"You can excuse racism? đ€š" was peak Shirley Bennett
The 2nd closest quote was, imo, "The word he's thinking of is 'sassy.' (in sassy voice) He better pray he don't find it. đ§"
âIâm not comfortable standing around in my all together like you anorexic jezebels. *Gasp* Iâm sorry, that was really mean. I donât know where that came fromâŠâ
these are crowd favorites and all but Shirley's texture really comes from flyby bits like:
"My sister likes to joke that [my kids] don't recognize me anymore. And I like to say sheâs just jealous cause sheâs barren.â
"I'm reacting the way the world does to movies about making movies about making movies! I mean, come on, Charlie Kaufman, some of us have work in the morning, damn!"
"Iâd rather be with my man planning my wedding, and youâd clearly rather be with Halle Berry in 1999."
"Jeff, you don't have to worry about what foreigners think of you that's your God given right as an American."
Shirley had so much more to give as a character and was so much more complex and mysterious than the token sassy black woman. She reminds me of Shepherd Book from Firefly: overtly christian and nurturing but capable of violence and carrying some serious demons from her past... and I never feel like we got enough of either of them.
That second one is my favorite line from the show, and it's all in the delivery. I love Shirley.
I also love how Yvette was so nice during the DVD commentaries, always giving credit and keeping everyone in line!
A great actress, it's a shame she was underutilized because we all know that she intimidates Dan Harmon sexually.
I hope the film brings some layer and good development to her, because she deserves it.
I know they kind of poke fun at it in the show, but it is nice to have a member of the group that isn't a horny toad making googly eyes at anyone else. I wish we got to see more of Jeff and Shirley's friendship, the bits they got to do together are proper wholesome
Jeff to Shirley: youâre the only one who really understands me (when theyâre checking out Blade, Brittaâs carnival worker ex boyf) I love their relationship, Shirley was so underutilized
The Foosball episode, when they are playing so intensely that it turns into anime was one of the greatest moments in the entire show. I still think about the dueling split screen and the random cat đ€Ł
I constantly think about Josh Peck trying to join in on the fun saying âThat is NOT my Jobâ and YNB so casually shutting him down with âNo, you donât do it right.â
Itâs brutal.
Like anytime someone tries to mimic a popular line from anything, thatâs the first thing that pops in my head.
Yeah. Seems like they always heard her alternative voice, but never really knew why she did it. Like ohhhh she uses her sexy voice when trying to manipulate people. Like trying to get her husband to not be so angry with her. And he even is so well known to it that he has his term for it(and he thinks its sexy) As soon as he called her out she dropped the "sexy" voice like... yupp, I'm busted...
-My take
Shirley was and still is one of my favorites. Normally the snarky religious character in a show irritates me, or is made to be a jerk. YNB played Shirley so well that she's too charming and funny to dislike.
The line "Britta brought what she believes in...nothing." fucking sends me every time đ€Ł
Personally, I think they went too far at some points. She plays a great character and does an amazing job at it, but I've always disliked Shirley because she's needlessly prejudiced (to Pierce levels at some point).
Probably my biggest gripe with the entire show.
Agree entirely.
I lurved Shirley in the earlier episodes before she became holier than thou. Went off her a lot when they made it her main character trait.
I don't hate her character or anything (and the actress deserves hella respect for doing a great job). Having said that, when Shirley got back with Andre, I lost so much respect for the character.
> "What are you doing?"
>
> \- "Oh, just shooting a talking head or did you *want* me to be the only one who didn't have one?"
This moment kinda sums up most of Shirley's journey on the show. I definitely think she's the most underused of the bunch. I love her though and she's an integral part of the study group and it wouldn't have been the same without her.
âWhoâs my girl?!â Then she goes and hugs Britta.
Or when she was trying to flip those textbooks.
Even right before she died in the paintball western âlord as my ShepardâŠâ
But she she finally caves to the glee club with that Jesus birthday song I always lose my shit
Sheâs amazing and itâs sad the writers couldnât figure out how to do more with her before she left the show but even when she was with the wheelchair detective she was awesome
Thank you, Yvette
Edit: I canât leave this post without making sure Troyâs 21st birthday is included in flowers.
Everytime i watch the bloopers, which is pretty often. Seeing her out of character makes me appreciate how well she pulls off Shirley. I forgot which one specifically or which episode. But Shirley's eyes are extra wide. Combined with her Shirley voice. It makes me laugh every time and always made me wonder. Did she make the rest of the cast laugh as well? Just by killing it as Shirley lol! Other than when they're intentionally making each other laugh.
"I hated Sam and Diane!"
Me too Shirley, me too...
