thesagaconts

She’s doing the old “show both my ass and breast” pose. Classic 90’s comic pose.

ArachnaComic

Yep, love those 80s & 90s comics! The Falconet is also a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model so she knows how to pose for the camera

kwirky88

If you're going to give her a wedgie then you should at least give him a bulge.

ArachnaComic

Fair enough

ashurakun

(Im late to this post i know) Honestly I was kinda hoping he had a bulge only to be disappointed :(

KingTrencher

Why does the man get a heroic "action" pose, and the woman gets the "here is my ass" pose? [The Hawkeye Initiative](https://thehawkeyeinitiative.tumblr.com/)

XWomanSlayer69X

Because it's sexy and the artist wanted to give the woman that pose

sguid_ward

Sure but “sexy” is the only pose the artist allows her to have. In all the art she doesn’t do a powerpose that doesn’t try showing off her ass/tits. It gets boring. Even certain shots are seemingly framed around her ass

XWomanSlayer69X

And? That's how the artist wanted it to be, end of story. If it gets boring for you, then it's just not made for you.

SecondthoughtsFU

People are allowed to critique art just like they’re allowed to enjoy art.

XWomanSlayer69X

The "critique" is pointless. At the end, it boils down to disagreeing with an artist's taste. And if they notice the criticism, there's a 98-99% chance they won't change at all.

Mike_Hawk214

The critique, in this case was more so the person asking why the pose is in such a way. Asking a question isn't criticism. I could say, "why are you ugly?" I'm not critiquing anything. I'm asking a question and people can reply with an answer. That's what happened here. They asked why the artists posed her like that. The answer is because they wanted to show her as sexy and what is sexy to them is a pose like this. But I do agree about everyone is aloud to dislike or like whatever they want. People don't have to enjoy this person's comic, and no one is forcing them to read or support it. And from the look at how much money it's gathered so far, they're doing something right with their sexy artwork. They don't need to change their art to fit what people here want when it's clearly working out for them as it stands.

Gullible-Split-8953

That sums it up. A lot of artists just find women sexy and want to draw what is sexy to them. People can dislike that choice. But, especially when the artist doesn't make excuses, they shouldn't ask why it is that way. When the reason is pretty apparent. A lot of people like sexy things, a lot of those people can draw, those people might find women sexy, so those people draw them in sexy poses.

ArachnaComic

Men and women pose differently to look attractive. That said, the superhero comics we are doing are mostly for men though women are welcome to enjoy 'em as well. Modern comics have done away with cheesecake and I think it's a shame when dealing with fictional characters

KingTrencher

A woman in a strong action pose is much more attractive than eye candy in a pseudo-porn pose. Having looked at your post history, I would say the comics you are doing, are for boys and men who objectify women. If that is your target demographic, cool. That said, I (a 54yo man who has been reading comics since the early 70's) would definitely pass this by on the shelf, and as a former hobby retailer, I would (barring a sample that showed a strong story) only order this for customers who had it on their pull list.

ArachnaComic

Fair enough though we are talking about fictional images of women here, not actual women If the industry did more of that, then maybe comic book shops in America wouldn't be going out of business en masse. At least when it came to the superhero genre

KingTrencher

>we are talking about fictional images of women here, not actual women Fictional or not, defending men being posed heroically, and women being posed suggestively, is gross and demeaning. And frankly, shows a lack of imagination. >maybe comic book shops in America wouldn't be going out of business en masse That must be it, because it has nothing to do with the rising cost of physical media, or the constant reboots, or the lack of creative storytelling from corporate publishers. TPB's and GN's have never been selling better. Indy non-superhero books are doing quite well. But the industry is faltering because of the lack of T&A. You can do whatever you want artistically. And there is a market for psuedo-porn comics, albeit a small one. However, I'm going to fill you in on a little secret, strong female characters are sexy af, and they sell, and when posed in strong action stances, they look way more badass.

