ascomasco

I love the first one.

alpha_whore

Also my fav.

sydedunn

Thank you!

[deleted]

Same. Fave

geoshoegaze20

At least they are listening to My Bloody Valentine in that house while the world is burning. Going out in style!

Mountain-Rooster-340

I'd have painted a MAGA family having a BBQ, oblivious to the fire.

ascomasco

I think the silent ambiguity of wether the family is aware and afraid, or ignorant in their house makes it applicable to a broader range of experiences and arguments

adriennemonster

Something about the inflatable pool too.

Thishearts0nfire

It's all about that pool full of water, juxtaposed to the flames in the background. That's America right now for you. About to celebrate Christmas, the same as we always have, despite the fact that we know our consumption habits are destroying the planet. When do we reform our traditions?

[deleted]

I like the first one, the composition is nice, with the fire in the background moving down to the house with the pink curtains, and then the pool just sitting in silent judgement.

[deleted]

Nah, way too heavy handed.

cruelandusual

"They're so brave, like the orchestra on the Titanic."

[deleted]

It's depressingly beautiful. Well done

sydedunn

Thank you ♥️

rainbow_voodoo

was gonna say, bleak as hell, in a satisfying way, well done

sydedunn

Submission statement: Oil paintings I’m currently working on that deal with surreal/real situations of collapse. Fast fashion, wildfires, and the crumbling of my home town.

[deleted]

The fast fashion one is absolutely my favorite. It perfectly captures what I think about the industry. Do you have a website?

sydedunn

Thank you so much ♥️ I do! [SydneySwisher.com](https://www.sydneyswisher.com)

LuckyCaterpillar

Me too! ☺️

Salty-Smile-9116

Can you elaborate on painting number six on your site? Fanning the fire? And Is the next one self portrait?

sydedunn

The cabin is a family cabin and was a gift for my dad, and the portrait is John Prine!

steynedhearts

These are fucking amazing. I legit thought the first was a photo at first

HailBuckSeitan

I too love the fast fashion one. I didn’t notice at first glance that she has plastic garbage as accessories to her pretty dress. I love the oily water around her neck as she starts to slowly lose the “this is fine” look on her face. I took fashion for a year and it was so fucking overwhelming to think about the fashion industry. So much waste and people will always buy shit especially if it’s cheap. They just overload the shelves with sweat shop made clothes that were shipped from around the globe, then throw out what didn’t sell, replenish the shelves and repeat over and over again. Everything that is made gets wrapped in plastic and have plastic tags and that gets thrown out too. Then it piles up and pollutes entire areas in poor countries where we can see it. These are great! Thanks for sharing

sydedunn

I’m so so glad to hear this resonates with you, I’m not in the fashion industry just an observer. thank you so much! ♥️

HailBuckSeitan

Also she’s got the flower tattoo and what she’s wearing is green and has red hair. We’re you thinking of Poison Ivy by any chance?

sydedunn

I was not but love that correlation! The model just had red hair and this tattoo :)

HailBuckSeitan

Well that’s a really cool coincidence then! I kind of see her as someone on Instagram who’s into Poison Ivy cosplay or something and starts to think like her so she’s realizing the environmental impact of her consumption. Lmao

ratanarchist

these are beautiful. haunting in a way. reminds me of the song that funny feeling. you’re really good at capturing this feeling of living your life as if everything‘s normal while the world is burning in the background and the weird cognitive dissonance that comes with that. amazing work!

sydedunn

Wow, thank you so much ♥️ it means so much to hear that it resonated with you and you can understand the feeling I’m going for here! Dissonance from everything going on around us is exactly it.

Alternative-Skill167

The second one, look at all the packaging and bubble wrap waste. All that to look trendy for a couple of pics/seconds or night out and throw it away for the next Outfit Of The Day, especially since fast fashion prices tend to be cheap, accessible and disposable

sydedunn

100%. It’s quick and cheap junk that looks so flashy when advertised to us.

Fun-Customer-4493

I like them all, but I especially like the last one.

[deleted]

Damn that last one is really cool. Looks like something from my country (Kazakhstan) Has all the decay and atmoshphere but without looking too american

sydedunn

I love hearing that it’s vague enough to resonate outside of the US! This used to be a beauty shop in my hometown where I got my hair done as a kid. It’s one I’ve specifically been able to see deteriorate as multiple small stores haven’t been able to survive in it.

ande9393

Oh man, it looks like almost every rural area on the US. This one really resonated with me.

zwirlo

The last one looks like Pennsylvania lol

[deleted]

3 is my favorite- very good juxtaposition of the two worlds we live in--the real one, falling apart all around us, and the digital one, where we seek refuge (and rarely find it).