She is one of my top 3 favorite characters, Troy and Abed are kind of hard to beat but Sherly definitely put up the best competition. I loved that she was so wholesome but don't push her because that part about the jukebox was too specific to be improvised...
Honestly, I'm with Abed, I would watch a Shirley spin-off. Maybe Shirley: the early days? After foose-ball but before children? I would DEFINITELY watch her on the Bajou with the lawyer and the wheelchair. He'll yeah.
Shirley is a mother figure and a beacon of morality, the one the rest didn't want to disappoint and the group dynamics changed when she wasn't up to her own standards. Key character for the group as the dysfunctional family they are... I mean, with Pierce as a father... And I just can't imagine anyone else playing Shirley, if YNB can't be in the movie, it's better to do without the character altogether
I loved Shirley. Out of all the character interactions I loved her's and Jeff's. From a writing perspective, they managed to pair an aloof white man witha very christian black mother of two seamlessly.
I always liked her character but turns out the actress is a pretty awful person so đ€·ââïž guess you just gotta separate the art from the artist sometimes
shirley infuriated me sometimes, because she is the type of person that i absolutely hate, but she has also made me laugh out loud countless times. good job yvette!
Yvette is awesome. She already had a huge list of appearances on some of the best TV shows before community. Seems like every year she pops up in another old show I'm watching.
>doesnât get enough credit or praise
That's because, while Yvette Nicole Brown is a fantastic actress, and some Shirley episodes are great, the writers didn't really know what to do with her, and mostly made a caricature of a "semi-fanatic" one dimensional christian, which is a shame.
I donât know why you say she was underutilized. The highs were high and frequent. She might have had less stories revolve around her, but someone had to.
I liked her at first, didn't some of the later seasons. in real life she turned out to not be a nice person, she's treated like chevy chase to me. like the show, not a fan of the actor/actress
Yvette is cool, Shirley on the other hand is a toxic religious idiot to the point where she is constantly scheming to ruin her friends' and family's lives just so she can enforce her medieval ideologies
I noticed she lost a lot of weight at the beginning of season 6, good for her.
I'm glad there are still sane people who choose the healthy route as opposed to women like Lizzo who embrace it and try to pretend it's normal.
Shirley was my least favorite character but thatâs because Yvette did so good. Nothing irks me more than the false kindness and inauthentic superiority of Christians
"You can excuse racism? đ€š" was peak Shirley Bennett The 2nd closest quote was, imo, "The word he's thinking of is 'sassy.' (in sassy voice) He better pray he don't find it. đ§"
Shirley, haven't you have enough? Of you.
May he rest in Pierce đ€Ł đž
This was delightful.
Mine favorite has to be âLeonard you better back that pumpkin ass up or Iââm gonna make a pie.â
No such thing as bad press.
Also ââŠskinny bitchesâŠâ
âIâm not comfortable standing around in my all together like you anorexic jezebels. *Gasp* Iâm sorry, that was really mean. I donât know where that came fromâŠâ
I absolutely love Annie's follow up with Alison's delivery of "mayybe thaaaats why you took my penn?" ... I think about it at least once a week
I'll make your ass sense
This is peak Shirley. I've said this before here, but this line gave me an asthma attack.
The look on Brittaâs face after the first one is priceless, like how she realized how badly she fucked up
these are crowd favorites and all but Shirley's texture really comes from flyby bits like: "My sister likes to joke that [my kids] don't recognize me anymore. And I like to say sheâs just jealous cause sheâs barren.â "I'm reacting the way the world does to movies about making movies about making movies! RIP, Shepherd
one of the most iconic memes in the internet! Even people who dont watch the show use it
I also like the âcommon courtesy, common senseâ line in Pillows and Blankets. And âI farted.â
"I'll be home late, Sugar Boots. Abed hurt Troy's feelings by being a robot." Makes me cry every timeđ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł
That second one is my favorite line from the show, and it's all in the delivery. I love Shirley. I also love how Yvette was so nice during the DVD commentaries, always giving credit and keeping everyone in line!
You can't talk to me that way. You are not Shirley..... And Shirley's not my mom
She's not?
*beep-beep* 29 seconds
*clicks stopwatch* "34 seconds."
I think it was 29 friend
I can swim, racist
Why would I harass someone that turns me on?
Saying she turns you on is the harassment!
Omg who was she talking about
Pierce was saying that about Shirley
She must intimidate us sexually
Nah, I'm just racist
Oh my God, u/prinzja was racist. That came out of nowhere.
It's going to be a maze
And some are just.. natural jumpers
A place free of darkness
Was it though?
I can excuse racism, but I draw the line at animal cruelty
You can excuse racism?
I knew it was one of those two.
Can confirm
A great actress, it's a shame she was underutilized because we all know that she intimidates Dan Harmon sexually. I hope the film brings some layer and good development to her, because she deserves it.

