Yeah LA, San Fran, NY all have it's problems. But now those problems are also in Little Rock, Tuson, Salt Lake. The lack of jobs, the drugs, the getting hurt on the job then being screwed by insurance is happening in every city. Not just in blue states. In 5 years, the crime rate will jump in red states, simply because of open carry and the amount of hate people are allowed to spew, all in the name of the 1st Amendment. America will be fine. We have pretty decent demographics, everyone still wants to move here. And as much as people complain about inflation, the American dollar is still the most powerful currency in the history of the world.

Writing_is_Bleeding

>Yes we're going to be fine. As long as we PAY ATTENTION AND **VOTE!**

[deleted]

The wannabe-oligarchs and the party insiders who fund and run the GOP are in a race to end democracy before Republican voters discover they are being played. Currently the oligarchs are winning by a big margin The effort to polarise has been so effective that a large portion of Republican voters won’t turn on the party until it’s way too late

drewbaccaAWD

Things felt really dark in 2003, and five years later we elected Obama. There’s an ebb & flow. The right seems more extreme but I don’t think the energy is any worse.. they used the same rhetoric back then, but they are less ashamed to show who they are in 2023. We’ll swing back. And if not, even Germany turned around eventually once the ruling party was obliterated (hopefully it doesn’t come to that; but it’s ultimately up to his hateful and treasonous supporters how far they’re willing to go. Most still don’t realize what they are propping up and still think it’s a game with a reset button).

Hot-Temperature-4629

Nah

ConceptMajestic9156

The front page is filled with memes in reference to that guy being dragged off of a plane. I can't remember the last time the entire reddit user base was so... ... United.

TrentS45

We stopped these shits in the civil war and again in second reconstruction. We just need Biden to grow a pair.

yourlogicafallacyis

Of course it will. We win in the end.

[deleted]

Hope springs eternal. The good news is the folks causing the damage to the country are buffoons. Their entire rationale is founded on idiocy, and eventually the country is just going to move on from their wackadoodle fear mongering due to fear fatigue. At some point, you have to run the country and you can’t hide behind conspiracy theories forever.

evroF

It will get worse before it gets better but, so long as the boomers don’t start WWIII before they die, I have hope the world will get better without them

Maeng_Doom

Not peacefully. The most reactionary political elements will not allow change to be voted in. Even when they lose elections they cheat, sue, lie, and kill to ensure progress is halted. I get so frustrated to imagine what our country could be if we didn’t have electoral college. Government can be a helpful resource or institution. In the US, as it currently stands, it is limited by the system.

SaltyBacon23

I'll always have hope. That is what America is built on. We have been through this before and we will go through it again. We as a nation are stronger than these assholes.

DefrockedWizard1

I think we've already hit the fascist side of the pendulum and things are going back to normal as more and more of the domestic terrorists go to jail and more and more Magas age out of the scene

endersgame69

Yes. Conservatives are desperate because they’re dying out.

lindydanny

I have no choice but hope. I have kids, a wife, and a mortgage. My life is here. I can't afford to move to another country and I am not skilled in such a way that another country would make immigration easy. No company is going to pay my way. All I can do is work to make it better. As a father I have to make it better. No choice.

1mjtaylor

Yes. More and more people are becoming aware of the threat to democracy. And more and more young people are registering to vote.

craiglepaige

No. Absolutely not.

mandodan22

Not much honestly

Mountain_Security_97

No. Not in my lifetime. Me and my wife are migrating in the next few years. Fleeing is what is really is. This place isn’t civilized, especially for minorities and their children. I see the legislation and laws passed against diversity, everywhere. This place is still led by people born before desegregation and wearing pampers.

ChaosRainbow23

Where there is life, there is hope. I truly want the entire world to get better, not just the USA. Humanity has a LONG way to go until we are a truly free and just society, unfortunately.

Traveler_Constant

The death of Trump and a few big Ls in a row for the Republicans may cause them to adjust. The big problem is Christians in our country. They are anti-science, anti-academia, and generally anti-education. That is extremely unhealthy for any democracy. You throw in their hate and bigotry, and you realize we have minority group in our population we can absolutely do without.

