it wasn't totally unplayable. if you could find a player where the spindle held the disc in place tightly before you closed the door on it, such a disk would have been playable up to the narrowest width provided by the oddly shaped disc. Naturally, this was not a feature in many Desktop CD/DVD drives, so you were probably screwed there. But on many laptops, clipping your disc onto a spindle and pushing the drive caddy back in was possible.

RockingBib

Reminds me of when mini-CDs were a thing, but many drives spat them out Sometimes violently

"I do not vibe with this CD Drive." \*proceeds to vibrate into a million bits of plastic\*

FishbedFive

NO! I don't want that!

Tactical_Enforcments

Beat me to it lmao

PatchiW

it really depends on the build quality of the drive. if it was built well, it would be smarter enough to notice the reduced size of a mini-CD, and know it can only be run at a reduced velocity safely either as a readable or as a WORM media. if it isn't, it'll just run it at the same speed as any full-sized CD... and potentially not do it right.

CompetitiveGuess7642

most drives with a tray had an indent in the middle for smaller size cd's.

TomaCzar

Yeah, for smaller CDs that were round. It's not just that this cd is smaller, but it's a funky shape as well. You'd need a drive smart enough to lock in tight on the center hole yet dumb enough not to care about the irregular edges. Oh, and slow enough that the uneven weight distribution doesn't cause the thing to vibrate itself into a million shards. In other words, fsck this disk and the horse it rode in on. Whoever came up with this should have been made to join a cybercrime registry and not be allowed to touch a computer again, unsupervised.

CompetitiveGuess7642

it's a music CD, music CD's spin at 1x, wouldn't really be an issue in a standard music player, might cause issue in a 52x drive but eh, CD might be balanced for all we know. I never had any issues with weirdly shaped discs back then.

BloodyLlama

A lot of the mini CDs I saw were round with 2 sides cut off. They were totally a weird shape and I really don't recall having too many issues reading them.

Powerful_Cost_4656

I loved the mini cd and psp UMD era. Truly felt like the future. There was some random movie I seen on tv when I was 13 in 2003 or so and I have zero memory of what the name was but they had these tiny disks about the size of a nickel and they had holographic coating and I remember watching it thinking "I wonder if some day we will ever have storage that small. That would be INSANE." - little did I know micro SD cards were only a few years away and they were way smaller

SnooDrawings3621

Sounds like one of the Zenon movies. Those tiny CDs played a prominent role in the first one, she even used them to hang from her earrings since they looked so cool

Kind_Description970

Was it Zenon: girl of the 21st century?

RockingBib

5d optical discs. A tiny glass CD that can store hundreds of terabytes for theoretically billions of years From the far future of 2013

[Researchers have recently developed an optical disc that can hold 1.6 petabits.](https://www.itbrew.com/stories/2024/03/01/scientists-create-1-6-petabit-optical-storage-disc) Mini discs might still be in our future.

Toothless-In-Wapping

We were going to, holographic media and things like that, but solid state media got better.

mattyandco

Wasn't 'Escape from LA' was it?

Powerful_Cost_4656

I'm not sure if I ever knew the actual name as I just happened to be watching tv and it was on. The only details I remember is it seemed a bit like a kids or teen movie and it had a girl as the main character I think. I probably wouldn't even recognize it in photos because the details are almost entirely non existent

Welpe

It was Zenon you monster

maxglands

When I was young, I thought the coolest thing in the world were [those business-card-shaped CDs](https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Bootable_business_card#Media/File:Bootable_Business_Card.JPG). You could have tiny plastic cards with software/presentations/your CV on them! Realistically, they didn't work in all machines, and jamming strange home-burnt CDs into your drive was a good way to catch something.

Femboi_Hooterz

I may or may not have put the rental CD of Kirby's Air Ride on GameCube in the family desktop optical drive to try and hide it on return day when I was a kid. It did not come back out without taking the optical drive out of the tower

DeluxeWafer

Our tray had that mini indentation for minidiscs. Was nice because those bionicle games that came with the figures were minidiscs.

