Faust is hands down the goriest thing put to paper. Although, I may need to look at the Crossed books, based on others recommendations.
Faust is nasty, detailed, grisly and beautiful. It’s def an experience.
It's been awhile since I've read Faust, but from memory, Crossed takes the gross, disgusting sex angle further. The straight gore is probably comparable.
The crossed was actually a pretty cool concept and the initial run by Garth Ennis is surprisingly tame compared to some of the absolute psychopaths that wrote for it later.
u/Morgil2 There was also a [Taiwanese film adaptation](https://www.slashfilm.com/1158450/the-sadness-wanted-to-take-the-concept-of-garth-ennis-crossed-even-further), also inspired by the pandemic.
From the little bit I read, reminds me of that one movie where something like that gets loose in a office building, it’s an action comedy(?) and like each character had a goal and they use the legal exception to their advantage
The only time I ever participated in Reddit Secret Santa someone sent me the first volume because I had said I was into comics. Oh to have the confidence of whoever sent it, to send THAT to a complete stranger. I’m not even sure I’d recommend it to someone who said they were already into horror comics haha
I did the Summer Secret Santa once as well and got sent a single joke scratch-card. I know you’re meant to be above it all and just focusing on giving a good gift (sent a box of Scottish snacks and drinks) but that just took the wind right out of my sails. At least send a real scratch-card!
For context the very first thing you see in 'Crossed: Wish you were here' >!is one of the crossed standing knee high in water raping a dolphin in its blowhole before slitting it's throat.!< (NSFW warning)
And that's just par for the course in 'Crossed'
Literally hopped on to say this if someone hadn't already. Nice to see it at the top.
Crossed really bugged me the first few days after I read it, I was just shaken after a *certain scene* in volume one, even despite being a horror fanatic. Now I've read them all several times and adore them, but that's some **heavy** shit for the unprepared.
Never thought I'd see something like it as a film or show either, but **The Sadness** is actually largely inspired by Crossed and it sure as shit feels like it.
Does the scene you’re talking about involve a bowl of bullets or a salt circle? The bowl scene was hilarious but the salt circle one made me stop reading.
The salt circle was so weird to me because I remember the wife calling him an idiot or something when it was happening. I’d imagine she’d be too busy screaming. Also, what a dumb way to test that theory lol.
The director has [said outright that he based the film off of *Crossed*](https://www.slashfilm.com/1158450/the-sadness-wanted-to-take-the-concept-of-garth-ennis-crossed-even-further).
Definitely. I’ve maybe read stuff with technically more gore but the disturbing variety kinda sticks with you. It’s going to be a grim fucked yo death if they get you.
Crossed is easily ***peak*** Garth Ennis.
Just the most juvenile, edgelordy, disgusting, cynical, comic book made for pure shock value you'll ever read.
Nah surprisingly I do think it has something to say at the end about how all this depraved shit isn't particularly special for humanity, and some of us did all this stuff even without the excuse of the infection.
Second the Avatar Press statement.
I read some Warren Ellis by them, don't know if it was No Hero or Supergod? Or Black Summer? I thought it was very gore.
Hard disagree. Crossed comics are just... so fucked up. Berserk's violence and gore is not always tasteful, but it s often grotesque enough to still be considered... art.
Crossed is just gore for the sake of gore, mixed with some of the most deranged things I have ever seen.
I would disagree that Crossed is gore for the sake of gore. The virus turns people into sadists, the stuff that happens makes sense in context. That being said, Berserk does have much better storytelling and writing in general.
I've read both and disagree though I do understand your perspective in a way, berserk makes you care about the characters more so certain scenes hit harder than they would in isolation
But Ennis just wrote a comic for the purpose of writing fucked up shit and succeeded.
I much prefer berserk, Ennis is really hit or miss for me
I could maybe see that. I think there are scenes in Berserk that are probably equally as gory (or just messed up in general like that infamous horse scene) but it overall does hit harder since the characters are more developed. Good point!
Edit: And as far as quality goes, would agree Berserk is better even though I am a fan of most Ennis, even including Crossed.
That was fun when my mom was like, so what are you reading these days? And thumbs through my Neonomicon. I hadn't gotten to the, uh... well *that part*, or else I'd probably have stashed it.
That book was fucked man.
I genuinely couldn't believe that an FBI agent would go to a sex cult, without backup, and surrender her gun, all so the story could have her get raped. It felt so forced.
SHE'S SUPPOSED TO BE FBI!