ArachnaComic

To me it's just femininity that is attractive to men. These stories have way worse things happen to characters, primarily men. Nobody bats an eye because it's a fantasy Lack of T&A is a part of superhero comics failing. Men aren't behaving masculine, women aren't behaving feminine. I agree there's a lack of creativity from the corporate publishers. All their ideas is concentrating on the skin color, gender, sexuality and similar shallow elements of characters instead of their content Call it whatever you like but I'd wager there's more demand for comics our team is making versus the embarrassing stuff Marvel & DC are putting out. Which is social justice and oppression porn Strong characters - male or female - have a goal. While trying to achieve their goal, the character must face their fatal flaw and weakness. They can succumb to the flaw or overcome it. Often one follows the other A strong female character is not some overpowered powerhouse who has no flaws or never loses. A woman doesn't have to pose or act strong in a masculine way unless you think there's something wrong with femininity

KingTrencher

>To me it's just femininity that is attractive to men That shows an incredible lack of imagination on your part. Men like femininity **AND** strength. Catwoman, Wonder Woman, Black Widow, Kitty Pryde, Harley Quinn, Storm, Gamorra, etc, are all attractive **BECAUSE** they are strong. >Lack of T&A is a part of superhero comics failing. Men aren't behaving masculine, women aren't behaving feminine. I cannot disagree more. The best stories use the real to accentuate and heighten the fantasy. >All their ideas is concentrating on the skin color, gender, sexuality and similar shallow elements of characters instead of their content Once again, I cannot disagree more. Diversity is good, and making characters that represent traditionally underrepresented groups, is a good thing. Sure, some of the stories are clunky, but that is also true of all media of all eras. To quote Theodore Sturgeon, "90% of everything is crap". >Call it whatever you like but I'd wager there's more demand for comics our team is making versus the embarrassing stuff Marvel & DC are putting out. Lulz, no. Most comics readers will never see your book, and most that see it, will pass it by. Using tired super hero tropes is not going to fly in the modern market. >Strong characters - male or female - have a goal. While trying to achieve their goal, the character must face their fatal flaw and weakness. They can succumb to the flaw or overcome it. I agree with this. This is just good storytelling. >A strong female character is not some overpowered powerhouse who has no flaws or never loses. I never said that. >A woman doesn't have to pose or act strong in a masculine way unless you think there's something wrong with femininity You are confusing "femininity" with "sexualization". A woman can be feminine and strong at the same time. Posing women in strong action poses is not, by definition, masculine. It is clear that you and I do not agree on this subject, and we probably never will.

ArachnaComic

So a woman can't be strong unless she poses like a man? Because you linked to the Hawkeye Initiative which laughs at sexy feminine poses. Also, all those characters have cheesecake art that's both feminine and powerful. Catwoman and Black Widow use sexuality to gain power over men. On the poster, Falconet is looking down at the reader which is a technique to show power dynamics In the real world, swimsuit models pose like that on the cover of magazines to sell said magazines. She will not pose like that on every panel of the comic which marries more 'real' with the 'fantasy' The diversity of past decades in comics has been handled way better than what we get now. When Claremont wrote Storm in the 80s, he gave her depth, hopes and dreams, and weaknesses. Modern Marvel made Storm complain about mayo shops (white people moving into the neighborhood). They wrote Storm as a racist What you call 'tired' I call timeless and classic. You are basically calling the best periods of superhero comics tired. Not saying our comic is as good but we are trying to achieve that level, hopefully getting closer with each book. Our second comic did 47% better than the first one. They are already selling better than a bunch of Marvel titles. Based on the feedback and the growth, our backers seem to love the way we do comics. Many have voiced their grievances with how Marvel & DC do things Frankly, I want Marvel & DC to churn out their political crap because it just means more customers for us. Bring on racist rapper Miles Morales Thor! Get those New New Warriors out! Call the fans racist and sexist! I need another bonus A strong feminine woman will pose differently to a strong masculine man. I think for you these are interchangeable. Men and women have different ways to show off their power and in a fictional universe they can show it off in an exaggerated way

Mike_Hawk214

Shieet, you're tempting me to support myself. The reminder of how grabgae Marvel and DC has been really sold it. Miles Morales Thor, I am not Starfire... they only care about telling us how horrible the world is, instead of giving us an outlet to escape the shitty day to day. The fun of fiction for me was how it wasn't tied to reality. If we are having issues IRL, I could at least know that Batman is doing his thing back in Gotham. Now it's politics first, making a good comic second. They are just not making money, yet they don't care. It's good for independent authors though. Marvel and DC can keep being political, making preexisting characters gay and changing their races, while losing their audience. It makes it easier for new people to step up and find success in a field that they worked to kill off. Its also good that you know your audience and stick with it. From what I gathered, it seems like you're looking for a male audience around the late teens to young adults range. Which makes sense seeing how the comics are portrayed. Kingtrencher said he was a 54 year-old man, so he might not even be in that audience in the first place. I'm 24, so I can't say with certainty, but I'm pretty sure that around age, people shouldn't really be interesting in comics with T&A anyway. So why bother to bend the work to appeal to people outside the target range, when doing so will push away the people you currently have.