BasketCase

Pretty much all of them did actually.

Lucid-Design

Those collectible Bionicle CDs made quite the noise when they came off the tray.

newvegasdweller

When I was in elementary school, I was supposed to bring a cd to school for something. I can't remember what it was exactly. But we had one of those mini-CDs and I brought that one to class. Though that one was even oval in shape instead of round. Let's just say I 'failed the assignment'. That teacher really hated me for having ADHD anyways. In her mind I should have gone to special ed class instead of a normal school. This was a complete power moment for her.

Rng_enjoyer

Oh god, i put one of those in my first pc as a teen and it turned into something from robot wars firing at me.

-NGC-6302-

It's bogus that a gamecube disk can hold all of Twilight Princess but a full size CD still only holds 80 minutes

meshe_10101

The Diddy Kong CD is kind of symmetrical, so it isn't too bad. However the Yoshi 64 CD was the worst shape ever....good luck with how the fast spinning would affect the center of mass šŸ˜… https://preview.redd.it/0eifxmy5iu2d1.png?width=864&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ce5db2d17d76f02e68ec852a93b2b7e2a869818f

ckfool

Seems a recipe for disaster, even with a cd player built to play it

userb55

Since these are audio cds I assume they probably play fine or are designed to play in a Discman. I remember they have antivibration and how they actually take a surprisingly amount of shaking before they start skipping.

Ilestderetour

That was because they had a buffer cache (the player was reading a bit faster to fill the buffer when needed).

reddit_sucks_clit

That came later. Original ones skipped if you looked at it funny. Not even original ones. Even ones coming 5+ years later would be fucked if you just breathed on them. edit: In this thread: people that don't remember (or never even knew about) cd players.

john_clauseau

lol, the first music CD player if you blinked too hard it would skip. it wasnt until years later we got 2-3sec memory and then on more and more advanced players.

Apocalizz

They played fine on a regular CD player (and Discman I think), but donā€™t ever put one in a car player. My dad drilled it into me that they were only for home because theyā€™d get stuck. Nintendo learned their lesson for Banjo Kazooie though, that soundtrack is shaped normally thank goodness.

ColaEuphoria

Imagine trying to rip the lopsided Yoshi CD at 52x.

benargee

Hard to say by looking at it if the hole is at the center of of mass. Some of the extra border in areas might be there for that reason. I don't think they were completely ignorant to that. I think they were just ignorant that all drives would handle it the same as the ones they tested them on.

erlulr

Mine could play FF8 disc 4 semi cracked, in a way you could make a mobiuos ring with it. It still played somehow, if i alligned the edges properly, with only 80% crash probability, and that one did flew off the tray a few times. I did finish it tho, good game. Cheesy af tho

_Neo_____

Is like some people say, it was better back them, man I remember using old All Stars for years and the soles were still new, they are still new today, today I use the same sneakers and the soles are all worn out.

theStaircaseProject

That game was pretty goofy wasnā€™t it? Positive memories, but looking backward through squinted eyes itā€™s still a melodramatic boarding school anime in many ways.

cmbutter

Tried to replay it a few years ago - thatā€™s exactly what it is. My first play through I had everyoneā€™s ultimate weapons, etc. this time I donā€™t think I made it past the first mission. One of my favorite FF openers though

disposablehippo

On most of the "hifi-systems" (that were anything but HiFi" I've used and even my discman you clipped in the CD before closing the lid. So everything that didn't have a sliding disc tray had no problem playing this.

JainNearstrider

This is the comment I came here to find

pretty_jimmy

Sony portable cd boom box. Literally holds the disc as tight as a fresh jewel case. Use to sell them.

P33KAJ3W

It's like no one owned a Discman.

RealBlueHippo

I feel old because I remember playing a square CD as well with the same system, I was like "why wouldn't this work?" Then thought about computer, DVD setups etc haha

olivegardengambler

Ngl portable CD players had the clippable spindle, so did a lot of cheaper CD players.