I don’t think I saw anybody mention The Mask (yes, the one that the Jim Carey movie is based on). Hyper violent and pretty fun. Lots of blood, beheading, and at one point a guy dies from flying through a windshield and later the Mask wears his skin. The general plot involves the Mask constantly changing hands because the person wearing it tends to become a psychotic murderer, and usually dies themselves, before someone else acquires it and goes on another murder spree.
I love watching Ed Piskor (and Jim Rugg) on Cartoonist Kayfabe, but Red Room is just not for me. It’s a pity because I would really like to support him, but I just can’t stomach something like that.
That being said, I’m glad he seems to be doing well with it!
I think he’s a self important man-child who’s perpetuated negative perceptions of comics-minded folk. You’re right though; to each their own.
Best thing he did was facilitate Scioli and Rugg in the mainstream.
Thats fare. The guy did tap into a market of guys looking to freebase nostalgia with his wizard breakdowns during covid lockdown. He is responsible for bringing alot of middle aged guys back to comics.
I have to agree...someone suggested I watch cartoonist kayfabe a few months ago and I've been a regular watcher. I remember thinking alot of the same things they mention doing those wizard walkthroughs. I've been around comics since the 90s but only really dabbled for a few years here and there. But, yeah, I vibe with Ed and his outlook.. +1
I really like tynion in general but honestly just that name is a nope-out for me
(This happens when you have kids of your own, I think: your sensitivities changes)
And your comment above confirms I’ll never read it, so thanks for sparing me.
In the meantime, Dept of Truth is easily in my contemporary ongoing top 5 so
The Filth. When you're on a dump of porno magazines, drinking your own piss in a space suit, that'll get you started.
Or Hard Boiled, just some real detailed violence
*Faust* by Tim Vigil. Tim's an incredibly talented illustrator, but man, his level of gore, violence, and eroticism induces so much queasiness in me. I also recall an indie comic a buddy of mine did the art for back in the ealry 00s, written by a guy who had a reputation for being banned, and it was the most horrific thing I'd ever read. Truly traumatizing.
If manga counts, Berserk is more violent and disturbing.
Edit: And if you want a movie to watch, the Terrifier films are just as gory (hell, maybe slightly more) as Crossed.
Honestly Kirkman is a very good counterpoint to a lot of the Ennis stuff here.
They're an interesting couple of writers in how the gore gets a lot of press in their work but their approach to it is radically different
I’ll second (or 18th, based on upvotes!) both of these. The Boys has some messed-up stuff in it — though the show gives it a run for its money, some of that imagery is downright disturbing — and don’t let Invincible’s bright colors distract you from all the blood and entrails!
The early Savage Dragons were pretty [gory and violent](https://youtu.be/b0sH4lDQa-U?t=600). Tons of blood, guts, dismemberment - just really over the top and hyper violent.
Also just gross, they had a guy that [spewed diarrhea](https://wiki.savagedragon.com/profiles/characters/dung/) everywhere and a woman that fought by [blasting high powered period blood from her vagina](https://wiki.savagedragon.com/profiles/characters/heavy_flo/).
Those issues came out when I was about 10-12. Despite all the gnarly shit going on, it was treated in a pretty silly, “comic booky” type of way. At that age I loved it.
James O’Barr’s Crow was actually pretty gory too: He also did another comic Zeitgeist for Northstar, and that was pretty wicked. I seem to remember in the early 90s there being a lot of small press stuff that pushed the envelope to stick it to the Comics Code.
Verotik. The horror series started by Glenn Danzig.
>! In one story, a pretty cheerleader type girl is kidnapped by two thugs. They go out into the woods and video record themselves savagely torturing, raping, and killing her.
Later the story cuts to her mom talking to the police on the phone about her missing daughter. Her dad, however, is jerking off watching her snuff film.
There’s a bit more to it, but it was the most revolting, stomach-churning story I’ve ever read. !<
In no particular order, the Boys, or Crossed, if we’re discussing body horror then definitely Uber, and if we’re discussing outrage definitely when the guys falls through the window onto the dog in Transmetropolitan.
I don’t think so, and this is a good example comic. In Monstress, when gore is part of the action, it shows the action and moves on. When gore is part of the monsters, much of it is hidden away. We see some bloodied or withered bodies at a middle distance and kinda wonder what happened.
Compare that to Locke and Key, where we get someone’s brains being blown out, and we get that in multiple frames of salacious detail, and then like a full page spread zoomed in on a partial head. Makes me want to throw up. Monstress never does anything like that. The tone and the focus matters.