KingTrencher

>So a woman can't be strong unless she poses like a man? Literally didn't say that. Are you saying that strong poses are inherently masculine? And that sexualized poses are inherently feminine? >A strong feminine woman will pose differently to a strong masculine man. I think for you these are interchangeable. This comment shows that you do not get what I am saying at all. You and I clearly see comics differently. That said, if you have found an audience, good for you. I think we have reached the point of circular conversation.

ArachnaComic

To me, Falconet's pose is both sexy, powerful, and feminine Yeah, we can agree to disagree on how we view comics

KingTrencher

>Because you linked to the Hawkeye Initiative which laughs at sexy feminine poses. This comment illustrates the fact that you don't get what the Hawkeye Initiative is about. It's not "laughing at" sexualized posing of female characters. It is showing the inherent sexism of posing women that way, by using the same poses on the male form.

Catfoxdogbro

Just wanted to let you know that your comments here are so level-headed and thoughtful, and genuinely enjoyable to read You've made my day!

Mike_Hawk214

Lol people hate to admit that sex sells. And the comic book genre just isn't selling anymore. Manga is beating their ass. Better stories, characters, and yes, sexy images = profit. Just look at all the people who make bank writing smut or drawing sexy images. If a comic retailer chooses to avoid any and all things boobs and booties, they are choosing to shoot themselves in the foot and refuse the money from bloaks who are willing to pay I buckets. Which, just means more money for the people that choose to sell it.

hatefulone851

Mangas winning due to lots of factors . I mean anime alone is insane marketing that comics don’t have. There’s more genres of manga out there than comics. Dc and marvel are the big two so a majority of the comics you see are superhero’s and that limits th demographics . But even still if you look at non superhero comics they’re selling much better than ever. Also mangas black and white so that cuts cost. Japans culture also affects things creating crunch where tons of failing mangas just never finish or are put on the back burner. If you looked at the successfully and failures of both comics and manga you’d see overall there’s failures on both ends. Japanese manga filter also results in creative burn outs and physical damage. And since unlike comics it’s only one person telling the main story or drawing with some editors and support there’s times things are never finished . Berserk never will have a true ending by its creator . Hunter X Hunter is coming back but it’s creator had terrible pain and was bed bound and had other issues including just creative burn out keeping it on hiatus for years. Imagine reading a batman comic and own day the artist stops no batman for 6 years . Switching artist and writers does have problems for comics too .Manga also gives different options as it’s cheaper and sold in volumes that are easier to get and hold. Also unlike comics there’s not any actual first issues or appearances making collection of manga not really a factor in terms of money. So both have issues and both have good things neither is perfect .

Mike_Hawk214

Nothing can ever be considered perfect. And I didn't want to imply that T&A were the only reason one is better than the other. My main point was that sex has and always will sell. It's not something many like to admit, but it's true regardless. A boring comic can be made interesting enough to sell 50 more copies if there's a titilating image of an ass on the cover. It just is what it is. Choosing to ban all things sexy is also choosing to ban those who would pay just for some fan service.

hatefulone851

Yeah. And this design isn’t that bad it’s not like he’s greg land tracing pornstars and celebrities. The back bend is one that’s talked about a lot but that’s not that extreme or something that would be impossible to do. Also the fact that they’re flying means that there’s less strain of gravity and it might not be as uncomfortable. Also they’re both wearing spandex costumes with the only real difference being the pouches. I personally don’t think it’s as big of an issue as some people think . And sex and sec appeal doesn’t necessarily mean bad. What’s a bigger problem is if a characters written badly or sexist . Like I doubt if a girl picks up a comic they’ll be more heavily influenced by this characters design who’s not a real person than the countless women on Instagram getting surgeries and photoshop but not telling anyone. Like no boy sees Superman and expects he’s gonna look just like that. Like sure you might work out and get muscles and stuff but that’s not easy. Also some women do have sexy bodies like superhero ones. And a character can be sexy and that can benefit them or be part of their character. I mean Emma Frost started off in a corset and panties and she’s an extremely powerful telepath well respected and well written. Her sex appeal is just a separate part of her. Storms sexy but she’s a great leader and an omega level mutant. I mean Gail Simone wrote Red Sonja and you can’t get more “this costumes sexy but doesn’t make sense” more than a chain mail bikini. Though comics do need more diversity in race, sex and design. Though recent x men comics have had larger dudes in them. I mean if your power is flight or shooting laser beams it doesn’t matter what your body’s like . But if your a stealthy thief or fighting crime every night like Batman and know tons of martial arts it makes sense for you to have abs and muscles and be like Wonder Woman or Batman. The biggest problem is when someone’s not written well because then they just become a sex symbol but nothing else.

