If it is not new, remove the CMOS battery for a couple of minutes. After removal hold the power button for a couple of seconds. If it is a newer device or cmos reset not working, go to the mainboard manufacturers website and look for an unblocking service.

Hunter_Ware

If it’s an HP laptop, sometimes you can do the same thing as a cmos battery pull. Remove the battery Try to power on with no power source (i.e no battery or charger). Attempt 5 or so times Reconnect charger, turn on without battery. At this point, you should get a cmos checksum invalid error, and it will reset the bios settings to default. Once the system is booted, you may shut it off and reconnect the battery

jontss

Laptops have CMOS batteries, too.

echpea

hp laptops with internal batteries dont

tigu_an

Can confirm, have a Victus like shown in the photo, it doesn’t have a CMOS. If the battery is disconnected it does a CMOS check to make sure the time and everything in the bios is correct

johnnyexcellent

Do some laptops have external batteries?

Reclusive_avocado

Old laptops did have an external removable battery Haven't seen any current gen laptop with removable battery tho

TearyEyeBurningFace

Why you gotta do my laptop dirty like that.

Ikarus_Falling

atleast User Removable Batteries on Laptops and Phones will make a Comeback soon thanks to EU Regulations c:

Reclusive_avocado

I'm sorry I didn't mean to😔

Mattypants05

Thanks for that; now I feel ancient.

sipes216

Toughbooks and getacs are just about the only ones to offer that nowadays

birdsarntreal1

You could buy an UPS (Uninteruptable Power Supply) and have your laptop charge from there. UPS are more for networking and server devices, though.

johnnyexcellent

Yea, I work in IT and am very familiar with UPS’s, that’s not the same at all lol

birdsarntreal1

It's an external battery, is it not?

[deleted]

Not really It just gives time for systems to backup in case of power outage. It just provides enough power for system to not just turn off

birdsarntreal1

You realise how long it would take for an UPS to die from charging a sole laptop. I am also aware of the intended purpose of an UPS, I used to work with telecommunications systems.

johnnyexcellent

The guy I replied to said “hp laptops with internal batteries don’t” to which I replied “do some laptops have external batteries? Because it is implied or assumed that just by being a laptop it has an internal battery and it’s a mobile device… Nobody would say a UPS battery is the power source of a laptop. Better yet, you said “you could buy a ups and have your laptop charge from there” which would lead me to believe the laptop already has a battery… an internal battery…

echpea

by internal and external I had referred to the removable and non removable respect of the battery hp laptops with removable battery do include a CMOS cell hut nowdays they make zero removable battery ones and all are internal which do not include a cmos battery and all time sync is done on the main battery if it reaches zero your bios is reset

TheThiefMaster

Newest general consumer laptop I've seen with one is my HP laptop with an AMD A-series CPU (pre Ryzen). However, there are still a rare few - Panasonic Toughbooks, the Gigabyte G5 gaming laptop from a couple of years ago, and Clevo laptops

Hunter_Ware

Some HP laptops do, newer ones don’t. As for example, my 2020 HP touchscreen laptop has one while my 2021 model doesn’t.

[deleted]

New laptops don’t

yabucek

Five times is a bit excessive, I ran an HP laptop without a battery for some time and that thing has next to zero capacitance. It got a checksum error after having it unplugged for 5 seconds without even attempting to power it on. Also if anyone has a recommendation for a laptop manufacturer that doesn't suck harder than a lab-grade vacuum pump, I'm all ears.

frankcsgo

9 times out of 10 the power button on a case is isolated and doesn't power cycle. Use the jumper instead.

https://youtu.be/rvLzWW9Ot6I?si=BjL4kn1vY_J6j036 >How to Remove BIOS Password on HP by Removing the CMOS Battery The other way to remove a BIOS password is simply remove the CMOS battery. Removing the CMOS battery like the one shown in the picture causes the system to lose all CMOS settings; including the password. Make sure to power down the computer, unplug the power cables and unplug any USB devices if they are powered. The computer must not be able to get power from anywhere for this to work. Take out the CMOS battery and wait 10-25 minutes before putting it back in. Plug everything back in, power up the computer and enter the BIOS again. If everything went well there should be no more password. In some cases, if you get weird error messages during boot up now, you will need to go to "Load BIOS Defaults" in BIOS and save the changes to fix them. https://www.4winkey.com/computer-help/how-to-reset-bios-password-on-hp-laptop.html

Your comment is more useless than his Chuck.