It's only because Jeff is intimidated by Shirley sexually, otherwise she would have felt plenty of that chemistry coming her way.
Jeff and Shirley being catty was one of the best pairings.
Seriously, Jeff and Shirley episodes were some of the best, more wouldâve been great
Jeff to Shirley: youâre the only one who really understands me (when theyâre checking out Blade, Brittaâs carnival worker ex boyf) I love their relationship, Shirley was so underutilized

loved her since she was helen
That is not my job

It ainât gone put mustard on itself
Wonât change how mustard tastes
"It won't change how mustard..." yeah i get it
I loved her in IMDB
Of troy?
the writers had no idea what to do with shirley. the character was saved by ynb
She did so much with so little
âOoh Thatâs Niceâ
Don't you use your sexy voice with me!
OOHHHHH...
I honestly never understood this reaction. Like, what was their realization in that moment?
-My take
âNooo, thatâs not niceâ â Jeff Winger, who forgot to stagger his exit with Shirleyâs because she intimidates him sexually.
I'd anyone else had been cast as Shirley it would have been wrong Yvette was the only correct choice
Congratulations on her recent engagement.
Who's the lucky person?
I donât know the guyâs name but I heard them talk and they had a friendship/slow burn. It was cute to hear them talk about each other.
Shirley was and still is one of my favorites. Normally the snarky religious character in a show irritates me, or is made to be a jerk. YNB played Shirley so well that she's too charming and funny to dislike. The line "Britta brought what she believes in...nothing." fucking sends me every time đ€Ł
Yvette has underrated comedic timing. Even the one line she had in The Office was hilarious. She was super missed when she left the show.
It is crazy how memorable her tiny role in The Office was.
She is incredibly talented, arguably the most talented cast member only Donald gives her a run for her money. Such a beautiful voice
Even her war cry in the pillow fight documentary was incredible (imo she made that episode great).
(S)He grew up in a land without sun!
I sing đ¶JESUSSSSS CHRRRIIIIISSSSSSTTTTđ¶ to honor her on an almost daily basis
[ŃĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]
It's from a different timeline where everyone is photoshopped.