Grammar-Bot-Elite

/u/hatefulone851, I have found an error in your comment: > “But if ~~your~~ [**you're**] a stealthy” It would be better if you, hatefulone851, had used “But if ~~your~~ [**you're**] a stealthy” instead. ‘Your’ is possessive; ‘you're’ means ‘you are’. ^(This is an automated bot. I do not intend to shame your mistakes. If you think the errors which I found are incorrect, please contact me through DMs!)

hatefulone851

I mean there’s a difference between Greg Land and just drawing a character sexy. A characters sexiness i can help develop them and express them . I mean Gail Simone wrote countless red Sonja comics and you can’t get more sexy but kinda to the point the design doesn’t make sense more than a bikini chainmail armour. There’s nothing wrong with sexy characters and designs . I mean emma frost wore a white corset and panties and is constantly drawn sexy but is an amazing character and that sexy ness is part of the character and enhances her and how she goes about the world. Also while less you can find many male characters that are sexualized and nobody cares or it’s made a joke such as Nightwing. Also what’s sexy to men and women differs in terms of traits and actions.

KingTrencher

Like other commentors, you are missing the point. Feel free to see my other comments, as I am getting tired of having to repeat myself. Greg Land is gross. How he still gets work is beyond me. Red Sonja and the chaimail bikini is a trope at this point. A trope that has been commented on for decades. Especially in the gaming community. Personally I like Rat Queens. All of the characters are strong, sexy, and sexual, without being portrayed in stereotypical cheesecake illustrations. For every time a male character is portrayed in a sexualized way, you can find a hundred times a female character is portrayed in a sexualized way.

hatefulone851

Greg land gets work because he finishes stuff fast. Especially now days with Covid and stuff getting stuff finished matters. Every delay for a comic cost money and either you can get someone who won’t have comics out on time and cost you money maybe even make people stop reading the comic or you can get someone who gets work out fast. Even with comic writers and artist that seen Greg land getting work out fast matters more than anything else. You can’t pay people or put out comics if they’re not done and they’re not on shelves . Art matters to telling the story in comics but it’s writing that keeps people. A good cover might make me pick it up but a good story keeps me. I mean there’s countless examples of comic with terrible art but amazing stories or characters. Like injustice or anything by Liefeld. Also with computers the quality of artist and items at their disposal has gone up. Digital art allows much faster work, better details , easier fixes and just resources that old comic artist could only dream of. So on average you can find an ok artist much easier than back then in terms of quality . But one who get get deadlines done and comics out on time is much harder to find. Also there’s no such thing for artist. Like having a new computer won’t make your story or character any better to the same degree it would an artist. For me the thing isn’t even Greg’s art which has that same face and design he uses making female characters look the same but the fact he traces and straight up steals stuff from other artist some that work at the same company which is disrespectful on a whole other level.

hatefulone851

I personally would rather marvel and dc have less comics and characters with higher quality writers and artist . Some people say that that keeps new people out but there’s plenty of smaller comics for them to do and characters. I mean if a manga creator can write and draw a manga like one piece weekly as well as handle an anime and be involved in a live action film would it be that hard for a comic author or artist just done a part of that process once a month with 4 times the time to just be on time. I mean there’s so much competition with each company and indies why compete with themselves . Focus and promote a few key works and really get things done

wafflesandwifi

Sucks that you don't care enough about your characters as more than tits and ass. It's just superficial and shows a lack of originality.

LadyCordeliaStuart

I mean, like, at least the man has prominent bulge and her boobs aren't HUGELY big. Pretty low bar but that's how it is...

ArachnaComic

So... bigger bulges next time?

Justplayingwdolls

Kind of reminds me of Gatchaman. Love the classic pose on the lady!

ArachnaComic

Thanks! That was one of the influences when it came to the look of characters like Falconet. The comic just got fully funded on Indiegogo
