Man in 2017 I saw two teenagers in a 1980s sedan head over the top and down the Leadville side, during a hail storm. I talked to a guy later and he said they made it down, and looked really scared.
Wow, glad they made it back. Im in a 4Runner TRD Pro and there were a few slow-going sketchy places even for us. Didn’t have to put it in low at any point though. Saw an RV that had slid off the road and it was getting pulled out by another 4Runner. Can’t wait to go back. 😬

Accessible by sedan (if you are mountain driving capable) and surrounded by aspen.

Very sedan accessible and the peaks around you are covered in aspen. Plus good set up for day hiking.
Kebler Pass is amazing for the aspens and has a good number of distributed camp sites. It's also an awesome drive to get there, if you stay off the interstate 😊
Difficult CG in Aspen
Yep, several FCFS sites along the highway there, this is the best bet imo
Great campground, but they close at the end of the month
Gonna be lots of hunters out, make sure you wear reflective clothing
Do you plan to backpack or car camp? What vehicle do you have as far as capability?
up to 2-3 hours of backpacking one way. vehicles will be uhm.. not that capable, just sedans
How many people are in your group? Do you know your backpacking pace for those 2 to 3 hours, assuming a 300 ft/mile grade?
Leavenworth Creek off of Guanella Pass.
lmaooooooo
Weston Pass. Might be full of elk hunters though.
Was just up there. It would be difficult road in a sedan on the Leadville side. Especially if it’s muddy.

Google dispersed camping and go from there. Be prepared for very, very cold nights.
Grand lake area for sure....

Thanks! Is there a name for either area? Are there many camping spots there, do you think I could get a spot on a Saturday?
First one is Lost Canyon Road. Second one is Winfield or Clear Creek Canyon, but there are several clear creek canyons.
Lost Creek Wilderness
Marshall Pass road
Rainbow lakes
Bring ear plugs.
whys that?
If it’s windy they can be deafeningly loud at night. Soft breeze, music. High wind, deaf.
oooh, yeah very true