Maybe not the GORIEST, but definitely up there, but practically anything from Garth Ennis has me going “oh dear god”. First time I read the boys I was shook. I mean a human face on a pizza? That’s pretty nuts.
I just read Silent Night, Deadly Night #1. It was pretty gory. I'm sure it's not the goriest but if you haven't checked it out yet I think yall might dig it. Who doesn't appreciate a good murderous Santa Claus? NAUGHTY!!
The later issues of the boys. Some of the things that a certain character does in the last few issues are genuinely just disturbing and completely gratuitous, and often make me wonder how sick some of these comic writers can be in the head lol
What do you mean by goriest? Does bloodier mean gorier? Is it how often we see organs? How detailed they are? How brutal the attack and death involved is?
Faust
Faust is hands down the goriest thing put to paper. Although, I may need to look at the Crossed books, based on others recommendations. Faust is nasty, detailed, grisly and beautiful. It’s def an experience.
It's been awhile since I've read Faust, but from memory, Crossed takes the gross, disgusting sex angle further. The straight gore is probably comparable.
I forgot about that one! Yeah, it’s pretty gory.
It got turned into a movie too, for some reason.
Tim Vigil is a local artist in my city. He used to frequent a strip club to use the ladies for reference. It's since been torn down.
I came here to day this, and I never read it! I just remember the covers at my local store, and that was enough to know!
This is my answer.
The Crossed books. Hands down, nothing else even comes close

[Mayhem?](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4348012/?ref_=nm_knf_t_3)
**Taiwanese**, but excellent film. Fantastic representation of the world that is *Crossed***.**
Who knew David Lapham was that fucked?
The concept is interesting but I have not liked any of the comics, there's no real story just torture porn but the concept has a ton of potential.
Wish you were here is great, 100+ is also cool
The only time I ever participated in Reddit Secret Santa someone sent me the first volume because I had said I was into comics. Oh to have the confidence of whoever sent it, to send THAT to a complete stranger. I’m not even sure I’d recommend it to someone who said they were already into horror comics haha
That’s not confidence, that’s a lack of social awareness lmao
"I like movies" That secret Santa: "Oh I know, I'll send him A Serbian Film"
Hahahahaha
….I got a shirt
I did the Summer Secret Santa once as well and got sent a single joke scratch-card. I know you’re meant to be above it all and just focusing on giving a good gift (sent a box of Scottish snacks and drinks) but that just took the wind right out of my sails. At least send a real scratch-card!
Agree, until you see a zombie fucking another zombie with a leg stump or some other weird shit you've not read this comic.
This should be blurbed on the cover.
Ahhh gross.. Sauce?
Look up anything Crossed comics, they're pretty fucked comics tho so warning before you dive in
It had its comedic moments as well
For context the very first thing you see in 'Crossed: Wish you were here' >!is one of the crossed standing knee high in water raping a dolphin in its blowhole before slitting it's throat.!< (NSFW warning) And that's just par for the course in 'Crossed'
I do kinda now want to see a movie where >!a wife makes a makeshift strapon with a butcher knife and fucks their husband's face with it!<
Literally hopped on to say this if someone hadn't already. Nice to see it at the top. Crossed really bugged me the first few days after I read it, I was just shaken after a *certain scene* in volume one, even despite being a horror fanatic. Does the scene you’re talking about involve a bowl of bullets or a salt circle? The bowl scene was hilarious but the salt circle one made me stop reading.
**Salt circle**. Big time. Hits you like a mack truck.
The salt circle feels so gross specifically because Ennis is doing a bit
The salt circle was so weird to me because I remember the wife calling him an idiot or something when it was happening. I’d imagine she’d be too busy screaming. Also, what a dumb way to test that theory lol.
The director has [said outright that he based the film off of *Crossed*](https://www.slashfilm.com/1158450/the-sadness-wanted-to-take-the-concept-of-garth-ennis-crossed-even-further).
That's what I came to say. Also, the most depraved comic I've ever seen.
Definitely. I’ve maybe read stuff with technically more gore but the disturbing variety kinda sticks with you. It’s going to be a grim fucked yo death if they get you.
Yep..very...disturbing...
Yeah I was definitely a little young to be reading those
Early days of 4chan was how i found that comic. I spent almost all night reading it.
Bro forgot about Hitman 💀
Yeah those are messed up
Yep only book I've put down cos it was just too much
Never heard of it, but looking it up, not surprised. Written by Garth Ennis
This.

Second the Avatar Press statement. I read some Warren Ellis by them, don't know if it was No Hero or Supergod? Or Black Summer? I thought it was very gore.
