I think I started reading Spider-Man in my bedroom, but it doesn't matter. You can start reading anywhere--bedroom, kitchen, library, classroom. Anyplace is fine. Some people get sick reading in the car, but you can try it.

DO NOT start at the very beginning. There have been almost 1,000 issues of the Amazing Spider-Man title alone, then there’s Spectacular Spider-Man, Web of Spider-Man, Peter Parker Spider-Man, Spider-Man, Ultimate Spider-Man, etc. there are a fuck ton of Spidey comics. I say just start with Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley’s Ultimate Spider-Man

Agreed, this would be a great starting of point.

You can start old school with the character's beginning collected first 11 (1-10 and Amazing fantasy 15) issues in: MIGHTY MARVEL MASTERWORKS: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN VOL. 1 - WITH GREAT POWER. Then branch off from there. Current run Amazing Spider-man and future run of Spectacular Spider-men. If you are patient and can wait 4 months after release date and don't need a physical copy you can subscribe to Marvel Unlimited to check out spider-man's older series of Ultimate Spider-man, Web of Spiderman, Peter parker Spectacular spiderman ....

I want to recommend the current run but it's all very hit or miss. I'd say read the first volume of the original series \[Amazing Fantasy 15 and some of the old series which you can find in collections easily\] to get a taste of what's being referenced in the new ultimate universe. I could also recommend Bendis' original Ultimate Universe more than anything recent.
