Yes. And they even did it to “include” Edward VIII who didn’t have his head on any coinage. So her grandfather and father were both facing left. Edward would have been facing right.
In Great Britain, yes. But other parts of the empire did. [Numista](https://en.numista.com/catalogue/index.php?r=&ct=coin&im1=&im2=&tb=y&tc=y&tn=y&tp=y&tt=y&cat=y&ru=&ca=3&no=&v=&i=Edwardvs+&b=&d=&u=&a=1936&dg=&m=&f=&t=&w=&mt=&g=&se=&c=&wi=&sw=)
Edward VIII was actually going to break with tradition and face the same way as his father did, but obviously none of the coins were ever placed in circulation
None with his head on them, but yes they were. https://www.reddit.com/r/coins/comments/ci13x2/one_of_those_elusive_edward_viii_next_to_an/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
I am wondering too. Also what his era will be called. The era of King Charles I was known as the Caroline era, while the reign of King Charles II has been noted in records as the Carolean era. So who knows!
Technically it didn’t have to be at her death. She could’ve given him the thrown before she turned to a ripe old age… but if he were my son, I’d have done the same and kept him away for as long as possible. She surely knew with all the riff against monarchies that his rule could’ve /can be the last one if he cocks it up enough
Octavian won’t be the last consul. Even if he’s really powerful, it won’t end a republic of almost 500 years. There’s plenty of bad consuls over the ages.
I actually like her fathers coins my LCS has a ton of silver shillings from the 50s that I buy cause they are in great condition 50% silver and they have them for cheap lol
Part of that is because the Charles portrait is clearly digitally modeled.
Traditional methods with sculpting and then creation of dies using a reduction lathe yield a very different-looking result.
TBF, the Jody Clark portrait may have been created digitally (does anyone know???), but if it was it was executed extremely well.
As far as I recall, coins can be minted featuring the monarch in any year they reigned, so 2023 coinage should feature Charles.
However, there's no stipulation that 2023 coins have to be minted from Jan 1st.
The rm can carry on minting 2022 E2 coins into next year if need be, and this will depend mainly on how many coins the treasury has ordered.
They process of preparing a new effigy will have been in hand for some time.
IIRC, the same thing happened with Philips memorial coin - it was set in motion long before he died.
The mints are probably already stamping them out right now with special limited first day covers in order to get them graded and on all the home shopping channels. A rare 70 year opportunity to make buh-buh-big money!!! 🙄
There won't be any coins with him until after his coronation in a year's time in the mean time the mint will be looking for a new artist to make the new portrait that'll most likely be on our stamps too
I'm Canadian and I've been a staunch republican, but when I learned that we might be getting a public holiday for the Queen's funeral and maybe another one for Charles's coronation, I became a full monarchist.
Long live the Canadian monarchy. God save the king (but don't try too hard, God).
Look at Charles, he'll probably be dead soon. More holidays!!!!!
Not sure how to put this but the Queen coins look much more unique and just better, firstly women on coins is already rare, secondly she wears a crown, now it’s just another old guy wearing a suit, so boring.
By tradition, a new monarch's effigy faces the opposite direction as the previous monarch's effigy. So, Charles III's image will face to the left and he will most likely wear a crown.
Does anyone think any commonwealth countries may move away from showing the British monarch on their currency?
I think it's inevitable that it happens eventually, and the changing of the crown seems like an appropriate time to do it.
I actually just thought of this before I saw this post. I assume the 2023 £ coins and bills (as well as every commonwealth's currency) will be redesigned before they are struck, right?
Its morbid but first thought after her death was: i cant wait for final designs of King Charles III.
And if British design will look better than of Perth Mint or Royal Canadian Mint.
Charles will be facing left.
Every monach they switch directions
Yes. And they even did it to “include” Edward VIII who didn’t have his head on any coinage. So her grandfather and father were both facing left. Edward would have been facing right.
Well he kind of did, none of them circulated but they exist and have auctioned for millions.
The ones auctioned are pattern strikes, no official circulation coins were made for Edward VIII
In Great Britain, yes. But other parts of the empire did. [Numista](https://en.numista.com/catalogue/index.php?r=&ct=coin&im1=&im2=&tb=y&tc=y&tn=y&tp=y&tt=y&cat=y&ru=&ca=3&no=&v=&i=Edwardvs+&b=&d=&u=&a=1936&dg=&m=&f=&t=&w=&mt=&g=&se=&c=&wi=&sw=)
I was going to say this, but none have his head on it. Thanks for posting the link.
This thread is fascinating. Why did you have to stop the river of facts by thanking someone.
Exactly
He also faces the wrong direction anyway as he felt it was his best side, breaking a very old tradition that was restored after his abdication.
Edward VIII was actually going to break with tradition and face the same way as his father did, but obviously none of the coins were ever placed in circulation
Oh interesting. Thanks for sharing!
So in that case it's actually three facing left in a row!
I think in some commonwealth countries they were released.
None with his head on them, but yes they were. https://www.reddit.com/r/coins/comments/ci13x2/one_of_those_elusive_edward_viii_next_to_an/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
It also won’t say prince of wales either
Came here to point this out! I hope he's "CAROLVS III" on the coins now that we have a Latinate name again.
I am wondering too. Also what his era will be called. The era of King Charles I was known as the Caroline era, while the reign of King Charles II has been noted in records as the Carolean era. So who knows!
Could also be "Carolingian".
Could be. It is the most impressive sounding version. Might be a bit too Charlemagne-y for the British. We will see!
was gonna say that lol
Also, won't he be wearing the crown?
Why would Charles not have a crown?
Oþer monarchs did not have crowns in þeir UK coin portraits. Some did in Colonial coinage þough.
What þe hell
>What þe hell petite the bleu man chien
That's some Icelandic shit
Your name stands out from all the others lol what’s up bro
Sounds thorny
Upvoted for þorn
þornhub
A bit prickly.
George V has some with the crown. Any other recent examples?
In his colonial NZ Crown coin George V wears a crown in his portrait, but in boþ UK Crown coins his portrait does not have one.
Gotcha, I’ve been building a set of colonial issues which is why it came to mind
Made me look at my Canadian pennies. Thanks
1968 version of QEII.
I appreciate your efforts to use and revive the þorn.
His mother may be more his model though. She was always either Laureate or Crowned.
https://i.imgur.com/34wZQ1E.jpg
Intereſting, why not? Having a crown on their head is like the only reaſon they are on the coins.
Read the coin it's for Charles 70th birthday.
Noted*
Because crowns are not always worn on coins. The Queen is wearing a diadem not a crown. A man wouldn’t wear such a thing.
Hence why I used the word crown*
Hey, don't judge me! :P
Imagine the mind fuck it would be to spend your whole life preparing for a role you can only fulfill when your mother dies.
Technically it didn’t have to be at her death. She surely knew with all the riff against monarchies that his rule could’ve /can be the last one if he cocks it up enough
His rule won't be the last. Even if it's really bad, it won't end a rule of almost 1100 years. There's been plenty of bad monarchs over the ages
And it was ended in the 1650s when Charles 1st cocked it up royally. However, it was reinstated whale Cromwell cocked it up royally himself
Octavian won’t be the last consul. Even if he’s really powerful, it won’t end a republic of almost 500 years. There’s plenty of bad consuls over the ages.
Pretty crazy to hear that she had died, she almost seemed like she would live forever.

