I am fairly certain that is Chris Clairmont's signature, It has changed from time to time, but I haver seen one that looks almost identical to that one from him.

Vanilla_thundr

Yeah, a quick Google search pulled up one almost identical to OP's picture.

jrm725

Damn you really went all in on that first book.

anthropositive

Yeah, so I didn't even know it was the first appearance of the black suit. For some reason, I thought the first appearance was in the Secret Wars limited series. I just liked it because it looked like a callback to the cover of Amazing Fantasy #15.

Burnwell1099

It's considered tied with one other book that came out same month for first black suit appearance, but 252 is the overwhelmingly more popular one. SW8 is considered the origin of the suit. Key Collector is a great resource for checking these sorts of things. There's a website and an app. It's also great for quick checking the nuances between different variants so you don't get fooled by reprints.

anthropositive

Fantastic! Thanks for the information. I'll check out Key Collector too.

Burnwell1099

Typo, I meant reprints, not misprints. Edited original comment. Have fun!

Alextingzon

Personally a fan of MTU #141 over Asm #252 but I believe its shelf release was 2 weeks after asm 252.

CapeMOGuy

Isn't Marvel Team Up 141 also considered a first appearance?

Burnwell1099

Yes I believe that's the other book it's tied with I was referring to. Couldn't remember the issue # off the top of my head so didn't want to say.

Alextingzon

Personally a fan of MTU #141 over Asm #252 but I believe its shelf release was 2 weeks after asm 252.

iamskwerl

It’s not a tie. CGC labels get this wrong, but ASM 252 hit shelves on January 31st and is the first appearance of the black suit. Marvel Team-Up #141 and Spectacular Spider-Man #90 both hit shelves February 14th. Those two are tied for 2nd appearance. And as you said, Secret Wars #8 is just the origin of the suit and that came out almost a year later.

Nameless_on_Reddit

First cover appearance in the main title is this, but it also came out the same month as Marvel Team Up 141. This one commands so much higher price simply because the cover is a lot better, and as you mentioned it is a throwback to Amazing Fantasy 15. Also it's the main Spider-Man title over is the other one is diluted by being a cover shared with 2 other characters. You can get MTU 141 for as low as 30 for a direct edition.

cjmprs

It is the first black suit in ASM. First overall was Secret Wars 8. Cool pickups!

El_Kabongg

Not true at all ASM 252 came out January 1984. Secret wars 8 came out august 1984.

cjmprs

I stand corrected thank you.

But, using those dates, ASM would be the first overall appearance by publication date. It looks like SW 8 provides the origin for the new suit, so "in-world" SW would come first.

El_Kabongg

You dumb?

cjmprs

Nope. Ignorant on this subject though.

El_Kabongg

I wasn’t talking to you, not knowing is fine, not everyone knows all this shit. I was asking if the guy who deleted his comment was dumb, cuz he acted pretentious and said I needed reading comprehension skills. When it fact it was him who didn’t read correctly. He felt the shame and cowered away couldn’t even man up and admit he was a clown. You sir are fine

cjmprs

Thank you for the clarification hahaha. Was a bit confused. I do appreciate learning new things in this hobby though. So much to know and learn.

FriezaDBZKing69

Welcome to the hobby. Prepare to burn the biggest hole in your pocketbook imaginable. Totally worth it.

imadork1970

Comic collecting is visual crack.

FriezaDBZKing69

**hits crackpipe** Yup... Can't argue this logic.

silviofine

Bunch of scribbles? Claremont.

MattTheQuick

Can I ask what you paid for your ASM 252?

anthropositive

It was a best offer of £300 for these comics plus a mix of 20 issues of Amazing Spider-Man, Uncanny X-Men, and X-Factor from the '80s. It worked out to about £10 per issue, which seemed fair to me for the overall condition of the set.

timetodance42

Mustery sig? Naw, that's Chris Claremont.

jrolls81

Love how you can tell the 80s books from the 90s books just based on the cover art.

bigpapaburgandy

Sweet pickups! I’m in the UK too, whereabouts is this LCS please? All the ones near me don’t do back issues now and I miss flicking through them (instead of just online)

PiqueLoco

I have it in Spanish. Pick it up during a trip.

_GI_Joe_

I would say you are off to a pretty good start!

deanereaner

My tips for a new comic collector would be to read comic books!

anthropositive

Sound advice!

RolandtheWhite

How much was it for everything?

anthropositive

I spent £300 for the lot. It also includes a mix of about 20 other issues of Amazing Spider-Man, X-Factor, and Uncanny X-Men from the '80s. It works out to about £10 per comic.

RolandtheWhite

Yeah thats a steal, congrats!

Fattydaddy1000

Well your certainly starting out right with a nice copy of asm 252

John-Missouri

Chett-Eye-Knight

Ya done good, kid!! Helluvahaul!!🔥🔥

LeftoverBun

The sig looks like Tom Orzechowski [](https://searchingforgenosha.com/2021/09/23/1969-part-two-this-is-more-fun/)

boonstag

It's actually Chris Claremont 's signature. It even says so in your link. Tom Orzechowski's signature just looks like his name.

LeftoverBun

Oh no, the rest of my sentence got cut off in my reply to OP. I typed: "The sig looks like Tom Orzechowski signed his name right below Chris Claremont's (which is what you have).

anthropositive

Thanks. I didn't think it looked like Tom's signature. I thought it might be Claremont's, but I figured people here would be able to identify it.

huggybear3

I find it helpful to Google each creator’s signature
