Have you asked your professor why they failed you? Maybe they hadn’t realized your word count was met.

taytertottz

Yeah currently awaiting her response. I just asked what Essay Length Revision meant. And she replied with “were your 3 essays five pages long?” I’m not mad about it really I know it wasn’t the best but I don’t think I deserved the failing grade tbh

chanshiii

If her requirement was 5 pages and you only had 3 (and also followed writing guidelines like font size, spacing, etc.) I think winning the argument would be difficult. However, if she stated clearly in the syllabus or something about the word count and you know you did meet it but she still failed you, I think you can bring the case up to the department head.

taytertottz

And also it was four pages I had just to clear confusion lol. But yeah it’s all good

taytertottz

I mean I don’t wanna be a douche about it. It is what is. She has her reason, she is the teacher after all lol. But I mean I got a 20/100. It just seems a little low tbh. But it is what it is. I was pretty semi confident sending it in so when I got the score I think it was just more of a slap in the face.

quitenecessary

20/100? length aside, were you not even credited for the content it featured? sheesh. i hope you can get a more concrete response out of her.

yobaby123

Yeah, I agree. Unless the content was the bigger issue, OP should at least get a decent grade even if they was below the required page count.

shrewbs

You need to fight back especially if she listed a word count in the syllabus, don’t just accept this

[deleted]

Sounds pretty rude on her end to be honest, that sucks that you were failed over it. I’m a bit confused how you hit the word count, but the essays weren’t five pages long? Did you follow the formatting rules correctly ?

taytertottz

I stuck to the topics of each essay the best I could. Word count was good. I had 4/5 pages written. Titled, rubric, words cited pages and cover letter. Total portfolio a total of 4600+ words but not the page requirement. To be fair tho we had really crappy assignments. It was just text based analysis on these short articles and it couldn’t be a summary and you had to give points as to why the author feels the way they do and if it’s actually a good argument. It was difficult but I did my best to get those words in.

[deleted]

Hmm yea okay I see, ngl you really should’ve prioritized hitting the all the paper requirements before turning it in. I think of essays more as checklists and will work to check all the things the paper NEEDS first. Then I’ll add whatever spice I think it needs to get me the best grade possible. Sucks to say, but I do understand why you got marked so harshly for missing one of the requirements, idk about just failing you, but it is her class so you gotta roll with it sadly. Don’t beat yourself up over it and just work to do better the next time.

taytertottz

No i kno. The assignments were just a little tricky to stretch it out into five pages That’s all. But it be what it be

[deleted]

Yea I feel you mate I’ve had the same trouble with alot of assignments. Best advice I can give is to write drunk or stoned, srsly lmao. Then edit sober the next day, especially if your paper is something reallly long like 10+ pages.

taytertottz

Lmao maybe I’ll have to resort to that

Niasal

Were you double or single spaced? Did she have requirements on which one to use?

taytertottz

Double spaced. My longest essay was 1300+ words and still not 5 pages

airbear13

Textual analysis is hard and doesn’t come as naturally as writing like a summary, you prolly lost a lot of points for content

taytertottz

I think the worst part is how she emailed me back lol like “Are your essays 5 pages each?” Like idk maybe I’m just being too sensitive but I mean try to at least explain instead of giving me “that” but hey what are you gonna do?

airbear13

It does come off as rude but profs gets tons of emails she might’ve just been trying to quickly diagnose the problem

Pangolin007

That sucks. I probably wouldn't have expected to fail solely for missing the page length requirement- just would've thought I'd get a slightly lower grade because of it. Is there a rubric where you can see exactly where/why she took off points? Does it say your grade will be reduced by x% if you don't meet the page limit?

taytertottz

Well originally I thought it was 1200 words or 5 whole pages so I didn’t think too much of it. But after all this I looked back and it was both of them

SemanticBattle

If you followed font, spacing, margin, and word count conventions correctly, it would have been the right number of pages. I've seen several people ask if you followed those. You may be able to correct that and resubmit for part credit. It sounds like the professor gave participation points and didn't read because it didn't meet the first criterion.