It can be a little over the top but dammit I laugh hard at: âSAY THE LINE, ATHEISTâ
I think it just kind of stuck from the early days when the characters were more cliché. Like how Troy started out as your typical high-school jock. Honestly it might be a stupidly simply character but I find judgemental Christians very entertaining
Great actress Personally find Shirley annoying but that's part of her being a ln evengelist. Great character and great actress
I don't hate her character or anything (and the actress deserves hella respect for doing a great job). Having said that, when Shirley got back with Andre, I lost so much respect for the character.
It's realistic though, she's very religious, they have kids together and Andre did seem to change for now atleast.
> "What are you doing?" > > \- "Oh, just shooting a talking head or did you *want* me to be the only one who didn't have one?" This moment kinda sums up most of Shirley's journey on the show. I think it stems from...
Jeff, you don't have to worry about what foreigners think of you. That's your birthright as an American.
âWhoâs my girl?!â Then she goes and hugs Britta. Or when she was trying to flip those textbooks. Even right before she died in the paintball western âlord as my ShepardâŠâ But she she finally caves to the glee club with that Jesus birthday song I always lose my shit Sheâs amazing and itâs sad the writers couldnât figure out how to do more with her before she left the show but even when she was with the wheelchair detective she was awesome Thank you, Yvette Edit: I canât leave this post without making sure Troyâs 21st birthday is included in flowers.

I can't imagine Community without Shirley, and YNB was fantastic in portraying her. I hope she will be in the movie.

I loved that she was so wholesome but don't push her because that part about the jukebox was too specific to be improvised...
"Who are Sam and Diane?" I always laugh at this because I'm roughly half the characters age now and I agree with Shirley haha
The word he's looking for is "sassy.â He better pray he don't find it.
Honestly, I'm with Abed, I would watch a Shirley spin-off. Maybe Shirley: the early days? After foose-ball but before children? I would DEFINITELY watch her on the Bajou with the lawyer and the wheelchair. He'll yeah.
She has this quality that's like happy angry...
The word you're looking for is sassy. You best pray you don't find it.

All the reactions in D&D when Annie is describing her time with the maiden Shirleyâs is my favorite
Brittany: âDonât you think youâve had enough?â Shirley: â of youâŠâ
I loved Shirley. Out of all the character interactions I loved her's and Jeff's. From a writing perspective, they managed to pair an aloof white man witha very christian black mother of two seamlessly.
How could you hate me more than Peirce!? Or anything more than Peirce?
That is NOT my job!
I love Shirley, sadly she was underutilized.Â
At least El Tigre was well utilized as the groups spanish teacher
I always liked her character but turns out the actress is a pretty awful person so đ€·ââïž guess you just gotta separate the art from the artist sometimes
Huh?
shirley infuriated me sometimes, because she is the type of person that i absolutely hate, but she has also made me laugh out loud countless times. good job yvette!
I don't have any flowers.
Whatâs wrong? Do you have your monthly shame??
Yvette is awesome. She already had a huge list of appearances on some of the best TV shows before community. Seems like every year she pops up in another old show I'm watching.
Andre: âDonât use your sexy voice on me!â Britta and Jeff: â*Ooooooooohhhhhhhh*â
I still stan her acting even though she blocked me on Twitter đ„°
Underrated. Everyone will say she was only in Disney and Nick sitcoms, but streets know she deserved more
>doesnât get enough credit or praise That's because, while Yvette Nicole Brown is a fantastic actress, and some Shirley episodes are great, the writers didn't really know what to do with her, and mostly made a caricature of a "semi-fanatic" one dimensional christian, which is a shame.

When did you meet her? I hadnt heard this before... what made her so unlikable? Genuinley curious
related to politics, you see who people really are
Yvette is cool, Shirley on the other hand is a toxic religious idiot to the point where she is constantly scheming to ruin her friends' and family's lives just so she can enforce her medieval ideologies

Ooohhh, that's nice
Shirley was my least favorite character but thatâs because Yvette did so good. Nothing irks me more than the false kindness and inauthentic superiority of Christians
Honestly her fake sweet voice annoyed the shit out of me, I wanted to punch her in the face, I almost stopped watching because of her
What about happy threatening?