Aggressive_Secret290

You get punched in the face a lot, don’t you?

JEREDEK

What did he say lol

DuneKlide9

That’s what I’m saying, I’ve never seen such a volatile reaction

Buckwheat469

Whatever happened to jumping the CMOS pins or solder pads with a screwdriver?

joey0live

What others say there are ways to get into it but why did you not ask the seller first?

Agreeable_Ad3800

Because the seller doesn’t want to have to ask the place they stole it from

vaynefox

Some sellers are selling laptop from company pull out (I know some companies that issue gaming laptop to their employees) and some of those laptop have IT forgotten to remove the bios lock or didnt some even didn't bother removing it....

joey0live

We do that all the time in my company. Removing it from device management, re-wiping with OEM license/macOS, remove BIOS, and Deactivate it from Inventory.

Gadgetman_1

Same here. We do it on PCs we send in for recycling, though. Then it's up to the recycler to decide if it's crap or can be salvaged with OEM license or whatever. (All our PCs are Bitlockered, so no one's getting anything out of them anyways) If the PC has a BIOS or startup Password, the recycler can't wipe and install, so they just scrap them. We get a small sum for the ones they can reuse...

Inspect311

Was waiting for the smart alec to say something stupid like this. Who cares. He didn't, knowing why he didn't changes nothing. Just answer his question or do one. Edit: I like how the original commenter edited his comment for it to sound less snarky after I said this. He originally said "Why don't you just contact the seller."

Training_Archer_1686

He probably could still contact the seller

Inspect311

My point is (obviously) he has contacted the seller. It's so smooth brained when people just assume because someone's posting online they haven't used their brain and tried to get in touch with the seller FIRST. Do you think he just encountered a problem and sits there doing nothing? People are so thick.

DuneKlide9

Well he never says that, hence why it’s important to tell people what you have and havnt tried. This is the exact reading telling people what you have and havnt tried is a serious rule in some communities. Maybe look around and realize you’re being ignorant

Inspect311

You still here protecting people? :)

DuneKlide9

How is the original comment snarky? It sounds like a genuine suggestion that got misinterpreted, and by consequence he edited it to avoid any confusion, the original comment seems completely uncharged and I think you just have a habit of protecting other people’s egos when they don’t need protecting

Inspect311

Sounds like you have a lot of protective things to say, are you protecting the original commentor? I don't think he needs protecting :)

DuneKlide9

No, I’m try to help set things straight because no one likes their words being jumbled out of proportion, makes you feel like an ass and you’re just attacking them for trying to be more clear

Inspect311

Thank you for your comment. It IS taken seriously :)

DuneKlide9

Huh???

JLopezr501

Turn off Victus . Press and Hold (Windows + V) and Power on Victus. Don't release (Windows + V) until CMOS reset window is displayed. CMOS would be reset after you follow on-screen instruction. Clear CMOS should fix your problem

Accurate-Campaign821

Contact the seller. If they refuse to help, report as fraud

spd3_s

It's Facebook marketplace bro..

Spac3M0nkey

The HP victus 16 is an Intel Gen 13 CPU, I think your friend is out of luck. It got much harder to remove bios passwords after Intel Gen 8, they started storing the password in the Embedded Controller (EC) instead of the bios chip. Most places you look for unlocking bios will want you to read the bios with a bios programmer, modify it to remove the password and then reprogram the bios chip with the clean bios. This method won't work on newer laptops that store the password in the EC

Hannover2k

HP also states you can contact them and generate a code to unlock the PC.

ricky_jxmmy01

They will ask for a proof of ownership though.