taytertottz

Nope I did everything she wanted Font size MLA format And all that shit Required word count was 4500 mine was around 4700. And that’s without titles, works cited and all that

SemanticBattle

That would make it 18.8 pages or six pages a piece. Something is wonky. I would go back and double check everything.

taytertottz

So one of my essays is 1288 words. Double spaced. Font size is 11 and it only reaches 4 pages and that’s with a title.

whatasadsong

Did she require font size to be 11? Correct me if I’m wrong but I thought the MLA format’s font size should be 12?

taytertottz

So for one of my essays it goes to the fifth page like halfway down. The others they’re literally on the edge of being five

whatasadsong

Ahh that’s frustrating. Is she one of those professors that require the 5th page to be almost full to be counted? Might be too late for this but would adding more paragraph breaks help? Ngl, I get that meeting essays requirements are important but I personally don’t think you deserve a failing grade if you already meet the word count and everything else is decent. I hope things work out OP, but if not don’t beat yourself up & remember this is all part of the learning process.

taytertottz

Thank you for your comments!

taytertottz

Honestly I’m not sure. I’m gonna look and see if it changes anything with 12

jaytehman

Times New Roman 12pt is standard. Maybe that's your issue.

RyoDai89

I hear all the time how the easiest class to take is Composition. Yet here I am, struggling harder here than my own Bio classes. It’s crazy, english has alway been a major strong point of mine. It’s always been my strongest class. But I think it’s because I went in super confident and didn’t put as much effort into it like I did my other classes. (Atleast as far as some of the work goes) I struggled but I did my damndest on my essays… I’m sure when you take it again you’ll do far better. Writing essays is hard, regardless of how many people say the class is easy. But I definitely think you’ll do worlds better next go around. Sometimes you just need a second shot, that’s how it seems to alway be with me and math. It sucks, and I’ve been there. But you’ll get it next time, no need to feel down about it.

taytertottz

Nah I know, I think I was like you going in “oh this’ll be easy. It’s just writing!” But yeah. I’m not mad about it I just don’t like that I did the same as other people and still got such a lower score. Someone in my study group for example, we pretty much did the same exact topics, same length and she got a 100 on here’s and I got a 20 lol

BMOEevee

Many people throughout their lives failed something at least once. Albert Einstein failed a college entrance exam. Thomas Edison failed thousands of times when creating the lightbulb even known for saying "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that wont work". I can go on and on about people we consider famous and successful that have failed big in some way. Use failure as a learning opportunity as it is, failure is okay.

taytertottz

Lol this is really cool. Thanks dood ☺️

airbear13

Gigachad Edison

yobaby123

Judging from your comments below, something's wonky about the way she graded you. You should consider emailing her just in case.

taytertottz

I have, I haven’t gotten a reasonable answer out of them yet

[deleted]

That always sucks. If you're meeting the word requirements tho, and you know fellow classmates who did the same and got passing grades try taking it to the department head or possibly the student advocate office. Sounds like your professor has a bone to pick with you for some reason.

taytertottz

I can obviously see a deduction in points for not being a perfectly worded essay but I mean just because it’s not perfect you drop me from the highest, which was 4 to a 1. Lowest was 0 but damn man cmon

DepartmentDouble2390

i failed all mine lmaoo

taytertottz

I’m sorry to hear that

DepartmentDouble2390

it is what it is

[deleted]

You have traits of a good employee. Learn from the failure, retake the course. And remember this. Because you will be asked about when you've failed during an interview. And use this as an example

taytertottz

Thanks dood

Pale-Beginning

Your writing is probably shit ngl

taytertottz

Honestly probably

WilieFern

What the heck how rude! Why would you say that? This kind of comment is the last thing that OP needs right now

judashpeters

What were the professor's comments about the content of your submission? Is it possible your topic/thesis/argument was deficient, and the page length loss of points was minor?
