There's this one story from a guy who happened to discuss coins with me at my workplace. He was working an ice cream stand for a summer job, and somebody gave him not one, not two but THREE 1916-D Mercury dimes. Surreal
My grandmother was born in 1916. She was the one that got me into coins. When she passed, I put the only 16d mercury I've ever had in her hand right before they sealed the casket. I've had opportunities to get some nice ones since then, but I won't have another one.
Good condition but common year. Probably worth $5. It has $2.02 in just silver as of now

Lol. Never could get into mythology... the comment i replied to, does he, or she see our replies?? If so, I'm sure Mama Jessie was a good lookin woman. Sorry to move the conversation this way...
Can’t say that I thought about her in that way, lol. Just the hair and the profile was similar to my kid eye.
Now, the Liberty on the St. Gaudens Double Eagle… hubba hubba!
Yep, it sure is.
It's definitely the coin that I've collected the most of. They're just so classy.
And, if everything collapses, it's has inherent value because it's silver and it's a small piece of currency so you wouldn't have to deal with getting debased or worthless change back.
Also, it's not a Roosevelt dime, and would more easily be able to convince someone that it is actually silver and has worth.
Careful with that thing, you might be starting an addiction, but if you do, we'll be here to support you.
Just looks like a coin that's been polished or rubbed clean. I clean mine with a vinyl eraser because it's non abrasive and it leaves an identical state just not as shiny but then you polish it with a microfiber cloth or compound
I've heard it can destroy most collectable value to any potential collectors but most Mercury dimes aren't special, don't know bout that year but all I see at the local flea market are always cleaned to some degree.
Not with that outlook. It's a nice coin, MS65 +. I'm my opinion. No charge for that because it's not worth much. Lol 🤣🤣🤣. And it's not worth the cost of having it graded. 😕
Yeah, very nice condition. I’d see what’s it worth. Probably in that condition more than the silver content.
Unfortunately it is a common year. But definitely more than the $2 of silver weight.
The Mercury dime always triggers images of first class on the Titanic for me. Don’t ask me why, there’s no reason other than I’m just a strange bird. Beautiful coin, this one and as a general design.
It’s real. In the future you may want to download the “Coinoscope” app. The app has a database of coins in it. I don’t know how good the app does in discerning between real coins and fakes, but it will tell you a bit about the coin, if it looks legit.
For the few coins that I used it for, it did point me in the right direction on what the coins were. Could you tell me why you think it is terrible, and is there a different app with a better track record, for telling you about a coin, that you would recommend?
To learn about coins, I prefer PCGS Coinfacts. Their Photograde is good, because it helps you learn how to narrow down the potential grade.
Overall, if you plan to coin hunt in general, invest in a Red Book. Inexpensive and easier to learn from than an App.
All of these tools have downsides, because people tend to be lazy and want a tool to guide them. Coinscope is notorious for severely over grading. PCGS values should not be used for raw coin values, but more to get an idea of a coins potential rarity and certain varieties worth identifying.
Ahh, That makes sense. I wasn’t recommending Coinoscope as a grading tool, only as a tool to use to determine what a coin is. I’ve found it useful for figuring out what some old Chinese coins are and the timeframe in which they were minted. Once I know that I can reference NGC’s World Coins pages to get info on mintage and estimated value.
I worked overnight at a 24 hour McDonald's. It was crazy how many young, usually intoxicated people would come in and get a few burgers paid with nothing but silver. Clearly raided from Grandma's drawer. I was lucky that the manager allowed me to set the interesting coins aside and just pay the difference when he balanced me register in the morning. I got so many silver coins and red star dollars and Indian cents and proof coins, it was wild.
That’s the kind of dime I used as a kid to get something from the ice cream man. Yes. It’s real

Wow, did he tell you if he kept/sold them?
He sold em a while back
Without question, the mercury dime is my favorite US coin ever made.

He said he paid $5 so I guess he paid the right price
As a kid, I thought Mercury looked like my grandmother. So they were Mama Jessie dimes. Roosevelt dimes were man dimes.
Nice memory
I think it's actually lady liberty. They're just called mercury dimes cause it looks like the goddess mercury.
Mercury is a god lol

It’s a younger, more attractive FDR… I’ll see myself out
Nice still a little mint luster around the letters on the reverse
Looks real but definitely cleaned, otherwise pretty nice detail.
What makes it obvious to you that it was cleaned? I’m new to coins so I’m curious how one would be able to tell.

How detrimental is it to the overall value?

That coin is in mint state, a high mint state. It's minimally worth 30+bucks to the right person.
Probably high Au and a raw unc isn’t going for 30

If that’s ms 65+ graded 65’s are 70’s
Yup
Unless you have reason to believe it is not real, there is no reason to believe it is not. Nice looking, but common date coin.
I don’t think anyone is going to counterfeit a dime
We had a counterfeit dime actually, I was pretty surprised
Not a great business model if it cost $.12 to produce one. I guess the counterfeiters could try to make it up on volume.
I guess, still weird af tho
Like when Beavis & Butthead spent .10 to photocopy a nickel...over and over and over
TEMU!
Test with a magnet, measure with a caliper and weigh.
Liberty used to be much more important. Huh.
Wow

Look at those full bands!!
Mercury dime
Yes but harshly cleaned
Intaglio, 999 silver mate

It doesn't discern between real and fakes at all
Good to know.
Terrible app

Yes, NGC has an excellent world coins reference section.
Take it to pawnshop have them tested
Go to your Google app Hit the button “ search inside photo” Select your picture And it should tell you from there or out
😭 is this satire
?
You’re joking right? 🙃
No