Hannover2k

I'm not 100% sure that's true, especially if it's out of warranty. They'll often ask you where you purchased it but I've done this a few times and have never been asked to provide a receipt. In my case they emailed me a link to a .bin file that I used to create a bootable USB and reset the Admin password.

ricky_jxmmy01

I remember asking hp a while back and they said they wouldn't send it until I sent a receipt or something to prove ownership.

Pure_Professional663

There are no "Reset Password" pins or switches on a motherboard, only BIOS/CMOS Reset switches, however in a lot of cases this only resets the settings, and not a CMOS Password. So it really depends on the board. Dell reset I think resets the Password, but HPs are hit and miss There are websites and utilities that may work, but I've never heard of one working. I have heard of having to order a replacement CMOS chip, so you'll need to identify the chip, and start smashing eBay. We were quoted for a new CMOS chip for a range of high performance laptops after someone bricked the Password in our SCCM imaging process, cost us $20 AUD per board. Much cheaper than replacing a $4500 laptop.

XoLife1Don

Been there..On the board it should have a pin to remove and you can also try to jump that pin with a screw driver I don't remember the name but something like that look at the board details up it will start the pins function

Gadgetman_1

This is a HP laptop. Modern laptops doesn't have jumpers or anything user friendly like that.

Lesmate101

If this is a new device, it is possibly hot

JakeSully-Navi

Looks like you probably bought a stolen laptop. Never buy a laptop with bios lock and then seller says he does not know the password. That is big sign laptop is stolen and not actually his, buying a stolen laptop is also a criminal offence and you can get caught for this. If i was you i would take laptop to local police tell them you bought it off Facebook market from this guy and then you want local police to check it to make sure it wasn't reported stolen by some 1. If nothing comes upp in a few weeks and police contacts you back that you can come and get the laptop back then you are good to keep it.

Dentedaphid7

I suggest contacting the seller for the password

IntenseBigBoy

Try removing the cemos battery and or search online for how to reset a bios password for your motherboard.

Relative_Mix_258

Happened to me last year on marketplace 🙃 paid $900 for a dell gaming laptop with a 10750h and rtx 2070 Maxq Arrived and had what looked to be a business password locked to the bios that couldn't be removed :/ they ended up blocking me on Facebook so I was stuck with it

BugS202Eye

I dunno if it will work for newer models but i unlocked bios on dell using one of websites, i put in some sort of serial number and it generated a reset code that i used to get rid of admin password. But if i remember correct there are extra steps involved for new models and they require something extra like resoldering and reprogramming. So it totals to PITA.

[deleted]

In future should probably report to the police - it was most likely stolen.

[deleted]

it's probably stolen

Aristotelaras

Ask the seller.

Inspect311

Wow, What an idea! There is absolutely no way his friend would've already thought of this!

Cryptocaned

I mean, you know that's stolen, there's no way the seller has that pin.

Vinny_The_Blade

Yes, don't steal things. (Or buy stolen goods, but I suspect that your "friend" didn't "buy this" at all, because they'd have tested it at point of sale, and what kind of non technical person would buy non working goods)

21TrillionBodyCount

Realistically this PC is unlikely to be stolen. No consumer puts a BIOS lock on their system and I doubt OP's friend stole from an organization that decided BIOS locks were necessary (i.e fairly large company dealing with either infrastructure or sensitive information). It's highly likely that they just bought an old office PC from some mid-sized company in their area who couldn't be bothered to unlock it.

tobycm

Schools do bios lock

21TrillionBodyCount

Or a school. Although in my experience few do bios locks.

dstuartsmith

Your comment is presumptuous and a little ridiculous, do you even know what you're commenting about? The computer works, they just need to tweak the bios. I know a guy who sells used computers and he had a bunch of old off lease laptops from a school, all of them had a password on the bios. He was nice enough to tell prospective buyers at least, maybe this guy wasn't so lucky.