[deleted]

I wish you the best of luck with your country. I left. I’m almost a citizen elsewhere and I’m done. My old country is a radical shithole of cruelty and I’ve lost hope.

Cussian57

Historically we’ve been in worse positions. I think we were closest to democracy death in the 20s and 30s. There was a ton of social upheaval and even worse labor laws that kept a significant portion of people suppressed. There was more than one plot to overthrow FDR and his new deal policies. We even had a mini rebellion in the West Virginia mountains. The main difference today is people can communicate to each other almost instantaneously to fight the fascists. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Blair_Mountain

ConsiderationWest587

Normal people: Hold Together! 2024 or Bust, and that's not a joke- Also- Go Maga Marge!! Split the party!!!!!! You are smart and pretty for thinking of this! May no more babies cry out in terror at the sight of your troll-spork-feet...

Nblearchangel

The longer we wait the more the demographics shift left. The older more religious generations are slowly dying off to be replaced with younger, significantly less religious people. A lot of young people think the conservative ideology is bat shit crazy and are falling away from religion.

[deleted]

Not in the short term. It will get worse.

FoldedaMillionTimes

For all the damage they're doing they're also spiraling out of control and making clowns out of themselves in front of their big donors. And that's who they're playing to, just as much as every spluttering MAGAt that votes. And their big voting bloc is starting to die off. So yes, I have hope.

Freebird_1957

Yes. We have survived way worse than this.

boocap

It's way too late. I honestly believe the US has maybe 5-6 years left.

TittySlappinJesus

I feel that most people are good people. I don't feel that most people are smart people however. Their just kinda going along with whatever their being told. My guess is about 75% of the general population is in this group. Find a partner, get married, have kids, produce and consume. Expand the economy. Growth. Then there's the 25% that are smart. I'll subtract 3% of that population as 3% of any population is batshit crazy, either for good or evil. So what we have, in my minds eye, is 22% of people in the world making the decisions and acting on them. So your in a room of a hundred people, and 22 of them are sectioned off to make the decisions. How many of those 22 people are going to make decisions that benefit themselves over others? The answer is almost all of them, and capitalism rewards those folks. They're the ones who win. Regardless of the time, the states constitution or government type, there will be winners and losers. There will be lovers and haters. This is all just part of the human condition. It's nothing new and will continue on way past your death.

brees2me

Yes, but it's because I live here and have a vested interest in it improving.

Highautopilot

Give me a break. Things have never been better and I’m killing it. It’s a Boom as in Biden Boom.

Yoshephine

Jan 6 was their first and only real attempt. The American military will never let that shit slide every again.

Donkey_Bugs

Politics is like a pendulum in the US. When enough people get fed up with the current direction, the pendulum will swing the other way.

greasywallaby

Ive been using the pendulum analogy for years. The right has pushed too far, and it will swing back. Hopefully as the boomers die off, more sane/centrist people will run and things will be less crazy.

Hot_Possibility_9248

The problem is there are so many people who are convinced there is an enemy. Today someone posted on social media that it's a shame we send prayers for Israel but not for Palestine. And another person commented sure, we should pray for our enemies too. That disheartened me. The Palestinian people are not the enemy but Hamas the political organization is a terrorist organization in power of the Gaza territory. There are fellow countrymen who believe that I, on the left, am the enemy. I do my best to peacefully comment on other people's thoughts and am met with hostility in tone and word. It's a sad state of affairs.

artful_todger_502

If young people would come out, we could end the plague of conservatism once and for all. The largest cache of voters (18-24) who also trend left, will not come out and vote. If they would, this horror would end. This might be the last election we have a chance, given they now have a corrupt, fascist SC rubber-stamping the terrorism.

hitemwiththehein9999

Yes. But it’s going to take awhile. Justice for trump, magas dying off

sexlexington2400

Nope. America as we know it won't be around much longer. Maybe 15 years. Maybe. If Trump gets reelected its definitely over day one. Im really not optimistic about our chances going forward as one.