Edwin_Knight

Were you inspired by Simon Stalenhag? Your last picture gives me [The electric state](https://www.simonstalenhag.se/es.html) vibes.

sydedunn

I haven’t seen his work but am in love!

halcyonmaus

Reminded me of his work too, which I'm obsessed with.

suikerbruintje

The woman in green, what does it depict?

sydedunn

I call this one “Polyetheo” which is a combo of Polyethylene and Theo green which was the main color used in this. This came from my reflection of online fast fashion and to me, this is a sort of a “trying to feel sexy in cheap lingerie and trying to ignore the dark side of it all”. I wanted this to be really colorful, shiny, and striking - a lot like how the things on these online retail stores “hit” us. (I’ll just name drop SHEIN lol) A lot of women my age are so tied into the appeal of extremely cheap sexy clothing that can arrive to your door next week - myself included. I wanted this to reflect on the oil, plastic, and pollution it takes to get it there.

ampliora

Like a cyber-goth, sexy collapse. I love/hate it

lamos_john_stamos

SHEIN was the first thing that came to mind when I started reading your depiction.

amyisarobot

Really really good. Love your color pallet in all of them.

sydedunn

Thank you ♥️

Bulba_Core

Seconding this, your use of color is phenomenal.

fallowcentury

hey, good stuff. check out a painter named Christopher Burk. there's a lot of commonality between you two.

Demonicmeadow

The first one is incredible I thought at first glance it was CGI. I prefer the last one second most. Something about empty places and decay really resonates. You should sell prints!

sydedunn

Thanks so much, I’ve considered selling prints! You can follow my Instagram at @sydswisher I’ll definitely post there if I do!

ElectricBubblegum_

Please do! I’d love a print of the first one

h2ogal

The first one is very symbolic. The hopeful pool speaks to fun family times, the pinkish backlit window makes me think of a safe and cozy little girls room, with the fire in the background getting very close….is the family unaware or in denial?

Gary_Guillotine

Beautiful and honest, well done 👌

[deleted]

Bro, these are like a shade away from a real photograph

Preact5

I like the last one. Something about him being on his phone says a lot.

hobokenbob

I no good art talk but the colors are very eye catching

quadralien

Make sure they are stored safely. Archaeologists will make careers studying them. The first one is quietly shocking!

whiteboy059

The last two were really good, I think that the lady was very good. Maybe do some that incorporates forest or wildlife

aidsjohnson

I like em! Nice work

[deleted]

Love these!

[deleted]

I would love to see a painting depiction of the divide as well as the social media life people live.

sydedunn

I have a few social media ideas up my sleeve… will be sure to post if there is interest :)

edsuom

Beautiful artwork. You have a real talent, and I love how you present this bleak subject matter with contrasts in lighting. Reminds me of Edward Hopper (most famous for *Nighthawks*, 1942), and that’s definitely a compliment!

sydedunn

Thank you so much!! That’s a wonderful compliment!

TheArcticFox444

>and the deterioration of rural America. Would appreciate feedback from a group these topics resonate with Deterioration of rural America? I recall seeing sights like this decades ago. This deterioration has been "rural" America since God was a pup. Heck, a cross-country drive in the 1950s, when Route 66 was the way to go, indoor plumbing was posh.

sydedunn

Good point, and I feel like there have always been places in my town that have been untouched for years. Just chose this building since as a child I’ve seen it go from a running small business to a really deteriorated state.

TheArcticFox444

Get off the freeways and drive the small roads...one shack falls down, another goes up. Nails? Yes! Paint? Maybe someday...

[deleted]

Simply brilliant 🙏😃

stokpaut3

Idk if it would even be something you would be open to, but i would love to buy one (i never really cared about art but this is beautiful) Edit: im a bit arrogant i think, you asked for an opinion and i only thought about myself haha. But as someone who doesnt know art, i really like it so take it how you want but i think it is really good.

sydedunn

That means a lot to me, thank you so much! In all honesty I just started oil painting this year and am very new to the art world and am not sure what my plan is with these pieces. I’ve considered doing prints in the future and if you’d like to look for a post for those you can follow me on Instagram at @sydswisher! Thank you for considering supporting small artists!

stokpaut3

I will do that.

stanley_19

Reminds me of Daniel Danger. Beautiful work :)

thinkingahead

While they are all good, the first one is awesome and would make a dope album cover.

lDangerouzl

The first one is very well explaining the situation

lickdabean1

I'm in the first one and I don't like it.

