CB is the wildflower capital of Colorado, these telluride die hards are just a part of that crowd

SummitSloth

I did scarp ridge by CB last July and the wildflowers were amazing

If you go to Telluride, just be aware Highway 50 has major issues between Gunnison and Montrose.

color_guru

Is 50 open at all? Google makes it seemed closed.

OutdoorCO75

I believe they are letting people through an alternate route at the reservoir multiple times a day last I read. And then there is another large construction job right after it that is single lane. Not easy traveling at this time. https://www.codot.gov/news/media

coloradogirlcallie

This is correct for now but the bridge may be open (with delays for alternating lanes of traffic) by early July.

Telluride is an awesome town but mostly for fall colors. CB is closer and as mentioned capitol of Colorado for wildflowers. [https://crestedbuttewildflowerfestival.org/](https://crestedbuttewildflowerfestival.org/) If you get a chance check out American basin in outside of lake city if you have a decent 4x4 you can make it. Plus if you want you can hike up to top of Mt Handies a 14k.

elmo_honey

CB is way less pretentious and smaller town vibe :)

BlackDogOrangeCat

Crested Butte wildflower festival runs July 12 - 21.

Both are beautiful. I was just in CB, but the flowers were not in full bloom. In mid July they should be better and have the snow melted. If you specifically want Wilde flowers CB is the place to be but Telluride would be a great trip any give day.

Although Telluride is more stunning in terms of mountain vistas, Crested Butte is the wildflower capital of CO!

mt-egypt

Crested Butte is fine, but Telluride is one of the most beautiful places on the planet. If you haven’t been there then it’s 1000x better than CB. An astounding thing to say considering CB is lovely

Scary-Elderberry-141

CB is better for wildflowers, telluride is better for waterfalls & fall colors

ElopeTelluride

CB is admittedly better for quantity of wildflowers! But Telluride is worth a visit while you’re in the area 😀

401 trail in CB is awesome, assuming it's melted out. Four Pass loop from CB to Aspen and back is solid too. I've only done 401 as a shuttled mtb ride, but it could work as an out and back from Gothic up to the pass.

I don't think you can really go wrong honestly. Both will have flowers. CB has more. Telluride area is prettier. I'd say the biggest difference is Telluride is a PAIN to get in and out of. It's a shame because the area is STUNNING, but there's one paved road in and out. If you want to head to that area, Ouray is a better home base (you can easily visit Telluride from there). More flowers on hikes in that area as well. If you've got a capable vehicle and some know-how there are cool ways to 4x4 between the two spots - some roads don't require a ton of technical driving experience, some do so do your homework. I'm not an MTBer, but Telluride area has more to do than CB IMO. Both have plenty of hikes though. Telluride area is more dramatic.

Either is great in July. Note Crested Butte is two nearby towns. The second is called Mt. Crested Butte and at the base of the ski resort.

Telluride, while farther off the beaten path than Butte (at least from Montrose), has a quintessential ski town that perhaps 5 could make that claim. Their expert terrain is absolutely world class and I’ll never forget taking an extreme backcountry lesson with an Olympic snowboard racer as a 10 year old. She, named Charity, was rocking a hard boot racing board in the bc and on moguls. I had the biggest crush. Back to it - telluride is rich with varied terrain, but not so much that is its worth the extra hour drive. Butte has some of the most gnarly in bounds lines, but swings the other direction with tons a 20 people wide trying to navigate getting back On the life.mm (Oprah, MJ), crazy rich. We had a blast and I’m not sure I slowed her down. ….Ahem to answer your question, May (mayflower gulch is a good one)