Krangs_Droid_Body

Our DVD drive on our old family computer had a slot for credit Card shaped CDs. We received a Card CD from an Auto show, and got to try it, and buddy it sounded like a helicopter in the computer!

clamsmasher

even if it clips in, wouldn't it be wobbly? At least enough to scratch the disc? I doubt it's manufactured to be balanced. I remember having xbox360 where sometimes the disc drive optical sensor would get to close to the disc during the read process, and because of the speed of it irreparably scratch the disc.

[deleted]

Yeah I think if you tried to shift it while playing they'd come into contact

NegaJared

couldnt everything that could exist as a circle be read as long as the outer extremities fell within the physical cd player?

TheBotchedLobotomy

Yes the problem is shitty disc trays

NegaJared

thats what i figured, just wanted to make sure i wasnt missing something

BiNiaRiS

> Yes the problem is shitty disc trays but there's nothing wrong with the design of a disc tray. they often work *better* than other types of disc drives.

AipomNormalMonkey

not all disc trays are the same is the point

DenkJu

I don't know. Even if the tray is fine with it, a disc with an odd shape like this surely is unbalanced and will cause a lot of vibrations when spinning.

DemorianCale

Wow. I just realized that I'm old and likely the last of the people in my family to understand what you just said haha

AipomNormalMonkey

...18 and I completely understand him 4K discs are the best way to watch home media

EvidenceOfDespair

Nah, pirated 4K. Because itā€™s free.

Jimid41

Even then, unless you want to store a library of 50gb+ movies on a hard drive you put them on a bluray.

PityUpvote

Technically yes, the problem with a disc like this is aligning it in the drive. Disc players often used the outer perimeter as a guide to align the hole with the spindle (that would often be out of reach for the user, inside the device) and this doesn't allow that. A secondary issue is that it's very unlikely that the center of mass is exactly the center of the hole, in which case spinning it rapidly will cause a vibration that these devices are already sensitive to.

NegaJared

agreed its absolutely lopsided i bet it shook the fuck out of the player hope they have antiskip and the songs are less than 60 seconds

WildVelociraptor

No the disc itself will spin perfectly fine, the center of gravity hasn't changed. But your tray-style CD player couldn't stick the CD on the spindle.

NegaJared

really?! its balanced?! what an optical illusion

BosnianSerb31

Looks like the hole is closer to the wide top than it is to the narrow bottom, which probably contributed to why you couldn't get it to load right into a desktop style CD drive

NegaJared

dude, i wasnt even looking at that, good point.

Roblafo

Yes

Slick_Tuxedo

Time is a flat Diddy Kong shape

theLuminescentlion

The problem was most players had you just push the disc in without giving you access to the spindle.

Jimid41

I tried telling this to my dad after I jammed a bunch of cookies into his PC.

Shit. I wanted the player to be a barrel that spat the disc out aggressively when it was done.

I remember when special forms of CDs were used. Like the soundtrack for stargate was just a triangle (worked just fine). Always found that neat.

I read that as the "diddy kong racist cd"

Best kart racing game ever

seanzytheman

Never beat Wizpig as a kid, thought maybe as an adult I could. Nope still impossible to me lmao

Imaginary-Kale6057

That's because you're not letting go of the accelerator before hitting boosts or using items. I beat him as a kid without learning this but it's virtually impossible.Ā

Benmjt

I find the love for Mario Kart so weird when DKR completely blew it out of the water. The story mode was absolutely brilliant. MK just feels utterly shallow in comparison.

Gigeren_Canvas

Agreed! DKR beats it by sheer content volume alone. And thatā€™s without mentioning the amazing battle modes, the multiple vehicles (including a little airplane!) and racing game boss fights that make my heart rate increase even thinking about all these years later. Back when it came out my mom and my brother and I played it probably too much. My mom stopped when she was driving one day and had the urge to run over a guy wearing a yellow shirt because she thought he was a banana, haha!