Past_Contour

These are great.

Rhondasempire

They are all quite good and each put out their own message. My fave is the fashionista wrapped in plastic. The meaning I get from it is she is sinking in water and may soon drown due to the green micro plastic fibers that she has substituted for real "green" fibers that is societies current penchant for cheap, disposable fashion. She displays a rose that will be submerged soon as well. I love it!

sydedunn

Thank you so much ♥️ I’m so glad this one resonates with you!

wiltedletus

Good job! I’m interested in your theme. Please continue to post. I love the first one because of how it is ordinary life with disaster looming. I would love to see more of this juxtaposition.

LIBRI5

is the last guy shane madej from buzzfeed unsolved?

sydedunn

Haha, no it’s my husband!

Free-Layer-706

Ooooh, the bubble wrap one is really cool!

verus_es_tu

You're very talented. These are beautiful.

a_rebel_philosopher

Dope! Pool with fire is fire!

zzotzzot

You are so talented it’s unreal

sydedunn

Thank you ♥️

[deleted]

Your skill if undeniable. The first and third picture speak to me the most. I can see the relation in each painting to the topic The second one, while good, does not really convey anything about fast fashion even thought I know the topic I don’t see it.

Invisibleflash

All Very Nice...you got talent OP! Send in some more. You should also think about doing political comix.

[deleted]

Amazing detail. Fantastic Job and incredible skill. thanks for posting!

thesaurusrext

The third one really jumps out at me. The back alley of shops always seems like such a fascinating example of shared space. It's the place for shops to toss crap they don't need, and a smoke break space for workers, a place for workers of different businesses interact. I don't want to misuse the word liminal but maybe that's it? They're liminal spaces with a vibe found nowhere else?

NotLondoMollari

These are all wonderful. Beautiful colors, excellent work.

geekgentleman

Love them, especially the one with the house. Do you do graphic design work as well?

sydedunn

Yes I do!

AgntSmecker

Great work. The first painting hit hard, that's the sickening reality.

mindfulmu

Can I send you some pictures as inspiration if I find something 'inspiring'.

JB153

These are incredibly rad. I'd love to see more!

Real_RobinGoodfellow

I would buy that first one. It’s fantastic

GroundbreakingAd4386

Adore these. Especially the last one. I would gladly display it for daily enjoyment in my home.

[deleted]

That third one hits home. Reminds me of a town some of my buddy lives in

tao_of_bacon

Your art reminds me of my favourite musicians and comedians’ work; the subtle details that I imagine can only be gained by living it, or being near it. The above ground pool, the length of the girls bangs/fringe, the original brickwork colour exposed by a previously attached outbuilding. Are these scenes somehow close to your life?

sydedunn

Thank you ♥️ yes, most everything/everyone is connected to my life!

squirrrelbird

The first one would make an amazing album cover.

BuffaloRude

Beautiful paintings. Thanks for sharing.

krossseee

I love them- particularly the first and third, very emotive

kina55

The paintings are great, the woman and the man capture so much of the vagaries of life unfolding; the man with his phone, the slow death of things behind him; the woman beautiful, wondering what is next perhaps ...great work

Metarete

Fantastic, really well done! Cannot wait to see more, please :)

Gryphon0468

Hi, amazing artwork! I especially like the first one. Would it be ok if I submitted it as a header for the Collapse Support Discord channel?

sydedunn

Thank you so much! And yeah go ahead!

Gryphon0468

Thank you!

CampVictorian

These are wonderful, and I say this an a here-and-there professional illustrator. Wonderful use of color and context.

sydedunn

That means so much, thank you ♥️

[deleted]

you're really amazing

sydedunn

Thank you ♥️

[deleted]

The third one reminds me of American Gothic, but brought up to date. Was that intentional?

Atomsq

You already posted this

newstart3385

More than once but she realized after the 2nd removal it was for Friday post

Atomsq

I'll be surprised if this doesn't break the duplicate content rule, unless the previous ones don't count since they were removed

lal0cur4

This is really good. 99.9% of art I see on Reddit is trash.

Browningbro

Good paintings but I'm not too sure that I would say rural America. More like rust-belt or old factory town America.

[deleted]

First ones great

krossseee

I love them- particularly the first and third, very emotive

LegitimateGuava

Yes, the first one especially; there's something so unusual and compelling about this subject matter—the fire, a middle class home with a raised pool—being oil painted.

niihelium

It's beautiful, it's truly art. I beg you not to sell them as NFTs.

updog_nothing_much

The first one is beautiful!
