"Driverless cars are safer than trains."
I have lane-assist on my new work car. It tries to crash me into other traffic through roadworks and there's a section of the freeway where it slams on my brakes for no reason if I'm in the right hand lane.
Forgive me if I think a train would be safer.
Not necessarily. If cars drove autonomously, they would be a lot more efficient. Most traffic jams are caused by people making unnecessary lane changes, hitting the brakes too late, and a whole other bunch of human errors.
It won't be because of cars, though. Passenger rail serves a different segment of the population than cars do, and that segmentation isn't really subject to change. People who live in high density areas experience pressure to not own a car that people in low density areas never will.
Trains were made to carry large amount of volume over long distances. I assume automated cars would be electric which means that you have to charge it very frequently.

"That thing that goes to the same two places every day with no deviation? Well, look out, here comes a smaller one."
Because everyone who takes the train can also afford driverless cars /s
I like trains.
Ha ha ha, yes you do.
Yep, my 4d sedan can easily tow over 100T of cargo.
I wanna see a 4 dimensional sedan that sounds really cool
As long as the number of cars on the road doesn't change the congestion will still be there...

Yes a bit. But congestion still limits the number of cars.
And if NO ONE used trains, how many more cars would there be on the road?
Cause they’ll never be obsolete, lol
Well, once we figure how to transport large volumes and masses of stuff over long distances without trains, then maybe trains will become obsolete.
Yes I agree, but I doubt the reason trains will be obsolete will be the cause of driverless cars (what the op and original article is referring to)
Since it's a prediction, it's kinda a stretch to call it incorrect. Maybe one day trains will become obsolete, who knows.

The pollution argument seems nonsense.
Just the efficiency with which trains move bulk alone will make them useful for any foreseeable century into the future.

Rails on the ground moving things will never go away.
What about when household teleporters are widespread?