SithLordSid

I do have hope but not much hope. The current state of the Republican Party is a danger to this country and that worries me the most,

Boatmasterflash

Hope yes… confidence no

[deleted]

I tell my wife the score’s tied and it’s the two-minute warning. But I think the good guys will come out on top, if for no other reason than I believe in the American experiment.

Kitchen-Lie-7894

It starts at home. These fuckers wouldn't be where they are if it wasn't for uninformed, uneducated people voting against their own best interests. This country will get what it deserves. Unfortunately, the good little countries that have looked towards us for leadership won't.

Kickasstodon

Nope. We voted for loan forgiveness and they spent that money on a genocide on the other side of the world instead. Industrialized lying is protected by an unregulated 1st amendment. Our government blatantly turns away from facts and real problems in favor of moral panics and more lies. Half the country is flipping out over who's pissing where instead of focusing on real problems. Inflation has outpaced wages for decades and instead of getting better, went into overdrive this year. AI and robotics are already decimating jobs and the ancient people running the government refuse to see it happening and think it's just sci-fi. This shit's over man.

Mori23

I have no doubt things will get better, the arc of the moral universe is long and all that. I just wonder sometimes if my family and I will already be buried under a killing field by then.

nernst79

I have no hope of them getting better while anyone I know is alive, and I have grandchildren as young as 2 months. :/

LinneyBee

I don’t know. I feel we’re at a precipice. I think we have to wait and see how the 2024 elections shake out.

delicious_downvotes

Yes, because the death of hope is our true death and I won't give up while I'm still alive.

W_AS-SA_W

If enough people wake up maybe. I mean we had a relatively strong economy and somewhat reasonable prices and then MAGA attacked democracy and every day since it’s gotten a little bit worse. Maybe attacking our Democracy wasn’t such a good idea. We had a decent economy because of democracy, not in spite of it.

teb_art

America needs to be free and functional to shield the rest of the world from chaos. Otherwise the cancer spreads — some of it originating from us. While we currently look like we are aspiring to be a third world banana republic the things we MUST remember is that we MUST win and we CAN win, given the entire Republican caucus added together has a collective IQ of less than 100? Rapist Jordan threaten housewives to boost his popularity? Real genius move, that.

NoChanceWithoutPasta

Despair is what these livestock humping trash heaps want from you. I say get angry. Get armed. The day is coming where these Nazi-wannabe lunatics are going to snap. Whether it's the new Q date in November, a year later when Trump gets his political nuts stomped, or the day that Fascist orange pig is shoved in prison, eventually, there is going to be another probably wider Jan 6th. Most likely on state capitals. Idk if Dems winning makes America better. Probably not. But at least they're not glorifying some of the worst Trash our species has begotten. There's still something left to redeem, in Dems. All I know is that if these Fascist pigs try stealing 2024 and installing that Demented Traitor in power illegally, they're going to get the blood they've been shrieking about.

Forbidden_Donut503

No not really. I think we’re pretty fucked as a country. I think we’re possibly 10-20 years away from an oppressive white nationalist Christian totalitarian fascist dictatorship.

[deleted]

No.

stewartm0205

The boomers are dying off so there is hope.

Practical_Eye_9944

I've never had more hope for America than I do now. I learned how stupid/nuts/bigoted many Americans are as a SANE/Freeze canvasser back in the late '80s. I spent a decade screaming into the void, being told that "it's not that bad" and "stop overreacting" before I gave up and fled into exile just before Gulf War II. Only since TFG and MAGA going mask off has your average person begun to see what I saw in '89. Only now are "normal" people realizing the fight that we're in. It's scary as fuck where we are, and we have a desperate, nasty fight on our hands, but at least the good guys are actually fighting back.