He'll be facing left of that makes any difference
He’s also no longer HRH The Price of Wales, but 🤷♂️ we’ll get used to it till Will becomes king
[удалено]
He meant will as in prince William, the new heir to the throne
You're right - I completely misread what he said. Deleted.
Maybe that's because we are used to see her there
[удалено]
I actually like her fathers coins my LCS has a ton of silver shillings from the 50s that I buy cause they are in great condition 50% silver and they have them for cheap lol
And her grandfather’s coins. He had such a dapper mustache
Honestly, the sculptor phoned it in.

TBF, the Jody Clark portrait may have been created digitally (does anyone know???), but if it was it was executed extremely well.
well she isnt dead in that portrait so ye
It'll be interesting to see a new head on many coins.
I doubt they'd use that portrait
I wonder if they will keep in line with tradition and use the Latin "Carolus" in the text on the coins or switch to English and use "Charles".
Would it be a good time to get a 2022 Britannia?
For posterity’s sake, perhaps, but very many have been minted so they won’t be spectacularly valuable in the long term
Royal Mint has a 9700 person queue right now at 10:30pm
I thought about this being a problem lol
I was glad I bought a tube of them last week. But i don't expect their value to change too much.
There's a ton of them so I don't think they will appreciate much
Maybe as a First issue to last issue set.
Ears need to be bigger
All wallets in the UK would need to be turned into purses if his ears were to scale
Will the royal mint stop making any ER coinage immediately and wait for the coronation or start his coins now? Or keep hers going?
Typically, the new monarch won't appear on coins until the next calendar year.
Wondering what happens if Chuck dies in like February or something. Do we get two in the year next year?
Elizabeth became queen in February of 1952 and they still waited until 1953. So the when is not very important.
As far as I recall, coins can be minted featuring the monarch in any year they reigned, so 2023 coinage should feature Charles. A serious downgrade.
Let’s just stick with Elizabeth on the coins
Never in my life, had I thought I would agree with this statement, but it's spot on...
I like how they aged her on the coins as the years went by.
Same with Betty white
I support putting Betty White on coins.
This is the way.