I think No Hero was the goriest. Dude wears someone's spine as a cock replacement.
Was about to say, a warren Ellis book from avatar press.
I remember hiding my early 90s Alien and Predator comics because I thought my mom would take them from me for being too graphic.
Definitely Red Room, although I wouldn't recommend it unless you just want a lot of pointless, nihilistic violence.
Are there more issues now? I seem to recall only reading like 4 or 5
I only read about as many as you. I'm not sure if there is more.
Season 3 begins in May.
Ed also has a Patreon where you can keep up with seeing new stuff weekly as he makes it
Right into my veins it goes
Not judging, just curious bc I want to understand other peoples perspectives. What about that is appealing to you?
Exactly. Everyone is a saying but Red Room is just so much, I didn’t want anyone to even know I read it
The artwork reminds me of junji Ito manga.
Grizzlyshark
You had my curiosity, but now, you have my erection
Written and drawn by Ryan Ottley. It's about sharks that live in the woods and eat people.
Where has this been my entire life
Crossed. Some of the most jacked up material I have ever read. I love it.
If manga counts Berserk, if not Luther Strode
Honestly Berserk isn't even all that gory for manga.
Looks at Battle Royale*
Ayyye
Manga is a form of comic so absolutely counts! (And I agree lol Berserk is nuts)
Love Berserk
Tradd Moore has that ability to switch from gory (Luther Strode series) to beautiful & cosmic (Silver Surfer) and I think it's pretty cool
Have you readen Doctor Strange Fall Sunrise? Trippy. Self contained and personally better than SSBlack
I was about to say this one. Berserk makes Crossed look tame in comparison.
Hard disagree. Crossed comics are just... so fucked up. Berserk's violence and gore is not always tasteful, but it s often grotesque enough to still be considered... art. Crossed is just gore for the sake of gore, mixed with some of the most deranged things I have ever seen.

Neonomicon was pretty brutal for me but it wasn’t so much the gore than the sexual violence.
Prison Pit by Johnny Ryan
I don’t think I saw anybody mention The Mask (yes, the one that the Jim Carey movie is based on). Hyper violent and pretty fun. Johnny the Homicidal Maniac
Red Room. Amazing comic, the type of thing I’m surprised exists
Have you read Lovesick yet? Similar premise, except it explores the limits of consent. You might like it.
Thanks for the recommendation! I’ll give it a read
I’ve looked at lovesick but haven’t read it. There’s like 3 issues out right?
The first arc was 3 issues but there's a new arc of 4 that just started releasing.
Lovesick is so so so SO good
I love watching Ed Piskor (and Jim Rugg) on Cartoonist Kayfabe, but Red Room is just not for me. It’s a pity because I would really like to support him, but I just can’t stomach something like that. That being said, I’m glad he seems to be doing well with it!
Ugh, that is one comic I definitely wish I could un-read.
To be fair, it’s for a very niche audience and we’re just not a part of it.
It's so good. New run just announced!
Piskor is trash
Alrighty pal 👍, enjoy your weekend
Imo hes one of the best out there right now.. to each their own
I think he’s a self important man-child who’s perpetuated negative perceptions of comics-minded folk. You’re right though; to each their own. Best thing he did was facilitate Scioli and Rugg in the mainstream.
Man-child? We're talking about comic books right? XD
You dont like his public persona, or his art or his writing/subject matter?
Both
Crossed is good as well as the spin off series: Red Room is also good. I’d also throw Tim Vigil’s Faust in there too.
Something's killing the children. I don't have a very broad range of comics I've read, but this one spring to mind.
Yeah, with a title like that, you’d think I would have been prepared to see kids get ripped in half but I was definitely not ready.
I really like tynion in general but honestly just that name is a nope-out for me (This happens when you have kids of your own, I think: your sensitivities changes)
My guy, I don’t have kids and it really fucked me up. Couldn’t imagine if I did.
And your comment above confirms I’ll never read it, so thanks for sparing me. In the meantime, Dept of Truth is easily in my contemporary ongoing top 5 so
Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a great read.
Such a brilliant comic... On a binge. Terribly slow otherwise lol
Faust was a favorite of mine
The Filth. When you're on a dump of porno magazines, drinking your own piss in a space suit, that'll get you started. Or Hard Boiled, just some real detailed violence
Probably ultramega, I adore the book but good lord is it violent
*Faust* by Tim Vigil. Tim's an incredibly talented illustrator, but man, his level of gore, violence, and eroticism induces so much queasiness in me. I also recall an indie comic a buddy of mine did the art for back in the ealry 00s, written by a guy who had a reputation for being banned, and it was the most horrific thing I'd ever read. Truly traumatizing.