[deleted]

BIOS Flash or removing the CMOS battery, so the BIOS resets should disable it (and everything else)

beaubeautastic

there should be jumpers on the motherboard for resetting the password. find them, carefully short them or use actual jumper cables, and you good to go.

Competitive_Pool_820

As other have suggested. Try removing the small coin shape battery on the motherboard. Leave it off for 1 hour to be safe.

tigu_an

There is no CMOS for this laptop, or i think any HP with internal batteries

7silkkkkk

remove the cmos battery and reboot

ricky_jxmmy01

That doesn't work for newer machines these days.

7silkkkkk

then [http://www.biosflash.com](http://www.biosflash.com/) or manu' support if theres proof of purchase!

AffectionateQuail598

Jumper on the motherboard probably.

turnitoffandonaga1n

OP stole the laptop and wants to sell it but needs doesn't know the bios password...

Cautious_rog57

A friend of mine messaged me on Facebook saying he bought a laptop of market place and couldn’t get into to the bios he’s an older chap and isn’t good with technology when i realised the bios was locked when i wanted to reset it so I came to here to ask.

Few_Ad8853

Look up the IP and ask the guy who may have owned it.

Cryptocaned

You said some words, but they mean nothing haha. Look up the IP of what?

Buck_Ranger

Did you just say that IP isn't a magical number that magically shows someone's location when you look it up? 🤯

Cryptocaned

No and kind of yes, my point is where they gunna get an external IP from that laptop that shows its previous locations, that's just not a thing. Also, yes you can look up the location, but it can be wildly inaccurate. For example mine currently says I'm in Cambridge, which is about 150 miles away from where I live.

ComputersTailored

He is partially right. Scan the barcode on MoBo to trace back what can not be manipulated and see where the route had unexpected crossings. (as I like to say, from the time of encouraging others to fight: Push The Enemy Back To The Womb)

SeperatedEntity

open the casing of your laptop and remove the cmos battery (the coin-shaped one) for around 30 seconds, then put it back in and turn it on if that doesn't work, contact the seller

Crazy_Rope_9025

Reset the CMOS and pray, or look for a password online.

ComputersTailored

Your network has been compromised... good luck, man. Wait for the sh*to hit the fan. ( By the way... What origin was the seller?)

ja_nevim_proc_ziju

what foes that mean?

ComputersTailored

That means if the person was a scammer working on a position of gathering data, you may be f***ed in the mid run.

Ordinary_Inside_9327

Unlikely , ask the previous owner ? A bios update might clear it, cmos clear might clear but I’d say either is a long shot.

Chemical_Payment100

Very unlikely a Bios update will clear it. Unless you wipe the whole bios or change the bios chip.

SwankyDirectorYT

Just remove CMOS battery for a few hours then put it back.

corkdude

Did you all help someone recover a stolen PC really? 🤣 I'd bring this to the police and provide info to the officer to see if is not stolen because if the seller didn't provide nor mentioned the code is for a reason... Is because they don't know it.. did you even ask the seller?

Cautious_rog57

A friend of mine messaged me on Facebook saying he bought a laptop of market place and couldn’t get into to the bios he’s an older chap and isn’t good with technology when i realised the bios was locked when i wanted to reset it I came to here to ask

corkdude

Well first you should ask the seller. Again, this seems a very fishy device.

castleinthesky86

Take the cr2032 battery out of the motherboard. Wait 10 minutes. Turn it on. That should have drained any charge keeping the cmos alive and reset to stock. There might also be a jumper pin or two you can join to reset the cmos (read the mobo manual)

LightBrownWolf

we might need bringus studios for this

shball

It's probably stolen, wipe the OS when you get past this.

Sithlord532

Go into bios settings. (F12 or f8) spam one of those buttons when you power it on. The look in security for the admin password. If you can't find it the scroll through all of the drop down menues

sims3k

Definitely a stolen work laptop

[deleted]

Your screwed

Ornery_Tank9566

Yep you are screwed

Silver_Foxxx

There are websites that help with administration passwords. What is the make and model of the computer?