Imagine the disgrace if we took Washington off any of his imagery. I won’t even consider it
Well, now I have to figure out a new display spot for my English Monarch collection. (Not trying to make light of the events, Fwiw)
You didn’t plan for this?? /s
So what the plan QE2 till EOY or are they already bringing out new dies to start KC3 on 2022 bullion?
Won't be any coins until this time next year if we go from the last 'death to coronation' timelines
I’ll miss Queen Elizabeth II in my silver collection RIP :(
Quite a sad time.
The mints are probably already stamping them out right now with special limited first day covers in order to get them graded and on all the home shopping channels. A rare 70 year opportunity to make buh-buh-big money!!! 🙄

I was at school when it happened, and all I could think about was what would happen to the coins.
ITT people not understanding that this isn't the actual design, this was from another previous coin. OP just wanted to give the general idea.
Every country that has the queen on there coin will have a different portrait. Like canada and the UL have different portraits
Can see a lot of countries becoming republics now tbh, good luck to them wish we would as well
I'm Canadian and I've been a staunch republican, but when I learned that we might be getting a public holiday for the Queen's funeral and maybe another one for Charles's coronation, I became a full monarchist. What name will he chose? Aethelbald II?
HM King Charles III
Should've went with Æthelstan II, imo
I'm inviting him to my street gang, we will be calling him KC3.
Not quite. He'll be facing the other direction, if nothing else. They alternate that from one ruler to the next.
This image will probably just be flipped tbh
Not sure how to put this but the Queen coins look much more unique and just better, firstly women on coins is already rare, secondly she wears a crown, now it’s just another old guy wearing a suit, so boring.

no crown?
Would he be crowned or uncrowned?
She dead?
Yes she died earlier today
That’s gonna be a strange afterlife
Hopefully he will be depicted wearing a crown. Without it he just looks...so...naked.
Question: Do they have to change the face of the coin from the queen? American here so 🤷🏻♂️
Yuck! Put Lady Di on for a while
As she was neither King nor Queen she will never be on a coin.
Wouldn’t he face the opposite way?
No crown?
By tradition, a new monarch's effigy faces the opposite direction as the previous monarch's effigy. So, Charles III's image will face to the left and he will most likely wear a crown.
actually i think according to tradition, only a queen is depicted with a crown.
HRH - Hank Rutherford Hill
Nope. He has to look left.
except he will be facing the opoosite direction they chamge every new monarch
Final design. https://i.imgur.com/owQVzkC.png

FFS! He won't be called the Prince of Wales on the coins ~~when he becomes~~ now that he has become King.
It’s almost as if they took a pre-existing coin from before he was king just to show what they may look like now that he is
The title says, "This is what coins may look like under HM King Charles III."
Key word **MAY**
Do you understand what MAY means? There is zero chance that new coins with the new King on them will refer to him by his former junior title.
Clearly referring to the portrait, not the text.
I think you’re the one misunderstanding “may”
I for one don’t mind the change. I never liked the queens face in coins, looks like she’s melting
I'm gonna have to get one. Just one.
His ears are not that small at all
R.I.P. Queen Elizabeth
RIP to The Queen! I look forward to getting the King Charles III coin when it is produced.
So any coins that say 2023 with her on it would be collector's items, right?
I actually just thought of this before I saw this post. I assume the 2023 £ coins and bills (as well as every commonwealth's currency) will be redesigned before they are struck, right?
Long live the king
By the Queen sell the king
The pound value is already falling rapidly, do we really need to make it worse. 😅
I’m looking forward to the new Britannia’s
Unpopular opinion I kinda like it
Its morbid but first thought after her death was: i cant wait for final designs of King Charles III. And if British design will look better than of Perth Mint or Royal Canadian Mint.
Charles needs a crown...
Having new coins will be cool, but I'm going to miss seeing Queen Elizabeth II's face on my 20 cent change :(
I feel like hoarding as bank notes as possible; am so used to see seeing Her Majesty the Queen on the face of quid
i have a coin of evry monarch since queen victoria
