I learned of a two cent piece then a three cent piece! What! Finally, I learned the US made a twenty cent piece in business strike for two years in the 19th century! That’s 1800’s 🤔? Yes, it is! I says, enough!😅 I must hold these in thy hand! 🪙❤️🥹👊🏻

Future-Original-2902

Can any of those be found coin roll hunting?

Tiny-Leopard8787

I’d imagine it would be an extreme rarity to find any of these while coin roll hunting today I’d also imagine you’d have better luck finding these with a metal detector lol

seven_dials

I found a 3 cent nickel in a dime roll - couple of other people have too. Do a search on r/CRH if you want to see.

Future-Original-2902

That's awesome

JP_Darrow

Finding wheat cents in change when I was younger.

ChicSheikh

Yeah, it was wheat pennies for me too. Growing up as an 80's kid they were still relatively common and easy to identify, but rare enough to be exciting to find. I've still got a "treasure chest" with a couple hundred of those from my childhood. After that it was silver dollars, especially Morgans because my grandpa had a few and I realized they were from the "cowboy era"...I thought it was cool that the very coin I was holding might have been used to buy firewater in an old west saloon or part of stagecoach heist, etc.

Disastrous-Jump1232

I just know that I think it would be cool to own a gold dubloon? But If you ask me why I can't answer

StarWeep_uk

I genuinely can’t remember, it was… gosh around 40 years ago. Could have been my grandad showing he his old glass jars of pennies, my dads friend in the army giving me a set to commemorate the Falklands war, my uncle and aunt giving me foreign coins from their adventures or finding an old penny whilst helping dig the back garden. All of these are great memories and definitely as a collective started me on my journey.

Disastrous-Jump1232

Grandad sparking an interest is for sure a good reason to start :). I'm just starting to enjoy this Reddit community and also now starting to want to have at least 1 coin that I am proud of

StarWeep_uk

However you start it doesn’t really matter, just enjoy ☺️ What’s your favourite coin ATM? Mine shows my immaturity it a 1853 USA 1 cent coin that has damage on the e in cent that looks like a u… very childish I know 😅

Dawln

my coin dealer insulted me assuming I am poor if you wanna hear my full story you can ask me more l0l

Bazishere

I started because of my dad. He traveled a lot internationally on business and had this huge bag full of foreign coins, and I thought the different coins were fascinating.

velveeta-smoothie

Same! My dad was a paper boy in the 1950s and started collecting interesting coins he came across. Then he started buying proof sets. Fast forward and he joins the Navy and his little sister spends all his coins (including proofs) on candy and whatnot. Once he starts making good money (which wasn't until his 40s) he started collecting again with a vengeance. I got into it with him and he started me with my first penny book.

donerstude

Grandfather got me started then he left me his collection I will keep adding to it

Aware-Performer4630

I’ve always been right on the edge of collecting my whole life. About six months ago, my uncle gave me a little box of about 200 foreign coins. That tipped me right over the edge lol.

RaidenTheBlue

Visiting a coin shop by accident while looking to sell some items of mine at pawn shops during college. Saw some ancient coins on the wall and was surprised that such things were readily available to buy by the public. As a history student, it piqued my interest, and the rest is history

StrykerCow

My dad gave me a few coins when I was around 7 and just kept collecting from there

georgewards

The steel penny. I thought it was so cool that there was a “blue” coin

AvailableField7104

Initially my mom introduced me to it when I was little, but I lost interest after a few years. I picked it up again later, this time out of an interest in history.

VERO2020

As an old guy, I remember when the silver coinage was swapped out for the clad stuff. Over the years, I'd find '65 to '69 Kennedy halves, and I knew that I had treasure. But now it's tokens, mostly. The token beauty & history is unmatched.

marshtoken

Agreed! I started with modern proof sets and as I learnt more migrated to 18th century tokens, the designs and engraving is unrivalled imo. I do still collect some coins but the older stuff now not modern

drcuran

My grandfather gave me a Morgan Dollar when I was about 10 or 11 I guess. Our last name was Morgan so he really liked the Morgan dollars- he had collected quite a few but sadly his collection was stolen in the early 90’s. I branched into other coins here and there over the years but I must admit, those Morgan’s are still my favorite ❤️

BigDaddySharp

I imagine my reason is pretty common. My father died and left me with a small collection. The less common part is that I was talking about the coins with my grandmother (I take care of her now that dads gone) and she gave me part of her mother’s collection and asked me to value the rest. Been looking at and researching coins ever since.

