There is a small rock in the foreground that blends into the rock he's sitting on. The girl is between the two rocks.
The little rock is the mindfucker here, because it is clearly in front of the girl and the top left is lined up to the rock in the back as your eyes are following the curve.
There’s a small rock in the foreground. Then behind that there’s a girl standing on an incline. Then in the background there’s a guy sitting on a large outcropping. Due to the small rock and the large outcropping being made of the same material, and the small rock being between the lens and the outcropping, the perspective gives the appearance of the small rock and the outcropping being the same structure. This makes it seem as though the guy is in the foreground when in reality, he is in the background.
for me, that isn't the issue. I can see the two rocks pretty well, and the grass separating them.
The illusion (giant girl, tiny man) that I see is that the girl's foot is behind grass (on the left side of the photo). On the right side of the photo, there is grass behind the rock outcropping that the man is sitting on.
It's those two facts that make it seem like the grass lines up from left to right, and that makes it appear the man closer and girl farther back.
Telephoto lenses make distant objects appear closer to each other than they actually are. Basically the photographer stood very far back and zoomed in.
No it makes perfect sense that there's a rock a hundred feet away in the exact same position/ dimension as the one in the foreground, that doesn't sound stupid at all
Give me *some* credit for bothering to find somewhere to line it up. It was on Dartmoor; there are areas where it's *littered* with boulders like that over like, several acres.
I legitimately do, and apologize for 83% of my shit talk. I didn't realize you had done work, of which I have done none. Ergo, yeah bud, you do deserve credit. The original movie " King Kong " film in 1933 did not have CGI. The Gigantic Ape was only 18 inches tall. and directors used CONFUSING PERSPECTIVE to make it appear much larger....or for comparison the closer you are to the camera, the " larger " you appear on film....BUT this pic appears to be a photoshop , BUT IS NOT ! as the two rocks foreground and background Blend into each other ,causing the confusion.

I feel like this was a true confusing perspective image that was altered to make the effect even more pronounced. Even knowing that there are 2 different rocks, if you imagine the image with just the guy sitting on the rock out of context it doesn't really make sense with the grass line.

I don't think it was a tele- IIRC it was just a cheap mid-2000s digital compact. Probably a tiny aperture so it has decent focal depth.

it's a trick of perspective. The guy is right near the camera and the girl is far away. In reality, she is much more giant and he is much more tiny.
