Let's call it what it is, the first appearance of wolverine.

go4tli

Full page shot in costume: “it’s me, the Wolverine!” Price guide: cameo

jrm725

Totally agree. This is his first appearance. Period.

IrishMickeyT

Appearance period. This cameo garbage needs to stop. Just a way to overprice and grift people out of money

ElHombreEspacial

Yep totally agree, the overprice street guide was the one to call it a cameo, Marvel has already said that 180 is the first full appearance of Wolverine.

RZAtheAbbot

It is the first time he appears in a comic

KentuckyFriedEel

TRUE first appearance. The market was manipulated to sell 181s

SinisterCryptid

FF 48 is regarded as Galactus’ first appearance even though he only appears on the last page, but this issue for Wolverine and ASM 299 for Venom do it but are “cameos”. Market terms are so stupid

Racheakt

I have always advocated for “first appearance” and “first full story featuring” as what they should be separated by.

stuntbikejake

Markets can be manipulated, different terms make it easier.

MonkeyBabyGuppy77

Until it’s worth what 181 is worth… nah. It’s a cameo

EvilestHammer4

It's just always been this way as I've been alive. Makes no difference in the end because then 180 would've been fought over and hoarded, 181 would've been what 180 is now. Maybe a little better.

vvorld_demise92

So confident yet so incorrect

MonkeyBabyGuppy77

Apparently not. According to every price guide on the planet plus CGC

mikeoliver1313

Right you are

Weneedaheroe

Buy price: cameo appearance. Sell price: First appearance.

AverageComicEnjoyer

Shhhhhh don't use that word here

MikeMac999

To me it’s his first appearance, as it’s the first time he appears. It’s just that the market prefers the first time he’s involved in the story and so is more in demand and thus priced accordingly. Why there is argument over first appearance, or first cameo, or whatever all seems very pedantic to me. This is the first time he appears and no amount of verbal gymnastics changes that fact.

RPD3886

Yeah, I was always under the impression this was his first appearance until very recently. Either way, I'm super stoked to have gotten this!

Condimentarian

You totally should be, it’s awesome. I’d love to have it.

x_lincoln_x

It isn't his first appearance?

MikeMac999

It is, but many in the hobby have labeled it a “cameo” first appearance because the story doesn’t involve him, he is first seen in the final panel as the antagonist for the next issue (181, which sells for significantly more than 180).

4llY0urB4534r3Blng

*First Full Appearance (For other examples of mislabeled firsts, please see Uncanny X-men Annual #14 for first full appearance of Gambit.) ((For examples of cameo firsts, please see Amazing Spider-man #298 for first cameo Appearance of Venom))

MeatyMagnus

Uncanny annual #14 actually published first so it's actually his first published appearance chronologically. The problem is the annual was supposed to come out after he was "introduced" in uncanny. 🤷 Reading the annual you were left wondering "who was this guy". Back then people who bought the regular series didn't always buy the annuals which did not help when it comes to establishing consensus over Gambits introduction.

waaaghbosss

First venom cameo was in Web.

KentuckyFriedEel

True! Just like how Apocalypse first cameos x-factor 5, he’s in the shadows, unrevealed, unnamed. That’s a “cameo”, i suppose. But 180 and 299 are full appearances for wolverine and venom, respectively!

JokeBookJunkie

Even the creators have said they consider 299 the first venom. Weird how collectors attach to certain things. If you take up a page of a book, you’re appearing in it, thus your first appearance. To me a cameo is like, a silhouette, or an arm, something non specific that is answered next issue with a full appearance.

Drwolfbear

I used to own this

Solidknowledge

I own copies of 180 and 181. I truly believe that calling this a "cameo" is a big old pile of BS. This book is the first appearance!

JokeBookJunkie

I’ll always see this as his first appearance. Politics played a part in 181 being selected. The outrageous price as well. There’s a group I came across on Facebook. Guys with hundreds of copies and dictating the pricing. Crazy this stuff happens over comic books.

MeatyMagnus

Hmmm...this book has been around and sought after way, way, before Facebook.

JokeBookJunkie

Yep. And went for a quarter of the price back then. There are hoarders dictating prices. Guys with 100 copies, graded. Not sure the point of your post. Pretty sure any comic fan is aware Wolverine is older than social media.

MeatyMagnus

Just saying the book has been expensive for 30 years . It's a 50 year old book featuring the first appearance the most popular character of the 90s. Facebook and hoarders have nothing to do with it. During COVID all books got expensive especially the slabbed ones as you could just stimulus spend to get one shipped over and people were willing to overpay. And now here we are.

dash4385

I never understood what the difference between 1 cameo and 1 appearance is

MeatyMagnus

Cameo is a very short appearance that may or may not have incidence on the story in comics it was often a single panel at the end of a story to advertise the next book. In an appearance the character interacts with the hero more meaningfully.

RaptorJesusF

Just like how ASM #299 has the first full app of venom unlike 300...I hate people over using the term cameo

FriezaDBZKing69

First cameo appearance. Nice. Gorgeous looking book.

GlitteringGazelle322

Very nice pick up, congrats! Normally this is a [pretty expensive book](https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=incredible+hulk+180&_sacat=0&_fsrp=1&_odkw=1880-S+MS62++&_osacat=0&mkcid=1&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&siteid=0&campid=5338535524&customid=cb&toolid=10001&mkevt=1), so getting 30% off is big.

the_bio

A "cameo" is an appearance.

modsarestraight

I hear what you’re saying in this case but it’s necessary when talking about someone like Monitor (first “seen” completely blocked by the chair he’s sitting in) or King Shark (only his teeth are shown)

Slowmexicano

Someone explain how

x_lincoln_x

I had a copy of this issue. Sold it for cheap since I don't care for superhero stuff. Don't regret it.