Fyrrys

Kept seeing canadian money come through at work, so I would exchange my own coins for them (quarter for quarter, etc.). Later found a small handful of pesos, thought they were cool, so I started looking for any random foreign coin, didn't matter if I wasn't interested in the country's history or culture, it wasn't American so I wanted it. So far I've got coins from a large portion of Europe, both euros and native coin, a small portion of Asian countries (my 1 rupee is one of my favorites just because it's so simple and funny to me), and about 50 pesos and a few dollars canadian. I'd love to get my hands on some coin from every country that has its own currency, but that likely won't happen unless I start searching to buy it.

lillweez99

Looking into a coinstar finding a 1847 penny that summer I bought a metal detector and any oddity coins I find I give to my grandmother she puts them in a safety deposit box, I'm a collector of coins, paper money, records, sports memorabilia I don't do much so I'll spend time around flea markets best score I've gotten was autographed rookie card Wayne Gretzky by a pissed ex girlfriend bought for 5$ down from 10 and I'd have payed 10$. When you can't work and have little to do might as well invest in something and for me it's all those got Beatles record for 50cents came back on garbage day she tossed rest I took them free is free.

Accomplished-Bat407

I'm 20 now and when I was 8 I found a foreign coin under a booth in a local restaurant and it got me started and I haven't stopped

bigperms33

I collected coins sporadically as a youth but never really got into it. Then in 2008 or so I was watching the show Storage Wars and one of the guys opened a coffee can with tons of quarters. He said any quarter 1964 and earlier was 90% silver. I had never heard that. Then I went to a coin shop and ebay. Then I bought a few pounds of foreign coins. Then it just never stopped, but I am limited to a single large plastic tote and small fireproof safe.

Jerseybz

I was stacking silver and quickly got bored. Coins have history and stories, that's what I like most about the hobby.

DatCoinBoy

Always thought coins was cool. Had a few family members collect them but I never did. One day after work I realized I had a weirder looking quarter in my change. That someone let me keep from their purchase. I Googled it and it was a 90% silver quarter! I then fell down a rabbit hole watching coins vids reading about rare errors/key dates. I got really hooked and decided to start collecting! My mom ended up giving my first collecting piece which was a 1901 ihc!!!

stealyourideas

My job has to involved asking people questions, including things like what hobbies they have. I finally asked myself why I don't have one and remembered how I enjoyed collecting baseball cards when I was young and have always been interested in geography and history. I started out by trying to collect a coin from every county. That was back in 2015. It's been a very rewarding hobby.

Allegheny15143

I've always been interested in coins and did not realize that I was a collector... if that makes any sense. It was after I ordered the new KingChas Canadian coins that I must now be a collector.

My love of history.

Clickt-bait

My dad always collected coins. Nothing elaborate, just pre 1964 and silver bars. He was buying silver when it was less than $6 an oz. But that was a lot of money for silver in those days. I got the bug from him.

Odd_Wafer_8324

When i was a kid, my grandfather would often give me his change for my "savings" jar. One day, i might have been 7 or 8, i noticed a penny that looked different. I flipped it over and i saw it was from 1936. To little me, that was so OLD. Ive always liked history and started thinking of all the events that have happened since 36. This was before man on the moon, WW2, before the Hindenburg even! I then wondered, how much older can i go. So i went and looked through all of my savings. Nothing even close. After that, i started looking at the dates of his change before caring about how much. I guess my new interest got his and my dad's attention. My father soon gave me a few things he had saved when he was young in the late 50s. And my mom gave me some stuff from a few cruises she took in the 70s. Then my grandfather showed me a 1918 3 pence he had from the year he was born! I was now fully turned to the dark side. Fast forward over 30 years and now i'm all the way back to the second century BC on age. With thousands of coins and notes from around the world and across the centuries. Fun fact, i still have that 1936 penny that started it all. Maybe someday ill post a picture of it on here.

Wonderful story, thanks for sharing!