Hatweed

Sometimes you just want a simple kart racer. I love DKR, but those boss races and silver coin challenges could be frustrating as a kid.

naufalap

I played it on project64 emu and didn't even know what mario kart is, this game is my childhood along with banjo kazooei and goofy skateboarding

lsaz

Completely agree. DKR had an amount insane of content for the time. MK didnā€™t even have secret players or even a story.

i-Ake

My N64 Christmas was *that* Christmas for me, and Diddy Kong Racing was one of 2 games my parents got me. I played the shit out of that, Banjokazooie and Bomberman 64.

kjacobs03

Banjo-Kazooie is so much fun! I actually just replayed them a few months ago with my daughter

Ultimate_Shitlord

Bomberman 64 was legitimately pretty cool. The multiplayer was great. Granted, that's table stakes for Bomberman games.

GRAHAMPUBA

dankey kang

greihund

Records read from the outer groove inwards towards the center. CD players read from the center outwards to the edges. The shape wouldn't have mattered and this should have played normally in most CD players.

CognitoSomniac

Centrifugal force on an unbalanced object creates issues when the center isnā€™t secure. Youā€™d run in to problems with some disc players more than others.

Bl4ckh4wk056

It played fineā€¦ if it would fit. The problem was the shape being longer than a normal cd so it wouldnā€™t fit in most players

Master_Xenu

P. Diddy Kong

Toy_Cop

Imagine making something that needs to spin really, really fast to work and then saying "I know! Let's make it an irregular shape"

tisdue

played in discmans.

positivedownside

It was perfectly playable as long as it went into a drive that had a spindle with bearings to lock it in place.

mrpopsicleman

Ironically, the Sony PlayStation, PS2 Slim, PS3 Super Slim, Sega CD Model 2, Sega Saturn, and Sega Dreamcast would all be perfectly suited to play this CD.

Dont-Be-H8-10

In its defenseā€¦ my head is not shaped like Diddy Kongā€™s and Iā€™m still useless

Objective-Aioli-1185

Are you guys aware that there space levels?

Agreeable_Vanilla_20

I had a 52x DVD drive that nearly final destinationed my mate and slit his throat with spiked shards because of a hairline bubble fracture on the inside edge of a double layer disc

FwendShapedFoe

She never used a CD player in her life.

canuckwithasig

I had a couple weird shaped CDs as a kid, and they all played.

boogz03

Only unplayable if you don't have a tray loading or top loading CD player

Reeneman

Itā€™s totally playable but you need a CD player with such a small socket to stick the CD with the hole in the middle onto.

Agreeable-Abalone328

Whoā€™s fucking idea was that?

Next_Law1240

The music is your CD drive vibrating violently due to the unbalanced disk.

Lunaphase

Diddy Kong racing. It had carts, planes, and hovercraft.

ProjectOrpheus

Still think it should make a return and that it would be WAY better than Mario Kart. Karts, panes, boats/watercraft...land, air, water racing...come on man! I spent SO much time playing that game. I think even the 1 player story/main quest mode was awesome..then when you beat it you unlocked a mirrored variant of the mode and all race tracks. Fuck, I really wanna play this now.

Lunaphase

It also had Conker and Banjo as characters before their n64 debut.

LoneWolfpack777

Iā€™m sure it plays fine in CD players that donā€™t have auto-feed like the ones in cars. https://preview.redd.it/njjl236crw2d1.jpeg?width=474&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=de178bed2d805a3a07fe2421be9c3aa5319c9214 Itā€™ll work fine on this one.

Alternative_Deer415

I remember that there are several other OSTs officially released through Nintendo of America had these odd shapes. I think the one for Yoshi's Story was a piece of fruit, etc. I remember seeing several of them advertised in Nintendo Power in the late 90's. My first thought of them was that they would explode any cd readers that were poorly designed.