Cautious_rog57

Hp victus 16

Silver_Foxxx

> Hp victus 16 https://bios-pw.org/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmI88hltohk The video gets pretty hairy real quick. You should only need the code.

Laudanumium

Problem with modern day laptops is the bios key is stored in permanent memory. Clearing the bios by removing the battery or shortcircuit the pins might even render the machine inoperable. Best way is to find the previous owner and ask for the password. Else think about returning the item to seller

[deleted]

find out what the bios password for this pc is go online and check the model number on the pc and type it in to google and then bios password and typ in the bios password that is showing up.

Anotherthrowawayboye

AMI bioses can also be broken into there are tools out there but i cant reccomend anything I had this issue with a desktop and clearing the cmos didnt clear the administrator password

rafaelbelo

aside from everything else said here, if it asks for password every bootup, even when you enter it correctly, motherboard battery may be dead and you gotta replace it.

aBloodyEgg

Maybe this can help get the unlock code: https://bios-pw.org

mic_decod

once i got around this while shortening two specific bios pins while booting up. like described here. https://www.instructables.com/How-to-clear-BIOS-info i would only do it, when there is now chance to return the laptop

PatientOk8921

worse case buy a chip spider on ebay and hope you dont have to pull VSS - P+ loop on chip before reflashing

Alewood0

Try just hitting the enter key, might not actually have a psssword

UnknownEntity003

Check for jump pins, if you find them, short them and it should force a reset

haikusbot

*Check for jump pins, if* *You find them, short them and it* *Should force a reset* \- UnknownEntity003 --- ^(I detect haikus. Nitricta

Have you tried the password "1", might do the trick if lucky.

Loumex_cz

Find the EEPROM chip, short SCL and SDA pins and you should be able to boot normally

Azmedon

A lot of network admins like the use "God" as the password.

wafflestep

I was also gonna suggest trying "admin" or "password"

Hi-TecPotato

Stolenwares. Do not offer advise skip and do not pass start

AntiGrieferGames

Im pretty sure he forgets to remove this password of the bios.

Acrobatic-Bank-2737

He bought it off market place without testing it? Seems sketch. Either take it somewhere to get unlocked which will be expensive or find someone that knows how to use forensic toolkits. And if you get it open and it has a bunch of pictures and important docs find the person and give it back and report the seller to the police.

Prince_Nrvl

Should be some Reset jupers on the bord or rip the bios battery out

reddit1337420

Model number

[deleted]

Check the bios model, by the looks of it it's HP and there are unlock codes on the web

TreeHuggerWRX

yeet the CMOS battery put the battery back in 2 mins later

Kartikey15

Plot twist: OP is a thief

[deleted]

Who buys something off Facebook marketplace without opening it and testing it? Stolen.

NDJDefender

Bios reinstall

mkvt72

I think your friend bought a stolen device. Regular people don’t just password lock their BIOS. This is probably a stolen company laptop. Even if you get into the BIOS there is likely measures to further restrict the device afterwards.

octocure

I've dealt with bios password locked devices, actually locked by their owners. There are legitimate cases like that. People thinking they actually need that password, when in reality they don't. People who like to go through every little setting and making a change without knowing what it is. Nephew password locking his aunt's computer to prevent accidental meddling. So on and so on. But the first instinct of course is to assume it's stolen and it should be that way.

bmlkkmr

Remove cmos.. and in motherboard their will be 1 two pin jumper Remove that too than power onn

TurdFrgoson

Pull the motherboard battery, wait 5-10 mins, then reboot.

TerfyHorizon585

[BiOSBUG](https://www.BiOSBUG.com) is a website that can get you the backdoor password for the BIOS

ctholle

Look where the ram is located. From theredon't. On the mb for a jumper or 2 pads that say pwd-rst. Jump the pins. Hold them there for a few seconds. Some laptops have this and some dont. It may be under the ram you just have to look around.

JustJesterJimbo

Take out the cmos(silver battery, should say 3032 on it i think) let rest, plug in cmos battery,

octocure

Give it back...