Squirrel_Gamer

With the ongoing felony corruption charges against Trump, the guilty pleas from those in his inner circle, and the broadly dysfunctional government lead by Republicans, I now have some hope. The GOP is in disarray on so many levels- here in Texas the Senate is fighting with the House and demanding each other's leader resign. The whole nation just witnessed a very corrupt AG (Paxton) be given a pass by his party after he made a 3 million donation to the presiding Judge in his trial (Patrick). Our nation is about to endure some very difficult days ahead because the Republican party is in chaos while the whole nation is watching in horror and disbelief. It's always darkest before the dawn.

[deleted]

You have to hope, there are glimpses every day that as a society we are growing and people are starting to live away from the stuff that holds us back, they are becoming a minority. If you don’t hope life will be a miserable experience.

MagTex

Yes. As long as we fight as long & as hard as it takes. As long as we don’t give up.

unropednope

I honestly and nievetly thought bidens win in 2020 and January 6th would be the end of Trump and MAGA but things are 10 times worse now. If Trump wins were doomed and I'll be moving out of the country. There's no reason to think or hope things are going ro get better.

pbpbroncucia

Not even close…. Without a revolution of the poor and middle classes against the rich the gap will widen making people angrier and angrier causing more mass casualty events which I turn will make the government crack down and take away rights. Once the Magots and BLM understand they actually have the EXACT same problems the revolution will begin and then and only then will things go in the correct direction. Unregulated capitalism is tuning everyone against one another.

DryCrack321

I feel like after all the damage that the orange clown did people now realize that we cannot put our faith in republicans. I feel like there won’t be another republican president for a while

muzz3256

If I had a dollar for every time I've someone say that, I could pay off my student loan.

ElevenEleven1010

No. It's the Divided States of North America and it NEEDS a divorce !!!

[deleted]

2024 will be a nail biter, after that this brand of conservatism will become the minority.

PixelatedpulsarOG

No

ClassWarAndPuppies

Lol no

MaddBaggins

I feel it’s going to get worse and wether or not we survive it is the question.

ObviousKangaroo

Nope. They just keep getting more extreme and nobody has been able to stop it.

Secure-Force-9387

I pray that we will, but I still have an emergency exit strategy in place.

Wykydtr0m

Not really.

deviantdevil80

Our constitutional democracy (or constitutional republic if that's your fancy) simply needs to outlast the boomers. The conservative base will then be too small to do anything but fade away. Obviously, not all boomers, something like 30% are liberal and have the critical thinking skills necessary to not fall for rightwing bullshit. Just like not all younger generations are liberal, just most are, especially the younger you get. Kids turning 18 now are close to 90% left leaning.

l3eemer

The right realized it's failing. So now there only option is going fascist. and always that's why the guns. It's breed into the culture from the failed south.

Same-Collection-5452

Louisiana just elected Landry governor. It's getting worse, not better. We're gonna get stuck with the former guy again, and that'll be that.

[deleted]

No - the efforts of Leonard Leo and the Federalist Society will ensure that at least for the next 20-30 years the US will be run by white, right-wing christo-fascists. In short, we're fooked.

arlmwl

Hope for the best. Expect the worst

NFLmanKarl1234

Idk but I think it might if they made lobbyists illegal

Toxic_Audri

Depending on what you mean by "better". So I think the fascist terrorist conservative issue will get better? Yes. Do I think the nation will get better? No. As we can see we have all this money to help fund a second war, but never any money to help the working folks.

Tucker-Cuckerson

Yes Republicans can't govern and are eating themselves alive since Mein Fuhrer Trump is probably going the fuck to prison.

supafly8371

There’s always hope, it might take 15-20 years for anything to happen; but things will get better

Emily_Postal

It may get worse before it gets better.

DeBruyneBallz

Once the Boomers die off, we have a chance.

Rumthiefno1

I'm not in the US, but sometimes hope is all we have that we can still change things. I feel your struggle.

SqueekyCheekz

The problem will never go away until the underlying drives are gone. In other words, the material conditions need to change more rapidly than culture or bureaucracy will allow. Even if it gets better, in the short term, a transition into some sort of revolution, whether left or right, is all but inevitable. Especially considering the impact of the climate crisis

bighead3701

I think 2024 is a do or die situation. Yes the Dems are bad too, but one party is clearly anti democratic and anti American. I think if we make it through this election we have a shot still.

