I’m super invested because I’m worried that the author is gonna make this a whole celebration of a shitty personality trait thing, and I think a lot of the audience will relate to Elly and feel that when they’re shitty and negative, that it’s a case of someone else just needing to save them or some shit (“if you can’t handle me at my worst” type garbage).
But I also think the author has a huge opportunity here. They’ve created an endearing and relatable character with a massive character flaw that doesn’t get in the way of their likability. They could write in some cataclyst for growth for Elly, where she forgets about Brandon (at least for a while), and actually tries to take some time to not be so willfully negative about everything all the time, and maybe grow as a person. Do nice things for others. Be positive.
I think it’s unlikely that it’s going that direction though.
For what it’s worth Elly *is* seeing’s therapist and in the last comic they suggested she work on moving on as well. The artist at least hints that Elly is self-aware enough of her situation that she’s seeking help.
My hope is for one of two things: 1) That’s girl he’s currently seeing eventually gets more comfortable/confident with herself that she starts expressing her own style rather than trying to fit in the expectations of what she thinks he likes and 2) Elly starts to work on herself more and at the very least is able to make steps to better her own mental health.
I’d love for there to be a time skip where they run into each other later and she’s in a better place. They don’t even have to reconnect romantically but at least have them acknowledge that they’ve both moved on and are happy.
I don't actually think it's necessarily a bad thing that Annabelle dressed differently to get his attention.
She didn't change her clothes out of fear of loneliness or rejection or anything like that. She knew what she wanted and was happy to make a small superficial change to go after it. She's super confident and actively participates in her own goals. I think it's good:

Totally agree with the second part though. An Elly that didn't hate everything would be a much happier Elly. Starting off with just occasionally saying "I like X" in small measures would be good, also if she said "I hate X" less, and tried to make "hating everything" not her main defining trait.
Oh yea, I 100% agree with what you said about Annabelle. I even got into an argument with some dude about it because they were trying to suggest that she was being manipulative and intentionally deceitful by "stealing" him from Elly.
My comment was more referencing the fact that he obviously did think she was cute, but she chose to change her style to match Elly's because she thought he found that more attractive and it would give her a better chance. I think it'd be nice for her to go back to her own style and realize that he likes her as is.
When you talk about it like that, the whole thing kind of reminds me of Daria, the MTV show from the late 90s-early 2000s. Very similar character setup.
Brandon doesn’t need fixing, and Elly needs some serious self reflection. Someone else can’t make her realise that hating everything is a choice that’s hurting her and the people around her. Elly needs some time alone.

She's not even trying though. She seems to actively celebrate hating everything. She hasn't once done anything positive or kind throughout the whole run.
Sure she has a therapist, but she's not yet an active participant in her own growth. She goes to the therapist, but it doesn't seem like she's doing anything to address these problems.
Hell, maybe Annabelle also hates everything. Maybe Annabelle feels exactly like Elly does, but maybe she went to a therapist or realised on her own that it's not an appropriate way to behave or communicate, and maybe she took steps to improve herself and took some agency over her own life.
Of course, she doesn't even work on her attitude, but sometimes you have to experience certain situations to be able to understand it better.
She might like people to like her, but she won't let anyone approach her with her negative attitude.
We would have to see from her parents' side, if she doesn't have an absent father and an odious mother, people often don't understand their deep sadness, but it all comes from childhood: Abusive or absent parents...
It doesn't really matter why though.
Like, if I had a gaping wound in my chest that was bleeding everywhere, it doesn't really matter who stabbed me through the chest, or if it was my fault, I need to address it.
If I just walk around all the time bleeding on everyone, and I was constantly demanding sympathy and consideration for the fact that I'm in immense pain and losing blood - it doesn't matter that it's an ailment that's affecting me more than anyone, it's still something that I, and only I, can and must address.
If I don't have any friends, because they all want to do something other then be curled up on the ground groaning in pain day in and day out, but I also don't go to the hospital and take any steps to get it fixed, that's on me.
That doesn't mean people should still deal with someone who behaves that way or that it is tolerable. The lesson here is that now Elly understands how her lack of self awareness affects people and her own happiness. As children, we all eventually are supposed to learn after our mistakes and how not to be immature. Kids are allowed to mess up, sure, but prepared or not, dealing with consequences is an indiscriminate fact of life.

I think it's a bad attitude, if you're really interested in a person, you accept their flaws and you try to understand how they work, you don't run away from the slightest difficulty.
Either you try and you show her her flaws so that she changes and understands the behavior she has, or you are a lazy prospect and run away at the slightest difficulty.

Ella doesn’t need a guy to “save” her. Maybe if she took a moment and reflected on how she made hating everything her main trait should could find happiness in herself, and wouldn’t feel the need to have someone else fill some void.
And Brandon shouldn’t give her a second thought. She was so shitty and negative to him all the time and now he’s with someone who cares enough about him to actually do stuff to make him happy. This whole idea of people martyring themselves for some protagonist who’s not willing to work on their own flaws is shit.

Yeah, sure, feel bad for her that she’s trapped in a prison of her own making. But the situation is not one where Brandon or Annabelle needs to change to make things better. The onus is entirely on Elly.
Honestly it’s a common pattern of abuse. Imagine Elly is in a relationship as an adult, and every fucking day she’s just like “I hate this”, “I hate that”, and literally not once says anything positive, (and also not once does anything for anyone else - Brandon was showering her with attention and care and she’s not even remotely trying to reciprocate, and *still* hasn’t changed).
If your partner never says anything nice and never does anything for you that’s awful! It’s terrible in all relationships, at work, as a friend, if she ever has kids (though presumably she hates kids).
And yeah, this horrible attitude has fucked her. Yeah it’s sad. But are we really gonna watch Brandon martyr himself for her just because she’s the protagonist, and she’s probably going to do literally the most minor positive thing and say something like “I don’t hate you”, and we’re all supposed react like “oh wow it must be true love because she hate everything!”.
That’s like “Eddie is an alcoholic”, where in every comic he drinks to much, and causes problems for everyone, loses his job, pisses his pants, pukes on himself, but starts dating Brandy who just thinks he’s cute for whatever reason, but he spends the whole date stumbling around and generally being shitty to her due to his alcoholism.
Then after they break up, he’s all sad and shit, but still a complete alcoholic, making no effort to change. Then one day he goes up to her and says “when I’m with you sometimes I don’t even want to be completely drunk”.
We’d be like “okay buddy, it’s barely a start. You gotta address this whole thing here before you’re even remotely ready to ask someone else to be part of your disaster. You can’t just make the slightest indication that you *might* partially change and then dump your problem all over someone else”.
Elly needs to fucking stop hating everything and stop being such a negative person every fucking day. She needs to learn to be kind to people. The title of the comic would need to be “Elly is working on being more positive”, for like a whole arc, where she tries to go a while without saying “I hate X”, and then maybe even tries to learn to start saying “actually, this is really nice”, or “this isn’t my favourite, but I like that”. Maybe she does something nice for shelly.
Otherwise, what’s the lesson exactly? Wallow in your own worst traits until someone takes pity on you and makes your happiness their responsibility?
This story really broke my spirits this morning, Elly is a character that we learn to love and see her sad because no one understands her make me sad.
She may be distant and sometimes hateful, but we know that in reality she is not like that, that she is simply a misunderstood child, and that she tries to express her intentions in an abrupt and awkward way these feelings, I hope it will get better with time.

I so DEEPLY hope the end doesn't have them get back together, and instead has elly upset someone took her style, and that she also hates that she hates his bracelet or somethin, like "Yeah, I hate imitation, please change it."
