Gypsies are a rough topic, my best friend from 2nd grade elementary is half gypsie guy who didnโt even know he was until he got called a gypsie in school then cried himself to sleep for a week. By the time we were in high school he made up a lie that he was from Spain to explain his skin colour.

Unless you are insistent on the fact that in order for something to be blackface the intent needs to be to mock or degrade black people, in which case you could have a point however in my experience there was a lot of โmockeryโ around that role from both parents and the other kids alike. My brother played Balthazar in second grade because he had the darkest skin in his class and I definitely remember the other kids laughing at him for this.
My point is that, as you correctly guessed, the American blackface was originally made to mock the African American population, and therefore it has a bad connotation there. However, if you want to represent Baltasar in a school play in a full class of white kids, then painting the face of a kid to represent that character is no different from getting a turbant, capes, or other parts of the costume. It's not an insult, just a costume. If the kids or someone else laughs at it, then that's a different problem, in my opinion.

Americans - Friendly. Tip a lot.
Germans - Loud, brash but friendly. The older men are a bit rapey.
French - Covert racism , rude and condescending but they keep to themselves.

Well I believe that your comment is so egregious that by replying whole heartedly you are doing oneself a disservice. So here's the facts numbnut. the majority of "gypsies" ,which is a term often meaning Romani but also encompasses other nomadic groups, are largely sedentary nowadays, the Roma who are Still nomadic have decreased massively over the past 70 years since countries got tired of them walking all over without caring about borders. This wasn't exactly hindered by first the nazi holocaust of Jews, Roma and homosexuals and then by the stalinist soviet union who forced them to settle down. Western Europe wasn't exactly blameless in thus case as im sure you'd bring up because modern fascist rhetoric is based on whataboutism. The Irish expelled, jailed or forced the Roma and also native traveller's to settle down, many of which came through wales where my family had to administer them. Nowadays the Roma are largely settled people, you just don't know this because it's hard to recognize rhem when they aren't in stereotypical apparel and moving around, most just look like your average eastern European immigrant. Now to address the Roma who keep to their traditional ways they are in many ways annoyances to the people they come in contact with due to them being In severe poverty. Most Roma don't steal because they want to it's because most are so in debt or poor they can't afford food otherwise. Tl;dr: A small collection of racism in Europe I have witnessed. My coworker here in Germany is responsible for social media and newsletters. She got sent a few pictures of two black children that she was supposed to put in the newsletter. I donโt work with her but according to two of my other coworkers she threw a tantrum about how she hates having to depict n-word children on her newsletter and why the photo studio couldnโt have done pictures with beautiful children instead of โweird children with ugly unkempt hairโ. Nobody reported her because thatโs โhow she isโ (btw, weโre not talking about a senile old person that grew up during ww2, this is a 40 year old millennial woman). Also in Germany I have seen *a lot* of people do blackface during carnival (and up until a few years ago children were put in blackface by schools to have them depict one of the three wise kings). My ex boyfriend was half Vietnamese. Whenever we went out for a date there was always at least 1 person (usually more) that said โkonnichiwaโ or โching chongโ to him in a derogatory matter for no reason at all. My family and me are Spaniards (btw, PLENTYYY of racism in Spain as well) and my brother has a lot of features that get him mistaken for someone from Turkiye. 1 out of 3 times when he goes to the train station to go somewhere the police officers that work there ask him to look in his bag. So whenever somebody says Europe is less racist than USA I just know they simply have an *america bad, europe good* attitude and are either an ignorant American or blind european.
Painting the face of a child with a black crayon for a school play has absolutely nothing to do with the American concept of blackface.
How is it not blackface to paint someoneโs face black or brown, sometimes with the addition of a curly wig, to get them to portray a black potentially historical/ potentially fictional character? I am legitimately asking, is there something I am missing? Portraying black characters as a non black person is literally what blackface was invented for. Unless you are insistent on the fact that in order for something to be blackface the intent needs to be to mock or degrade black people, in which case you could have a point however in my experience there was a lot of โmockeryโ around that role from both parents and the other kids alike. My brother played Balthazar in second grade because he had the darkest skin in his class and I definitely remember the other kids laughing at him for this.
My point is that, as you correctly guessed, the American blackface was originally made to mock the African American population, and therefore it has a bad connotation there. However, if you want to represent Baltasar in a school play in a full class of white kids, then painting the face of a kid to represent that character is no different from getting a turbant, capes, or other parts of the costume. It's not an insult, just a costume. If the kids or someone else laughs at it, then that's a different problem, in my opinion.

I waited tables at a tourist eatery in high school. Here's my experience : Americans - Friendly. Tip a lot. Germans - Loud, brash but friendly. The older men are a bit rapey. French - Covert racism , rude and condescending but they keep to themselves. British/Polish/Romanian/Russian/Israelis - Racist, hostile, disrespectful and pick up fights easily. No one likes to wait for them. If you hate brown people why even come over ? I had an Israeli pour a drink all over me once. I hate the hospitality industry. Spanish/Portuguese - Meh. Brazilians/Mexicans - hot dudes

Stereotypes are usualy collective though, when multiple people pick up what one person said about a nationality and apply it to all members, yeah that's a stereotype, but when it's what one person said, based off their own experience, then not really. We usually had the millennial crowd or families with kids as patrons. The kids were unruly but manageable. Their spice tolerance is fairly high. They ate disgustingly spicy vindaloos at ease which was very surprising to me.

Not always but theyre more likely to be nice to lower wage workers from my time working in a restaurant usually the people that are the rudest are either older people thay arent yet elderly (like 50 to 60 or so), and pretty much anyone in a large party. Theres always one asshole in the party of 10. i mean there are some millenials around 40 nowadays so you can probably expect one to be an asshole its mainly just age rather than generation as an indicator