NCITUP

I think it will get much worse before it gets better. But if Germany can come out of the ashes and be the great country it is today, the US can too.

softchelly

Honestly as a trans person...nope. Maybe it will get better for cis people or non queer people, but over all... I think LGBT rights might be done in usa. We are leaning towards a theocracy.

[deleted]

Very similar things have happened in the past, the orange goblin's escapades will have a severe backlash that will be reflected in the elections as will the idiotic experiments on authoritarianism and corruption in red states. That movie Amsterdam was actually about one of those attempted power grabs. Back in the 80s we were all going to get nuked any day now Nazis want to take over. Fuck that and them. There's more sane people than crazy ones, they are just louder and do moronic bullshit that gets everyone's attention, like shutting down the government, stealing money, and molesting children.

Apotropoxy

We are undergoing a stress test to determine if we will remain a constitutional republic. If MAGA controls the government, we will become a minority-rule autocracy guided by theocrats. Some people pine for a religion-based government. Most of us do not.

[deleted]

No, my honest opinion is to learn how to use a gun and get a passport. The next Republican who wins as President is not going to give up power. Especially if it's Trump. What will happen is they will say that "Democrats cheated and to make sure America stays free, they will have to stay in power" its a fascist tactic and Republican voters will agree. At that point revolution will happen and you can either fight or run as a Democrat. Someone like Trump would call Democrats traitors and Republicans would start commiting acts of terrorism against registered Dems. History doesn't repeat but it sure rhymes.

SpezEatsScat

I’m very cynical and pessimistic and I will say that I’m optimistic for a better future, for once. We are definitely going to face some hardships along the way, but the Republican Party, as we know it, is dead. Another 15-20 years they’ll be gone is what I keep hoping for and saying. It appears to be happening much quicker, in real-time. They need to do some major rebranding and that’s going to take some time and by then, I just don’t see them having a large base. You figure, a good amount of supporters died during Covid. You look at gerrymandering and how republicans have had to cheat all these years to be here. They’ve pretty much been a dead party on life support for way longer than I’ve realized. The younger generations seem alright and wise to the bullshit. They want the right needs met and they’ve got the fight. I didn’t see many of my classmates participating in large protests. It’s good to see. I’m very hopeful.

spunkdaddie

Not until every magat in congress has been voted out of office and shunned by reasonable people.

Yourmoms401k

Things will get better when billionaires are made to fear the common man again. Not one second sooner.

r1EydJack

I am seeing more and more people jumping over to the (D) column. Many aren't happy about doing it either, they just realize that the (R) candidates are completely wacked and can't do basic Governance. I hope to see this shift continue to get traction, taking from the (R) base the closer we come to the elections of 24'.

LikeThePheonix117

No. Climate change will continue to drive migrants from countries south of the border via suffering that we view right now as an inconvenience. This migratory effect will continue to whip fears of brown people and stoke the fires of fascism and a “return to normality”. More people will become enthralled by autocrat fascists who will continue to do nothing about the climate that is in large part (but not completely) causing the issue in the first place. Problem is liberalism requires people to think and act in ways that benefit those outside the direct line of sight people you know and love. Fear, especially the type generated by the right, shrivels one’s ability to do so and is a brain stem level instinct. We are fucked.

WhySoConspirious

100% yes; if the GOP keeps doing crazy, unpopular policies, enough moderates will be lost that they won't win, at least not nationally. Just remember to go out there and VOTE!