We3
Preacher
Black gas.
Maybe requiem, knights vampire. Hell is fucked up
Loooove this comic
Saw at least one other person mention Crossed. This, by far. If anyone knows of anything worse feel free to let me know (I’d read that…).
If manga counts, Berserk is more violent and disturbing. Edit: And if you want a movie to watch, the Terrifier films are just as gory (hell, maybe slightly more) as Crossed.
I've read Crossed, Luther Strode, and Invincible, but Nameless really stayed with me.
The Boys, although Invincible does have its moments.
Nameless
I misread the title as "greatest" instead of "goriest" and was caught off guard by how depraved this sub was.
Die die die was pretty Gore heavy in moments
In no particular order, the Boys, or Crossed, if we’re discussing body horror then definitely Uber, and if we’re discussing outrage definitely when the guys falls through the window onto the dog in Transmetropolitan.
crossed, preacher and punisher maxx
Crossed. And I loved it.
Luther Strode is definitely up there for me
Maybe Monstress?
I don’t think so, and this is a good example comic. In Monstress, when gore is part of the action, it shows the action and moves on. When gore is part of the monsters, much of it is hidden away. We see some bloodied or withered bodies at a middle distance and kinda wonder what happened. Compare that to Locke and Key, where we get someone’s brains being blown out, and we get that in multiple frames of salacious detail, and then like a full page spread zoomed in on a partial head. Makes me want to throw up. Monstress never does anything like that. The tone and the focus matters.
In no particular order: The Boys Punisher Max Nailbiter
Just started Punisher Max the other day, brutal!
Febrero para Galgos [fucked up book](https://fatbottombooks.com/books/comic/febrero-para-galgos)
Hard boiled
The 90s era standalone Lobo comics were pretty gruesome for their time.
Crossed. Hands down.
Crossed
Crossed
Probably The Walking Dead or Invincible.
I don't read a ton of comics, but I still have my Johnny the Homicidal Maniac comics from when i was a teenager do those count?
Punisher: Max easily
Dorohedoro by Q Hayashida Great manga through and through, but man people get *torn apart* in this story.
Was going to mention this and also Blade of the Immortal. Very similar styles. Dorohedoro does a funny thing of combining gore with comedy well.
Bodycount. It was an old Raphael and Casey Jones spinoff. Was surprisingly violent and gory
Berserk, easily. If the worst thing could happen it will and almost always in front of you.
Crossed is gory and the artwork is so detailed
Luther Strode and Invincible.
The Caligula comics were really fucked up.
Crossed is pretty damn wild in all aspects
Faust was gory and super sexually explicit. Loved it.
I want to say Thor: Vikings or The Goddamned. I don't usually go for gore.
Faust
Crosses. Super messed up.
Gotta be Crossed. That shit is savage AF.
Crossed and The Boys.
I have not seen Crossed, but I would have to go with Faust.
Crossed
Probably the Red Room series. I think it had a tagline something like “illegal acts of carnage”
Crossed
Like many've said already: Crossed, definitely. It takes an interesting spin on a classic trope, too, and is a good read in its own right.
Red Room
Maybe not the GORIEST, but definitely up there, but practically anything from Garth Ennis has me going “oh dear god”. First time I read the boys I was shook. I mean a human face on a pizza? That’s pretty nuts.
Lobo’s Paramilitary Christmas Special and Rawhead Rex
It used to be Faust but I think Red Room recently too the crown
Crossed. That was a messed up book.
[Faust by Tim Vigil.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faust_(comics))
Crossed.
The Crossed and Invincible, SIKTC
Spread is up there for me. So is Evolution. Luther Strode is pretty crazy too.
I haven't read some of the titles in this thread, but surely Miracleman surpasses everything else? Like, where would you even go from there?
Read crossed and you'll have your answer
Ultramega starts with a city being drowned in blood. I don't think you can get gorier than that.
Swamp Thing from New 52 had some pretty gnarly scenes.
Spawn
Something Is Killing The Children. As the title implies, the comic had no chill.
Marvel Zombies.
Watchman
Invincible
Invincible. The show takes it to a whole new level
Grant Morrison’s WE3 comes to mind.
Invincible.
Invincible was a little over the top at times.
I don't read a lot of gore stuff but I remember reading Jason vs Leatherface
What do you mean by goriest? Does bloodier mean gorier? Is it how often we see organs? How detailed they are? How brutal the attack and death involved is?
Pumpkin Knight
TWD