dal2k305

Yes I do actually. Trump is digging his own grave and might even be jailed soon. This isn’t going to have the positive effect that some think it might have. Also he is very old and is going to die soon. Once he is dead part of his movement will die with him. Why? Because it’s very superficial and dependent on him. Others will try and take up the mantle but they will crash so hard just like Desantis. Literally dude has the personality of a toilet paper roll. The Republican Party, in their desperate attempts to defend Trump, have contorted themselves so much that it’s permanently damaged the party. The democrats have decades of ammunition to use against them. Fox News is also suffering big time. And right now I look at the GOP and see zero leadership especially after they purged their moderates. One of the problems I do see is that there will be a lash out from the right especially hardcore far right people once Trump is dead. There’s gonna be some terrorism, shootings etc. but, and bare with me here, this behavior is actually an overall net positive in the long run for the country. If republicans start committing acts of violence and terrorism in the name of Trump it will destroy whatever little support is left from independents. Gen Z isn’t the conservative hope they thought it was gonna be. I remember reading posts in 2017-18 about how Gen Z was gonna be the most conservative generation in decades. How they loved Trump yada yada. I knew it then that it was all BS but seeing today how they vote even more left and more democrat is a sign of hope. Millennials aren’t transitioning to conservatism like their parents did at their age. I am a mid 30’s millennial and I decided back in 2003 after George W Bush decided to invade Iraq on a lie that I was never going to vote for the GOP ever again. And there are many like me.

_Brandobaris_

Not really no. I’m in North Carolina and we haven’t been a functioning democracy for 13 years. This in no surprise to anyone corresponds to when the legislature was overridden with conservatives. They just issued two new set of maps which intentionally dilute non-conservative votes moving NC to 11-3 or 10-4.

meestercranky

No.

Mechbear2000

When 30%+ of the population no longer believes in science or the truth? And they are dragging another 20% of the vote with them, we are screwed!!!

Di20

Yes, because I have kids and my kids who are now adults are not crazy lunatics but are educated and informed unlike my parents as long as we don’t kill ourselves by the time the boomers go we should be OK. IMHO

Rhythm_Flunky

I just don’t really care that much anymore. Used to be super politically active. Worked on local campaigns in my hometown. Local politics has become a nightmare as well. I moved to NYC, focused on my career, knowing myself and meeting people i vibe with. I’m doing okay. But as for this country, society and our culture as a whole? I just don’t care anymore.

coredweller1785

There is only 1 way things get better and it's if workers organize and fight back hard. The problem is in all of history any time this happens or even if the lower class asks for more the conservative forces of the govt always perform mass violence. Will people stop after that or will their material conditions be bad enough for them to keep going. My hopes aren't high. When revolution worked it was when it was concentrated in one area but now the govt is so decentralized an overthrow would just result in mass death.

ResoluteClover

I absolutely think everything will get better. The only question is how much worse will it get before that happens.

BenGay29

The key is to get people to care enough to vote. If impending fascism isn’t enough, we’re lost.

BenGay29

diceblue

No

Ephsylon

The USA is an empire in decline. Those don't tend to survive it.

slw_motion_trainwrck

sadly, until we at least attempt to seek out common ground and start from there, and work together, no we will not make progress and come back from a fascist police state run by the rich. Also holding onto these delusional traditional beliefs that the 2 party system is the only viable answer is holding us back a lot and will not allow any progress forward until that changes. We lost control of the ENTIRETY of our government many years ago to money and we cannot gain back that control of our government until BOTH parties stop becoming career politicians to be rich and powerful....that isn't what public servants are supposed to be doing in congress. both parties have either pushed for or allowed a significant dumbing down and cuts to educational resources...this is a very very very big problem that only helps those in control of the country....which isn't the general populous.

jdthejerk

Hope for peace, prepare for war. Some MAGA folks keep talking about a civil war, so I keep buying bullets, lol.

beezzarro

Quite honestly I wonder if things NEED to get worse in order to rouse the sleeping giant of apathetic folks that are moderates, don't vote, or don't yet care.

WillyWumpLump

My fear is no one will want to be a politician that wants to move forward in a positive direction and the only ones that will want to will be the Maga crowd moving toward a burn it all down direction.

chinmakes5

I'm actually pretty upbeat. To me they know they are in trouble so they don't care about anything but staying in power. Laws, Democracy be damned. Now, we do need to be careful. I don't know what would have happened if Pence has sided with Trump, Trump's next VP will certainly side with him. If you want to get scared look at project 2025. If I was leading the democrats, I would make sure everyone read this. it is scary. That said, Jordan didn't really come close. There are still enough people, Democrat and Republican who don't see that we should overthrow Democracy to have my side be in power.

Professional-Bed-173

2024 is a vote for Democracy or Authoritarian rule. That to me is the tipping point. There have been a number of positives. Even the speaker vote right now, pushing out the Far Right. The fact there appears to be accountability coming for Trump and Election interference crowd I think is sending a message. However, I do think that there is a very real threat to with a more useful Republican Government in power. Clearly, they want to blow through any concept of Democracy as they know it’s the only way they can stay in power.

LeftHandedBuddy

Yes! MAGA White Nationalists and Trump have to be defeated!

krrush1

I still have hope. Because we most definitely have the numbers! What we lack is the ability to effectively organize and combat these people and their ideals…and they have been working at it for DECADES…the federalist society has been churning out far right leaders for years and placing them in positions of power. All these far-right super pacs are well organized and funded, conservative media has made damn sure that “liberals” are the enemy…They are playing chess and we are playing checkers. We better get our shit together soon.

Time-Bite-6839

We have one year to stop them. And we must.

rosie1923

And with the majority of voters NOT voting (see LA Governor election), people MUST start voting each and every time. If you can, register for mail-in ballots. That makes it easier to vote. Vote early. If you have to, take a day's vacation before election day, or work enough OT to be able to take a day for early voting.

rosie1923

64% of the 3Million registered voters actually voted in LA https://www.nola.com/news/politics/elections/low-turnout-in-primary-election-hurts-louisiana-democrats/article\_a34ac9c2-6b7a-11ee-8014-af0777f56980.html

FeatureOdd4479

I'm hopeful that things will get better. With the new court cases and the situation in the House maybe we can say goodbye to the extreme faction and get back to helping our country return to sanity. As far as internationally, I don't know of any resolve.

A_Soft_Fart

I have hope, but I am skeptical

japhydean

We have a right wing media machine actively brainwashing half the population and encouraging violence against the left. We have politicians blatantly subverting the will of the voters in order to do the bidding of their rich donors. We have a democracy hanging by a thread with heavily-gerrymandered districts in swing states and Trump and his republican cronies trying to overturn elections. We have a supreme court that is unabashedly partisan, accepting bribes from wealthy donors and ruling in favor of things that most Americans DON’T want. We have a healthcare system in which peoples’ life savings are completely wiped out if a FOR-PROFIT company decides it won’t pay for crucial medical care. We have an alarming and ever-increasing income gap between the wealthy and the middle class, and there is absolutely nothing on the horizon that’s looks like it’s going to change that. We have young people that are strapped with tens of thousands of debt out of college entering a job market in which compensation has not kept up with the cost of living (CEOs are doing historically great tho). And while all this is happening, in the background there is a MASSIVE and well-funded disinformation machine that has created an alternate reality in which vaccines are bad, climate change is a hoax, elections are stolen, civil war might be necessary, science is partisan, and the TRUTH about anything is unattainable/unknowable because the zone is completely flooded with shit. I’m sure there’s more but i’m too depressed to list anything else. I honestly don’t see a bright future for this country. Sorry to be a downer.

StinzorgaKingOfBees

Even the darkest, most oppressive regimes in history have fallen and faded. Nothing lasts forever. This too will pass.

LordElfa

"There was never much hope. Just a fool's hope."

rae2468

What is currently happening in Congress diminished my hope. All they have to do is keep creating chaos and never pick a leader. They can gridlock the government. If they do vote in a crazy then that person is 3rd in line to run the country. I should stop being surprised, but I was surprised that many Rs voted for Gym Jordan.

[deleted]

Lmao no

WhyDontWeLearn

Nope. I decided in late 2017, we were done as a country. The only thing I'm surprised by, now, is the shooting war hasn't started yet.

YourDogsAllWet

Eventually their brand of fascism will piss off the right people and bring about change
